I am looking for a book that instructs on basic survival skills. Not some loons manifesto, but just bare bones survival skills.
    Do you have any recommendations?

I have Canterbury's book, what is another good one for more advanced stuff. Things to build for comfy long term stays or planned repeat visits to a site.

Can you explain more about what you're looking for in a survival manual/book?

How barebones, how short, how much information, just the skills or would you also consider knowing what gear to bring a skill too? What does your ideal survival book look like?

The USAF Handbook 64-4 (otherwise known as the SERE handbook). The USAF survival school is the world's premiere survival school. It's very barebones, but is what air force survival instructors, pilots, aircrew, special operations airmen, and astronauts study to prepare for going down in enemy or remote territory. I am a BWCAW guide, and was lucky enough to train with a consultant for the RCAF (Canadian air force), who introduced me to a lot of SERE Specialists (USAF survival instructors) that go their start in my guiding service. One guy, goes online by IA Woodsman, and he has a literal bible of USAF quality SERE skill demonstrations on youtube.

The USAF SERE Cadre also recommend the following books for those interested in survival skills:
    >Be an Expert with Map & Compass, Bjorn Kjellstrom
    >Army Manual FM 21-26 (Land Nav)
    >The Basic Essentials of Map & Compass, Cliff Jacobson (great American canoeist whose circles I've also run in)
    >A Comprehensive Guide to Land Navigation on GPS, Noel Hotchkiss
    >GPS Made Easy, Lawrence Letham
    >The SAS Survival Handbook, John Wiseman
    >Staying Alive in the Arctic, Frank Heyl
    >How to Stay Alive in the Woods, Bradford Angier
    >Fieldbook, Boy Scouts of America
    >Tom Brown's Field Guides
    >High Angle Rescue Techniques, Tom Vines
    >River Rescue, Les Bechdel
John Wiseman and Tom Brown are classics, and more consumer speed survival resources.
