How many post-Pokemon heavy-hitters could've made it to Game Gear had they not been exclusive to Game Boy? Realistically, all of them could've been multiplats.

    Such as?

Shantae and SMBDX come to mind. Just about every GBC game since it was released extremely late in the GB's life.
    >>

is kinda wild when you look at gameboy vs gamegear
    >gameboy 1989
    >gamegear 1991
    >gameboy color 1998
gamegear only has a slightly slower cpu than gbc. its gpu is actually better surprisingly.
it shows specs really don't matter when you have exclusives.

maybe one day people will port gameboy games to gamegear to show what could have been.
    >>
    >>12899665
The big problem with the gamegear was battery cost. Fucker was expensive. My mom sold my gamegear after like the first month and got me a gameboy instead.

    >maybe one day people will port gameboy games to gamegear to show what could have been.
I've been goofing off with Opus and found out porting the GB(C)'s music to SN76 is 100% possible. (Including imitating its exact square duty cycles and waveform channel, though it costs way more cpu than either using periodic noise as bass or forcing low square SN76 notes in software.)

    >>12899665
None because the Game Gear died by 1995.

As did the Game Boy for that matter, but Pokémon revived the GB while nothing revived the GG.

Harry Potter could have been the Game Gear killer app...

    lol

battery life mattered. if the system had 2026 batteries it would have been a massive success.

    >>12900216
    >by 1995.
way earlier in most countries. sega were competing against gameboy and lynx
    >Pokémon revived the GB
didn't need reviving. it was always a popular system
    >>
    >>12900248
    >didn't need reviving. it was always a popular system

Yeah, no, not really. Just look at the number of GB releases in the west between 95 and 98, and then check what kind of releases they were and how most Game Boy classics aren't from that period. You can also check magazines in 95 talking about game boy releases and being like "oh hey something for this dead platform; anyway I don't expect this to last in the upcoming years". The Game Boy Pocket helped a bit though but until Pokémon there was an entire period of time during which the GB was a lot less popular.
Then Pokémon happened and suddenly it was like "Hey here is Wario Land II!, 4 years after the first one" and "hey let's re-release Final Fantasy"
    >>

    >sega were competing against gameboy and lynx
Just the gameboy really. Linx had the same battery problem as the gamegear, and because of that acted as Parent Repellent which killed the console from day 1.
Your little shit would get maybe six hours of playtime off of half a dozen batteries. That shit bled money. Every parent would get a gameboy instead with it's 20+ hour battery life.

Technically the graphic hardware is incredibly similar, I kind of think Nintendo took inspiration from the master system. Lots of small pallets vs 2 big ones, gg can have a more colorful image but the gbc can have the same enemy with different palates to save a lot of memory. Some of the RPG's on gg look incredibly good.
A big difference is gb uses DMA to move graphics around vs the cpu on gg, makes you wonder if DKC would be possible on gg, particularly that huge animated tornado on that level.

    >>12900258
From the mags I've seen too but when they released that clear GB it looked so incredible to me and I had the impression that the screen was better. I first played a friends system with Donkey Kong, it seemed like a relaunch with a new generation of games while Lynx and GG were stuck with old stuff. Most of the games were crap but you most people only ever got a couple of games anyway. I refused to buy a GBC because it seemed weird to buy a system weaker that ones from ages ago.

A lot of JRPGs are pretty much use direction keys to highlight the choice and then hit A to select the choice, so even GBA games like Golden Sun might've been portable to the Game Gear.
While I'm at it, even turn-based games in general like Advanced Wars could've been ported over to the Game Gear and it would've still worked, theoretically speaking... right?
    >>
    >>12903668
    >Advanced Wars
    >>
    >>12903668
With a graphical downgrade, maybe, but that defeats the point.
    >>
    >>12900248
No, the GB died quietly in the mid 90s worldwide, and it was revitalized by the pokemon craze (and then the Gameboy Color was released to counter the wonderswan and the neogeo pocket).

    >>12900280
Lynx didn't just have the battery problem, it was so massive you could barely call it a portable. Also, fucking Atari.
    >>
    >>12903689
The WonderSwan and NGP were never any real threat to Nintendo. North America is the market that truly matters, not Japan.
    >>
    >>12903668
SEGA CD had a fuckton of JRPGS, GG could've easily had them too.
    >>
    >>12903689
    >it was so massive you could barely call it a portable.
That's why they came out with a 2nd, less bulky model. Atari literally went with the logic that "bigger is better".
    >>
    >>12900280
    >That shit bled money. Every parent would get a gameboy instead with it's 20+ hour battery life.
with volume low/off and med/low brightness.. 20 easily on a -decent- pair of batteries. was impressive.
    >>
    >>12903994
    >pair.
    cant delete/edit. +++++4 batteries.
    >>
    >>12899665
The Game Gear was long dead by that point
    >>
    >>12903689
    >Also, fucking Atari.
True, but it did have some fun titles and the tech was pretty nice for what it's worth. Nothing compared to the gameboy library and the tech is what held it back as a handheld experience too.
    >>
    >>12904002
So was GB pre-Pokemon, that's why I think the GG deserved a second life too.
    >>
    >>12904016
Then maybe Sega should’ve come up with a good game like Pokemon? What even is this thread?
    >>
    >>12904021
    >What even is this thread?
A multiplat thread. Imagine trading Pokemon from GB to GG.
    >>
    >>12904025
So you’re pretty much admitting that Sega couldn’t come up with their own worthwhile games.
    >>
    >>12904026
Yes, that's what killed them during the SMS era. It wasn't until Genesis that SEGA got decent 3rd party support.
    >>
    >>12904027
If a company’s own first party games suck, they’re not worth supporting.
    >>
    >>12904028
Famicom only had a couple games at launch, then Hudson gave it the boost it needed.
    >>
    >>12904030
Yes, strong first party Nintendo games.
