    Now that's a shit bike.
    >>
    >>2053883
Living as I do in a culturally enriched town, I've had to put together a bike that's comfortable, reliable and visually repellant, for those occasions when I know I'm going to be leaving it unattended.

I have nicer bikes for recreational riding. More than once while locking it up it received snarky sideways glances from bike snobs, only for their cut lock to be laying on the floor when I return. Always good for a chuckle.
    >>
    >>2053892
I love it, the MX bar is a nice touch. I'd steal it.
    >>
    >>2053888
wth is that frame is it from an ebike or summin? also nice umaru sticker
    >>

    >only for their cut lock to be laying on the floor when I return
extremely based. is this the final form or do you have any more plans for it? favorite bike on /n/ and genius idea
    >>
    >>2053888
Hey, I have that same shitbike!
It's the Mongoose Transport, a full-size bike that folds in half.
And it's been a pretty good, durable bike I've owned for a long time, although I don't ride much.
    >>
    >>2053888
What's that blue fender on the front? Looks cool.
    >>2053892

But most of the effort is wasted, you could have just bolted on the v-brakes and left it at that.
    >>
    >>
    >>2054221
Are 26'ers the go to shitbike?
    >>
    >>2054223
    Yes, and here's why.
    >Most BSO tier cheapo bikes are 26ers
    >Some of the best made frames from the 80s and 90s were 26ers, but to the untrained eye they are indistinguishable from BSO's
    >Wheels etc are readily available and cheap

Most pro bike thieves dismiss 26ers almost out of hand, unless of course they spot a name they recognize or perhaps older rare parts that they know can sell for big money, but generally they're looking for new easy to sell bikes, and that tends to be 29ers and 700c.

You can build up a really nice practical and comfortable 26er for not a lot of money that will be instantly filtered out by most bike thieves.
    >>
    >>2053894
Weird how so many people think it either is or was electric. It just folds in half.
    >>2053969
Huh, never heard of the Mongoose version before. Another frame to look out for.
    >>2053969
It folds too! With the wheel off, you can slide it into itself and put flat against the fork, so you don't have to carry it separately. You can still find them on aliexpress if you search for folding fender, it's the rear one from the set. Without a bottom tube you kinda need a full-size front fender, otherwise you get wet up to your knees from every puddle.
If I need to take the rear wheel off too, I unclip these SKS fittngs and curl it up, with frame folded fully it won't uncurl into the top tube.
    >>
    >>2053892
has happened to me aswell, I left mine unlocked and came back to this guy pissed his ebike was nabbed lmao
    >>

Try to restore my friend's shitbike which is a 26" high tensile steel road bike from the 1970s. He's not willing to pay much for it but I've spent quite some dosh on it. Should I just keep it?
    >>
    >>2054289
    donate it to the homeless
    >>
    >>2054289
26" roadie? is it juvenile sized?
    >>
    >>2054295
they'll just sell it for crack

    >>2054312
it came with 26" wheels. Surely a 700c fits right?
    >>
I reckon I've put around ~700 miles on this thing so far this year. I got it at a garage sale for free. I had the rear wheel bearing completely fail about 100 miles ago but I got it fixed for about $15 using eBay parts. I take it on mountain bike trails all the time. I love it!

    Expensive bikes are CRINGE!
    >>
    >>2054331
    where are your rear brakes?
    >>2054328
No. 26" as in ISO590? Or 26" as in ISO 559? 26" ISO 590 is belivable and those MIGHT fit. Maybe.
    >>
    >>2054342

I just deleted them because the rear wheel was wobbling and hitting the pads. I ended up getting the wheel trued for $15 but I threw away the brake parts. It stops okay with just front brakes

    >Some of the best made frames from the 80s and 90s were 26ers, but to the untrained eye they are indistinguishable from BSO's
    >>
Me after completing a 130km ride recently

Found the frame in the bush, put other parts from another salvaged bike (had a problem with pedals, they didn't stay at 180° but one pedal wobbled from 150 to 180°, I replaced the parts and the problem reoccured and I didn't bother figuring it out since it's actually a pain in the ass to repair 40 year old shit)

Now my bike is a single speed (alright for my flat city) and I found another rusty abandoned bike from the 90s. It has a 7 speed hub gear (sachs super 7) and I will put those wheels with hub gear on my bike once the new tires arrive

The 130km ride was pretty hilly and was annoying with a single speed so I want some speeds

My friend who owns a 1500€ bike who I met at the end of my ride was like: "YOU RODE WITH THAT!?!?!? O.o"

Yeah bitch I also don't wear skinny bike clothes like a faggot

    >>
My shartmart agressive geometry mountain bike shaped object winter project. It's got an Aliexpress fork on it, stiffer rear spring and $40 Aliexpress 4 piston brakes that I haven't mounted yet. Ignore the cable shitters on it now. It's got like a 64 degree head tube now with the 130mm fork. It has a high bottom bracket too which will help when I mid drive convert it. It's got a steel rear triangle but the heavy fork actually makes it balanced somehow.
    >>
    >>2055399

Specialized Hardrock made with whatever parts I could salvage from my pile of scrap bikes.
Wally-World bike pogo stick fork, the only front brake assembly I could find that wasn't completely seized, ancient thumb shifter, busted rack held together with zipties, cranks with very worn chainrings (no front derailleur, I just keep it in the low gear anyways,) clapped-out seat on with a tube that's too small so I have it duct taped to the frame so it only spins a bit. And a milk crate.
    I call it the Crackrock.
It's like the bike equivalent of a farm truck. I ride it maybe a thousand feet to grab mail or whatever, and when I'm not using it it just sits outside against the steps.

not him but I didn't realize that. I've never had one but I thought they really did stiffen up the braking.
or maybe that's just in the case of really old model or poor quality brake arms?
    >>
    >>2056456
    >>2056441
it gives you a little bit more bottom end with your brake pressure, its useful when its wet, you can really grip it and rip it even harder than usual and lock up the wheel even with a soaked pad and braking surface
normal braking though its almost no difference at all, because all its really doing is mitigating a little bit of the frame flexing when braking very hard, the scenarios where you brake hard enough to flex the frame are few and far between as is, and the actual impact that has on braking performance is small

    but it looks cool

I responded with ughiughhah in my half conscious state when BAM, I get a full finger or two, once or twice, up the pooper making me fully conscious. shitbike update:
just realized the rear wheel is VERY offset to the left, almost thought it was completelly bent or something but the wheel is in good condition, its just the way the bike is i guess
the brakes were slightly adjusted to compensate for this but not nearly enough, so the left rear brake is completelly done for while the right rear brake is virtually brand new, unused
I adjusted the compensation to be even more extreme and now hopefullyi the good brake on the right will make contact earlier than the flat one on the left

Also tightened the front brakes further as i didnt tighten it nearly enough and it had tons of leeway
    >>
    >>2057212
your rim may not be dished i.e. whoever built it didn't tighten the right spokes and loosen the left spokes so that the rim pulled to the center over the cogs. if so, then the rim is pulled equally and centered over the hub flanges (like a front wheel) but not the real center including the cassette also. or maybe the cassette was changed to more cogs but it probably wouldn't fit into the dropouts on the frame in that case.
or, the stays on the frame that hold the dropouts maybe got bent in a crash.
it's weird that you notice it on the brakes but the tire isn't rubbing the stays, though. not really sure what's going on but these are some things to check, anyway.

It's the.... Zero maintenance, zero repairs, zero inconveniences, it is slow, makes me be present and in the moment, it's always in the right gear (Are you a glass half full or half empty guy?) It's just always 100% ready to rock and roll. Not always fucking with shit. "Oh the front fork is doing this and needs a rebuild now, rear shock leaks air, damn this new one has weird damping, countless suspension settings, tinkering with tire pressures, thinking what tread pattern is best, what tire TPI or rubber compound or sidewall construction is best for my trails... Chainrings and cassettes, dropper seat adjustments. Nice performance bike can be such a drag.

But the yard sale special? It's just STFU and ride bitch stop overthinking. That's what I like about it.
I may look into something that can fit 2" semi slicks though. I did swap to a chainring that's 2 teeth smaller and it has Chinese carbon bars now

just go slowly. don't be on a schedule. if you get frustrated, take a break or walk away.
start by applying oil to each nipple where the spoke comes out and give it some time to penetrate, then wipe the surface off vigorously.

on the most bent area of the rim, only tighten/loosen maybe slightly over a quarter turn. then do the adjacent spokes less. use the valve (or its hole if you removed the tire/tube ) to keep track of going around the entire wheel. at the end of one circuit, squeeze the spokes together vigorously with your hands (wear gloves) all the way around and recheck, then repeat everything. actually, I usually start with the squeezing, too.
keep going until your calipers are not hitting/showing light through within reason (there's always at least a tiny bit, but that's ok)
if you have a flat spot in the roundness, that's a related procedure but the above is much more common.
if you do above, you will not fuck the wheel.
remember, if you twist the wrong way, you can undo it.
also, while twisting, pinch the spoke with your other hand's fingers. if the nipple is stuck and you feel the whole spoke "winds up" before the nipple gives way and turns independently, mark the turn you're going for from when it breaks free. then gently back off the turn to untwist the spoke; the spoke and nipple will usually untwist together, which is what you want.
    >>
    >>2059340
    >back off the turn
    come to think of it,
I should have said: back off the nipple the amount the spoke twisted before it broke free, which will make everything right. I don't think the nipple and spoke move together (maybe?) but unscrewing the nipple the amount it twisted the spoke will make the increment correct. the act of doing so will untwist the spoke, but in my head I can't remember if the spoke and nipple move together or independently. but the technique works either way

You will be watching this video please:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERvMQHNF8Nk
The hub likely had 7 or 9 bearings on each side
Just count and see if it's closer to 14 or 18 bearings but it's extremely likely to have been 9 bearings and it's extremely likely they are the same size on both sides
Also: do you see how the part of the frame where the rear axle goes in is diagonal?
That can be a source of crookedness too:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MHBHFu4CrA
I HIGHLY suspect that this might have been the real cause for your "bike is off to one side in the frame" problem you had in the first place

    Great shitbikes in this thread
I think I've posted this Giant somewhat recently. I've had it forever and it's one of two bikes that survived a fire years back.
Four stainless steel hose clamps have been holding the chainstay to the dropout for over 10 years now without a budge. I could get it fixed but it's come to be a symbol of triumph for this bike.

There is something so comfy about the entry level groups I can't fully describe it. Maybe the fact that you pay peanuts to build something that just works with some used old bike or the fact that you can fully abuse those components. I personally get far more enjoyment building with shit components than getting some latest and greatest fad groups.

Having a modern higher end bike just never feels the same level of comfy and fun in comparison to cheap clunker

Just cos you don't steal bikes doesn't mean most bike theft isn't by niggers. Search your feelings, you know it to be true.
    >>
    >>2064685
yeah, I buy an old bike and keep everything stock and just ride it. THEN, if something doesn't perform right FOR ME, I'll replace it with something that does. but even then, I usually don't have to spend much to level up to what I need. there's so many good designs whose patents have expired, you can get decent, reliable parts for peanuts.
when I fix my normie friends' bikes, it's just a generic cable kit, a KMC chain, maybe a cheap tire. usually their parts just need oil and tuning, they all still work even if performance is low. they don't care about high performance, they've never experienced it, they're not good enough riders to push that envelope.

modern tourney is comparable to the first several gens of XT, probably.

There's just something extremely satisfying using an absolute piece of crap bike. It rides and shifts pretty good. Makes a ton of creaks, squeaks and rattles but it gets the job done

I leave it in the back of my truck and it gets rained and snowed on but I don't care. I never wash it or clean it. I don't have to worry about it getting stolen because I have other bikes and I'm just waiting for this one to break or something!

Best part is I got it for free. I've put over a thousand miles on it. It goes on a lot of beginner/easy mountain bike trails

I've never trusted Tourney, they have failed me one time too often. But I do appreciate all the Altuses and Clarises of the world, everyone tosses them out to upgrade to something supposedly better but they are actually great components if you give them a chance.
    >>
    >>2066311
what failed exactly? both tourney rear mech and altus have plastic parts in them and work the same, it's just altus has more range. The rest of tourney stuff is metal so I don't see how anything could fail.
    >>
    >>2066347
Altuses are thicker, tend to have less slop in the joints and have bushings in the pulleys. Every Tourney rear mech I've got to work with (four of them, including two kids bikes) eventually became impossible to set up, you had to do stupid stuff like shifting two up one down to get it to derail the chain at all. Altus, I've had one get slammed hard by a metal gate and it's just fine, bent the hanger back straight and didn't even need to set it up again, it just got back into the groove. Or was it Alivio? Dunno, I've sold that bike a long time ago.

Nakamura is a kinda shit brand here in Canada now unfortunately, but I don't know if this is even the same brand. It has a couple Miele stickers on it as well, specifically says Miele Design, so maybe some sort of old collab or sub brand?
When I picked it up, it had (nasty) white tape and whiteish cable housings, but I kinda like the contrast with black a bit better. Celeste would be cool though, maybe another iteration will play into the other accent colours.
Here's an updated pic, drive side this time.
    >>
    >>2066362
you started some shit here claiming altus is better quality when it's same plastic garbage with only difference being more cassette range and cancerous jockey wheel, arguing that low tier groups are better than the other is retarded and I must correct you since those low groups are made for different purposes and sometimes some tourney models will cost more than altus due to being very specifically made for older bikes.

the problem with you lot is that you never realize low iq cant be solved with education. in fact it only makes the problem worse. history dictates the outlier deserves a handout. combine stupidity + resentment = nonstop culture war. entitlement is the rule not the exception with them. the majority of the population extends grace, racists are the exception due to suburban segregation & insulation

i've heard kids like these kinds of bikes nowadays so i've built one for myself
i think they call them grab-all or something
    >>
    >>2066376
do you know what this sucker is made out of (tube set)? Lugs and crown are funky in a subtle way, hard to envision this as a shit bike per se, looks leggy
    >>
    >>2078532
yeah ive got one myself, fatty gravel tires with drops. it was fortuitous to find your pic. I was having reach issue even with the shortest stem I could find, never considered putting the stem on backwards i've got to try it
    >>
    >>2078532
huh. I wanted to hate the stem setup, but the more I think about it, it's probably fine or even good. there are a good handful of zero/reduced reach stems out there for off-road, but they're all super expensive (i.e. they're reviewed on the radavist.) although there's probably clones on ali, assuming they're any good. but something like that would probably steer better, even backwards. but not sure they're worth the money vs just doing what you did
    >>
    >>2078532
The $12 carbon print amazon saddle is what does it for me
    >>
    >>2078532
    >>2078544

I did the thing, I put on a short MTB stem the other way around. This has redeemed drop bars for me, the reach issues are gone now. For anyone wondering, there are no steering issues. The drops, hooks, ramps, and hoods hand positions are technically still ahead of the steering axis. But even using my swept back bars with hands waaay behind the steering axis has been no problems at all either.
    >>
    >>2078636
cool. the shorter stem seems a lot less clunky than what he did.
why zip ties to finish the tape, though? and why haven't you trimmed the extra?
    >>
    >>2078636
    this is a Moulton?
    >>
    >>2078640
thanks. the zip ties are holding the bag. it's actually my hiking hip pouch with the strap removed. i also zip tied a tire pump to the front of the bag.
the bar tape is Grepp tape, it's self-gripping without adhesive, starts at the top and finishes at the bar ends. holds on very good, no complaints

    >>2078641
yes it is. tsr hall se

    >Road brake levers
    >V brake in the back
    >Probably a long pull MTB disk brake in the front

That's unprofessional and borderline amateurish. In the sense that anybody with any technical knowledge knows that road brake levers don't pull enough cable for your brakes.
    >>
    >>2078650
Pretty good for the most part, if your cadence gets too high you'll start bouncing on the suspension. It can be stiffened up, but i like a plush ride.
    >>
    >>2078551
it is kinda sketchy on the tops, actually, only saved by otherwise very stable geometry (it's super easy to ride with no hands). but hoods and drops are in front of the pivot point so they are fine. a super short stem like that moulton anon has should make tops more ridable too, mine is just the shortest (and shittiest) stem i had on hand.
    >>2078653
see, you'd be right, except those aren't road brake levers. they pretend to be, but they clearly aren't because they brake just fine with long pull brakes. some kinda trick 2-position tektro levers.

    >>
    >>2078673
ride super aggressively until the frame breaks, then upgrade the frame and you'll have a nice and actually light bike worth... something, at least
    >>
    >>2078657
    >a super short stem like that moulton anon has
yeah, I was confused and was looking at zero-reach and similar that put the bar clamp *above* the steerer tube and are niche and tricky to engineer, so they're all expensive. but moulton anon's stem looks like a great solution because it's presumably cheaper than what I searched for. it might even work for you normally/forward.

    >>
    >>2078868
No but I started working on it again. I was working on my daily gravel bike and then stopped ridding when it got hot and lost all motivation to even look at a bike. I ran cables and taped my bars yesterday. Nearly done but am not going to ride it until temps drop.

ok, you got me, I was going by the size. my last MTB was in 1995. but its big and shiny and the drivetrain is shot and one speed. it looks ridiculous is all.
    >>
    >>2080511
    >my last MTB was in 1995

a modern entry-level hardtail is like an alien spacecraft compared to that shit. otoh I gave an old steel full-rigid to an unracer friend and he utterly destroyed the local skills park in front of all the yetis and ibis-havers, so who am I to judge?
    >>
    >>2080504
    >>2080507
Yeah the fork is garbage off some junkyard kid's bike. I wouldn't say it's seized but it's the clunkiest fork I've ever seen. It's also made for someone a third my weight. The idea here is to weld it out and weld on a simple pizza rack above the wheel. Rear wheel's gonna get swapped out with a nicer coaster+rim that doesn't weigh 10 pounds on its own, as well as a BB conversion for some bmx cranks or something.

    25.4mm seatpost
The sheet metal clamp was bent to subfunctionality so I tore it off /w a set of vise grips
I have the exact right removable clamp and will replace the qr with a bolt
Gonna have to get a long seatpost
    >>
    >>2084053
It even needs those externally mounted rear derailleur outlets
Perhaps I will just re-dish a so-called "shitass thread-on freewheel" rear wheel after replacing the axle+cones+bearings on it
I have a collection of axles from a kind dude that couldnt be arsed to hold onto them any longer (probably an intelligent call) but it will perfectly fit for my situation
Then I will pass it to someone else once more

After all I was chomping at the bit to get a proper use out of the freewheel reuser tool
It was really tight and the properly anchored vise was ondispensable to use tbe leberage of the whole wheel to get the thread turning loose
Look at this shitter crankset hehe
It is made of solid steel
Interestingly they are pulled with a standard 12mm metric thread instead of the fine pitch, larger diameter thread basically every squate taper, octalink etc. cranks have in the crank arms

Not sure if I build it as a single speed or put on the meme-able nexave rd/fd and matching goofy shift levers witn indicator dials for the speeds

With the nexave shifters it would be the spiritual successor of my stolen non-BSo shitter bike :(
