Welcome to /diy/, a place to: Post and discuss /diy/ projects, ask questions regarding /diy/ topics and exchange ideas and techniques. Please keep in mind: - This is a SFW board. No fleshlights or other sex toys. - No weapons. That goes to /k/ - Weapons. The workmanship and techniques involved in creating objects which could be used as weapons or the portion of a weapons project that involves them (e.g., forging steel for a blade, machining for gunsmithing, what epoxy can I use to fix my bow) may be discussed in /diy/, but discussing weapon-specific techniques/designs or the actual use of weapons is disallowed. Things such as fixed blade knives or axes are considered tools, things such as swords, guns or explosives are considered weapons. - No drugs or drug paraphernalia (See Global Rule 1). If you want to discuss something that could involve such things (e.g., carving a tobacco pipe from wood) that's fine, but make sure it's /diy/ related and doesn't involve drugs or it will result in deletion/ban. I have a 1 year + 27 day old microwave and it's blowing a fuse when I try to use it. I'm not sure what's wrong with it and I'd like to save it from a landfill. It came with a 1 year warranty and warranty expired like 20 days before it broke and the company (Hamilton Beach) refused to service it. I rarely used it and I've used it maybe 20 times to warm up some food over the past year. After I used it last time, it died while cooking in mid-cycle. I could see a flash of light. When I opened it, I saw a blown fuse. It uses those small glass fuses and I had to order them from Amazon. I was hoping it would be as simple as replacing a fuse but obviously that's not the case. Clock and electronics works fine but it immediately blows a fuse when I try to actually cook with it. What's wrong? What can I check? I have a DMM.

I got a new 25.4 cc 2-stroke power head from ECHO and was using it today. I did not expect it to be as powerful as it is. It's the PAS-2620 model and it has a modular attachment system. I was using the string trimmer attachment with it and it was obliterating everything in its path with ease. It's super fun to use, I'm going to play with it some more tomorrow. Coming from a 4-stroke Craftsman, the ECHO somehow feels more powerful than that. And the string is much more durable, I don't know why that is. Not to sound like a shill, I guess the downsides are it's pretty expensive and with 2-stroke you have to mix 2-stroke oil with gasoline. Which isn't too bad and if you factor in that you can use the power head with all sorts of attachments it might save you money compared to buying a bunch of different dedicated non-modular power equipment. It's super powerful so you get what you pay for I guess. Can't wait to use it some more. Anyway, what power equipment have you anons been using?

So my neighbors sold their house, and an old lady with her probably 45 year old cave man looking neet son moved in next door. Today seems to be their first day to actually live in the house, and their dog is in the back yard just fucking blasting. I went to meet them and say hi and mentioned the dog in passing, and they just kind of said hehe yeah he likes to bark. I want to stop this shit right now, hopefully without getting the cops involved. My first idea is maybe a loud speaker pointing at their house connected to a raspberry pi with a microphone that blasts dog barks loud as fuck pointed at their House every time the rpi detects a dog bark. Kind of like a jeet shaker but more advanced. Btw I'm a cripple in a wheelchair, and not going to be able to do anything crazy, so I have to either do this passive aggressive as fuck or something... anyone have any ideas?

Last Threads: https://warosu.org/diy/?task=search2&search_username=artbyrobot To begin: the project goal: I am working to make a series of humanoid robots. I am using a Biblical theme of naming the first 3 robots I make Adam, Eve, and Abel. The goal is for these robots to have human body inspired musculoskeletal systems, advanced AI, and that they look human and pass for human to a casual observer at least at a distance. They must be able to walk, talk, run, dance, do sports, do chores, manufacture products, and make more robots just like themselves if not even better. My aim is to build a single robot arm and head and then add sufficiently advanced AI to that arm and head to enable it to build the rest of its own body for me. This way I am delegating the work of building the majority of my first humanoid robot to that robot rather than doing that work myself - and this is to save me time. In a like manner, my goal with the AI is to code just enough AI that the AI can begin coding itself and this way I don't have to code most of the AI myself because it will self create itself. I liken this to building a seed and that seed growing into a tree because for me to code that tree would take too long for me and just creating the seed would then save me time.

What happened to small simple homes? I'm doing a few things for my grandmother at her house and I'm just amazed at how simple everything is. It's a rectangle with a living room, a kitchen and a few bedrooms. Everything is easy to work on, there's very little wasted space, etc. It has a great big backyard too. I know this is /diy/ and I apologize for asking here, but have we lost the plot with new homes? Seems like the goal now is to build such a big house that you no longer have to see each other. Were people just happier with less?

Guys I have decided to finally pull the trigger and make my own camper van. I am not influenced by the stupid vanlife social media shit, this desire predates that movement and is more closer to Bob Wells was about. I just want to be able to take trips in this during summer and winter. Because I don't know really what I'm doing, I'm starting with a cheap kind of piece of shit van. I'm most worried about properly insulating it. I'm not good at DIY so I think sprayfoam is out of question. I think closed cell foam pads would do the job and keep it relatively insulated so I can run a diesel heater during winter. Condensation handling is a worry of mine, how do I make sure I don't get mold? I figure insulation and a diesel heater will work to reduce indoors moisture, but I am looking for input from people who have messed with similar shit, be it a van or boat. Any other input is valued. The do its and don't do its.

I have recently become a stay at home dad to several kids. My wife has enjoyed being able to focus on her high powered tech job and my kids are really liking doing all sorts of adventures with me. I am not sure if I can go back to working 40-50 hr weeks once the youngest kid is in kindergarten in 4 years: schools have really short days and tons of breaks/half days etc so it’d be really hard to manage all that stuff and do a good job at my work (and that struggle is why I’ve recently become a SAHD). So I’ve been thinking about how to spend my time productively. Here’s an idea: I (plus contractors) build a large (>=5000 sqft) really nice house over the next several years. Before my youngest goes to kindergarten I can do some low intensity learning on tons of skills which I will eventually use on the house, as well as do the things with really long lead times (buying the property, architectural plans, permits etc). After kindergarten starts, I can probably spend like avg 4 hrs/day working on the house around 180 days/yr. And I could do that for years bc we already have a nice house we live in. I think the first things I would build on the property would be a small house (mother in law / ADU kind of thing) and pole barn so I could have cozy places to work and my family could hang out on the property while the big house is under construction. In my area labor is extremely expensive so things like kitchen remodels can be 100k. I think a lot of that is labor and markups, and in a big house (plus other buildings like the mother in law etc) I could learn those skills and apply them to a few kitchens. Likewise nice bathrooms are really expensive but I’ll need a bunch of them on the property so the investment in learning how to do them (mostly) myself would pay off. I could also do the learning by fixing up my existing house (3000 sqft), which might also have a good ROI when we eventually sell and move into the big new house.

I have 56 cans of monster energy. I would like to create some kind of costume for Halloween out of these cans. I'm going to cut them and flatten so they'll become flat aluminum sheets. My first idea was to make some kind of knight armour, but then i realised that cans are too thin to hold on structurally. And so I'm asking for an advice on how to make either some kind of a frame and then glue these monster sheets onto or some other way you have in mind to decorate a costume. The direction i wanna go into is historically "accurate" armour or some fantasy knight armour. There aren't many YouTube guides regarding aluminium cans decorative usage therefore I'm asking here. I have some basic instruments such as scissors, knife, wooden desk, soldering(idk why would i need that) etc at my disposal. Can buy some other if needed. TIA!

Would moving into a trailer park, maybe into a 3 bed trailer and putting up a wall around the living area to create a 4th bedroom, be a viable way to escape the insane costs of home ownership? I'm even looking at trailer parks and planning to find the right balance of trashiness of the current tenants there - trashy enough to keep the lot rents down but not so much that I'd feel unsafe living there.

I've been trying my hand at a kind of pottery dorodango(very smooth mud ball, basically) for a bit now, without any dedicated pottery tools since I don't have any and just picked this up out of nowhere. I got local clay from dirt using buckets & cloth, then molded it with my hands, burnished with a metal spoon and fired it on the coals of a charcoal grill, surrounded by aluminum foil. I've tried several times to make a full ball, and though the molding, drying and burnishing go off mostly without issue, when it comes to firing all but my most primitive piece have broken apart. I've decided to try out a disk, figuring that the reduced internal volume could help trap less moisture and reduce odds of explosion, but since this is a decently labor intensive process, I'd like to ask you guys for any tips you have to help prevent cracking. Is there some method that I can use to make it less likely to explode? Could my clay + grog use some additive? Maybe I should poke some holes into it (though it would ruin the aesthetics)? Maybe sundrying it for a week? Any tips, really.

There are lights attached to the speakers and the tweeters and speakers were all hooked up all-spaghettified to the amp's PCB, but I'm assuming I can bypass all of that malarkey and wire them up as normal speakers.

so the cocksuckers DID at one time make a XL Twin normal air mattress. Anyone got any bright ideas for how to make a good XL out of a regular twin? I guess I could get a 8"x10"x39" block of foam and maybe Velcro and upside down fitted elastic bedsheet and another one rightside up over it. And WTF does no one make XL Twin air-mattress? Its for a DIY fold up bed for my beater van. It will be along the driver's side wall. It will be barely high enough to fit 3.5 gal buckets under when folded down. Platform will hinge on door hinges with removable pins, and there will be another rail and butt-hinge halves mounted at 29" so it could serve as desk/work bench or "Captain's Bed" with lots of under bed storage. I've done that before but without the second level option, but the removable door hinge pins worked great. Could fold up the bed out of the way and haul a motorcycle, fridge, etc and the mattress and bedding would be "positive aired". For legs I used PVC pipe which would rotate flush and a more or less full length PVC pipe sat in the groove of the van floor. Haven't worked out the details but I think it will be OK to have two sets of legs, one about 13" and another at 29". I like my mini-RV and bug-out buggy to be able to be hosed out for easy 100% hygiene. Thots or suggestions? https://www.homedepot.com/pep/Leaktite-3-5-Gallon-Translucent-Gray-Paint-Bucket

You should charge 2.5×–3× direct equipment cost to cover your fuel, transport to/from the site, insurance, depreciation, permits, and your own labor. >Utility Trenching (water, sewer, electrical) >$15–$40/linear ft Machine trenching with backfill. $500 minimum is common. Rocky or deep work pushes it higher. >Foundation Excavation (slab-on-grade or crawl space) $3,000–>$12,000 Includes digging, grading, and stockpiling soil. Slab work on the low end; full basement dig $12K–$20K. >Dirt/Debris Hauling (dump truck) $150–$400/load (delivery) or >$1,400–$2,300/truckload (removal) Removal (hauling off) costs more than delivery due to dump fees at the landfill. 10–16 yd3 per load. >Site Clearing & Grubbing >$1,000–$5,000+ Depends on acreage and vegetation density. Often quoted per acre or as a flat project bid. >Small Demolition (sheds, concrete slabs, fences) $1,000–$10,000+ A slab break with loader/hammer and haul-off easily hits $3K–$8K. Small structures on the low end. >Driveway Grading / Earthwork >$2,000–$8,000 Cut/fill, compaction, and final grade. More material movement = higher end. >Septic Tank Dig / Replacement >$1,500–$4,000 Excavation, tank placement, and backfill. Add $1K–$2K if you're also hauling the old tank. >Small Crane Lift (materials, trees, equipment) >$500–$2,000/day (minimum) Small mobile crane or boom truck. Most operators charge a half-day or full-day minimum even for a quick lift. >Gravel Delivery & Spreading <$500–$1,500/load 10-yd3 load with delivery and spreading. Bulk orders (20+ yd3) drop the per-yard rate. >Swimming Pool Excavation >$5,000–$15,000 Dig, shape, and haul off. Includes form work for gunite pools. Gunite itself is separate.

recently i moved out to a bigger place and i plan to repurpose this room to make a home office of sorts, i don't like how ghetto it looks and i don't know how to approach making it look better for cheap, i bought a 4'x8' plywood board and used half of it to make this desk and i was planning to use the rest of the board to make some open shelves, the idea was to cover the raw wood with vinyl and use foam tubing as wrist rests then cover the walls and floor in a similar color to the vinyl cover, i did a test run of the foam tubing and it's surprisingly comfortable and way cheaper than any wrist rest on the market. not sure what to do with the walls and floor tho, the bricks are laterally misaligned and the imitation brick adhesive is covering raw concrete, the floor is just concrete painted red, a carpet sounds good on paper but i have a bad allergy to dust mites and this place is rural and dusty so i'm not sure if that's the way to go, i was considering adding a wall for extra privacy (the red one on the 3d model) but i could live without it, my family is telling me to not bother making this space look pretty and that it's fine as is, painting the walls at most. i prefer dark colors for furniture as i find it looks less distracting when using the pc but i'm open to color suggestions as well, this room has a lot of natural lighting during the day and it was a cold LED light bulb which is why it was painted white by the previous owner.

I hear the SOP is: 1)offer accepted contingent on Inspection after buyer puts up earnest money 2)Inspection 3)Appraisal 4)bank approves appraisal and buyer's credit, title, etc. But to crawdad out of Pending doesn't the buyer need to give Seller's agent a real reason from the Inspection to recover earnest money, otherwise WTF even is "pending" and "under contract"? Are all these agents that say they never saw any Reports on the house just legally able to lie about until just before Closing when they have to Disclose, but they figure "sunk cost fallacy" is in their favor? Don't all Buyers wave the Inspection in the Seller's agent's face hoping to re-negotiate to lower price because ANY inspection will have some stuff that SOUNDS kinda serious, even if its grasping straws about "possible future"?

I'm building a grow space to feed my 5 ounce a month cannabis habit. It's legal in my state. I'm buying a metal shed, putting a grow tent inside of that, and running a sub panel out to the shed to power lights, a heater, fans, and a dehumidifier. With all the optimization I'm planning to do, I should be able to grow 18 ounces every 3 months, busting my 15 ounce habit. Some things I'm doing to increase yield are: >adding CO2 to the environment from a pressure tank >maxxing lighting watts without burning plants >letting the next crop's clones clones root in a separate area while my current crop is still flowering >Sea Of Green grow technique which requires more plants, but smaller plants. Maximizes light absorption. The shed will be 8x10ft with a 4x8 tent inside it. 4x4 of the tent is for the plants, while the other 4x4 in the tent will have the utilities like heater, dehumidifier, CO2, etc. The rooting clones will also go in the utility area. I live in cold mountains, so the biggest challenge is keeping it warm enough year round. Gemini says that even in my climate, a regular space heater inside a tent inside a shed should be okay. I can't bring in fresh air from outside because it's too cold, but if I add CO2 to the tent I can actually increase yield. Please critique this setup.

how to turn picrel into a neat keyboard wrist rest? i only have a hacksaw, measuring tape, and rectangular sander. but no file set, router, table saw or anything like that. so far, i took measurements and made cuts for the width of my keyboard. and im half way through cutting along the length. using the hacksaw to make long cuts is pain because the fine teeth take forever. the bigger challenges with my limited setup are: 1- rounding the front edges. i thought maybe use a quarter to make marks, hacksaw the edges off , and then sand it even so it's rounded. 2- making all edges smoother. idk if my sander will be enough for the that 3- making an incline cut, so the front is half an inch shorter than the back side touching the keyboard. 4- covering my mistakes by making all sides completely flat.

If anyone wants to know, here’s how I made it: >grab a coffee filter, peppermint tea (smokes best), honey (to use as glue), a measuring tape and scissors >cut a 9 1/2 cm long and 3 cm wide rectangle with the scissors >cut some of the tea bag out for a filter, roll it into a long but small ball >put the honey on as a line on the bottom of the rectangle >put the tea bag ball on one side of the honey, and roll the rectangle as you would expect for a joint >put honey on the part of the rectangle that’s sticking out and stick it to the other side >put all your tea into the hole at the top, when it is full shake it to add more >put a tea bag piece at the top to enclose it >light the front and enjoy This video also helps explain how to make it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDq8EXebdQc Any tips on how to improve would be nice!

15-year old Samsung shitbox Leaking from the underside of the evaporator cover First search result says clogged/iced drain Drain had zero build-up of ice, poured water into it quickly and it never pooled Cleaned the brittle drain hose, nothing was in it Any ideas? Perhaps the evaporator fan needs to be checked Perhaps the foam that seals the cover has changed shape over the years and need replacing

25 years old economics major. I don't want to work at the bank. There are 6 months courses for a plumber in my country. Should I go to course and then try to find a job or is it better to immediately try to find some plumber who will employ me for minimal wage and teach me how to work. I want to work independetly one day.

I want to paint my bathroom sink to a new color. I have looked around for help. And everyone seems to be divided. One one hand, you will be told that it is a bad idea. They claim that the paint will chip off. And that the wrong chemicals as well as time will remove the paint. On the other hand we have people showing their painted bathroom sink years afterwards. Claiming that it is all fine and that the paint has stuck well. The Internet is really divided. And I cannot tell if it is a good idea or not. Anyone know?

Hi frens. I'm painting an interior bedroom, and messed up by kissing the ceiling with the paint roller a few times. I want to touch up the ceiling paint to even it out back to white, but I'm unsure of whether I should: A) Cut in on the whole ceiling all the way around B) Cut in only around the patches of wall paint on the ceiling C) Try to carefully paint over only the wall paint without cutting in normally at all. Pic related I can't re-do the whole ceiling right now. Which one makes the most sense?

hello /diy/, I am a 22 year old wageslave with no marketable skills living with their parents. one of these parents includes a 75 year old man on the brink of his ultimate demise, who last night wandered into my room, (which has no lock on the handle) naked as the day he was born, pissing all over the carpet of the 8' x 8' guest room. I harbor no ill will for the man, but when I go to replace the doorknob with one that will prevent this from happening in the future I am met with picrel. Reddit and Google give me no useful answers, as all screwless doorknob removal tutorials and threads include some sort of easy release latch along the rim under the brass cover. this doorknob has no such latch, and so im at an impass. I don't know what to do, save using a shoe rack as some sort of dementia zombie barricade for potential incidents in the future but I would really really like a less ghetto solution to my problem. I'm sorry if this isn't your bag, but I've run out of options here. at the very least, help me identify what kind of door mechanism this is so i can find a guide on how to remove it. I cant really afford to have a professional check it out with my wagie salary. thank you for your time.

Hello anons, Its my first time posting on here. Looking at getting a generator to power my house if I lose power this winter. I just need to power some freezers, a furnance fan and tv, charge phones and stuff. Nothing big. But i live at 7500 feet and will be running it on propane, both things cause power output loss I believe. Any one have recommendations or experience with generators and high altitude? Thanks.

    >hardware modders wanted: model-specific mod documentation full disclosure: i run canido.app. this is a plug, mods can do what they want it's a moderated wiki for practical, model-specific modification guides. the idea is one clean page per exact device instead of a 40 page thread where nobody agrees which revision they have. examples of the kind of thing i mean: >can the matte coating on [monitor] be removed >does [keyboard] have a hot-swap mod that doesn't brick the PCB >can [console / handheld / router / camera] be modded for X, and what breaks not telling you any of this is safe. mods void warranties, kill hardware, and sometimes hurt people. the point is to document what people actually did, with the risks labeled, not to cheerlead. what i need: >exact model AND revision/batch (hardware lottery is real) >what you did (method, tools, parts, time) >what happened (what worked, what didn't, side effects) >photos or it didn't happen >FAILURES TOO. a bricked unit is more useful than another "worked fine" with no pics you can also just suggest a topic if you don't have a mod of your own to report. submissions are reviewed before publishing. no blind trust, no "my cousin said it works." canido.app not a guide, not endorsed, do it at your own risk

what is best why to Remove&Replace rock when doing plumping etc repairs? Tear off the whole shit and replace with new full sheets? Use fancy little recipo saw to carefully remove pieces then glue and screw wood to back side to use same piece of rock to patch? Buzz down center of studs using straight edge and sheetrock dremel? cut along stud with rock-saw then add 3/4" new wood to support new rock? Other? Case by case?

I’m a sign holder, who stands on the street corner, trying to spread a message. However, my arms get tired when I hold a sign for over an hour. How can I go about this? The sign needs to be held up in the air high, or else a lot of cars won’t see the sign. Legally, it cannot be on a stick that touches the ground. I was thinking of having it stick out of a backpack. How can I realistically go about this? Or, do you guys have any other ideas about how I can get a sign above my head?

I am so fucking fed up with the quality of materials at craft stores, hardware stores, online retailers, just all over. Flat craft wood pieces used to be carvable, cutable solid wood. Not good wood at all or anything but today- laminate layers chip and flake and you can't get a square shape. Then the paint or stain soaks layers apart. WTF. Can't go to Lowes or Home Depot and find ANYTHING in any bin related to it's size or material correct. Not a single piece of flat or rod stock is marked correctly. I watched a blanket enthusiast at Michaels straight pull yarn apart by hand out of bundles. Lumber isn't even close to straight in big pieces, and FULL of knots. Blacktop is fully a stage rougher than it used to be with top and fine binder being respectively in real terms unscreened top binder and rough bonded bed. Godamnit I hate this cheapshit "technically real" materials market all over.

I am looking for your experiences with how long you have ground down brake pads and rode on them metal on rotor. And I also want to know what eventually happens if they keep being driven on "Mechanics" have told me that sometimes the pad will spit out and you can lose brake pressure. One guy said the pad will spit and then the caliper will start digging into the rotor I still have not gotten a clear answer as to what exactly happens and how long it happens. Please provide a detailed understanding and time line etc Also feel free to say something dumb like "Just do your brakes idiot" to prove to us all what a child and parasite to society you are

Hello people, so I am restoring an old and cheap vise here overseas and I removed the screws that hold the jaws into place. When they were in I thought that those were ISO M6 screws but seems to be a 1/4" inch screws. One of them got damaged after I took it out; not the hole, just the screw, so I am looking for replacements but of course here are really hard to find so I'm probably better off Aliexpress or something. BUT I need to know what to take, obviously. Here's the screw with a caliper set at 1/2" distance to measure threads. Other measurements I took are: fits a 3/16 allen wrench, caliper diameter is 6,35mm or 1/4" on the other scale, lenght 3/4". The measurement I don't know is the thread, pic related there are 11 pitches in half a inch. UNC? Thanks

WTF is wrong with it? Things I like: 'hood looks nice enough, no trash or junk cars or trailers showing, with big houses and next close similar size for safe are 2X per sq foot. T1-11 siding. Not the best, but something I've done professionally. 1977: post asbestos and pre-fake board. Close enough to "city" and even a University of sorts, but not too close, but public sewer (I'm afraid of septic, I use garbage disposal and dump a lot of grease). Roomy at 3500+ and 1970s Brady Bunch vibe. Sure its a LOT of glass and probably 1 pane, but I've had great luck with that plastic sheet stuff to make 3 pane. Lots of trees. Don't like: Only 1 car garage and so hilly it would be tough to build a new XL 2-3 anywhere except maybe to the right in front of the house sorta where the swing set is. Neutral: will probably need new roof in new future, but pitch is shallow and simple enough for DIY, even for me. Has frontage to 2 lane road on back end, but its uphill with no place for anyone to park. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1-Haynie-Rd-Huntington-WV-25704/466264730_zpid/
