It was built for full motion video, something that was very prevalent in early 90's gaming. 3D ended up being the major innovation of the decade though and the PC-FX just couldn't compete at all there. They bet on the wrong horse and lost.
    >>
    >>12896884
It was supposed to launch in 92 or early 93.
Would have been ok, but 94 launch killed it.
    Please understand
My view is that through this NEC was trying to sell its V CPUs more than anything.

They should’ve waited for advancements in qte. Sony reaped the benefits and rebuilt the entire industry around it

Sad part is the Mega CD being an add-on btfo a lot of consoles.

NEC caught a case of the severe retards, and decided to sell the initially-planned Hudson-Kubota 3D accelerator as an add-on card.
Then they caught an even more severe case of the retards when they didn't produce a single unit. The only PC-FX product which features a functional 3D chip is that all-in-one PC card. However, no games use the 3D chip, because no dev had a kit featuring it.

    > My view is that through this NEC was trying to sell its V CPUs more than anything.

Probably, Virtual boy released months later and shared the same CPU as PC-FX.

    >No 3D GPU where 3D became a requirement.
    >No proper sound chip.
    >No normie games.
This is why it bombed, just using the PC-FXGA spec, include a YMF278B chip for sound and release Bonk 4:Bonk's Headache and FX Bomberman would've saved the PC-FX.

got delayed by several years. it's a pretty nice system - basically a proper pc-engine v2.0. its hardware is quite great but released waaaaay too late.

Did you know that the PC-FX relies on the same sprite hardware as the SuperGrafx from five years previous? There is a strict scanline limit of 16 sprites per line for each of the two sprite layers, and sprites are limited to the same 512 color palette as the PC Engine. It also utilizes the PCE’s sound hardware. Despite sharing most of the hardware with their previous console, the PC-FX is not backwards compatible in any way. A jap could get all this in 1994 for just ¥10,000 more than the PlayStation.

It's just too bad really seeing NEC fail so badly. The PC Engine was a pretty cool console. I don't know if the Japanese market at the time could have handled Nintendo,Sega,NEC and Sony all competing with strong systems at the same time. A 4 console market would have been very difficult to sustain without someone failing

    >I don't know if the Japanese market at the time could have handled Nintendo,Sega,NEC and Sony all competing with strong systems at the same time. A 4 console market would have been very difficult to sustain without someone failing
Why not? They have 110 million people. Each console can do a few million. But the real risk, and what happened, is one console dominates the rest and becomes the default platform. Then it has the players, and it gets the games because it has the players. The losing consoles have no players, and they get no games because they have no players

In its defense the last game First Kiss story later got ported to ps1 and later the ps2 .

As >>12896930 said, they released it too late. You have to remember tech was moving incredibly fast at that time
It's like if the N64 released with the same specs but at the same time as the Dreamcast

Wii was a different situation. Nintendo wasn't targeting the same audience as they were previously and tech under the hood aside the motion angle still had enough visible difference to seem impressive to the layman.

Doesn't help that the Game Cube was over powered for what it was and HD wasn't main stream until 2008.

Yet some 3rd party games looked worse on the GameCube compared to ps2 and xbox version for some reason .

The PS1 version is a downgrade over the original though. They took out the fighting mini-game and removed or cropped a handful of the more problematic CGs. They added a few new ones but they don't even match the style of the originals. They did expand the routes of some of the characters in the PS1 version which is okay I guess. The Dreamcast and PS2 versions came later which are both based on the PS1 version. The DC version has the highest quality artwork. PS2 version uses the same resolution as DC but letterboxes everything for some bizarre reason. Some of the removed CGs are present on the DC and PS2 discs despite not being used in-game.

    PC-FX > DC > PS2 > PS1

Most of what the PC-98 got was the same type of armature software that the IBM compatibles got, plus most PC-98 users were not gamers, they were used for office use such as spread sheets, CAD sheets, word and actual software (games don't count), not games hence the 18 million units sold over it's life.

Computers that were precisely designed for gaming like the FM Towns (a third of it's sales came from the FM Towns Marty) and X68000 didn't sell anywhere near as much, FM Towns only sold as much as it did because Fujitsu sold unsold stock to schools and because of it's 386 CPU was able to get a bunch of edutainment software ported from IBM compatibles for said schools translated into Japanese, it was also FMR (Fujitsu's business computer) compatible so software made for the FMR can work with the FM Towns (most FM Towns users outside of schools, the JSDF and the Marty used FMR software and ignored the FM Towns features completely).

The FM Towns was also bought by the JSDF because of it's similarities to IBM compatibles, plus unlike the X68000 the FM Towns had actual software (again, games don't count) (sourced either from IBM compatibles or the PC-98) so there was a excuse to buy a FM Towns.

The X68000 however failed because there was no software, only games, and the only software that it did get was Potemkin village software just so Sharp can legally sell it as a computer, it was also designed by their TV division as their actual PC division switch to IBM compatibles by 1987 (replacing the MZ series), normies saw the X68000 as a over priced toy, even calling it "A Luxury Famicom" (this was a insult) and the common statement for the X68000 during it's life was "Why should I spend over 300,000 yen on a X68000 when my 14,700 yen Famicom plays games just fine?" and "If I really want to upgrade the PC Engine is more then enough, the Famicom is still getting heathy software support so I'm staying by it's side."

Smaller discs. You can have the processing edge but it won't matter if you don't have memory storage.
    >>
    >>12905157
They could've had those smaller discs be multi layered (4 layers) to make up for the size.

    They didn't.
