General thread for freediving and/or spearfishing, since I don't see one mentioning either. My personal questions: I've been thinking about taking a certification course so I can learn to do these things correctly and safely. I'm probably happy just doing the diving, but spearfishing seems like an easy and practical extension. I only casually skindive and rod-and-reel fish at the moment. Does anyone have experience taking such a course? I know I'll need my own gear early on, but each instructor I can find seems to have their own equipment shops, so I imagine they wouldn't be impartial about the quality of other gear on the market. I live on the Pacific coast of the US, so I see that a 7 mm open cell wetsuit is strongly recommended. What good/bad features should I look out for on wetsuits and other equipment? For non-competitive diving, carbon fiber fins are almost certainly not worth the price, right?

What does your backpacking kit look like & what are your favorite pieces of gear you have that are unusual or greatly increased your quality of life on the trail? This is my basic kit alot of the gear is 10 years old or more I have recently added a camp chair & a little bidet that goes on a water bottle. My favorite piece of gear is not pictures but it is a frybake pan which is basically a lightweight dutch oven I will be using it on my trip at the end of this month to roast a chicken & make stuffing.

This is a thread for enjoying a pipe while doing outdoor activities. If you ask why this belongs on /out/, you've never spent an evening by the campfire with a pipe or bowl or blunt or spliff or joint or vape or edible or dab or oil, silently enjoying the nature around you, and you're missing out. >How to get started Purchase a cheap glass pipe (or a simple wooden chillum) and a bag of some quality outdoor or mid-grade weed from a dispensary or your usual guy. You will need a lighter and something to clear the bowl witha paperclip works well if you don't have a proper tool. Pack the bowl loosely, enough for airflow but enough to stay lit. Light the corner of the bowl and inhale slow. Smoke slower than you think you need to, the flower tastes best when it isn't cherried too hot. Tamp and corner or re-light as needed. If you still have trouble, try different methods on YouTube until you find one that works for you. Or you can just roll it or whatever. >smoking ganja will get you arrested Originally, the government found that weed smokers, following a careful study of the statistics (at a time when hemp was a cash crop) were just peaceful people who wanted to grow their own medicine, enjoy jazz and engage in mild tomfoolery. Nowadays, weed is being legalized against while the average American thrashes in the thralls of poverty. Put two and two together. Marijuana is just another good thing that was under attack by the government. >muh tobacco Not the time or place (unless you're European.) Start your own thread. All cannabis users welcome.

Post your tents, your tentfu, which will be your next acquisition, etc I currently have my first tent (a typical cheap igloo camping tent, Hummer Igloo 3+) and 2 ultra light 3 season tents (forclaz mt900 tarp tent for 1 and 2 persons). I have used the latter in high mountain before, during summer (which is still cold), but usually in this part of Los Andes the wind is too strong for my tent. So I'm planning to buy a 4 season tent more appropriate for high-altitude and strong winds. Around here most people use the mountaineering line of Doite, pic related would be the one appropriate for my needs. The thing is that here tents are particularly expensive (that one costs +400usd), and I think I might be able to buy something half that price in the US, but I'm not familiar with US brands. Which one would you recommend?
    R: 51 / I: 9▶
Every single axe I have ever used that looks like picrel has the head start coming loose after only a few weeks. Every single time. It's retarded that I can't buy a wood handled axe that is made correctly out of the box. Even with premium brands like Gransfors, while the heads may not come loose, they are hung crooked half the time, and there's no store where you can pick out a straight one in person. I don't have time for these shop projects to fix these issues myself, an axe should just be fucking made right.

Last thread >>2856593 This is a thread for enjoying a pipe while doing outdoor activities. If you ask why this belongs on /out/, you've never spent an evening by the campfire with a pipe silently enjoying the nature around you, and you're missing out. >how to get started Purchase a corn cob pipe (or a cheap briar pipe) and a pouch of Half and Half or Captain Black tobacco from a smoke shop or online. You will need a lighter or match, and something to tamp it with--a large nail works well if you don't have a pipe tool. Fill the pipe with tobacco, pack it down halfway, top it off, pack it down to 3/4, top it off again, pack gently and enjoy. Smoke slower than you think you need to, the tobacco tastes best when it is burning cool. Tamp and re-light as needed. If you still have trouble, try different methods on YouTube until you find one that works for you. >smoking a pipe will give you cancer Originally the Surgeon General found that pipe and cigar smokers, following a careful study of the statistics (at a time when most adults smoked, so they had a good sample size), had insignificant death rate increases. Nowadays, tobacco is being legislated against while hard drugs are being legalized. Put two and two together. I wanted to start biking trails and being more active. What sort of bike should I be looking at? I live in a rural area and own a car so I won't ride in the city too much. Googling suggests gravel bikes, is that a good option? I'm pretty handy so I can do maintenance myself and even upgrade parts. Is there something that has a good frame + decent parts that I could upgrade down the line into a great bike? I'm willing to spend a bit for something good quality but I'm not looking for a $10k bike. Sorry if this isn't the right board for this question

I'm here, but I'm gonna find myself homeless in the next few months, what do I need to be a hobo? So far I have >tent >backpack >two ponchos >a few tarps >a butane stove >sleeping bag >tent fold up mattress Thing is I'm not sure I can carry all this on my back at the same time, at least not without walking extremely slowly. I'm mildly disabled and broke my spine a few years ago and I'm worried about being bogged down with gear, especially considering my tent is a large, pop-up tent that doesn't dissassemble into parts >just use your car If I use my car the local cops will take it off me, being poor and homeless is not allowed in Ireland and they'll take everything off me So should I get a new tent? or is there a backpack that I can get that will allow me to carry a tent and mattress easily, even if I'm using a crutch to walk? Thanks anons, I'm hoping you guys can help me plan my homelessness a bit better cos I've not been camping in years

How dangerous is solo backpacking? I live close to Appalachia and any time I talk to someone about going on a solo trip people talk schitzo-tier about how I'm going to die, disappear, or worse. Not even because of the nature specifically, but because of le paranormal, inbred mountain people, cannibals, accidentally stumbling upon illegal operations in the mountains (heard this one specifically a lot), etc. You get it, the list goes on. Anyways, is there any truth to the danger or is it just the average small-town tall tales and superstitions? Seems unlikely to me as I feel like if it was so dangerous you'd be seeing a lot more of it in the news.

No but seriously, why cant i just buy a cabin and live there instead of a normal house? Its cheaper, more private and gives me great opportunity to do outdoor activities. Lots of cabins run on solar and have adequate plumbing, yet the cost remains low. Only thing i could think would be a challenge is winter, but even then i think a 4x4 and backup heating/electricity and lots of firewood. It would also give good homesteading opportunities.

How is your experience with night hiking, anons? There's a big forest reserve in the middle of town and I want to lose track of time and walk around in it at night. It might be the difference of only a few people I'd otherwise meet but I want the peace of knowing I'm alone. There are some coyotes apparently but no bears or montain lions probably. I bought a bear horn and a stick just to be careful. Anyway I feel like I could walk forever in this sort of environment and I'd get a lot of exercise

What's the best form of self defense you can get outside of a firearm? I've been looking at things like high powered CO2 kinetic round launchers and lower powered pepper ball launchers, but I'm not entirely sure that kind of thing would be effective at stopping much of any kind of threat. I'd like to think the pepper balls would be more effective at stopping a human threat, maybe there isn't a kinetic round launcher out there that's powerful enough to work without being just a gun. I'd also like to ward off wild animals and violent dogs. Any ideas?

Hello everyone Offboard faggot here, I'm going to montana in October of this year. Gonna be staying in redlodge, which is an hour away from yellowstone Anyone have advice about the best spots to visit? It's a huge park and while it won't be the only thing I'll visit, Im definitely going to try to spend maybe 3 or 4 days there. I'm going for 7 in total. I'd also appreciate any suggestions for other things to do in southern montana, mostly, but I am open to seeing parts of wyoming, too I'd like to be able to see some kind of big lake and go on a boat or something. Hotsprings would be cool. I assume there are atleast some spots as it's a le supervolcano Some things I've looked up already are >bear tooth senic drive >a couple trails around red lodge >a senic dinner train I couldn't get tickets for :( >a zoo in billings to be able to see all the yellowstone animals in a more controlled and safer setting Any suggestions and advice would be appreciated!

it feels pretty fucking lame to pay 20$ for a couple of grams of permethrin emulsified in water. the chinese will sell me a big ass bag of technical grade permethrin for almost nothing, but going that route means i'll have to find some sort of emulsifier and surfactant, and probably some sort hydrocarbon solvent. people bitch about using 10% ag grade permethrin concentrates, because they stink like gas and leave an oily film on your gear. i'm blown away that i can't seem to find people making their own permethrin soak """from scratch""". it's always just diluting a concentrate. so i'm wondering what you do to treat your clothes to see whether or not i actually want to go down this rabbithole to "save" maybe 50$ a year on permethrin treatment.

I posted this thread on the travel board, but I thought maybe you guys would be able to give me some advice too... So this is gonna sound really stupid and crazy, but I'm so fucking miserable and I just hate my life and I'm so bored all the time just tired of everything. And I'm out of shape, and I'm really stupid and worthless. I can't take care of myself. I'm addicted to self destruction and I want to change so bad. I want to do something really dramatic, something that will shock my whole nervous system into survival mode so I can find God and become the Man I know I can be. Sorry this is really melodramatic and unhinged, I'm kinda cringe. But I want to walk.. like from my house all the way to Alaska. I just want to walk there. I'm broke, I have no car and very little money. But I figure I could just walk there, and start a new life. I know it would be hard. I have about $3000 in savings and I would probably need that mostly for food and stuff along the way. I might have to figure out news ways of making money on the way. I'd need to figure out all kinds of things. What I'm most worried about is freezing to death in my sleep and encountering territorial wild animals somewhere. Besides that I also worry about being robbed or murdered by other humans. This is sort of a radical question, so I'd appreciate any and all opinions / advice / suggestions things I should learn / read / buy before I go. Or on the way. I know this is probably stupid but please try to keep an open mind..

Lease is up in October and considering a stint of car homelessness to save money and get out of credit card debt I can pay rent but my life goals just don’t feel accomplishable if I do. Right now I work 56 hours a week 7 days a week between 2 jobs, but I was out of work for a year after breaking my leg in an accident, a lady hit me while I was uninsured. I have been without internet and utilities since march, so it won’t be much of an adjustment, if anything I will probably shower more often. I checked /trv/ and here expecting a van life general or discussion but didn’t see one. It’s not the first time I’ve lived in my car, I did it for a year 7 years ago. I know all the basics in the nomad wiki already just from experience and more. It would be nice to hear what anons think about portable batteries and car refrigerators for these purposes since I have some money to invest in my set up. Back then it was real desperation, it was fun at times but also very boring, I lost my mind a bit. This time I guess it will just be the fun parts cooking camp meals and going wherever I want, at least for the night. My car is totaled but it still drives, my goal is to get a vehicle upgrade before I worry about a place to stay. Any van life or car homeless anons lurking?

It's weird because there was a sixth night I was in a tent, way back in 2021, when I did get some sleep. not during the night, mind you, because I was new and underprepared and was shivering from cold during the whole night. but when the sun came up and the temperature increased, I was able to sleep 2 hours in the morning. and in 2022 I tried sleeping in a Haven tent (lie-flat hammock, pic related), and in this I slept great the entire night. I've tried varying the amount of air in the matress, from fully inflated to somewhat soft, but this had no effect on my sleep. would be nice to hear if anyone else have dealt with the same and found a solution.

Something drinkable that has decent protein, and also won't make me paint the heels of my boots in the middle of nowhere. Does anyone have good advice on how to get rid of hornets around the garden? I discovered (painfully) a nest of bald faced hornets in a bush right next to my garden gate. They attacked me when I was pruning, stinging me repeatedly. To make matters worse, there is also a ground hornet nest nearby that is active. I garden organically--but frankly, the poisons don't work all that well (have used them in the past). I set out multiple bait traps containing apple juice, boric acid, apple cider vinegar (to repel good bees). It seems to be helping--the hornets take it back to their nest and feed it to the queen and larvae. But it is a slow process. Has anyone tried other techniques to get rid of them? They have caused me to avoid going into one whole section of my yard.

An extremely basic question, but an important one. There are many ways to go /out/ - how do YOU do it? Do you drive to your nearest state park/reserve and walk the trails with others? Do you prefer to be alone, instead venturing into your backyard or local forest to hike and or camp? Do you venture to the local park and trudge through through the bush since walking a pre-created "trail" does not count as true /out/doorsing? Sitting on 4chan and posting on /out/ does not, unfortunately, qualify with the topic of this thread. Unless of course you are doing it outside. That counts I guess.

I have a job where I often talk to all types of people about the weather and one thing ive never understood is the natural inclination to associate a rainy cloudy day with bad feeling. I get not wanting to get soaked but to me theres this immediate blissful feeling when I breathe in the air from a rainy day. Im sure you could reference our evolutionary history, rain put out fires and tattered your home but it also made for a more bountiful crop, nowadays places that dont get enough rain suffer for it. I live for the rain and as an avid hiker im way more likely to want to tromp through the woods on a misty day or even rainy day.

I cannot seem to find a backpack that has at least two (upper and lower) dedicated externally accessible zippered pockets on the outside like this pack does. They stopped making this pack years ago, but all the similar size (20-30L) packs I am looking at - and I do want something slightly larger to hold more changes of clothes - don't seem to have as useful a pocket arrangement where I can have two pockets on the back where I can access important stuff like medication and my wallet from without having to totally open up the main pack. Pic related is what I use now, but it falls apart after a while and isn't that sturdy. I'd like something that lasts longer without falling apart, and is slightly bigger, but not too much bigger.

My goal is mostly winter backcountry travel. Basically: snowshoeing sucks. I want to keep hiking and camping through the winter. I already have all the other gear and have done a fair amount of winter backpacking and even some mountaineering. I want a setup I can grow into as I move into higher angle terrain, but I want it to be okay for random rambles in rolling terrain and cross country flats. I don't see myself doing too much intense downhill and don't care if I can "charge hard" or "send it" or whatever. I get that a "one size fits all" / "quiver killer" setup will come with trade-offs. I've basically narrowed it down to three options: XCD - I suppose this will be better at the XC side, but comes with a limit on the terrain angle. I get the sense that most of the D in XCD is just "telemark on shitty skis", which from my understanding is harder than all the other options here if you aren't already a competent free-heel skier. "Skishoes" - aka Hok Skis / OAC / Glidelites / Skinbased skis. This seems ideal in theory, especially in that they are intended as "less shitty snowshoes", but I think come with the same tradeoffs as XCD, just a lower barrier to entry and lower efficiency. Most reviews of these from experienced skiers say they suck, but I am not an experienced skier. Ultralight AT setup - thinking a low tech binding on an touring ski with climbing focused ski boots. Again, the focus here is not so much on downhill as it is on "getting around the backcountry in winter", but I think such a setup probably has no upper limit on the angle or terrain it can be used in, limited only by my experience level. Drawbacks are this is obviously more expensive (though I found a pair of high end mountaineering ski boots at the local used gear shop for like, nothing, and they're relatively comfy) and might be overkill. I live in the /out/ paradise of Northern Idaho. So the terrain is all over the place. I have literally zero interest in resort skiing.

Any deer hunters in here? I had a crazy experience last night, it was dark and I took my dog out down the driveway, (deep in the national forest of northern Michigan). Suddenly all these huge birds in the fully grown maple trees above start flapping there was probably 20 of them. I’ve seen a flock of about 20 turkeys in the area that past few weeks mostly younger ones 1-2 years old and a couple older females. They start flapping like crazy above and my dog starts going crazy and runs into the woods. I’m calling him and he doesn’t come, so I start shining my light around and see him in the trees like 20 feet from the driveway. He doesn’t even respond or look at me. As soon as I stepped one foot into the woods, I just start smelling this god awful smell. Before I can even react further, my dog starts rolling around and I scream NO! I run over and with my flashlight see all these fresh drops of blood around that look like chunks of flesh mixed in. The smell was just nasty. I pull my dog away and start looking around and I can just tell he has blood lust now totally crazed. I’ve only seen dogs acting this way when their owners got a deer and brought it home and the dogs get deep ancestral memories triggered. Couldn’t find any dead animals around, but the smell was just nasty in like a 20 foot radius of the area. This morning I went back out and the smell was mostly gone, there was a few large drops of blood but it had mostly dried now. No puddle or sign that an animal died there. The only thing I can figure is a deer hunter got a gut shot from a deer and it ran away and cut through my yard and dripped gut shot blood. But kept running and died somewhere else. I don’t even know if the birds flapping around were related to the blood or not but just a coincidence. If they were vultures or just wild turkeys roosting in the area. Pic related one of the dried chunks I found this morning when I went back to investigate.
