    Racist!
    >>
Not technically a mixed, but the use of a passenger car at the rear of a weed spraying train will suffice, I'm sure of it.

That’s such a great photo. A classic Maine two footer Forney, boxcar, a derailed upside down pulpwood car, what I think is a snow flanger (but no sign of snow) and then a mixed train caboose. I’ve been to the WW & F museum where they have a lot of Sandy River and other Maine two foot stuff running.

Were mixed trains cheaper back in the day since they ran slower services or was pricing more or less the same?

I'd be interesting if car carriers eventually were modified to have independent locomotion units powered by the EV batteries in the cars they carry.

Strasburg in Pennsylvania runs revenue freight with steam on excursion days and usually attaches a coach or two. These are unscheduled trips, boarding fees paid in exact change to the conductor. Duration varies depending on how many cars are picked up and dropped off.

The Dildo at Strasburg pulled some revenue freight.

what "freight" are they carrying? air?
    >>
    >>2082783
Depends. Strasburg had been a purely tourist railroad since rhe 1960's, but in 2013 local businesses approached the Strasburg board about hauling revenue freight. After looking at the possible profits, they decided to go ahead. There was a bit of controversy since this meant a 100 year old wooden bridge would be replaced with a modern concrete viaduct to hand modern 100 ton freight cars, and the railroad had to build freight offloading facilities, including a liquid handling facility to off load tank cars. Revenue freight operations began in 2014.

I knew about those operations, but the photos you had posted before showed old rolling stock that they wouldn’t dare use for revenue freight

What's the point of hooking up the caboose to the middle of the train? Or even putting it on at all for that matter since there's already crew accommodation in the form of spare seats in the coaches?

Most pictures I see of mixed trains in their heyday usually dispensed with brake vans and cabooses altogether unless the coaches in question were coupled up directly behind the locomotive, in which case it seems like they were retained for braking power.

It's a locomotive after all. Normally part of a passenger train.
