90's bros... we LOST
I'm only 40 years old, I feel ancient...
>Doom>Assassin's Creednow do the same poll but>Ocarina of Time>Call of Duty 2
>>12898049Doom's better than ass creed
>>12898049It says best video games, why would Ocarina of Time be there?
>>12898058Doom 2016 maybe
well obviously the only reason 2000's gets more votes is because that's when the majority of people started playing video games. before that, PC gaming was niche, and consoles were cool but for most people it was probably more like something you did when you were bored, and there was no real gaming culture to be a part of yet.
>>12898124Sorry I'm drunk I meant to say Doom 3.
Not retro
>>12898125>when the majority of people started playing video games. No it actually got more votes because 2000s games weren't restricted to the same rehashes of 2d games where you're limited to going left and right
>>12898029Lost what? This is all subjectiveNow make this same pool at a Retro PC festival and see what happens
>>12898180>i'll say the same thing, but different
>>12898029I'm in my 40s and I agree. No sane person would ever choose 90s if the stakes were higher, say, being allowed to play only 90s games for the rest of their life.
>>12898029was that voting for the 2000s or just for ac?
>>12898029Roundhouse kick zoomers into concrete
>>12898213you're crazy if you think no one wants to go back to the 90's.
>>12898125>that whole postutter nonsense
>>12898230Maybe whites and asians. Even then.
>>12898029if we're explicitely talking about "The best games" and the voting reasons were the sixth generation and the last year of the fifth, then I understand why it is favored. But in general terms, I'd say the 90's have better games on average thanks to arcades.
>>12898312must be painful to be this retarded.
There are hardly any games from the 00s I still play or even think about. I guess I would lament the loss of Advance Wars but that's about it.It would harder to decide which is better, 80s or 90s.
>>12898684>which is better, 80s or 90sThis is as insane as being unsure if 70s ot 80s games are better.
>>12898049ocarina really isn't a good game.
>>12898049/thread
>>12898029>random poll that the anon chose not to include the source ofTrannie-bros, our response?
>>12898180>2000s games weren't restricted to the same rehashes of 2d games where you're limited to going left and rightNeither were 90's games though?
>>12898029Basically you're either getting>SNES,N64,Gameboy>Genesis,Saturn, Game Gear>Playstation 1>meme shit like 3DO and Jaguar or>PS2,PS3,PSP>Dreamcast>GameCube,Wii>Gameboy Advance,DS>Xbox, Xbox 360with or course PC gaming throughout both. Not bad either way but I think 2000's era definitely had the edge
>>12898036Drake just turned 40 and he still acts like he's 26
>>12898215>KOTOR>Animal Crossing>SA2:B>DMC3>Halo: CEyou tell me
>>128982232010s didn't win doh
>>12898693this90s lost because it's primitive in comparison00s gets judged rather by sheer quality
>>12898749it's crazy how polls still aren't searchable in any way
>>12898769Dreamcast is a 90s console >.>
>>12898784Technically, but it was released on 9/9/99 which barely counts . It's definitely more of a 2000's console
>>12898752These graphics were kino.
>>12898769You're missing arcades
OP stumbled across a random 2000s nostalgia vid for zoomers and now the algorithm keeps feeding him with reddit tier polls in the same context.
>>12898029quick poll: who answers polls?
>>12898213I absolutely would pick 90s, especially for just the PC variety.
>>12898312he's right thoughEven through something as basic as sales data, 6th and 7th gen consoles were the most influential in games in terms of market variety and cultural impactToday games as a whole are bleeding out fast because conventional gaming has been priced out from the younger generation. It's more common to find Zoomers into other media rather than games, and gen Alpha won't have childhood memories to hold onto by the time they grow up if this memory shortage keeps up for much longer.
>>12898213I wouldn't choose the 90's because it would mean giving up everything I've ever earned
I feel like the 90s are nore consistent. 90s PC games plus almost all of 4th and 5th Gen would provide unlimited amounts of games to play for the rest of my my life. I like 6th Gen but PC gaming was declining in the second half of the decade and 7th Gen has a lot of trash.
>>12898902This. Only the first half of the 2000s is worth a damn with only the psp and DS and late ps2 stuff providing anything of substance.
>>12898180Yeah instead we got a bunch of 3D rehashes trying to rip each other off.
even though i grew up with the ps1, i must admit that stuff like mgs3, burnout 3 and san andreas mog the vast majority of the previous gen. low poly is heckin soulful, but gen 6 was the peak gameplay wise. you are free to prove me wrongalso, pokemon gen 3 hoenn mogs gen 1 and 2
>>12898117>>12898729The point is that Doom intentionally looks very old and pixelated compared to a 2000s 3D action game like Assassin's Creed. Also most young people wouldnt be able to even recognize that zombie soldier in the pic as being from Doom, it's just some flat, pixelated, blurry 2D thing compared to Assassin's Creed which is instantly recognizable as it features the main character. If they used OoT and CoD2, nobody would even recognize the latter as CoD2 because it would look so generic while OoT would be instantly recognizable and would thus win the poll.
>>12898991the average moment in cod2 will be infinitely more entertaining than anything in oot.
>>12898029Time will do that. The 90s are far enough in the rearview mirror that current 20-somethings never lived it.To make a comparison, a very good argument could be made that the 70s was the peak decade for cinema. But if you took a poll there's zero chance it would win.Take solace in that we lived through the best era of gaming even though it dies with us.
>>12898230I want to go back too, but I wouldn't pick 90s games over the 00s.
>>12899646there were plenty of great PC games that anon clearly doesn't know about. if all you had to live with was console games, maybe i could agree. i've been a pc gamer since 91, i could easily survive. i still play many of those games today.
>>12898029This a weird cut off. The golden age was closer to 95 to 05.
>>12898029Its not really a loss. The aughts were the first decade that gaming grew to encompass casuals, the people who grew up with Halo and Asscreed. Of course there are going to be more votes, there were more people involved. Doesn't mean the aughts are actually better - it was a much better hobby when there were no casuals, no browns and no normies in it.
Good, I want people to finally stop inflating retro prices. Go inflate your gtas and halos
>>12899646"Going back" is a different question than what decade was the best for games. The 2000s was amazing for actually having access to all the games from the 90s. The PS2 was a goldmine for arcade compilations, for example.
>>12899669What PC games from the 90s could possibly keep you entertained for a lifetime?
>>12899868very silly question anon, and also, i don't think you know quite how many great games were released from 90-99. I asked AI for a list of the top 100 PC games from 90-99, and deleted all the ones I haven't played;Doom (1993)The Secret of Monkey Island (1990)SimCity 2000 (1993)Wolfenstein 3D (1992)Lemmings (1991)Civilization (1991)Myst (1993)Wing Commander (1990)Alone in the Dark (1992)Betrayal at Krondor (1993)Day of the Tentacle (1993)Sam & Max Hit the Road (1993)Syndicate (1993)Master of Orion (1993)Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (1992)Ultima VII: The Black Gate (1992)X-Wing (1993)The Incredible Machine (1992)Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers (1993)Diablo (1996)Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness (1995)X-COM: UFO Defense (1994)Quake (1996)Duke Nukem 3D (1996)Command & Conquer: Red Alert (1996)TIE Fighter (1994)System Shock (1994)Star Wars: Dark Forces (1995)Command & Conquer (1995)Warcraft: Orcs & Humans (1994)The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall (1996)Doom II: Hell on Earth (1994)

>>12899938>>1289994000's has better versions of all that and more
>>12899942The question was not which games were better, the question was how many of those games could keep me entertained for a lifetime, and thats just a top list of games I have played and doesn't include the hundred or so other games i've also played.
>>12899942>>12899952and FYI, all of those games are fucking bangers. It really doesn't matter if "better games" were released later.
>>12898029the answer is both. 4th, 5th, and 6th gens were the literal peak of videogames.
>>12899942>better versions of all thatLet's go through the list shall we? Or, at least some of the list>DoomAll others after this were a down-grade. Different, enjoyable, but the original is still best.>Wing CommanderThe only better ones were the ones from the 90's that released after the first one. Other than that, all others are dogshit.>Sam and MaxNice efforts, but mostly just walking simulators with occasional puzzles.>Master of OrionAgain, all imitators are absolute dogshit.>DiabloDiablo 2 is better, I will give you that one.>Warcraft 2Warcraft 3 is also better.>QuakeStill the best, unquestionably.>X-COM UFO DEFENSEI don't even think it needs to be said how much better the original is.>Duke Nukem 3DI think we're all aware of the travesty that was Duke Nukem after DN3D released. A few consoles games were fun on the PS1 and N64, but in the 2000's and beyond, he became an absolute joke.>X-Wing / TIE FighterStill GOAT Star Wars space action games.>DaggerfallDepends on what you prefer in an RPG; believability and immersion and actual roleplaying? Daggerfall obviously beats Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. You can simply do more.>Mechwarrior 2Mechwarrior 4 is the peak, I'll give you that one.>Age of EmpiresAge of Empires 2 was the peak, and guess what...1999 release date.>Tom Clancy's Rainbow SixRainbow Six 1 and Rogue Spear have yet to be topped. Rainbow Six 3 got close, but the ragdoll and suspect AI killed it as a successor.>Aliens vs PredatorPeople like AVP2 for the multiplayer mainly, and its singleplayer is okay...For the marines. AVP 1999 had much better balance between the Marine, Alien, and Predator campaigns and was a more well-rounded experience. >EverquestThe only MMO I played as an adult, and now have nostalgia for only a few years later.>StarcraftThink it's obvious the original is king. Starcraft is decent, but pales in comparison in terms of execution and replayability.>Tomb RaiderNo-brainer.
>>12898773That's because of all the adrenochrome he drinks.
>>12899980>Daggerfall obviously beats Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. You can simply do more.No you can't
>>12898029Early 2000s was alright but it got worse during 7th gen
>>12898029The 00's piss filter / move game era can go to hell. It's when the rot set in.
>>12899868Nta, but just the volume of them alone of a vast variety of genres would take up most of your free time to go through. I'm still finding new stuff i never knew about just by browsing through thrift store cd bins.
>>12899942No. Especially compare the quantity of Adventure and RTS games in the 90s to the 2000s, especially the later half.
>>12898125
I'm guessing there's a huge chunk of millenials that grew up with Gen 5 and 6 but have no nostalgia for Gen 4. So for them the golden age would be 1995-2005.
>>12898029I was around for both, and they felt like one continuous time period of back to back masterpieces.2000’s wins because it is additive; it continues the progress of the 90’s without letting go of what made it great thanks to the GBA/DS. But in terms of highs, they are equal.
>>12900240i was there, you weren't. eat shit, kiddo.
>>12899980>Duke Nukem 3DNot the same franchise, but Max Payne beats DN3D's ass. >Quake>still the bestYeah, nah. The gameplay is very shallow and the choppy 5 fps animations are objectively bad. More modern games like Crysis are objectively better. The only thing Quake did better is not being a storyshit game, but MW2 and MW3 Spec Ops missions, the pinnacle of all FPS games, aren't story driven either. >Daggerfall >simply do moreNah. Absolutely not. Annoyed that you can't kill named NPCs in Skyrim? Well you can't even touch named NPCs in Daggerfall.
Anyone born after 1990 doesn't get to have an opinion on gaming in the 90's.
Putting aside the bait, it is an artibrary cutoff because Y2K era games are part of the 90s spiritually. 2000s doesn't really begin until 2004 or so.
>>12900467I'm inclined to agree based purely on the fact people born afterward literally don't appreciate where "their" hobby came from and look at an old masterpiece, condemn the graphics, and walk away.
>>12900451How the fuck do you even compare duke to max payne? Duke wins on level design alone.
>>12900491My main issue is that the majority were, with certainty, console gamers, and they dismiss the impact that PC gaming had despite being relatively niche due to its cost of entry and technical skill requirements.
>>12900568While the stereotypes of PC gaming in America weren't quite as bad as Japan, normies absolutely did look down on PC gaming for the most part. Computer gaming in the 80s and 90s was seen as something for smelly, autistic nerds with caustic personalities or perverts obsessed with playing Western erotic games or pirated hentai games. The 2000s made it even worse with MMOs and flashslop. It doesn't help that even today on /vr/ and /v/ PC gamers tend to be the most bitter and obnoxious demographic in gaming, with a massive superiority complex and chip on their shoulder.
>>12899770>The golden age was closer to 95 to 05.This nigga gets it. Same goes for fashion and electronic music.
>>12900467They absolutely do if all they had was a toaster PC that could only run 90s games.
>>129004892004 culture was way closer to late 90s culture than it was to 2008 culture.
>>12898180Hey zoomie
>>12900625>PC gamers tend to be the most bitter and obnoxious demographic in gamingtbqh, we have a right to be bitter. console gamers ruined everything. maybe not people personally, but as a consequence of console gaming becoming more popular and changing priorities of the industry.
>>12900451>Not the same franchise, but Max Payne beats DN3D's ass.Cool, it plays nothing like Duke Nukem 3D,>Crysis is better than QuakeCool, it plays nothing like Quake.>but MW2 and MW3 Spec Ops missions, the pinnacle of all FPS games, aren't story driven either. You deserve to be slam-dunked into concrete.>Nah. Absolutely not. Annoyed that you can't kill named NPCs in Skyrim? Well you can't even touch named NPCs in Daggerfall. Can you buy a boat in Skyrim? Can you climb in Skyrim, I mean actively climb over things as a dedicated action? Can you use banks? Own a wagon to haul your loot around? There's simply way more investment into actually roleplaying in Daggerfall it's not even funny.
>>12900467>anon was born in 1990
>>12898976>grew up with ps1>acknowledges gen iii superioritywere you poor?
>>12898180it got more votes because most people participating in the poll were born between 1995 and 2010, so their first exposure to video games was the PS2 gen.
>>12898125Na it's just the kids on this board
>>12903692all of my friends that i grew up with had consoles, played video games every once in awhile, but were far more interested in getting laid during their teenage years, and most of them eventually got married and had kids. None of them play video games anymore or treat it seriously outside of what they can blow an hour on in between being an adult. unlike me, because i never grew up and i've been doing the same thing for 35+ years. sad to most normies maybe, but i know what i like and i dont have or care to spend my time on anything else outside of work to survive and fund my addiction.
>>12898029I think it needs to be understood that the 2000's was when video games ballooned in popularity. 80's and 90's, it was mostly seen as kids and nerd stuff, and while there was an increase of popularity towards the late 90's, it still pales in comparison. And quite a lot of people that grew up with games back then that aren't nerds have moved on. Where as even normies that grew up with games in the 2000's are still playing games well into adulthood today.
>>12898773Drake is also a rich fag.
>>12898029And I’ll bet more than half of the people who answered le silly poll weren’t even alive to have played games during most of the 90s. Add to that, the early 2000s are doing a lot of the heavy lifting for that decade, and early 2000s was basically 90s fumes.
