Write properly, behave politely, encourage a respectful community, and most importantly, GO OUTSIDE!!
Just a friendly reminder that threads about weapons which do not pertain to their use in outdoor activities should be posted on /k/ instead. Thanks.
One of these days you homos are going to appreciate me posting these all the time. I ripped a golden ticket and made it out to gyropalooza this year
20yo me is becoming self aware of where my future is headed. The thought of being a corporate work slave is haunting me day and night. Now I'm considering survivalism in the future. > now, the problems: I've never been out camping before . I don't know any people that know anything about this topic. infact , all my friends have pretty shitty lifestyles (myself included) I've never went out much in highschool , pent most of my time at home , was bad at pe. I have a bad diet and I rarely exercise. I'm pretty weak. You get the idea. >If anyone has ever 'trained' or 'prepared' for camping , hunting or any outdoor challenges then I'd appreciate any tips! I'm mainly looking for any small activities I could start with, important changes in diet , exercises to help with my aerobic performance etc
>>2880295I started solo camping + bushcraft camping at around 17. I was (and still am) pretty fucking fat. My major tip for you is to just get out there and do it. Also, bring more than 1 method of lighting a fire. stay safe bro.
>>2880295Become a forest ranger. They'll train you for it.
>>2880295Spend your weekends camping and wageslave during the week. After many years of practice, you will become a skilled survivalist. You cannot survive indefinitely in the wild anymore, unfortunately. Therefore it is necessary that you build a career and hopefully one day have enough funds that you can spend more time in the wild.
>>2880295Self sufficiency is impossible. Humans have always lived in groups and relied on others with only exceedingly rare exceptions. In current year this difficulty is made worse by diminished resources in nature, government oversight/taxation, satellite imagery, and increase in population. What you can do is work seasonally/sporadically, buy land, and build a cabin. You need money for taxes, tools, materials, food, medicine, etc. because you don't have a "tribe" to cooperate with, so the best compromise is to work a bit so you can have the rest of the year to yourself. It's what I did and it became very lonely and depressing because no matter how schizotypal you are spending months without human interaction rots your brain.
actually at your age getting a job is your future and it's time to train up and get settled into a well paying profession with future prospects fast.
Do you have a cosy truck camping set up?
>>2883492Hear that hammock bros, you ain't really camping.
>>2883492seethe
>>2883401No. I have umbrella.
>>2883401How do you keep mice out? I have a cover over my truck bed but the mice still find a way in, I'm guessing through the tie down holes.
>>2883758Never been an issue for me
the item doesn't need to be shit or useless, it just wasn't useful for your caseI bought a morakniv since I seen youtubers use it for splitting logs and other shit. I used it for splitting logs and making kindling from sticks but I leave it home now because I could still start a fire without it.another item would be a tarp. I bought one since it was going to rain but I ended up sitting by a tree with my rain jacket and I was like 99% dry
>>2883777You're retarded. Just because it's possible ylto split wood with a knife doesn't mean it's a good idea. You can split wood with a karate chop too.Moraknivs are good, cheap knives
>>2883777Which model, OP? Picrel is my regret Mora purchase. Tarps are pro-level. Give it another shot. It's the 1st thing I set up in camp. >>2883778Most of them are.
#544- “hat and headgear” EditionPrevious Thread:>>2880670 janny pls…Thinking about picking up a new hobby? Want to get a memecaster? Haven't mastered the Palomar knot? Click here!http://www.pastebin.com/u/fishingandtacklehttps://imgur.com/a/1Xw3NNew Bong Fishin Guidehttps://pastebin.com/sDB5SQTqTalk about fishin
There is a huge amount of japanese content now easily available in English due to YouTube AI translation. They are honestly more helpful content than Western fishing contents since they go into autistic details on how to use lures and techniques rather than just highlighting hype moments, catches, and meme challenge. Both official brand channels and sponsored 3rd party content creators go into crazy details about fishing and tackle that most western yt content creators can't match and their technique are more "modern" as well.
>>2883767not a big fan of japanese autism, sometimes it work great, but sometime it's just unnecessarily complicated for no improvement
NO MORE EXCUSES!I just bought a cheap table to tie flies. If I don't tie flies now, castrate me, quarter me, roundhouse kick me in the face.
>>2883779If you starting tying flies, you are already at risk of turning gay.
At what distance can a hike be considered "long"?
>>2880786kek, touch regolith son.
>>2880638Shit, I'm fat and go 3-4 miles with around 500ft gain starting from over 8k
>>2881113Imperial is inherently based, just the name alone "imperial" has more grandeur and status than chud "metric." Also, imperial is based in tradition and history, whereas metric was literally just made up by some self hating french libtards because the mention of God and Royalty made them seethe and cope.
>>2880647I took my two out of shape brothers on a hike where we climbed 3k ft over 2 miles and it gassed them even though it took less than two hours one way. Length doesn't mean difficulty, any mountain hiker knows that last quarter mile scramble can take longer than much of the rest of the distance
>>2880589it doesn't just depend on distance but i'd say longer than 5 hours at a moderate pace for a healthy adult
Crossbows arent archery edition. So we havent really had one of these threads in the fast handful of years. Post bow builds, your plans for hunting this upcoming season, your target species, your arrow build, etc.
>>2880707you went full retard, you never go full retard.my bow is the opposite of everything you said, running arrows that sit past the riser, got a slider, and using mechanical broadheads.meat is in my freezer. idk bro.
hope everyone season is goinng wellexcept for this guy >>2880707
>>2874206its bow season right now wherebi live. i didnt go this year because the deer always runs away after i shoot it. do i need to get better arrows or something? they are just the cheapest ones from walmart.
>>2874206Copepound bows aren't archery either. If you're trying to pull purity spiral bullshit use a stick and string. This is the kind of bullshit attitude that you think will push more hunters out of the woods so you can have better odds. But it only hurts the sport and erodes hunting rights.
>>2881872You're supposed to track it down after anon Jesus christ. Yes get good expanding broad heads and become intimately familiar with a deers biology and only take a double lung shot. With a bow and arrow unless you can guarantee a double lung shot you shouldnt let the arrow go. A double lung shot makes sure the deer bleeds like crazy, and it does quickly. After you shoot it you don't just go, oh well it ran away, go where you shot it and follow the blood trail. Then use your sense of direction and the blood trail to look for the deer. Search the whole woods and find the deer you shot.>>2881873I used to be a purist and only shot traditional but I've been hunting with my dads crossbow recently and I really like it. I want to hate it but I can't. I'm going to buy a nice narrow ass mall ninja crossbow on FB marketplace soon
I am moving away from the PNW to Buffalo NY what should i expect to /out wise?
>>2883482Wanting to be closer to civilization?
>>2883078I'm sorry
>>2883537
>>2883482OP is moving for work. Most people who move to NYS go to NYC for the big city experience. Usually, people only move to upstate NY to be closer to family (like aging parents). Otherwise, it's not worth the high taxes, dreary winter, and other disadvantages. At least OP will have the Niagara Gorge, Letchworth, Finger Lakes, two Great Lakes, Southern Tier, and Pennsylvania nearby. Could be worse. He could have moved to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois or Iowa.
>>2883482New York isn't openly fascist yet.
The ski season starts TODAY!Arapahoe Basin is the first ski resort to open in North America today at 11 AM.What are your ski plans for this year?
>>2883575Technically Ski Ward in Boston opened last week with a little patch of snow they had saved since last year, but like they were only open for 2 days, so I don't think that counts.
>>2883575My big plan for this year is to ski some Japanese powder in February :)
>>2883575Has anyone been to Gay Basin or Keystone yet?
Super El nino. 4 of 4 indicators show that winter 2026-2027 is going to be potentially record breaking in terms of how much and how often it is going to snow, specifically in the southwest. The two snowiest types of Pacific events, are weak la nina, and super El nino. Weak la nina biases North. While super El nino biases south. 2023 was a weak la nina in which Utah got 900 inches and California got 880 inches, with AZ getting 399 inches at Snowbowl and 250+ inches on the Mogollon Rim, Wyoming got 600 inches, and British Columbia got "only" got 380 inches. This winter 2026-2027, is significantly more biased south, but has enough moisture spread to still possibly get an average winter as North as Idaho and Montana, but will be extremely heavy even damagingly heavy in the southwest in terms of snow and storms.550 to 850+ inches are possible in *southern* Colorado and Utah. 400-550+ inches are possible in Arizona and New Mexico. Arizona has already been hit by 25 tropical storms since June. Wolf Creek CO has already had 20-30 inches of snowfall. Arizona snowball has already had 10-15 inches. Look at satellites right now of the east Pacific and western USA, that is the exact standard super El nino snow Jetstream coming down from Alaska and swirling smack into California and Arizona and pushing into Utah and Colorado and elsewhere. This will likely continue for most or all of the winter, but gradually begin dumping 3-9 feet snowfall single storm events as winter progresses. Peak season should be around February, as usual, but it is likely that by that time there will still have been multiple hundreds of inches of snowfall across the four corners region including in AZ, and also California.
>>2883770Also, by the time the multiple feet snowstorms start hitting back to back, probably mid November to Dec-Jan through March, avalanche danger may become extreme. Especially in Utah and Colorado and California. To give some historical context of how much snow may be present on the ground. The super El nino of 1972-1973, dumped 210 inches of snow on Flagstaff AZ, which is low elevation for those amounts, all of the strong and super El nino events dumped 130+ inches on Flagstaff. Additionally, the 1992-1993 event dumped 460 inches on snowbowl, the 2003-2004 event dumped 460 inches on snowbowl, the 1972-1973 event was poorly recorded but certainly beat those amounts as a single month March 1973 dumped 105+ inches at 8,000 ft in AZ and snowplowing Big Lake, Arizona took the entire summer of 1973, the snow wasn't cleared until September 1973 at 33 degrees north latitude 8,000 ft elevation in Arizona. That indicates a peak snow depth in excess of 15 feet, more likely around 20-30 feet, in Arizona. Utah and Colorado and parts of California have much more extreme possibilities during strong events like those. This winter shows a strong resemblance to those extreme years, except all indicators show this winter to be *more* powerful.

>>2881381Those totally suck even with a drill. Caught a clip of that Moonshiners show, watching careful & saw they were doing apples with a Harbor Freight chipper/shredder.Even full price (shouldnt be hard to find a coupon) it is 100% worth the money, have to open it up a bit or cut the apples small enough to fit. Got one to use for cider & it kicks ass gives a nice non chunky finer shred & I think it increased the juice yield.
>>2883691It's been incredibly warm in the midwest. Our average first frost date was over a week ago and there's no frost in the forecast for at least ten days. I'm still getting strawberries and tons of lettuce
Harvested my pumpkins a few days ago. I’m going to roast the seeds either today or tomorrow. Do any of you have a certain way of roasting them?
>>2883749It's 40 degrees at night in the South so most of my annuals are halted or dead. Leaves are falling.

Are you ready for your night /out/ings to be ruined by techbros?Paid light pollution coming soon *TM.>https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/astronomy-and-society/a-satellite-company-tested-sunlight-as-a-service-without-astronomers-knowledge/
>>2883740They already are. Light pollution affects a wide area around the source, especially since LEDs have been installed en masse for application they are intrinsically not suitable for.
>>2883742LEDs don't have to be intrinsically a bad thing, Flagstaff AZ is the first city in the US to switch to dark sky friendly LED lights to prevent light pollution.https://www.flagstaff.az.gov/3818/Street-Lighting-Dark-SkiesMost localities just don't give a fuck enough to install them.
they could do this dumbshit in those countries that don't get sunlight in winters
>>2883743Yellow street lights are pointless if everyone has an ultra bright 5000K LED porch light.Pima County, AZ actually has a much stronger outdoor lighting code. Outdoor lights over 3500K are banned and the fine is $750 to $10,000 a night. But the main offender is the city of Tucson where at least 50,000 violations have been installed since 2020 and code enforcement is non existent.
Does anybody have any experience or stories to tell about winter camping
>>2880914Yes, plenty
>>2882591jesus christ anon, that's not how you pitch it
>>2880914I have winter camped hundreds of nights and quite enjoy it but I never do it just out of a backpack. You end up wanting a lot more stuff for comfort and it is tough to carry it all if the snow is deep. I go by snowmachine, train, or pulling a sled. I've also slept in my truck a lot in winter but I'm not gonna count that.>let your tent ventilate to minimize frost>add sacrificial layer to sleeping bag so you can shake frost off>avoid being sweaty and dress breathable>sleep with warm water>spare socks>slippers so you only have to put cold boots on once per day>eat carb heavy and eat often>put water in snow or sleeping bag to prevent freezing>drink warm beers>dress slightly warm when stationary, slightly cold when active (layers)>avoid gas stoves when extremely cold (even if fuel works, gaskets can fail)>keep batteries warm or they will failComment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>2880973just add 10 deg c to the ratings if you're a cold sleeper how much difference does putting on 5kgs for the winters make i wonder
Every time I've winter camped, I get a bone-chilling feeling for the next few days unless I sweat it out. As in, even if my house is 70F+ and I'm wrapped up in a blanket, I still feel cold. This is countered by a very hot sauna or going on a hard run to sweat.Although we are always so unprepared and sometimes you're up all night just rubbing your feet to stay warm or build yourself a quinzhee in the wind lol.
autumn is my best friend now
