    Crossbows arent archery edition.
So we havent really had one of these threads in the fast handful of years.
Post bow builds, your plans for hunting this upcoming season, your target species, your arrow build, etc.

    What state is this?
    >>
    Why are compound bows expensive?
What's wrong with a reasonably priced bow?
    >>

    GA.
We're lucky to be able to take 10 does and 2 bucks per season. Hogs have no limit, season, and are really good eating when prepared right.

    >>2874980
How hard is it to rabbit and squirrel hunt with a bow? seems like it would be difficult because of such a small target? what ranges are you shooting them at?

    >>2875013
Bear makes decent bows, prices aren't bad either. buy one that doesn't break the bank and just shoot it until you figure out you like it or until you get really good at it. Most bow tech peaked in the 90's so you're not going to see a massive difference if you bought one that cost 2k vs $350

This. I have a Blackout Epic and it does everything I want it to. I do plan on upgrading a few parts here and there, but last year was my first year bow hunting and so I wanted to get a feel for it first.
    >>
I've thought about getting into bow hunting, I'd get a longer deer hunt season, and I have a friend who gets a lot of hogs near his land and a bow wouldn't alert the neighbor's dogs like the .308 does.
    >>
    >>2875341
It gets addicting and you'll eventually won't want to hunt with anything else because of the challenge bow hunting gives. You do have to get closer and getting the perfect shot is much harder than with a rifle. You have to learn discipline that firearms hunting doesn't teach you, and you'll start taking your time to get that perfect shot and when you do it makes the payoff so much more fulfilling.
    >>
    >>2875403
That's what I'm hoping for. It's easy to take out a hog from 150 yards but getting to 30 or so with a bow will make me improve overall.
    >>
Have any of you hunted black bear?
How about in a national forest?
    >>
    >>2877447
Yes, I haven't taken one yet, but I find most of the sign to be around places where you find forage wild blueberries, grapes, persimmons, etc.

Some ridgelines have more sign and scat than anything else. just keep scouting, spot and stalk, or if you're in a place that allows bait.
    >>
    >>2877695
No bait, this will be late october so soft mast is probably gone by then.
The area I'm going to scout are Oak/Hickory ridges that also have a pond on the ridge with a creek several hundred feet below, it's public and far away from people. Quite a hike just to get where I want to be.
    >>
    >>2877734
Sounds like a good plan, I've spoken to many hunters who have taken bears and all mentioned spot and stalk as the preferred method of hunting them if not baiting. Make sure you're pretty knowledgeable about where their lungs and heart are for the optimal shot.
    >>
    >>2877786
I'd be lucky to ever spot them outside of shooting range, there's maybe 60 yards of visibility through the timber and brush.
I think I'm going to have to scout for fresh sign in large amounts where acorns are plentiful and either hunt in that area or attempt to follow the route of travel to catch up to the bear if the wind permits.

Thats the gayest bow I have ever seen. Maybe put even more random bullshit for pussies on it

any reccomendations on a minimalist compound bow? i have a nice traditional longbow i like loosing arrows at a range and in the back paddocks with but i cant exactly get "consistent" accuracy on it without dumping another thousand hours into learning every single intricate detail about how and why im going wrong so i think i might give compounds a go as i can outfit a compoud with things like a sight and range markers for hopefully more consistent hits and ease of use but i see videos and pictures of compounds and it just looks like an absolutely bulky disaster ready to snag on the local australian bush and just fking shred itself instantly is there any type or make of compound that is
    >small
    >not shit fking everywhere ready to catch
    >preferably compactable or easily attached to a hiking bag as i go for solo camps and hikes when hunting the local pigs
    >40-65 lbs draw weight as i cant pull much more than that
unsure if this is a neccesary for a compound but i dislike the "hehe use this trigger mechanism to release the string" id rather just use my fingers with a glove if possible either that or has anyone tried the sights attachments like picrel that go onto longbows and recurves? im hesitant to buy it as it might do certifiably fuck all for accuracy and is just a meme purchase

Got this used for 500 bucks at scheels. Never hunted anything with a bow yet but damn the rabbits in the backyard are asking for it.

    any recommendations on releases?

Bored sitting an elk wallow in Arizona right now hunting bulls.

    Here are some bow redpills:
    >Adjustable sights are for larpers, why would you add more complexity to an already complex system? You're really going to shoot something beyond 60y or are you going to have time to range and dial to the exact yardage the animals is before you shoot? Also having to print sight tapes everytime you change your setup is lol. Actual hunters use 5 pin fixed. Also vertical pins are a meme you can't even pin gap.

    >Range finders are a meme. I've lost so many opportunities because I tried to range or wasn't sure of the range. For an Elk, all you have to do is put your 50 pin on the elbow/brisket area and let her rip. As long as the animal is 45 yards or less you're hitting the vitals. This can work for deer too, you gotta verify but you probably want to aim at the knee.

    >Most shops cut arrows with an extra inch or 1.5" in front of the arrow rest. That's a waste, all you need is 1/2", now you can run shorter arrows meaning you can add more weight to the front or keep them lighter so they fly faster, they will also be stiffer.

    >Don't pull the trigger on your release with your finger, pull with your back. Use a trigger release that has 0 travel like Carter Like Mike II. Joel Turner's shot IQ system for shooting is a game changer.

    >Use fixed blades if they fly with your field points, why add more variables with a mechanical to an already complex system? If your bow is outta tune and you can't get it to group with fixed only then run a mechanical.

My shoulder was injured for almost half a year, and my bow needs to be restrung; I'm so far out of practice I think I should sit this deer season out. The weather has been too hot up until just a few days ago anyways.
    >>
    >>2880707
you went full retard, you never go full retard.

my bow is the opposite of everything you said, running arrows that sit past the riser, got a slider, and using mechanical broadheads.meat is in my freezer. idk bro.

hope everyone season is goinng well

its bow season right now wherebi live. i didnt go this year because the deer always runs away after i shoot it. do i need to get better arrows or something? they are just the cheapest ones from walmart.
    >>
    >>2874206
Copepound bows aren't archery either. If you're trying to pull purity spiral bullshit use a stick and string. This is the kind of bullshit attitude that you think will push more hunters out of the woods so you can have better odds. But it only hurts the sport and erodes hunting rights.
    >>
    >>2881872
You're supposed to track it down after anon Jesus christ. Yes get good expanding broad heads and become intimately familiar with a deers biology and only take a double lung shot. With a bow and arrow unless you can guarantee a double lung shot you shouldnt let the arrow go. A double lung shot makes sure the deer bleeds like crazy, and it does quickly. After you shoot it you don't just go, oh well it ran away, go where you shot it and follow the blood trail. Then use your sense of direction and the blood trail to look for the deer. Search the whole woods and find the deer you shot.

I used to be a purist and only shot traditional but I've been hunting with my dads crossbow recently and I really like it. I want to hate it but I can't. I'm going to buy a nice narrow ass mall ninja crossbow on FB marketplace soon
