This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games, including consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games. Retro gaming means platforms launched in 2001 and earlier, and official game titles for those platforms released no later than December 2007 (homebrew console games made after this date will be permitted). The Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and Sony PlayStation 2 will now be considered "retro". Helpful links: Game Tech Wiki Emulation General Wiki

I just bought this $70 8shitdo and in less than a year of very light usage it's already broken. I don't want to waste money on another 8shitdo, and everything else on Amazon is just Gamesaar and other no-name brands. What is actually trustworthy and worth the money? I would prefer wired over wireless, and a good dpad is a must for retro gaming. It's a shame that 8shitdo's build quality is garbage, because otherwise the controller felt great. Is the GuliKit Elves 2 controller any good?

Suddenly games are not for children anymore. Developers went from 6MB cartridges to 650MB CDs. Third-Party developers received friendlier and more accessible publishing arrangements, lowering the barrier to entry while maximizing profits. The PlayStation business model fundamentally changed the video game industry by shifting console gaming from a toy market into a multi-Billion-Dollar mainstream entertainment empire.

On one hand, a game that redefined RPGs, made you PLAY a false flashback and believe it, let its characters keep their own voices instead of turning them into the author's megaphone, ended without telling you whether humanity survived, and never needed pretentious quotes to give itself airs. On the other hand, there's Xenogears.

Not shitposting, just an idea I had: a thread for conceptual demakes. What would modern games look like if they had been made back in the day, on actual retro hardware? Post mockups, ideas, or examples, and talk about how the game might have played within the limitations of the system. With the tools we have now, making them a reality isn't just fantasy anymore, but becoming a legitimate possibility, and with homebrews, romhacks, and modern releases on retro hardware being allowed, I believe this should fit within the scope of /vr/. Image related; Ghost Recon Wildlands if it released on PC in 1998

Halo: Dreamcast Evolved running on real Dreamcast hardware >Here's what I'll say. These are Halo's real Xbox models, whole. >The Dreamcast has no vertex shader, so every single vertex goes through a CPU from 1998. The Xbox looks up a reflection mask per pixel on the visor. The PVR can't, it only takes a colour per vertex. So the visor is cut ahead of time into 4x and then 16x the triangles, and I refit the mask on every new vertex. That drops the error against the Xbox's per-pixel reflection to about a third. Smaller triangles, less lying. >Cortana's chest is two separate springs, one each side, three axes each, underdamped on purpose. Spin her on the D-Pad and let go and... well. That was purely for science. It costs about 150 floating point operations a frame and no video memory. I have a Beckhoff CX9020 Embedded PC/PLC unit (ARMv7-A/Cortex-A8), and while I'm going to be using it for actual automation projects, I wanted to see about doing some funny stuff with it. I looked online for an available port, but I can't find a ready-to-go one available for download anywhere, and porting software goes right over my head. Does anyone here happen to have something that would work?

I booted this up just to fuck about with it expecting to drop it in less than 20 minutes but I ended up playing for a while. It's not a concept that makes me jump out of my seat when I hear it but it is very relaxing and satisfying to play, at least so far. I hear the sequel is even better too. They've got the bird guys with the handbags on the doors, you know the ancient south american gods or whatever, civilisation bringers who rekindled the world after a calamity. That's neat and totally lost on kids.

Looking at this: https://dcemulation.org/1-newsdump/QRandom/DC%20stuff/info/150-000105-1e_SegaDreamcast_title.pdf The dreamcast cost at least $220 each in the year 2000. It was sold at a loss. So here's how Dreamcast hardware can possibly be sold at a profit, while being better equipped to stand alongside other Gen 6 consoles. >GPU Rendition Verite 2200 instead of PowerVR2. Since it was manufactured in 350nm node, it was cheaper than PowerVR2 (250nm node) and could be fabbed in the same plant that produced the SH4 CPU. But the biggest benefit is the programmable RISC core running the GPU. Verite was the first programmable GPU and games could partially or entirely offload geometry calculations from the CPU to the GPU. This would improve performance in games like GTA 3 and other PS2 generation games. The most fatal downside is the 66MHz clock speed. It was a relatively slow GPU, giving it only slightly better fillrate than the original 3dFx Voodoo. But it's still well above PS1, and nothing smaller textures, lower color depth, lower Z-buffer precision, and lower resolution couldn't fix. >memory By the end of 1998, 64Mbit RAM modules actually cost half of 16Mbit RAM (Source: https://phe.rockefeller.edu/LogletLab/DRAM/dram.htm). That means Sega wasted money giving the Dreamcast 8MB VRAM. Coupled with chip packaging costs, Dreamcast should've had 16MB VRAM with the same RAM modules as the CPU, giving it 32MB total. GPUs back then were only set up to use 2-bank SDRAMs, but V2200's specs were completed by early 1997, so they had plenty of time to modify the memory map.

Fucking hell is there anything more legendary than the early NES Era of the 80s? The hype was fucking real, masterpiece after masterpiece, Nintendo power with detailed guides and soulful illustrations and clay models for the games you were playing at the moment, lots of niche hidden gems to rent, awesome rad aesthetics, etc. Fucking sucks I was born 20 years later with a ps2 with retards that only played nigger shit like gta, nfs and sportslop. I was born in the wrong generation.

Literally impossible. What's up with this extra scenario? I've seen my fair share of absurd ultra bosses in RPGs, but this one just isn't beatable no matter how much you exploit the game. You'd need to actually use in-game cheats and replay the game with runestones to even stand a chance against those stats, but then it would feel pointless since if you're already using cheats anyway, you may as well use the cheat to take control of the enemy. I don't get what I'm supposed to do here.

it's the result of a veteran game developer raised in arcades having to make a AAA blockbuster game. the arcade-like sensibilities shine through in the rock solid gameplay and pacing you could put Leon in a blank box room with a handful of enemies and it'd be fun to play. it's similar to Doom in that way, in that the foundation is so strong that it can be endlessly fun by just rearranging elements like level and enemy placements
