Yeah, I've always hated these fucking people, you included of course. But actually the thread has become less annoying than it was last year, thanks to some of these fuckers going away. The result of some of these devices being "solved"

    GBA? Solved.
    Genesis? Solved.
    GBC? Solved.
    PS1? 64? Dreamcast? SNES? PS2? Solved.
DS? RG DS+ is about 90% solved. Needs another gb of RAM.
3DS. Solved except for the 3D.
Saturn? Not solved. Playable on steamdeck tier devices, but not with the ideal controls. We need an Arc plus.

It still needs a few fixes besides the RAM.
    >A slightly better chip because the amount of ridiculous tricks the BananaOS guy has to pull out of a hat just to get MelonDS working on the thing is ridiculous and he shouldn't need to do what he does.
    >It needs the size culled by a decent amount because both the RG DS and RG DS+ are so obscenely huge it's insane. It's like holding a small tablet.
    >Better L and R buttons with softer pushes and easier depression because right now they're very difficult to use in shooter games for example and only really work at all on non-shooter games. Not at all like a real DS and playing those games how you would a DS is cramp city.
    >Included stylus should be with the felt tip or the disc tip, not the rubber one. Rubber one is unusable.

    >3DS. Solved except for the 3D.
We have to see how the DDS turns out because right now it seems like it's gonna need a revision just to reduce the size on top of whatever issues it'll have at launch that it will 100% have at launch.

For the true 3DS and DS endgame it would have to be what that guy a thread or two ago suggested where you have a 3DS-style system but screens that allow you to integer scale both 3DS and DS in parity (I think it was 4x for 3DS and 9x for DS? I forgot the exact screen sizes he showed). The 3D effect just isn't happening and we all have to accept that, but they can do it. True true endgame would be to get the people making replacement DS and 3DS screens to do custom resistive bottom screens for one of these companies (Likely Anbernic) so that you'd get the actual intended feel. The first company that spends that money basically wins unless they do something astronomically stupid like try and make the thing 16:9 or something.

Wins what, an extra 10 sales? Even when it came out, everyone agreed the 3D effect was a pointless gimmick and it isn't hyperbole to say that almost everyone forgot about it like a week after use.

    >The one single Magic X fan says this
I say this because I own one of these things. The RG DS on its own is nearly as big as a Switch 1's screen. It's insanely huge.
    >Even when it came out, everyone agreed the 3D effect was a pointless gimmick
No, not the 3D effect, the resistive touch screen. The major point of contention of all these things is that we're stuck using a screen technology that none of the games were designed for and when you actually try to play these games that focus on the screen you will feel how you constantly drop inputs and the styli require essentially dead center presses to even register a lot of the time. Anbernic already only ships the RG DS+ with Linux so it's not like they can't just make some future device Linux only to account for the resistive screen.

Resistive touch screens have no multi touch capability.

    >>12899684
DS and 3DS games do not and never have had multi-touch inputs. This entire point is pointless. A system that came with these screens would also be on Linux to sidestep the issue of Android so there'd be absolutely zero need for such a screen on top of it.

when PDDs finally become good (as in a not goofy bulky as shit formfactor) and see widespread adoption as a result, chinkhelds won't even have to bother with screens anymore, they'll just be little controller boxes with a soc inside that you plug your PDD (or your tv, if you prefer to while at home) into

You've never emulated touch-focused DS games on these capacitive screens and it shows. The inputs are not even close to the same. The styli either require you to push hard to even register (The rubber domed ones) or dead center on the location (The disc ones), using your finger is clearly off and does not lead to a smooth experience like using an actual DS or 3DS, and it does not register things like flicking inputs or quick inputs as accurately as the resistive screens did. There is a very clear and obvious difference playing games like Rhythm Heaven, Ouendan, TWEWY, Metroid Prime Hunters, Moon, Ninja Gaiden, and the Zeldas on these things than on original hardware. Everything about everything on the touch screen feels off. Zelda felt the closest to me on BananaOS using BananaDS but that's because there's a lot of dragging motions (Something Kirby Canvas Curse also works fine with), but as soon as I had to try stabbing or dodge rolling it loved not reading the inputs at all. TWEWY was a complete pain in the ass because it was not registering taps and slashes mid-combat or even dropping things like held inputs because I was pushing but not hard enough.

These aren't issues on the DS or 3DS. If I play these games exactly like I do on those systems it simply does not work the same at all and in Rhythm Heaven specifically I can't imagine trying to superb everything on these screens. The amount of times my inputs didn't register is insane.

The disc is the best of the two by far but it still drops inputs constantly and if I'm not hitting in the silicone black center of it it doesn't like to register inputs.

They should just make the RG SP with a 3.5 inches 4:3 IPS display like the Miyoo Mini Plus. GBA on 4:3 displays works fine with interger scaling and overlays. That would be perfect.
For a DS focused device like the RG DS+, use the same display with touch and a size close to the DSi an then I will buy this shit.

Anbernics are fine for super budget devices where you aren't concerned with their screens popping out/breaking, or in the mid-tier with handhelds like the 406H/V that are better than expected. When you get to a certain price point though its worth just looking to other companies like Ayaneo/Moorechip for either better build quality or performance.

It's some sort of custom version of Melon because it applies some patches to it and then runs it in some way that makes it work miles better than standalone or the core. I have no idea what black magic they're running to get it to work on the RG DS but I have had zero performance issues with the thing and I don't have weird glitches Drastic throws into the mix on occasion when using it. He also just added DSi support which only works on BananaDS though I think saving is broken because games like Dragon Quest Wars don't work and some games load to a white screen while others work fine.

Thor 2 seems a bit redundant tbqdesu. There's no android apps that can really make use of the power of the Odin 3 either, and I doubt PS3 games will be comfortable to play on a Thor 2 even with a grip in the off chance PS3 emu does get that far ahead. As for whether you want a base Thor or RP Duo, I guess it depends whether you primarily plan on playing stick on top games more or D-pad on top games, you like or hate a glass front, and you don't mind the Duo being weaker than a Thor.

    >>
    >>12902271
Wait and see what the inevitable problems with the DDS will be and then make your decision. Right now your entire thought process for the DS handhelds should be this:
    >AYN Thor
"I want something that plays mostly everything including some Steam games in the dual screen form factor."
    >Retroid Pocket Duo
"I want something more expensive and powerful than an RG DS Plus but without the strength of the Thor for roughly the same price."
    >RG DS Plus
"I want DS and only DS so I will spend $100 and call it a day."
    >RG DDS
"I want 3DS but make concessions for the DS. I want proper integer scaling and screens for the 3DS and that is my focus."

A Thor 2, if it happens, should only be considered if they decide to make the screens integer scale perfectly with both DS and 3DS or have a resistive touch screen otherwise there's just no point over the normal Thor. It's borderline redundant outside of fixing some build quality things.

and that's not to mention the issue of the soc using the battery as a heatsink
still, i love my ambernig and no other device even comes remotely close to it as all the rest have at least one (usually far more) dealbreaker(s) whereas the 35xxh has none, the screen can be replaced (and ideally, should be replaced as soon as one gets it, rather than waiting for it to burst like the fragile thing that it is) and aside from the heatsinking issue the only other thing it could really use is a lanyard hole

I also would like to have purchased an extra screen in case something like that happens to my rg280v, those are not even sold anymore... as in.. the device, let alone the rare 1:2 pixel screen.

I did drop RG35XX from about 1 meter a couple times and it did not break nor crack, but it never hit the floor square on the screen.

I also dropped a Miyoo Mini and the plastic produced tiny cracks, barely visible, but I know its plastic is more brittle, I am more careful with Miyoos than Anbernics to be quite honest.

Otherwise I never had ANY issues with either Anbernic nor Miyoo. I am sure there are quality issues like in EVERY production line, and some will slip through QA, shit happens, but these devices are honestly pretty high quality for the price.

Britain is a very cramped country.
The average home's living space is less than Japan (88 meters for the UK, 95 for Japan).
This means people naturally gravitate towards methods of gaming that don't take up much space, or can be played on the go. People also use public transportation more than Americans (British have about 8x more hours per year than Americans).

Public Transport is 100% THE substrate for handheld gaming. I did love my GBA SP going back and forth to High School and Uni. Also riding busses back and forth to my family's home town.

Before Smartphones, you bet your ass a hand held was the second best thing to a book in such environments, and most people cant read to save their lives.

It did happen to me that in some bus lines inside Monterrey City I would NEVER pull out my device, people got robbed routinely there. It was a lottery but I would never risk it.

Small rural routes were super safe and comfy to play on. Lived for a couple years in Tapalpa, Jalisco and riding the bus through the forest sierras, with panoramic views to rest the mind, alternating with a dozen pages and short bursts of GBA SP.... something else...

Fair. Yet at this rate of AI assisted progress, one can only imagine these things will get patched recursively over a year or two tops, per game. I bet clean room reverse can work to shorte the distance to Delta.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but what do you all think of a jailbreaked PSP-3000 as a handheld emulator for emulating anything up to the 4th generation of games (SNES, Sega Genesis) and 6th gen Gameboy Advance titles?
I heard that the PSP's screen and other hardware components can be modded, like replacing its default screen with an IPS screen and giving the handheld a USB C charger.
Has anyone tried this out? How would rate the experience of playing with a modded PSP for emulating these older games?
    >>
    >>12903302
It's serviceable but you're better off with a $60~ chinkheld for that imo
    >>
    >>12903309
Can you give me some examples of 60 dollar Chinese handhelds that can achieve the same performance results as the kind of modded PSP I mentioned?
Also, how good is the build quality? A relative of mine had an unmodded PSP and it lasted like 6-7 years of regular play before he encountered serious issues.
    >>
    >>12903302
It'll get stuttery in more demanding SNES and GBA games. PSP was neat back in its day, but you're better off with a ~$50 chinkheld unless you specifically want to play PSP games.
    >>
    >>12903313

Damn. It can't even play SNES games without stutters? What if you overclock it?
    >>
    >>12903313
I'll give you the company names, you can check out their websites:

Powkiddy: kind of meh but some decent 'helds for the price
Anbernic: same as above but mostly better and with a wider range of products and functionality
Retroid: kind of the standard for mid-range
Ayn: higher tier android stuff, usually up there in quality
Ayaneo: too expensive to bother but if you've got the cash then check them out

Some other notes, check out Retro Gaming Corps on youtube or any of the other usual chinkheld guys (I forget their names) and when you find some 'helds you like, google "[handheld] problems" or ask here or something, also search youtube for "[handheld] playing [console] games" to see how it performs in real time just in case it wasn't covered in a review video or something. Also buy a real SD card, don't rely on the ones you might get from the chinkheld itself and if you find the chinkheld's OS underwhelming, you can often find custom firmware (especially for linux 'helds) to better your experience.

    >It can't even play SNES games without stutters?
You have to remember that things like the PSP, DS, and 3DS had to have manually ported emulators and specific ones at that, and every time they had to do an update they had to do that manually as well so a lot of what is around to use on it is decades out of date.

The PSP was amazing for the time it was in because we had absolutely nothing else comparable to its capabilities and how easy it was to hack. I think it was years later the GPD Win came out but basically no one could afford the thing and it was unbelievably niche on top of it. Nowadays we have decades of improvement in technology and availability that using anything but a Vita onward is pretty pointless when it comes to emulating on older devices and even then you genuinely would be better off buying a Chinese handheld of some sort even under $100 because it will emulate stuff on par with around a Vita.
    >>
These handhelds are always just *almost* really good.
For example, I made this custom 3d printed shell extender so I could stuff a 5000 mAh battery into a trim ui model s

One of the most warranted and efficient uses of AI Bruteforce. A real programmer-software designer, capable of delegating, supervising, reviewing and approving the work of teams to integrate into concise deliverables, sudenly can become a full blown Project Manager by using the Magic Lamp to carry out the dullest, most repetitive tasks that are usually bottle necked by Human limitations.

On the other side, I do agree with the people enraged by AI, when it comes to Humanities and Arts, which are RAPED by the synths in the hands of Amateurs and Slop Merchants.

    >Trimui model s
Pretty fun due to its compact size, and surprisingly comfortable (unless you try to use the shoulder buttons, those are pretty much an afterthought), but it has several flaws. The screen is tiny, the chip is low performance, and the battery is very small. Worse, it doubled in price between spring 2025 and now. I got one when it was still cheap, and use it exclusively for GB/GBC games, but I can't recommend it in good conscience, given its recent price increase.

    >>12904670
Ironically, reverse engineering code via brute force is something techbros are extremely butthurt about (heavens forbid somebody makes a better product than their overpriced garbage, which was vibecoded anyway), whereas outright stealing books, art and movies to train their models for slop production is perfectly fine by them.

I love my RG DS+ but I have only ran two cycles through it, but even if it calibrates with time, I dont think it can play for more than 4 hours, TOPS. It is fine though, for me. I play in 1 - 2 hours bursts usually, and I always have a charger in hand. With GammaOS I can play 2 hours and fill it up again in half an hour, which is more than fine for domestic use.

On the road, though, the RG DS+ should ideally at least deliver 10 hours. I dont mind it becoming a thicc brick. Then again, charging bricks are a thing, this is a Minor issue. For ME.

I think I really would have like this game as a kid, never heard about it until recently but its a solid action rpg.

the sequel is the same game, except it gets pretty long in the tooth and quite annoying at parts
and while i like the games, i kind of wish at least one of them was a more fully fleshed out action adventure platformer instead of a faux rpg with simplistic psuedo fighting game combat, something where you had to fully utilize all of your weapon slots in order to get through the dungeon levels with enough weapon durability, via maximizing the damage types and attack profiles of the weapons vs the weaknesses (and avoiding the resistances) and movement patterns of the enemies
i know some retard is goingbto try naming some shit that they think fulfills that vision, but that will just show that they never played swordcraft story and don't understand its inherent properties, because no such game as i have described remotely exists

I have the blue one, and honestly, it looks silver 90% of the time unless I intentionally hold it up to the light,
that's when you can really see the color. The render they use is blatantly oversaturated. I think I would have chosen the tranny pink or the black one instead. Pictelated It's a case where I intentionally used good lighting.

I've been looking at footage and reviews of people playing the RG34XX, and it made me curious as to how the hell Nintendo can ever try to sell a modern Gameboy Advance handheld with these Chinese handhelds providing so much at 60 bucks.
Meanwhile, if Nintendo is to ever try to sell us a throwback Gameboy Advance (like they did with the SNES Mini), it'll probably cost at least 100 dollars, and will only be able to play a predetermined list of games (whereas the Chinese handhelds will be able to play everything on the GBA and other older consoles like SNES and Mega Drive).

God bless the Chinese. I wonder why no company in the US/EU has stepped up to create similar products.
    >>
    >>12905673
Nintendo would legitimately make more money off individual pokemon ports on switch than if they had rereleased a GBA or come out with a GBA Mini.
    >>
    >>12905673
    >I wonder why no company in the US/EU has stepped up to create similar products.
I have to assume it's because the price would skyrocket on even H700-tier devices to something like $100-$150. A lot of these companies are getting access to factory rejects, overstocks, or other similar things and repurposing what would otherwise be e-waste while also being in China to do this so there's no need to ship anything or have trouble sourcing them. I think someone said the H700 chips were meant for Roomba knockoffs or smart fridges? Same deal with things like screens. Many of the devices use either S1 or S2 Joycon sticks or Vita sticks.

There's also the issue of them having to sell these exclusively online making it harder to market them, the legal rigamarole they'd have to deal with if someone like Sony or Nintendo start getting pissy they're appearing in western markets, and how they would even market them to casual buyers without the prefilled SD cards.

People in the west generally lean more towards something like the Evercade or FPGA stuff rather than emulation-only devices because they either want officially licensed products or things that play stuff they already own. That's why the Analogue stuff took off in particular.

For the first part of your question, what she said >>12905689 but while nintendo would pay the overstocked warehouse factories more, they wouldn't go for h700's. They would go for every single 3326 and 3566 until there are non left. Their vertical would have no sticks unlike the r36s and they'll put GameCube ports just to fuck with the telegram group.

what i can add to what other anons have already written is that nintendo doesn't like selling hardware, they make way more profit from software. they rather make you pay for the online subscription than making another mini console. they already unified their audience making the switch family a 2-in-1 home console and handheld and now that they tasted the reduced development cost of having to target only one piece of hardware they don't want to go back.
their nes mini was just an experiment that worked only because they did it at the right time, the snes mini didn't do as well, so they dropped the idea of another follow up.
    >>
    >>12905718

As others already said - These handhelds all use surplus components from Chinese factories. This makes them exceptionally cheap and relatively easy to obtain for Chinese producers. US and EU would first need to clear all their import bullshit and then still they would be paying extra for shipping all this crap. On top of that China can just laugh at Nintendo and other video game companies while stuffing their handhelds with pirated games.

Existence of Chinkhelds is just the result of Chinese economy. It cannot be really recreated in any other country.
    >>
    >>12906143
anyone can do it, the main advantage of china is the cheap cost of labor for assembly. you could buy a pallet of screens on clearance, a pallet of old chips on clearance, a bunch of batteries, and then a bunch of buttons and shells and then put them together anywhere in the world.

Same reason WIFI never goes off either, it was meant to be a streaming portable projector.

I'm thinking of buying an Arc-D, but I'm on the fence about two things

    1. The screen is only 640x480
    2. Anbernic might be releasing a new model soon, since the Arc-D/S has been discontinued.

Should I waitfag? Or will Arc D prices only go up now due to scarcity?

    >>12906850
Anbernic likes to have all bases covered. Arc-D might have been a slow seller, but it did sell out.
    >>
    >>12906889
Now with the rampocalypse companies are much more picky on what to spend resources on. We're past the golden age of chinahelds where they could throw everything at the wall hoping something sticks
    >>
    >>12906896
I wouldn't call it a golden age. If anything I think alot of these companies are only finally finding their footing.
    >>
    >>12907010
Yeah, gotta second this. They're starting to realize there's demand for specific niche things and so they're capitalizing on it.
    >Anbernic is capitalizing on clone systems so people get the same form factor just with the ability to be arguably better than buying a modded OG system like with the RG SP and RG34XX. Even the RG DS Plus is now flourishing due to CFW.
    >Retroid is capitalizing on higher end devices that ignore people's want for a one-and-done machine but instead does stuff like the Nova explicitly for people who just want a 4:3 machine or doing experimental stuff like a high spec device like the Thor now that they've settled in on the Pockets essentially being strong Vitas.
    >TrimUI is capitalizing on a sort of low budget but good build quality market.
At least when I got into this a few years back everyone was just flinging a device out every few months just for the sake of it and we still had weird stuff like the Retroid Pocket Classic or the random stuff Anbernic was doing. Miyoo was also still alive as a brand instead of endlessly making worse SP clones than Anbernic. Now the worst things we tend to see are Anbernic being stupid with the RG Vita?

It's like everyone has to be more deliberate except for Anbernic who either goes full retard like with the RG Vita and RG DS or somehow lucks out into smash hits like the RG DS Plus, SP, and 34XX with the DDS potentially also being another hit for the market that just wants 3DS.
    >>
    >>12907064
The Nova is the perfect example of what these companies should be doing though. It is basically an ideal product. It captures an entire chunk of video game history (basically all pre HD games), and is designed to give the user a more or less optimal experience for playing them. I think it is a much better device than all of these halfassed products that get immediately invalidated, sometimes before they even come out. I don't even know how you could improve upon the Nova in ways that wouldn't just be almost pointless QOL features or sidegrades. If you want to play something from the NES era all the way through to a Xbox, there's nothing better.
