This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games, including consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games. Retro gaming means platforms launched in 2001 and earlier, and official game titles for those platforms released no later than December 2007 (homebrew console games made after this date will be permitted). The Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and Sony PlayStation 2 will now be considered "retro".

I actually did gamble away all of CJ's money by Las Venturas, just to see how my experience plays out differently by having to earn money for safehouses.
The thing about GTA, to me in particular, is that it's kind of a roleplay game. Sure you can speedrun the missions, but I've already done that millions of times. Driving around is enough to tickle my fun when I've turned off the radar and blips.

and? imagine saying the side quests in an RPG are "useless for the story", or any non-meta car in a racing game is a waste of time to use. why are you only applying this standard to San Andreas?

Most unfun dogshit handling in any driving game. Thank God real cars handle nothing like IV's. They feel like boats more than cars.

The disc drive needed to be at least 8X to be acceptable to Nintendo but those drives cost too much at the time; It also needed to use SDRam (16MB of SDRam was the same cost as 4MB of RDRam), dedicated video ram (8MB) and a dedicated sound chip with it's own dedicated ram (4MB) as well.

And that ram (al 3 banks) being quad channel running at 150MHz (600MBs) as well.
    >>12904636
It had 4KB, it needed at least 64KB, but with 8MB of shared video ram that won't be a issue.
    >>12905824
They did care about the load times, otherwise they would've used a 2X CD drive like everyone else, but the games they were making needed a 8X drive and those were too expensive at the time.

If those 8X drives were cheaper the N64 would've ben a CD system like the PS1 and Saturn.
    >>

    >They did care about the load times
    Not at all.
    >>
    >>12906974
Yes they did, they wanted a 8X drive but those cost $200 per drive at the time, if they were $50 at max the N64 would've been a CD system... Using Panasonic developed CAV discs like the Game Cube, Wii and Wii U and wasn't able to play normal CDs like the Saturn and PS1.
    >>
    >>12906974
    >They didn't care about load times at all.
I don't know why you say that. They made sure load times were non-existent on their GC games despite using discs.

Halo: Dreamcast Evolved running on real Dreamcast hardware

    >Here's what I'll say. These are Halo's real Xbox models, whole.

    >The Dreamcast has no vertex shader, so every single vertex goes through a CPU from 1998. The Xbox looks up a reflection mask per pixel on the visor. The PVR can't, it only takes a colour per vertex. So the visor is cut ahead of time into 4x and then 16x the triangles, and I refit the mask on every new vertex. That drops the error against the Xbox's per-pixel reflection to about a third. Smaller triangles, less lying.

    >Cortana's chest is two separate springs, one each side, three axes each, underdamped on purpose. Spin her on the D-Pad and let go and... well. That was purely for science. It costs about 150 floating point operations a frame and no video memory. Blue Cortana is Best Cortana.

I had a dreamcast when it was new, and I had an xbox not long after it came out. This is a very interesting tech demonstration but you'd have to be crazy to say you'd prefer to run this game on a dreamcast with a single analogue stick controller, I even remember feeling like Unreal Tournament was a big let down when I got it on dreamcast due to the controller limitations despite not really being old enough to think ahead of time "how would this game actually play with 1 stick". I think the phenomenon with the dreamcast is that it clearly had a lot of juice to squeeze which would perhaps have made it more relevant than it was, but it had integral issues which were never surmounted which permanently lowers its ceiling for potential. The dreamcast was not an xbox and if it were it wouldn't be remembered as fondly; sometimes the story of "what if" is more compelling than another real event. Still, this was an interesting video, sort of reminds me of those shenmue clips running on the saturn.

Damn. Even SMT Nocturne or the DDS games that has no dungeon crawling at all? Those JAY ARR PEE GEES are designed to "appeal to a wide audience unfamiliar with the genre, and video games in general"????

    >he invented JRPGs.
Ah yes. The founder of a genre gets to decide the limits of what counts as both parts of that genre and what the genre is designed to provide. Genres never outgrow their creators. Nor is anyone working on those genres allowed to take them in different directions than what the founder intended, else it doesn't count as part of that genre. Just like how the (I can't even say these blasphemous words) J....R.....P.....Gs I listed that aren't designed to "appeal to a wide audience unfamiliar with the genre, and video games in general" AKSHUALLY aren't JRPGs!

Yeah, gotta second this. They're starting to realize there's demand for specific niche things and so they're capitalizing on it.
    >Anbernic is capitalizing on clone systems so people get the same form factor just with the ability to be arguably better than buying a modded OG system like with the RG SP and RG34XX. Even the RG DS Plus is now flourishing due to CFW.
    >Retroid is capitalizing on higher end devices that ignore people's want for a one-and-done machine but instead does stuff like the Nova explicitly for people who just want a 4:3 machine or doing experimental stuff like a high spec device like the Thor now that they've settled in on the Pockets essentially being strong Vitas.
    >TrimUI is capitalizing on a sort of low budget but good build quality market.
At least when I got into this a few years back everyone was just flinging a device out every few months just for the sake of it and we still had weird stuff like the Retroid Pocket Classic or the random stuff Anbernic was doing. Miyoo was also still alive as a brand instead of endlessly making worse SP clones than Anbernic. Now the worst things we tend to see are Anbernic being stupid with the RG Vita?

It's like everyone has to be more deliberate except for Anbernic who either goes full retard like with the RG Vita and RG DS or somehow lucks out into smash hits like the RG DS Plus, SP, and 34XX with the DDS potentially also being another hit for the market that just wants 3DS.
    >>
    >>12907064
The Nova is the perfect example of what these companies should be doing though. It is basically an ideal product. It captures an entire chunk of video game history (basically all pre HD games), and is designed to give the user a more or less optimal experience for playing them. I think it is a much better device than all of these halfassed products that get immediately invalidated, sometimes before they even come out. I don't even know how you could improve upon the Nova in ways that wouldn't just be almost pointless QOL features or sidegrades. If you want to play something from the NES era all the way through to a Xbox, there's nothing better.

    >>
    >>12907085
They said the Duo is going to get it too.

Was Rainbow Six the most unique FPS of the 90's?

It spawned a legion of imitators and games who took influence from it later, but it was never really surpassed in its depthful-simplicity. SWAT came close.

I'm trying to use this program to write to a physical FDS disk. I have a Super Mario Bros. 2 disk with nothing on Side B so I want to put All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. on it. The FDSKey part works, but whenever I reconnect the Expansion RAM to the FDS and insert a disk, it gives ERR:NO POWER. What does that mean? It has a completely useless ReadMe. Is it because I'm using batteries for my FDS? Or because my Famicom is USB-power modded?

The Famicom I bought works. Probably because it's a top loader. The front loading NES has a terrible mechanism. I won't recommend the Famicom for everyone, the controller cords are a real concern. But definitely consider the AV Famicom with a converter, or the top-loading NES. Also, clean your carts with isopropyl and a qtip, that removed most gray screens for me.
