    I'm in Latam and I had a PS1 since 1996.
They all came already modchipped and all games on all stores were bootlegs (mostly imported from asia), I never saw an original PS1 game until the 2000s

very and no laws to shut it down

i had access to.an irc bot and an ftp server with everything i found from talking to people on aol and quake. the only limiter was bandwidth, i was on dialup so i stuck to smaller file size games to pirate like roms and 700mb disc games i would get for christmas my birthday and if it was a 2-4 player game my mom would let us buy it on release
    >>
Grew up in Germany, out of all the people I knew who had a PS1 in the late 90s only one single guy didn't have it modded. Everyone knew at least one guy who either had a burner himself or had access to one at work, so parents were just like "Why should I pay money for my son's video games when I can just get them copied?"
The only reason to buy a game was when neither the local rental shop or some of your friends already had that specific game, so most people had way more copied games than originals.
Dunno if it was just a regional thing tho, basically every shop that modded consoles or sold modchips was owned by Czechs living near the border, so I guess having a country full of shady people just a one-hour drive away probably helped lol.

Laws only work if you fear the police'in of those laws. And there was no judge dredd for game piracy. The state (ran by boomers) didn't understand or care about computer games. Real police had to deal with the L.A riots, crackheads, and lack of funding. Do you think they gave a fuck about some kid playing a burnt ape escape disk?

Not as common as one would claim. For example you needed a modchip for PS1 and the piracy scene was very niche, that's why many PS1 games ended up with greatest hits titles, making the PS1 the best selling console and the most attractive console to third party publishers.

It wasn't until 2001 where piracy finally claimed a victim(Dreamcast). The Dreamcast piracy scene was widespread and required no modchips at all. If Dreamcast were released in the mid 90's, it would have been game over for both Nintendo and Sony.
    >>
    >>12901796
Very dependent on which year in the 90s you're talking about. Watch many anons in this thread not understand the 90s are not the 2000s.

You still had to purchase the system to play the games, retard. Not a single developer declined to port their games to DC because of piracy. Your faggot forced meme is forced.
    >>
    >>12901936
During its lifespan, more PS1 modchips were sold than Dreamcast consoles.
Maybe the Dreamcast just died because it had shit marketing and mostly just mediocre exlusive titles? Who knows, maybe Sega's management itself was also kinda retarded.
    >>
    >>12901796
Man I had so many pirated copies of Dreamcast games. It was a gold mine. With PS1, had some copies, but far far fewer.
    >>
    >>12901796
On PC? Common enough, you'd just burn shit to a CD.
    >>
    >>12901946
    >>12901952
Your poorfaggotry defense of piracy doesn't work here. It's not a meme, piracy definitely killed the Dreamcast, driving third party publishers away from the platform as a result. Modchips in PS1 was way less common. In fact it's unlikely that more "modchips sold" than Dreamcast did. Cope and seethe harder bruh.
    >>
    This thread sucks.
    >>
    >>12901943
It's not like they already were super common, but at around 98/99 they also weren't as ridiculously expensive anymore than they used to be. The average guy didn't have one yet, but for some people like tech nerds, musicians, or others who could use it for their hobby or job, spending a few hundred bucks for one seemed worth it.
    >>
    >>12901796
Everyone I knew with an Amiga pirated games. I knew a few people with SNES disk copiers. Most people I knew with PS1's had mod chips installed.

Piracy did not kill the Dreamcast.

Over its 27-month lifespan, an average of 6.3 games were sold per console.
At the time the discontinuation of the Dreamcast was announced, there were 8.2 million consoles in existence.
During its first 27 months, the PS2 had an average of 5.8 games sold per console.

Therefore, if you claim that piracy killed the Dreamcast, you must believe that it reduced potential game sales and caused Sega to lose money.
Yet, over the same period, Sony sold fewer games, and they didn't go under.
So, no—piracy did not kill the Dreamcast. Furthermore, pirating Dreamcast games was not accessible to the general public when the console was first released.

It was probably more exciting outside of bongland, most chipped gamers were chavs the most casual of casual gamers, didn’t even have many games just fifa and yes possibly Tekken or Spyro (all PAL). I got chipped games from one of my uncles (the one who broke my aunts ribs in a domestic) and he only had the most entry level shit, I had to download (once, with a 56k) and eventually buy imports myself
    >>
    >>12902013
I had a weird conversation with a neighbour talking about games where I must have brought up the Famicom Disk System tangentially and he said he used to know someone with one which I was pretty bowled over by, at some point much later on I realised it’s much more likely that he meant his buddy had a SNES copier device (for some reason very early on euros / bongs were calling the SNES the Famicom, not even the Super Famicom strictly, I imagine because there was a scene of importers and even piracy early on and if they even had much awareness of the NES to begin with they probably weren’t already massively accustomed to hearing it being called a Famicom).
    >>
    >>12901796
It was everywhere over here, practically all console shops offered chipping services. PC stores could also sell burned games. It was all under the counter of course.

    >>12901946
    >Not a single developer declined to port their games to DC because of piracy.
Developers gave no shit because they just developed to whatever systems Publishers commissioned them to work on. It was the publishers who all pulled the plug and said they don't want to release Half-Life or Black & White. It was usually in Japan where developers chose to support the DC but that was because they released Naomi first, then a DC port a year or two later.

    >Your faggot forced meme is forced.
Store owners said circa 2001-2002 that once the boot disc came out, their DC game sales dropped like a stone, despite the hardware still selling as good as before. Piracy absolutely killed the Dreamcast.
    >>
    >>12902450
That possibly happened because the euro SNES release date was 1.5 years later. In late 1990/early 1991 you could already import Super Famicom from Hong Kong, but it wasn't sold in stores until mid-1992 (UK had it as early as May, but mainland Europe didn't have it until after summer).

We had a lot of HK Megadrives as well (they were purple like japanese units but had PAL motherboards). I still have my pirate carts from 1992.
    >>
    >>12902467
Yeah I'm pretty sure that was their first encounter with the term Famicom so they just called it that, then they sort of maybe realised the NES was called that in Japan since some of those guys were importing Japanese magazines. I've never come across any indication that anybody in the West was importing Famicoms much less Game Doctors etc even pre-mid 90s and NES emulators but I'd be happy to be proven wrong, guess they just jumped in with the SNES and carried on from there.

Not very I think I was the only person I know to put a mod chip in my Dreamcast and PlayStation.

Not only that I didn't see much discussion about it on the forums I belong to. Most people were amazed that I played so many games when in fact I burned them and was able to play Japanese games without purchasing the Japanese system.

Not piracy but you could find places that sold bootleg ps1 disks for like $5 that worked without modchips and you were basically a retard if you bought new games full price in the 90s
    >>
Like everything else before widespread internet access homogenized culture, it heavily depended on your location. Where I grew up it was unheard of. In other places, pirated games were more common than original ones.
    >>
    >>12901952
Most modchips for the PS1 were DIY jobbies to be made with cheap microcontrollers, they weren't products to be sold as such.
    >>12902432
Not to the general public maybe but anyone slightly with even dialup and some decent (IRL) connections (like an internet café, for example) had ways to get pirated discs easily, and by that point CD burners were starting to be common. Though, I agree with you, piracy didn't kill the Dreamcast, like the PS1 and 2, but it was still fairly common, like PS1 and 2. It sure did give the DC a great afterlife though, immediately and now.

Sega has done it all themselves. They spent too much time on the Genesis and it's addons. The Saturn was an inferior product on release, compared to the competition, and they dropped it like a stone instead of making do. The Dreamcast was Sega's last gasp in a market they squandered, and they released it too soon. Too soon to iron out the bugs, and too soon to actually get more sixth-gen titles in its fifth-gen library. And in the end, it offered nothing. All the fuckups in the 90s from Japan, America, and Europe had done them in. Piracy was the fucking least of their problems, you goddamn psycho. Mismanagement killed the Dreamcast, and that is the final truth. May God have no mercy on your diseased soul.
