I'd say from the moss on the deciduous trees and the drystone wall that this is West Britain (any where from Exmoor up to the Scottish Borders) - rainy cloud forest!

I'm planning on going to Orkney for a few days in September. Has anyone been? I'll stay in a hostel for a few nights in Kirkwall and renting a bike.

Come then mate, give me some tips or summat. I'm going to ride to Skara Brae via the Ring of Brodgar and the lochs, then to Orkney brewery for a tour. The day after I think I'm going to cycle to the east of mainland to the beaches. Last day I'm knocking about Kirkwall.

How do you guys cook if you go somewhere with a high fire risk warning at this time of year like Dartmoor? Or do you just go without hot food/drinks/etc?

Off to the Lake District in September, staying in Ambleside for a few days and hoping to do some day hikes. I'll be in a group of four and the only capable hiker amongst them. Anyone got any decent enough walks around there they'd recommend for beginners?

How crap are they? They won't need to be mountaineers for some of the easier climbs but they will need to be generally fit. The Lakes can get very rainy so make sure they've got proper waterproofs and boots if you go up anything big.
You can hike along the top of the Wastwater screes, it's not that high and very gentle once you're up, with an excellent view of the lake. Otherwise, the easiest and safest thing for beginners is to visit some of the waterfalls around. But so long as they aren't overweight and have sensible clothing, you can definitely go climb some of the hills.

Do you carry a GPS? Not sure it's even worth getting one in the UK. I can read a map and use a compass.
    >>
    >>2877114
Defo not worth in UK unless deep deep in lakes or peaks/moors

    >>2876367
Thanks for the advice. It turns out one of them is apparently pretty fit and keen, I figured doing the Fairfield Horseshoe would be good as a day hike and as it starts and ends in Ambleside it makes the logistics of it easier. I'm mainly going with them because there's a good Thai restaurant. I'll do one of the easier ones with the rest of the group.

    >>2880584
Seconding these. Personally I don't like their modern ones that look more like leggings, but their classic ones are good solid trousers. I'd probably be fine wearing them in winter with long johns underneath

new style royal navy goretex jackets are a bargain.
it's literally a 3-layer goretex mountaineering jacket. even has pit zips, helmet compatible hood, map pockets etc
you can get them for about £70 in good nic on ebay.
the new style royal navy softy is decent aswell. It's a Carinthia LIG 4.0, which if you were to buy direct from carinthia would cost £350. Grade 1 RN ones on ebay are about £60.

We were actually staying at a cottage one street over. I wish we could have gone in as it seems exactly my sort of pub but the group I went with drink even less than I do.

    >>2879666
Ended up doing the route to Rydal Cave on one day, then the Fairfield Horseshoe on the second day. One of the group went up with jeans and timberlands on, I warned him it'd be uncomfortable. His wife had to persuade him to take a bag with food and drink in, too. With how good Ambleside is for outdoors stuff I suggested getting some proper boots at least but he wanted to try his own.

About 10k in he was saying his knees were hurting, and then for the descent we were moving almost at a crawl. I think he was accidentally walking in a weird way to account for his boots and it made him jar his legs on the route. We ended up being up there for 6hrs because I had to go so slow with him on the way down. I didn't mind, we had nothing else on that day and I think it's a lesson learned for him. I did get some sympathetic looks from other people up on the hill.

Went to Orkney. Fuck me it's windy, but I was pleasantly surprised with the lack of rain for a week in Scotland in late summer. Nice place, if a little saturated by massive cruise ships and loads of yanks/chinese.

I stupidly selected the acoustic bike at the hire shop. It was one of those where the saddle is higher up than the handle bars, which means you can't really relax as you're constantly pushing on the handlebars. I did 20 miles the first day, with a 75m climb which came at the end and subsequently fucked me over. I just got the bus the next day.

Last one of dump. The neolithic sites are amazing. To think that they're just a couple of hundred of years after the invention of writing... Funny hearing about the Vikings writing rude messages on them and now they're seen as historic cultural attractions. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

I've been thinking about doing an island hop on my motorbike, going from Midlands to IOM, then on to Arran, Jura, Islay, Oban, Mull, Skye, Uists, Harris and Lewis.

I'd like to hit Orkneys and Shetlands too, which might be tough to fit in 2 weeks. I guess I could see how I feel once I get back to Ullapool from Lewis. I've done NC500 twice now, second time didn't seem as good perhaps because of the weather, was 50/50 wet/dry and the wind never stopped.

Would say it's all worth seeing?

Thanks Anon!. My nana's old EOS-1 which is the same age as me (35). I took two rolls of Fujifilm 400, one of Fuji Reala 320 and Kodak Vision3 250D. I can't really tell the difference...

It is quite a boring place, and it's quite flat so there's not much to see? When I was cycling I did think to myself it would be great to zip around on a little 90cc bike though.
