    a few questions,

My bike has a Shimano Nexus 4 speed
I was consdering to replace it for a Nexus 8

Is there anything I should look out for to know if it would work with my bike? Certain sizes, using specific cables? Brake? Can you use the Di2 version for normal bikes? Spokes?

One other thing I was wondering: Do speeds feel the same (in the sense of pedaling speed and weight) across the same speed for both? (lets say you use the 3rd speed on both the Nexus 4 and Nexus 8, would they feel the same?)
    >>
    >>2080767
    *Shimano Nexus 4 Speeds
    >>
    >>2080767
gear-calculator.com doesn't have nexus 4 for some reason, but between 8 and 5 you can see there's more overall range, steps, and much lower low gears with 8. this is for the default chainring and cog. you can put in what you actually have, a given cadence and it'll show you kph or mph, and what wheel size you have and you can see the actual gear-inches. but screenshot tells you your question basically.
you don't just get to drop in the new one (I don't think), they're a whole hub, so you have to take the spokes off, take out the 4, then lace the spokes into the 8 and rim, then tension and true. if the spoke flange is a different size than the 4, then you need new spokes that fit. this is time consuming for you and expensive for a shop. there's a possibility that a whole new wheel built with an 8 would be cheaper. unless nexus hubs have the ability to trade out internal parts, but I've never heard of that.
    >>
    >>2080767
another thing you can do with the 4 is change the gears on your drivetrain to tune your strength/terrain needs. like, if the 4 is too easy to pedal in the high gear and you want a harder gear for more speed, you'd get either more teeth (bigger) on the crank, or less (smaller) on the wheel. or if the hills are killing you and you want lower, easier gears, get less teeth on the crank or more on the wheel.
but the 8 will have more overall range and the difference in feel between the changes will be less.

Is it possible to uplift a walmart/target BSO into a decent bike?
    >>
    >>2080771
    >>2080773
okay, I see that there are wheels you can buy with it but what about frame distance and fitting? Also my bike uses a rollerbrake at the back
    >>
Can you replace a rimbrake on the front wheel for a rollerbrake?
    >>
    >>2080767
    >Is there anything I should look out for to know if it would work with my bike?
Check your OLD / frame spacing and if it's feasible to change it first. They vary wildly. I have forever since it came out been in love with the SG-C3001-7 but the 127 mm OLD on some of them is really... odd.
    >>2080767
    >One other thing I was wondering: Do speeds feel the same (in the sense of pedaling speed and weight) across the same speed for both?
You mean wether a speed, going by it's numerical name, is the same ratio as it would be on another nexus IGH? Obviously not, just think about it. It would either imply 3 speeds were completely useless or 8 speeds were extremely overgeared. In reality IGHs have always suffered most from not offering too big of a total range. On a 3 speed the difference in ratio between 2 speeds is alot more. Ultimately, since you're fiddling with it anyways, you're not bound to keep the primary ratio (chainwheel and cog) you currently have either so you can do whatever you want.
    Tip:
Shimano moved away from stating maximum input torque and instead states a minimum primary ratio for safe operation. Moronic but here we are.
Protip: The recommendation can be safely exceeded by far. Especially if you're not obese and especially if you keep in mind what you have done and don't force it up the steepest hills.
Expert tip: First gear usually is the strongest so if you're forcing it don't be stupid and do it in 2nd.
    >>
    >>2080778
    >Can you replace a rimbrake on the front wheel for a rollerbrake?
Generally not. What do you think will take up the reaction force from braking? If your fork was made for rim brake it is unlikely to accept a roller brake.
Of course the exception is that you can almost always create or recreate what has been manufactured before. Just depends on how much time, effort or money you want to sink into it. But no plug and play. Don't rely on hoseclamps or similar for brakes.
    >>
    >>2080782
    >Check your OLD / frame spacing and if it's feasible to change it first
    how?
    >>
    >>2080782
OLD usually only changes with the number of cogs/cassette. the new and old hubs only have one cog. and they're both nexus models. the OLD should be the same, right?
as long as the wheel size is the same (probably 700c but he doesn't say) then as long as the rim width is similar (he doesn't put a MTB width to replace a road width ) then the frame clearance won't be affected.
    >>
    >>2080786
my wheels are 622 mm, 28 inch tires
if I am not mistaken the small back gear has 19 tooths and the crank one has 39 or 41, I dont know if I have a cassette

    >>
    >>2080776
yes but retarded dental hygenists (not even real dentists!!) will parrot fuddlore about you about how the very threads on each bolt will be weird. these days they just throw entry level shimano stuff on them, so any other shimano stuff will fit. the bars are 7/8" or closest metric equivalent, the brakes are either rims with bigass cutouts and the usual M6 bolts on any decent shoe will fit (or it's discs with the usual hex arrangement of bolts) and so on
    >>
    >>2080776
No. It is literally impossible to put new parts on a big box store bike. All bikes are designed by an Engineer and once you start messing with their vision, all bets are off and performance will never be the same. It's like mixing Shimano and SRAM. You just don't do it. The people who designed all these parts, even when they're chink BSOs, are smarter than you. Do not interfere with their vision.

My bike is in terrible shape and has both an electric kit and a gas engine on it, either of which may fail at any time. This is not a meme about lithium batteries. I have suffered critical failures on the road severe enough that I skidded so hard that the wheel ground down to the tube before.

Is there some kind of sign I can put on my bike that says "THIS SHIT WILL FAIL WITHOUT WARNING AND QUICKLY; PLEASE GIVE ME SPACE OR YOU MIGHT RUN ME OVER AND POP YOUR OWN TIRES AND SHRED YOUR UNDERCARRIAGE ON MY DEBRIS" like how logging or gravel trucks have standard signs about loads being technically secure but stuff being still possible to come off

My bicycle, if you can call it that, is broken. It is made up of bicycle parts. These weren't forged at home. It's all entry level shimano shit, and a spattering of american "patent pending" one-off levers. There is no reason my vehicle can't be serviced by an average bike mechanic. I know for a fact that I am a well below average bike mechanic, and I service most of it myself. It annoys me that my pile of scrap is somehow unserviceable by the average shop, not for it being "uneconomic" but because apparently it can't be understood.

I'm tired of existing in some weird inbetween space. It's all bike parts and I pedal it sometimes, so I have need of bike parts. The engine parts are hub motors, but apparently no serious enthusiast cares about that. There's a gas engine involved too, but when I have simple mechanical problems, well, it's not a fucking harley so no one can offer any kind of help. I have to just take everything apart and wiggle it around to see what engages what and try to deal with it. It's annoying.

I, as a bad person, deserve to be alone. But I as an owner of a series of standardized machinery am annoyed that it's apparently not so standardized. Every time I have a problem that's not emotional, suddenly there's no support, no one has ever seen this before, despite it all relating to a long series of stuff made by other people, for other people, according to standards set by other people, for other people. suddenly all these other people evaporate and never existed. every time anything goes wrong in my personal life, I have to chase down data sheets made by liars, if they were written at all. And when I have to resort to meters and calipers, suddenly I'm the asshole for doing that instead of referring to data sheets that don't exist.

Ozark trails don't even fit into the BSO category apart from the forks they come with and suntour even offers an exchange program on those forks so you can get a real air fork for a discount. They all come with low end but real serviceable components. Unless we're using BSO just to describe any low end bike, in which case the term has lost all meaning.

on top of that they're a low TPI casing with tacky compound for sticking to rock gardens. I would put good money on you being unable to even overcome rolling resistance because it will likely to around 80 watts.

    >wheel bearing race is gritty
I will probably order a new race and already bought an entire NOS hub so don't worry, but is it doable to sand and polish the bad surface off the race + replace bearings to get a few more seasons out of a hub? like, attaching it to a drill and giving it some sandpaper.

hub in question is just some shimano RSX hub so it's not really even worth the new bearing race from wheelsmfg but this is mostly just an experiment in bike maintenance and wheel building for myself

I need a tire for technical trails. yes its an CX bike. I've been riding it on mtb trails for over a year and sometimes I take it on long, flat crushed gravel rides, and asphalt. thats probably what wore my tires down.
the MTB trails around me have exposed roots, loose rock, hardpack soil and a few places with boulders and pavers.
    >continental race kings/mountain king

    >>
    >>2081016
    >how big can I go?

there's no simple answer. it depends on frame, rims, and a dozen different things about the tire. to make an educated guess you might be able to run 2.4 slicks but probably nothing larger than 2.35 with knobs. this is contingent however. if you want something that just works get 2.25 fast tracks or bontrager XR2s

Enduro is a specific style of downhill racing that requires you to pedal back up the hill and do several laps. Enduro bikes tend to have less travel and be more breakable than downhill bikes. downhill is downhill - you take a 10"+ full suspension bike up a chairlift and go down as fast as possible. gravity is more along the lines of redbull rampage - judged downhill events where your main goal is to be alive at the end of the day.

    >>
    >>2081016
    >are these meant to be staggered
You generally have more clearance in your fork than in your chainstays. You won't have issues. Are they ment for it? Idk, but mixing tires is common for mtb. You get a lower rolling resistance rear which is where most of your rolling resistance is and you get something with more traction in the front for turns.
    >>
    >>2081025
    >or to get a fucking grip and recognize that the problem is you not the bike
whenever I work on my shit once it's done it stays fixed for far longer than it ever lasted new

took apart a wheel entirely today and one of the bearings was literally missing. it had a cup but no cone hidden away under the freewheel and like five bearings were already missing for hte obvious reason that the wheel was not even done when they shipped it out (no they did not fall out during disassembly i know you're going to say it FUCK YOU)

setting fire to kidnapped japanese buddhist monks in front of Shimano HQ it is then (i have and never will use SRAM)

modern bikes are designed in dumb ways that preclude any sort of service when they inevitably fail from routine events that any other sort of machine would take in stride

even how a freewheel attaches is an affront to all machine elements involved. who the fuck threads on a part that is under torque along that axis. name one other place that happens that isn't a slumlord attaching a faucet handle (and even then the cheap ones use vertical splines now). hmm yes let me thread on my brake rotor. it seems like a good idea to use a fabric and rubber belt for drive on a system that moves laterally. i want to have to remove my cranks to access the adjustment screws on adjust my front derailleur. give me a pneumatic insert to overcome the limitations of tubeless tires. mechanisms dreamed up by the utterly deranged

tire compounds and construction got better. rims, hubs, and spokes got WAY better. modern drivetrains allow for much wider gear ranges.
as a combination of these and other technical factors, the advantages of 26" no longer matter for most applications. a 29" wheel of recent manufacture makes a 26" wheel of just 15 years aggo look like a wet noodle even before you consider all of the improvements in geometry all over every modern bike.

you can still find 26" in use on fat tire bikes but that is only because a 4"+ tire on 26" has similar diameter to a conventional tire on 650b or 700c. mind you we're not talking about floppy noodle single-walled 17-inner 26" rims here, those aren't used on anything and never will be again.

any other type of shop, a shop-hour costs $200 minimum. (some) bike shops have to just cope with normie expectations but I don't trust important service to that sort of shop unless I have no choice whatsoever.
    >>
    >>2081070
    devil's advocate, here:
I have rim brakes, the broken spoke is on the non-drive side, my tire has a tube and no sealant, and the other spokes are tight.
$10 is obviously not realistic, but how does your quote differ, if at all ?
I do all my own repairs, but I'm just curious, especially since I don't put memes on my bike.
    >>
    >>2081074

My shop charges $30 for a wheel true, so that plus whatever the spoke and nipple cost (usually like $2-3). NDS is kind of irrelevant because usually you still have to remove the cassette to get the spoke in, but I'll just assume it's a front wheel.
I still probably wouldn't do it for you same day during peak season unless I had a part timer I could pass it off to. But that's more because I'm the only full time wrench at my shop.

Yes and no. Despite everyone repeating the same
    >dA pArTz nOt StAnDaRd
They are actually much easier to work on and change out parts compared to name brand bikes. All these modern pacific cycke bikes are the same standard:
    >every bike uses a BB68 73mm MTB type bottom bracket
    >every bike is 140mm disk brake with 74mm MTB post mount brakes
    >if it has a cassette it'll be Shimano HG standard
    >if not a cassete then a freewheel compatible with Shimano megarange 8 speed
    >they all use the same hub spacing
    >all most all of them are 29ers
    >seat tube will be 27.2 or the next common standard
You can just buy one of these things and put amazon parts in jt without even knowing anything about bikes and they will just bolt on. You just buy brakes and they'll work because the top results are MTB post mount disk brakes which all the BSOs use. You can just buy a exterior bearing BB and crankset and it will fit because all the results are for BB68 73mm.
    >t. Made 3 BSOs into decent bikes.
Is it worth it? If you like upgrading bikes and want quantity over quality of cheap bikes to try different types of bikes, then yes. If you know what you want or can be told what you want and go along with what you are told then no, just buy a name brand bike. To fully upgrade one mean to take it down to the frame and replace all the parts with china parts and still spend $900+ when you are done. Unless you like what you have made then its not worth it. Instead you buy one like the Ozark Trails and upgrade it a little with bang for your buck parts and go ride the shit out of it then upgrade to a real bike and use the knowledge and experience you have from riding the BSO to guide you into your next purchase.

is it completely flat where you are?
are you ok with maxing out at 5mph?
    go for it.
for the same money , you can buy a bike with gearing for hills and going 20-30mph on the flat, and will weigh half as much .
although you'll probably need to buy fenders -- which are great for commuting -- and any racks and baskets you may want aftermarket

    >>
    >>2081254
more teeth on the crank will give more top speed but might hurt acceleration depending on the rest of the bike, you don't get both from one. if you go with a n8 don't touch anything else at first and see how it feels

    >>2080786

    >>2081259
okay but as I said, it I were to change the back gear from 19 teeth to a 22 teeth too?
    >>
    >>2081269
you are allowed to change the gears however you like. you'll have to resize the chain, so if the ratio is overall bigger you'll need a new chain because the old length won't fit. on the crank the chainring can't be smaller than the crank's bolt circle diameter (BCD) unless you are willing to get a crank with a smaller bcd.
just put the 8 on and ride around and see if you need more low end, or more high end before you fuck with the gears. you may not need either.

I saw this for $200 and it gave me the itch for a commuter bike. Is this anywhere near reasonable, and what could I expect to put into it?
I love the look, but I'm quite naive and would appreciate any pointers.
    >>
    >>2081277
I'd commute the shit out of it. but it wouldn't fit me. that frame looks like a small to medium sized adult frame.
it comes with fenders and rack already which are more expensive than you'd expect, and fenders can be a hassle to get installed.
    >>
    >>2081278
The listing says 20". Looking at charts online it would probably be short for me at 5'10"
I take it "road" bikes should typically be taller?

Thanks for point that out, anon.
    >>
    >>2081280
not sure. it could be ok? you'd have to straddle it in person and extend the seat post to your leg extension and see how it rides.
my bike frames are undersized because I'm tall enough that I probably need custom. I've got 7 inches of seatpost and maxed out quill stems. it's alright, but it looks pretty goofy. the real dealbreaker is a frame too large, but obviously the frame in your picture is definitely too small for an over-6ft person, a long seatpost isn't going to fix that.
it used to be a thing that pros would size down their frames, so it's definitely "a thing" although in my case I'm sizing down a little more than that out of necessity. the bike in your pic has a modern stem so the stem height is limited to the steerer tube, although you could cheaply and easily get a riser stem.
I'd test ride it unless you just want to wait for another listing. if it doesn't feel right, don't be afraid to walk away.
    >>
    >>2081277
looks neat, make sure the paint is flawless where the stays meet the lugs and fork ends.
the pannier rack is being held onto the frame by hopes and dreams. it will hold a coat but not a backpack.
    >>2081280
idk, compact / mtb geometry has about an inch more stand over height.
so the frame is maybe 8 to 5.46 cm too short for you.
hard to tell as frames made after 1990 tend to be less square. (no idea lol I’m 5.7 and old 54 cm frame seems to fit)
the bars may be a little low and close to your knees, nothing a long seat post and stem cant jank away from.

How long does it typically take for saddle soreness to stop being a thing?

I haven't ridden bikes in almost a decade but I used to ride fairly often. I honestly cannot remember having to deal with such extreme ass pain like I have now. if you're in decent physical shape otherwise, a couple of weeks to a month. if you're not, never.

comfort on the bike comes down to power, core strength, flexibility, and overall conditioning. comfort begins around 1.8 watts/kg presuming you can bend over and touch your toes and your bike fit is 98% perfect

I did my 10km daily work commute on an ebike made from a walmart BSO. literally picrel and it only died due to what i assume was water ingress. 26x1.5-2.0 inch tires (depending on what was fitted that week based on running over discarded hubcaps and mufflers)

it eventually died for what i assume is water ingress but i still have all of it and the non e parts of the bike are still solid. i do own studded winter tires but never equipped them. the OEM shitty "dirt" tires were fine all winter. i got some princess auto "urban" tires i put on a different moped and those have been fine. but even in fall rains, i find my 700c "road" tires don't exactly inspire confidence and do slip on dust, but seem fine for wet. even on the mtb on ice shit was wack as fuck and i had to go real slow because it turns out ice is slippery and traction loss on a two wheeled vehicle is bad, and in snow my low-end torque of being a fat nigga was more important than the motor because canadian snow is wet and will laugh at all attempts to power through it

and on fenders, they are mandatory, but not worht shopping around for. they always attach at only a few points and you can bang them with a mallet to make the angles right for getting them close enough to actually work. but also just get some snow pants nigga. i have a nice pair of contractor over-pants and they not only keep crud off me but are comfy and warm too. even if you have a change of clothes at work it's good for morale to show up only damp but warm instead of soaked and cold

oh. no. i've considered it but it seems unergonomic. i just wear gloves. even if they are beautiful to actually use, i get off my bike sometimes and would prefer to just have gloves, and then having covers AND gloves would require either my hands get hot whilst riding, or my hands get cold in the transition period from riding to not riding.

    >The overlocknut distance for the Shimano Nexus 8-speed hub is typically 132 mm, but it can be adjusted to fit narrower frames by modifying certain components
    >The Shimano Nexus 4-speed hub has an overlocknut spacing of approximately 127 to 135 mm

this is just quick ddg ai answers, but it looks like you can change the 8 to get the same OLD as the 4 and they're probably the same anyway.
if your frame is steel a few mm does not matter, you can just tighten it down if smaller or it'll give if you pull it apart a few mm. and, a steel frame can be "cold set" to permanently change it multiple mm to a completely different OLD.

I need a new chain for my bike, it came with a KMC Z7 7speed chain.
I am looking at Amazon and I see a 114 and 116 link Z7 chain. how do I know which one I need besides counting my exiting links?
should I stick with KMC or go with another brand? i dont want to spend more than $20 on this.
    >>
    >>2081461
you need a chain tool to size your chain to the gears on your particular drivetrain. the chains come bigger than necessary, then you remove the extra. so may as well go 116. I ride KMC and like them. but apparently they are widely bootlegged, which may or may not even matter, but I figure that the KMC store on Amazon is likely to be legit.

you gotta figure out what they mean by "certain components"

if you can get it within 1 or 2 mm, I can't imagine it should make a difference even on aluminum but I don't really know

How do I tell if the chain is bad?
This was a garage find bike.
The chain was rusty. I removed it. Soaked it in a rest remover, brushed it clean, soaked ran in through a sonic wash, installed and lubed it.
    It feels a lot better.

But the chain itself, how can I tell if it's worn out?
None of the links felt loose or worn. Lots of wobble. Gritty before cleaning.
Idk what other signs to look for
    >>
    >>2081523
there's a tool for measuring stretch, or you can measure it but I didn't get good results that way compared to the tool, possibly I'm retarded.
a worn chain will do pic related, but how much is too much or just if it can do it at all I don't know. you pull against the big ring. pic related is supposed to be fully blown

Are there any other brands that do the raw steel look? I'm too much of a bitch to commute on a fixie.
    >>
    >>2081532
why not just buy whatever steel bike you want and strip the paint and then clearcoat/linseed oil it.
iunno what Vendetta uses but usually people warn against raw steel because clearcoat is porous and the air will eventually get under and rust, but surely there's some way to do it. linseed oil works but not sure how much better or worse, and I think you have to reapply sometimes.
point being, I'm not convinced Vendetta has solved the issue; if they just cleared it, then it's just a susceptible to rust as one you or I would make

    Could someone help me here?
My crankset is making this constant triple *click* noise whenever I peddle, I just got it back from the shop and have no idea why it could be making that noise. Anyone got any tips?

My crankshaft is a Prowheel TA-CQ68
    >>
    >>2082151
could be the seat creaking as your weight shifts during pedaling. could be the pedals, bad bearings etc.
grab your crank, lift the rear wheel up and hand crank it. do both crankarms. listen for the noise and see if you can tell if it's pedals or the internal link of the crank through the frame where the bearings are (the "bottom bracket".) also grab the arms and try to wiggle them perpendicular to the frame. if they wiggle, something's loose. then do the pedals.
it could be something stupid, like the plastic on your shoelaces hitting the bike as you pedal. I recently had a mystery noise when I pedaled that I could *not* figure out. turns out the new shorts I bought, the pocket was placed differently and my phone was hitting the seatstay every revolution.
    >>
    >>2082152
    Thank you for the help.
it seems to be coming from the drive train side of the bike. There aren't any wiggle nor it's something else like you have mentioned with shoelaces and such. Should I sent it back to the shop?
Figured since it's a rather small noise I could just keep riding it no worries, I would like to take it apart but I don't have any sort of tool for the job

    >>
    >>2082158

    >>
    >>2082159
What does it mean a chain link being stiff? I gave it a quick google search and will check it, give me a second. But if I'm understanding it right my chain should have a link that is a little bit torqued up from the rest, correct?
    >>2082160
They did disassemble the bottom bracket, freehub, hubs, headset to inspect and lube it up. among other things like align breaks, bled the breaks.
    >>
    >>2082163
the chain links pivot on the rivets . during installation, the rivet gets pressed in against the plates and mashes them all together and they won't move. the rivet usually needs to be poked back slightly the other direction to loosen up and get the link to pivot freely. there could be other reasons for a stiff link but just go through each link with your fingers, it'll be obvious if that's it. but that's just a guess as to the noise. maybe look at the derailleur pulleys? it's impossible to diagnose over the internet.

I mean, most of the stuff the shop worked on could be the cause. if you can get back there, see if a mechanic will go on a ride-along so he can hear the sound.
