What is the best. Who has experience?
Most important tips for buying etc.

I have tons of wood and time on my hands and lumber costs a bunch so...
Is it worth it to jump from models that cost $5,000 up to a $10,000 model?

arent there a bunch of used ones for sale? during the kungflu so many boomers decided they needed one of these toys that woodmizer got backed up 3 yrs behind so 50 fly by night companies started making them. plus chinkshit and homemade. then 98% of the guys figured out it was lame and hard work then and cost a fortune every time they hit a nail in that piece of trunk from a yard in town. so their mills sit unused and for sale for less than half of new with no takers
go look at various options and think for yourself

Huh. I see a bunch of these and wood splitters in my area on Craig's List. Now I know why.

Don't buy a sawmill expecting to make a ton of money. It is a bitch sawing good lumber. You need an edger and a plainer, but If you want to make your own wood for building it's a good idea. If you can wait for things to dry T- Hardwood Sawyer

Wilson Forest Lands has youtube videos on his experience with these.

There is also Ants Pants who has made his own bandsaw mill, gonna give a tdlr on advice from him which is power wash your logs.

Manual ones suck ass to push and pull all day and the fancy automatic ones are expensive as hell, plus, turning green logs by hands sucks turbo ass.

I have an assload of cottonwood trees. Worth sawing into beams or no?

    >cottonwood
cut fullsize 3x8 or bigger makes primo trailer decking. itll drink up a shitload of used oil for sealer and not get too slick

i saw a guy build a rig where he just mounts his chainsaw to it and it gets the job done for cheap, might be worth looking into if you're just a home gamer.

Those are called Alaskan mills or chainsaw mills. It's worth it to get milling chains I hear from the SurvivingRingworm yt channel.

How long for wood to dry on the SHORTEST timeline.
I got dry covered space, but it will have to air dry out.
Do I need to make this lumber in the fall and build in the spring? Or not long enough?

    >>3008102
Kerf loss is a problem here. Unless you're cutting 4x4 or more.

    >How long for wood to dry on the SHORTEST timeline.
For air drying, 1 year per inch of thickness.

Less if you're in the desert or working with soft woods

    >What is the best.
I dont know but I have a norwood lm30 and it works
    >Who has experience?
I've recently transitioned from dogshit uneven slabs to barely usable boards.
But I guess precision dont matter that much with traditional exterior walls that Im making
    >Is it worth it to jump from models that cost $5,000 up to a $10,000 model?
Mine cost $5000 used, found it on marketplace.
You probably dont need to spend more than 7k but I guess it depends on the availability in your area.
Dont listen to fags who say manual push sucks, put your sawbed at a slight downward incline and lube the wheels properly its not an issue.
But moving big logs by yourself sucks ass that can be said for sure.

seems like should be easy to DIY with a long DIY straight edge from snapping a line on some DIY scabbed together 20' or WTF 2x lumber, then run a bandsaw or 10" Bigfoot against that.

    maybe a 20+ Metal Stud

    whatcha building?
most framing at least in CA is done with fresh sopping wet wood. #2 Doug Fir is standard default.

Find out WTF wood you got and it should have a fairly standard shrink.

Shrinks mostly across the grain, not with the grain.

Another thing is wood can warp when drying, so consider stacking with spacers like some 1/8" mansonite strips to form a vented matrix but also tie ends and middle to keep it all one straight unit.
Not a prob to build with wet wood because it will be secured into position before it starts to dry and warp.
Maybe "bag it" and run a de-humid box.

    >for cheap
going through thick logs eats so much gas it is cheaper to hire somebody with a mobile grid powered sawmill.
not even talking about the hours wasted

Eh, sounds like a good time. What else would I be doing? Shitposting on 4chan?

its grueling and misserable work akshualy
for hours on end you force the saw into a sideways cut, get raped by the vibrations and huff two stroke fumes

You don't have to keep selling it to me.

That's the best kind of work, especially where you can forget about everything else in life while doing it. Bonus points for loud noises, so eventually I can have some eternal peace and quiet...
