This would have revolutionized the video game industry.
I shouldn't be entertaining a low effort slop thread like this, but Sony with the PS1 (and perhaps SEGA with the Saturn) brought that revolution to the industry. Earlier CD systems existed sure, but they were add-ons or alternatives to existing cartridge first systems not the primary media. It was Nintendo that stood their ground on cartridge media for faster read times after getting cold feet with failed optical ventures. Audiences were able to tolerate the longer loading times on PS1 because the games were a lot more affordable for being printed on cheaper discs, and were wowed by the CD quality audio and FMV sequences that were made possible.
>>12904339Still would have been gimped by the shit texture cache
>>12904339Yes, it would. But by being selfish, stubborn, arrogant, and greedy, like a spoiled child, Nintendo ruined everything. We can only thank Sony for saving the industry from a company like Nintendo.
>>12904401What are you blabbering about? The N64 doesn't even have a texture cache.
>>12904339Not really because piracy would have been rampant, causing the downfall of Nintendo.
>>12904339I'd still be waiting for Mario 64 levels to load to this day
>>12904369>t. never heard of 3DO
>>129056853DO was such a wasted opportunity. Hawkins was genuinely retarded by going with a reverse razor & blades idea.
>>12904339It did
>>12904369Nintendo didn't care about load times they were just bitter about their deal falling through with Sony and didn't want to pay them to use cd's. They also enjoyed raking in free profits off of devs with their cart manufacturing scam and wanted it to continue. They were also obsessed with piracy and had nightmares about third worlders burning cd's.Nintendo's greed made them lose 5th gen and it let a monster into the industry that ate their lunch.
>>12904339The nice thing about carts is it makes it harder for pirates to kill the console.
Beuond soulless
>>12905709It’s insane that Valve later tried the exact same thing with Steam Machines.
>>12905929Unlike Sega, Nintendo actually has competent engineers that would’ve figured out effective anti-piracy measures.
>>12904339>schizo doesn't know about the doctor v64man you're so stupid and cringe that it's unreal>>12905809chad post
>>12905938>Nintendo actually has competent engineers that would’ve figured out effective anti-piracy measures.at no stage in nintendo's history has anybody in that garbage corporation ever invented any security for their product that wasn't an embarrassing farce. every console and handheld up to last model switch have rampant piracy. what other make believe schizophrenic stories that never happened do you have for us? was miyamoto at your house because your dad works at nintendo?
>>12904636Stop being a faggot redditor. TMEM is essentially a texture cache, though the fact that it's only 4KB isn't the issue. The real problem is the N64's comically shitty and high-latency memory system that causes the GPU to stall.
>>12906023>comically shitty and high-latency memory system that causes the GPU to stallprogrammers found a way around some of that by manipulating the cache to get up to ~50% increase of transfer speed but nobody would have noticed that.
>>12906019nta, but I've been thinking about this recently. I remember how easy it was to get most ROMs up to N64. PS1/PS2/DC were all easy to get but it was pretty hard to find anything for Gamecube. There was a persistent myth that Nintendo made the disc drives spin and read the data backwards as an anti-piracy measure. It turned out not to be true but people repeated it well into the Wii era.
>>12906042>pretty hard to find anything for Gamecube.i found it easy, but unfortunately gamecube wasn't that popular compared to everything else at the time> There was a persistent mythprobably created by someone at nintendo. brb, using a paperclip to enter into engineering mode on my switch.
>>12906019Nah he's right. Getting this worked up over the truth that Nintendo had pretty effective anti-piracy measures must cripple your ego as a piratefag. Problem with pirating the N64 back in the 90's, you couldn't use a CD-R to play N64 games and you couldn't insert a micro-SD card onto a cartridge at the time. It was impossible to pirate games on the N64. The only thing pirates managed to do was extra the data and create an emulator on a PC. But it wouldn't stop people from buying and owning physical copies of N64 games and playing them on the N64 instead of a PC.
>>12906023And yet still, somehow, the N64's games don't look like they're collapsing in on themselves when you're playing them, unlike the PS1.
>>12906313I don't think most pirates gave a shit about wahooo games on 64 anyways
>>12905809grok is this real
>>12906320PS1 is technically more powerful than the N64 if you don't care about muh floating point muh zbuffer muhfugga
Final Fantasy VII could've worked on n64 if they added a VHS tape and video crossover. The game would automatically enable or disable showing vhs output and it prompts you to press stop or play on the VCR and time the sync on controller
Honestly the SNES or N64 should've been a VCR. A tape holds way more cutscenes than a CDROM. Nintendo could've fought back against FF7 with a 6 hour cutscene game. 2x cdrom can't catch up to VHS. Imagine OoT with cutscenes and no texture limit.
>>12906362What would any red blooded gamer not favor actual game logic over FMV quality?
>>12906440Wobble was a small price for ps1 to pay
>>12904339You have posted this for months, will you just please fucking die already?
>>12904339The disc drive needed to be at least 8X to be acceptable to Nintendo but those drives cost too much at the time; It also needed to use SDRam (16MB of SDRam was the same cost as 4MB of RDRam), dedicated video ram (8MB) and a dedicated sound chip with it's own dedicated ram (4MB) as well. And that ram (al 3 banks) being quad channel running at 150MHz (600MBs) as well.>>12904636It had 4KB, it needed at least 64KB, but with 8MB of shared video ram that won't be a issue.>>12905824They did care about the load times, otherwise they would've used a 2X CD drive like everyone else, but the games they were making needed a 8X drive and those were too expensive at the time.If those 8X drives were cheaper the N64 would've ben a CD system like the PS1 and Saturn.
>nintendo discy four
>>12906834>They did care about the load timesNot at all.
>>12906974Yes they did, they wanted a 8X drive but those cost $200 per drive at the time, if they were $50 at max the N64 would've been a CD system... Using Panasonic developed CAV discs like the Game Cube, Wii and Wii U and wasn't able to play normal CDs like the Saturn and PS1.
>>12906974>They didn't care about load times at all.I don't know why you say that. They made sure load times were non-existent on their GC games despite using discs.
