If you are on the left and are for less cars and more bike lanes and trains, you may want to reconsider your position on crime and homelessness. In recent years, democratic politicians have insisted that a more compassionate approach to homelessness and crime meant not enforcing laws. As a consequence, you have had a dramatic uptick in public nuisances, sex crimes, theft, and assault on public trains and buses. This is especially dire for the Democratic Party, since it affects its core constituent the most, women. It’s so bad, even women like Ana Kasparian, of the Young Turks, said she felt politically homeless after experiencing sexual assault by a homeless person. If Democrats cannot return to more sensible polices on crime and homelessness, people with begin to reject the idea of mass transit and walkable cities more and more.

HSR works or not mostly due to geography and where cities are located

and where cities are located, at least outside the US, is also usually a function of geography that would tend to help out HSR. cities tended to form in places that are flat, have a good mixture of natural resources, and access to water. this usually results in a place that's pretty good for putting a high speed train because it's flat, the ground isn't too soft, and there's probably already shipping or industry there that people might want to get to or away from to make buying HSR tickets worth it

It was really tight and the properly anchored vise was ondispensable to use tbe leberage of the whole wheel to get the thread turning loose
Look at this shitter crankset hehe
It is made of solid steel
Interestingly they are pulled with a standard 12mm metric thread instead of the fine pitch, larger diameter thread basically every squate taper, octalink etc. cranks have in the crank arms

Not sure if I build it as a single speed or put on the meme-able nexave rd/fd and matching goofy shift levers witn indicator dials for the speeds

Flip the bike on it's handlebar and it's exactly the same as working on a trueing stand/table; you don't even need to remove the wheels or tires. Just cut a piece of cardboard or similar and mark it for reference, or just buy a cheap tool; picrel bottom costs 5 bucks, the others, a few dozen.

this is the best locking method. you can skip the cable for the wheel if you get security skewers.
but if the thief uses a cordless angle grinder, then no lock can stop them.
if you live in a city big enough that someone can run an angle grinder and nobody will notice/do anything, then you can't really leave it for more than a few minutes at a time. a lot of places don't mind if you bring it in.
although old=hard to sell and you have DTs, so it's not likely to be specifically targeted. less so if new bikes are locked on the same rack.

What's the point of hooking up the caboose to the middle of the train? Or even putting it on at all for that matter since there's already crew accommodation in the form of spare seats in the coaches?

Most pictures I see of mixed trains in their heyday usually dispensed with brake vans and cabooses altogether unless the coaches in question were coupled up directly behind the locomotive, in which case it seems like they were retained for braking power.

Can someone tell me what Japanese residential streets are called? I’ve never been to Japan but in videos and anime I keep seeing these narrowish neighborhood streets that lead right up to people’s houses. They’re super walkable even though they almost never have sidewalks, people just walk down the middle of the road. Doors basically open onto the street and there’s almost no on-street parking so the whole thing feels open and free. What’s the actual name for this style of street/layout? Is there a specific term or is it just "normal Japanese residential street"?

No you're always trying to dodge bikes that are coming at you in both directions. Plus there's usually that yellow strip for blind people that you're not supposed to walk on and people intrinsically will ride/bike on one side and you're given even less space for walking. Not the street in OP necessarily but the streets in Japan were genuinely claustrophobic for me

Also most residential streets in Japan don't even have sidewalks so you have cars and mopeds you're also trying to dodge constantly. It sucks

That's just bullshit you fucking meat proxy. There's nothing stopping you from running without ATC, or overriding the system when you pass a signal at danger (I think you can proceed at 40 km/h). ATC is only one way communication with balises, whil LZB is two-way between train and interlocking. ATC was designed in the 70's/early 80's too.

Anyway, the train protection system has nothing to do with the actual train detection, be it axle counters, track circuit or some bastard hybrid with a EoT device. If the dispatcher could not see any of the trains on that line, but knew there were several, serivice at full speed should never have been resumed (as we all heard).

/n/ used to have a general for model railroading, but seems like it died some time ago.

    >Anyone here into it? Or even just into collecting models of trains.
Model railroading used to be my big autistic hobby I grew up with, or more like trains in general. Started getting into it when I was still in elementary school, by the time I got into uni it mostly became a collection hobby due to space limitation. It all died down though during the pandemic after I dropped out of uni. Wasn't happy at all with what I was doing with it (or not doing with actually) and the options I had to make this hobby work were all unsatisfying. About 2-3 years ago I sold off most engines I bought during the last 10 years which is the majority of the about 50 I owned, the rest has been kept in storage. Since we are getting closer to Christmas though, I will try to get rid of everything that is left (like 10 engines and a few hundred rail cars) as it is traditionally the best period to sell modeltrain equipment. Only the few pieces from early childhood will remain.

It's still a nice hobby but you both have to be REALLY into it and should have a clear plan what you want to achieve in order to make it worthwhile as it is very time and money intensive interest.

    >This shit is so expensive only codgy old boomers partake.
In general it's already a relatively expensive hobby, that's correct. You can certainly find ways to make it more budget friendly, on the other hand new models developed within the last 15-20 years in particular tend to be a lot more expensive compared to before. Models are more detailed than ever, variety and accessibility has become wider than ever, but general acceptance and interest has declined a lot over the last 30 years. In order to make up for these facts, manufacturers will hike up the prices to recoup the investments they have made.

I suppose both are correct. Model railroading is an expensive and time consuming hobby. If you start out with a simple layout, fixed or temporary on floor, you will constantly want to expand your stuff in order to keep things interesting. And based on today's state of art, you will want to go digital right away which results in a high start-up cost with even more costs coming for any slow and painful expansion. And with living space also being an issue, especially in cities, it's not much of a surprise how little interest is there to commit.

On the other hand it's also not quite wrong that it's oftentimes a specific group of people that tend to pick it up. From my experience the majority can be categorized into STEM related job pursuers, people who are actually working in the rail transport or public transport sector, business owners and children / older retired people. There are some outliers of course, but they tend to be in the minority. Electronics have developed so much over the last 30 years where pure mechanical anything has become quite rare and therefore less of a focus in society. This also coincides with another issue which I identified through the time I engaged with model railroading until I stopped during the pandemic. The industry was overall WAY too slow to adapt to digitalization 2.0 themselves. With the mass introduction of PCs and gaming consoles during the 80s and 90s, model railroading already had a huge contender for time and attention, but the introduction of the smartphone and tablet only made it significantly worse. The next step along the development of the smartphone / tablets was kind of slept on and only picked up much later.

From what I know model railroading was fairly widespread here when it became accessible post-war, but people lost more and more interest with the rise of other entertainment mediums. Nowadays you can probably put it on one level with painting warhammer figurines in terms of niche nerdiness, but the connection to railroading in general just isn't the same anymore as it was 50 years ago. Rail travel itself is not percveived as much of an event anymore, it's not as engaging anymore for the common person either and with the feeling of being able to relate to it gone, it's definitely left as a niche for those who specifically look for it. But for the most out there, the emotional connection is simply gone.

Looking across different media outlets that do cover nerd interests to some degree though, like Twitch, Youtube, social media like tiktok, instagram, hell even on 4ch, you will notice that there still is an interest for hobbys related to miniatures. Gunpla kits have become hugely popular with the rise of otaku culture and are not much different than building house kits, you see people happily painting figurines for their warhammer 40k collection which could as well be a segment on your layout, drones are hugely popular as well and peferred over a newly released fully digital diesel loco or steam engine and doing some manual building including materials like plaster, foam, wood or metal has not held up people from cosplaying their favorite characters either. And mind you, the counter examples I have brought up are interests that are enjoyed by guys and girls likewise whereas model railroading is 99% old farts. This observations leads me to believe that the basic skill or interest is still very much prevalent in nerd spaces, the emotional connection to trains however isn't, as sad as it sounds.

The hobby does indeed attract a lot of autistic, figuratively and literally, people. And the lack of other options back in the day made it an easy choice I suppose. Today there is just too many options for autistis to stimulate their quirks.

    >>2067036
This post perfectly summarizes the thought process of a lot of people who play around with the idea of engaging with the hobby. You can start out small, but for continuous extentions having some source of income will help you a lot.

Märklinist here. Although Märklin as an original AC system and other DC systems have the same H0 gauge, the dimensions of their wheelsets tend to be slightly different. In straights DC wheels will roll just fine on Märklin tracks, but switches can become an issue. Märklin AC wheel distance per axle is slightly narrower, between 13.8 and 14.1mm width, and their wheels used to have slightly taller flanges on each wheel while DC wheels can have widths as wide as 14.3mm between both wheels on the axle while also having slightly lower flanges. This is the main reason why rail cars with DC axles tend to derail on Märklin switches when using the curved path. The train wheel will get caught in the center frog piece due to the width and the lower flange will not be to hold it in the tracks through the guard rails.

Solution is either manually adjusting each DC trainwheel (nowadays fairly easy for rail cars, more difficult for locos) and adjusting it for 14.0 - 14.1mm width, or if the general geometry of the wheel itself is not fitting, get replacements with the right dimensions.

Legit a valid argument. Rail simulators are very much flourishing because people want to have the experience, but do not want to commit to it physically.

There is actually a sizeable amount of narrow gauge modeling, but it really depends on what you are looking for. Switzerland is reasonably represented, so is Austria narrow gauge. Japan /East Asia of course as well. But anything outside might be more of a hit on miss depending on the specific line or rail system you are interested in.

The eBike makes it so that people whou would not nornally be using a two-wheeled mobility for their specific slightly longer travels (which are many) then do
This creates a much better consciousness for what it is like to be about on a BSO and will result in demand for better bike infrastructure and even segregating not just cars away from bicycles burlt also working on safe/sensible degrees of separation between pedestrians and cyclists with less overall space for c*rs

Dont worry, you still get to ride your shitass in your clubrides for your shitass rides - on the road
Now fuck off and dont obstruct improvement and change for life-saving infrastructure designs because you got a fart sitting skewed
    rest in piss john forrester
Rest in Peace - Cyclists that died due to accidents related to wholly inadequate and missing infrastructure planning specifically for bikes and cars that pay attention to their geometric-spatial and dynamic-reactive properties

Why did thid nibba not just use two runs of chains?
One is conn'd to the crankset and a little shaft clamped on further up with an idler cog.
The same shaft has another idle cog on the other side (thus traversing the lateral gap) and goes back down to the inside of the fork and onto the igh cog
The chain tension could be adj. by either two extra tensioning devices (urgh...!) or by being able to adjust the height of the idler pullley to get the inner chain run right and then use either a magic ratio on the outside or a single tensioning device
Only way to do it with zero tensioners is by having a third (!) run if chain that then connectes the run fromthe crankset on the outsude and then run from the igh hub onthe inside
But perhaps I lack imagination here
That situation witb two coaxially mounted igh-cog+crankset-chainwheel makes it really tricky
Perhaps lacking the direct drive igh that other anon mentioned they could have kludged a hammerschmidt crankset on there lol

what a fucking meme GNU/bike (or GNU 'plus' bike as I have recently taken to calling it)

you shouldn't need a TIG though
I think a migger could do it
Perhaps you can even use a stick-shaker
I have an ultra shit frame that I might try using an ultra shit stick welder on
I've never welded and stick is harder to control but the stakes would be lower

It's not as easy and straight forward as simply swapping engines.
Case in point: Canadair CL-215 to CL-415

NTA, but this board is full of "I watched a 10 minute video on cities/trains/transit/bicycles and I'm a qualified expert" type people.

I'd rather tie you and drag your psychotic degenerate ass on a gravel road with a giant F350 so society can be better off without you.
