>>12902815Is it indie if it's published by a major publisher, or would it be closer to a AA game?
>>12902815Pretty crazy all things considering how some dude would make complete games in a 2 years, a year or even less, and very often for free too. This would be very uncommon today. Some did not even had any real budget. Nowadays almost all indie have thousands of dollars in budget, things are wild.Though I guess there was also a lot less competition so it was easier to be seeing.>>12902829That's actually a good question. Personally I would consider it AA or... A? I feels like AA is too big of a budget for this. I forgot if A games were a thing or not. But it's not indie to me.
>>12902847Shantae is certainly a lower-budget game, being handled by a separate pocket team at Wayforward. It falls in a grey area because it was financed mostly from their licensed work, with Capcom on board as the publisher when it was nearly completed.
>>12902847>Pretty crazy all things considering how some dude would make complete games in a 2 years, a year or even lessWhen John Romeo and John Carmack started out they were publishing a new game every month to two months. The first three commander keen games took three months total to develop.
>>12902857Thanks for reminding me of that Mega Man DOS port made by a single person. I've heard the story go that its "third" entry used to be an original game unrelated to MM, but the publisher wanted to change it to use MM assets instead. (Which is bizarre, because DOS MM already used a zoomed crop of MM3's boxart for its cover.)

>>12902862Playing this on a beige shit box with onboard PC speakers is just pvre fvcking sovl. Unmatched.
>>12903073It was picked due to the rules of the board which prohibit after December 2007, but personally I consider this era of indies to end around 2010, though 2009-2010 was the start of indies releasing more and more paid games, it wasn't all of them though.
>>12903076>2009-2010 was the start of indies releasing more and more paid gamesAnd it all started because of XBLA and PSN, too. (Wiiware too, to a lesser extent.)
>>12903076>>12903082>though 2009-2010 was the start of indies releasing more and more paid gamesI have the impression that Capcom with Mega Man 9 was the beginning of the end. At the time it was legitimately surprising, and even the trailer had it as a surprise, that a big company was releasing a long awaited sequel to a major franchise as a retro pixel game. It was a massive success. That to me was the start of paid retro pixel platformers, as companies realized there was a public willing to pay. Before that, a retro pixel platformer would often be freeware, or a flash game.
urban terror was a fun alternative to CS at the time. was never really a mod person and this was probably the one i sank the most time in. it felt like a fully featured retail game
>>12903075Same dev managed to outdo himself with a later DOS port of MMX. Sadly Capcom were too stubborn to share source code, so they simply gave the guy art assets instead.
>>12902862Microsoft Man
>>12903128There was also something called AssaultCube which was like that but a lot more basic, if I remember right
