>Is the best 2D Mario game in your path
>>12904189Unironically, this.
inclined to agree, wish Mario had more puzzle games like it (that don't suck like the later 2D Mario puzzle games)to me this is the best Mario ever felt to control, better than his actual platforming games somehow
>>12904956kino
>>12904189I'm waiting on the colorization hack to play it.
>>12905090It already exists and it's not a hack
>>12904956the original movementslop?
>>12904189it;s actually insane how many mechanics this game has. it actually puts the console games to shame. i know they came before it but still. this game is rich in replayability. it's a bit of a shame that it's locked to the gameboy
>>12905096The official Super Game Boy support is impressive, but an actual colorization hack is nearing completion now.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPBLh4gqEh0https://www.timeextension.com/features/interview-it-is-our-gift-to-game-boy-and-donkey-kong-fans-meet-the-rom-hacker-whos-spent-the-past-four-years-remastering-donkey-kong-94This guy's done good shit already like Mega Man World 5 DX and Mole Mania DX.
>>12905110the original movementKINO
>>12904956Why didn't Mario just do this the first time around instead of waiting 'till '94.
>>12905384it's the origin of the triple jump and side jump, cornerstones of 3D mario movement. the finesse you could preform really was unparalleled in 2D mario.
What I love about this game is that it tricks newcomers. At first it makes you think it's just a port of arcade Donkey Kong.
>>12905435that's a very risky business move, idk how nintendo let them do it
>>12905395He was still in training, duh.The REAL LORE MELTDOWN PLOTHOLE is why he didn't use all those moves in Super Mario Bros., since DK94 canonically precedes it.
>>12905557The original Donkey Kong was so popular that even if people misinterpreted the game, a lot of them would still want to buy it.
>>12905172Yeah, I'm gonna play this
>>12905096That's not real colorization.
>>12905172Looks great, but I would rather he had left the graphics as-is and sunk the same amount of time and effort into hacking the rom to have all new levels. It's a shame after all these years two only have two romm-hacks of this game, and one of those is only 4 levels. Meanwhile, Lolo has multiple complete hacks.
>>12905669>I would rather he was doing something that has nothing to do with what he's doingOK?
>>12905130Based take. It was one of those GameBoy games that made me glad I had it, and realized it wasn't just a portable lesser NES/SNES. It really had it's own value.Wario Land, Zelda and this stand at the top for me right now.
>>12904189Yeah, I was shocked back in the day. I had Super Mario Land 1 and 2 too and they were fine. Just fine. DK'94 nukes them from orbit. The OST in the game alone is peak. Such a damn good game.
>>12905561This was 1994 though. Some dumb magazines were like "giving us a port of a 10 year old arcade game isn't going to be enough, especially to support the SGB"
>>12904189The love for this game feels so performative. It's cool for a GB game and all, especially if you just expected a port of the arcade game, but it's just really not that fun to play and drags the whole time.
>>12905110I think that's it. Midwits go crazy for games with pointless filler movement flourishes.
>>12904189fair enough, but I think mario vs donkey kong on gba (not the sanitized remake on switch) is actually really good. Grew up with that one, but never played the original on gameboy but I know its good.
>>12905435I genuinely never knew and absolutely would have bought the game if it did, but didn't because it really did seem to be what it looked like. The game no doubt lost an incredible number of customers because of this.
>>12905435I mean, it tells you everything about its real scope with previews of all areas except Tower in the manual - so obviously it caught most people by complete surprise.
>>12905435I'm pretty sure I didn't buy it as a kid because I thought it was just the old DK with new visuals. I had one of those Game&Watch collections that I wasn't exactly crazy about so it was a legitimate assumption.
>>12905560DK94 is a stage play. Mario warms up the audience by showing off his moves if you let the title screen sit for a while.
>>12905172Could you imagine if companies paid a couple of autists to make these for a fraction of an actual game's cost and sell it on PC, phone and every console at a budget price. But nah, every game has to do Fortnite/GTA numbers or it's a fucking failure and the studio has to get shuttered immediately because line did not go up 5000%
>>12906075That was the cool thing about the nintendo portables, they were all budget games that weren't expected to sell millions, so there was a lot more creative stuff on them. Now with the switch there's no distinction between portable and home console anymore, so every game needs to be triple A.We would never have wario if it wasn't for that
>>12906075Well he's done some actual good ones, so go play them
>>12906090I don't get why people want Wario to go back to being a full-time archenemy for Mario. It really only worked once in his debut when he was played up as a Bizarro World parody of Mario, and it was ultimately for the better that Wario broke away and became his own character.
>>12906106it would be nice to see them fighting in a new game, but yeah he better being his own character
