/vrpg/ is a place to discuss all types of role-playing video games, including single-player, multi-player, and massively multi-player, turn-based and real-time action, western-style and JRPG. Does this mean RPGs are banned on other video game boards? No! /vrpg/ is just a separate board specifically focused on RPGs where discussions about your favorite games can thrive. Please familiarize yourself with the rules and remember to use the spoiler function where appropriate!

Shiren the Wanderer celebrated its 30th anniversary a few days ago, so lets have a Mystery Dungeon thread. Which Shiren game is your favorite, and what would you want to see in Shiren 7? And when the fuck is Shiren Asuka's translation patch getting finished?

Why do zoomers treat this as a hidden gem now? It's literally the negative elements of Morrowind and Skyrim with none of the positives.

I'm about halfway through Metal Max Returns, so far I'm enjoying it. The vehicle/on foot modes are kind of neat even if the game hasn't really combined the two all that well so far. Does the rest of the series improve on that any? I'd like the concept and the setting, but I don't think I'd want to play another barebones RPG in the same vein.

Red pill me on this game. I've run out of RPGs and want something to play. I remember playing this as a kid and dropped it in like an hour. All I remember is something about gay color orbs in combat. Is it worth trying again?

Let's talk about party-based dungeon crawlers! >What are you playing right now? >Any release you are looking forward to? >Do you prefer a fully custom party, or pre-made adventurers? In my case I have been playing Bard's Tale Trilogy, which is pretty simply but also quite fun. Been looking forward to Mystic Land which seems cool and perhaps a slightly less austic version of Grimoire.

Every thread about Tamriel Rebuilt looks more or less the same, that is >OP in the image is a map >some very high but incredibly unspecific praise And then the thread either dies or continues to bump limit. What I'm confused about is... has anyone actually played this shit? It seems borderline astroturfed but i've seen this threads for like 10 years so it can't be that. Yet I never see anyone discuss anything specific, like a questline they're really fond of. Compare this to how people discuss Skyrim, most threads would zone in on a particular quest/scenario and ask what the right choice was or what the designers were thinking. This is generally how RPGs are discussed (fallout new vegas also comes to mind, rarely do you see a thread that's just "man this game is so fire!!", it's more often something like "was siding with ceasar the best choice after all?" or some shit) and honestly, how media is discussed in general (when discussing a TV show, people will usually discuss episodes or arcs separately). I have yet to see anyone on /v/ or /vrpg/ ever discuss any content of this mod, just the mod's existance in a vacuum. What the fuck even is this? People talk about how the map is big, uh, morrowind terrain is just a ground texture and deformation, maybe some copy-paste vegitation, surely they mean there's content to that map right? So how come said content (quests) is never mentioned or praised? And I mean... are the quests that they added like the quests in vanilla? Because most of those were just "go to this cave and kill bandits" or "collect 10 mushrooms" types...

When kcd-III comes out, the series will become the single best immersive rpg trilogy ever. The fact that both first games use exactly the same engine is awesome. The continuity in feel is unequaled. They could have taken exactly the same gameply, slapped a new story on top of it and the game would also have been awesome. But no, they refined the gameplay, trimmed off some excess, expanded in interesting directions. Lets not even talk about the fact that there is zero competition.

So far the following balance tweaks and polishes will be in the next patch: >Morton has his ultimate item, the Puzzle Box >Papineau gets several defensive/healing and offensive skills that use cleaning items in your inventory >Calm Dan buffed, and the start of a stream gets more viewers based on how well the previous one did, however Beg For Money will reduce the maximum amount of viewers you can get >Dan's quest will permanently increase viewership >Sophie has increased ballistics and critical hit chance when hiding, and the damage of special marbles scales with level >Ambush will do more damage depending on how many status effects the target has >Coral Slingshot added to the flooded apartment: +45 ballistics and additional luck >All marble locations in the overworld will give special marbles in addition to normal ones, including the new slingshot in the flooded apartment >Hellen's Soul Feast will only target enemies, and both it and Soul Drain will be stronger >Massacre no longer removes the stalk status from enemies >Fallow Will will make weapon skills cost more STM >Unmask has been buffed to only hurt, confuse (40%), and stalk (80%) enemies, but costs 4 STM >Hellen is immune to the Soulless status >Grim Harvest does more damage, correctly applying the HP-reliant damage with the max health instead of the halved max health when the skill is used >Soulless is removed at end of battle; before, if a party member's soul was taken, they would mistakenly have 20% reduced stats forever >Grafting now revives an ally instead of healing them; health healed depends on Hellen's max health >Soulless and Soul Drain have new icons; Massacre uses the Kitchen Knife for the skill icon >Some of the beef in Lyle's bedroom is unable to be picked up unless you're starving, as a way of checking whether you're still on track for the Ascetic challenge (similar to the plant now only having the talk option if you're lonely). Ascetic Sam will give Fridge Horror the panic status 1/2

Not a single new or update about the combat. The most boring, tedious and slow combat ever. I wish it could become a Chivalry-like where your moves MATTER and there are dismemberments, but if it's not possible, at least a heavy deep update that makes it FUN to play. >SWTOR wants to be a WoW-killer >has the worst combat ever, tab-target >it's even slower than WoW's >WoW at least keeps updating it, SWTOR is been the same since 2011 >EA acts surprised when it didn't triumph over WoW >combat is 97% of gameplay >the other 3% is some cool story-decision, options that don't matter, cashslop, speed to missions but too slow and some other meh stuff >you can't even flight like in WoW Also, still it's NOT an open-world, unlike WoW.

Zoomer here. I really like older RPGs, some of my favorites being Wizardry VI and VII. Now the thing is, I often hear about Ultima as well and one I hear the most about is VII. I really like the style it has but I just have 1 worry with it and would want to hear more about it: is Ultima VII more so a "historic piece" game in the sense that it was amazing at the time but is nowadays a bland, generic RPG or is it a game that to this day feels unique and offers things other games don't? Again I don't mean museum piece as an insult just to clarify, basically just asking if I will get something deep either from story/gameplay/world that has not been done since.

Probably one of my favourite characters from the game. I really like Joyce, Sunday Friend and Trant, for their larger Moralintern worldbuilding. There’s just something about this guy, so alluring, quite so strange and sort of a beautiful mug. He’s based off of Tarmo Juristo, real Estonian activist, and Tarmo is also (Like Trant) a Martial Arts enthusiast (although Tarmo the guy might not be a recovering addict) I just have so many thoughts about this guy

You can only post in this thread if you own the BradyGames guide for Fallout 1. Only LARPing zoomers played Fallout 1 without the Fallout Official Survival Guide. Or think that it was made by PrimaGuide, which was actually for Fallout 3 (the best of Fallout classics btw). Fallout 3 > 2 > 1 > New Vegas Here's why: Immersive First-Person Perspective >True 3D World: Swapping isometric views for a first-person engine makes the wasteland personal. >Scale and Scope: The Capital Wasteland feels infinitely larger and more terrifying. >Visceral Combat: Real-time shooting completely eliminates slow-paced, grid-based movement. >Cinematic VATS: The Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System blends turn-based strategy with spectacular cinematic action.[Reddit - r/Fallout +4] Superior World Exploration >Organic Discovery: Landmarks entice players to wander, unlike Fallout 1's map travel. >Environmental Storytelling: Skeletons and locked terminals tell tragic stories without dialogue. >Dense Urban Centers: Exploring ruined Washington D.C. subways creates unmatched claustrophobic tension. >Unmarked Secrets: The world hides countless unique items, encounters, and miniature locations. [Reddit+4] Accessibility and Pacing >No Time Limits: Fallout 3 removes the stressful, punishing water-chip countdown timer. >Streamlined Systems: Leveling up feels highly rewarding without confusing classic tabletop clutter. >Iconic Audio: Radio stations like Galaxy News Radio give life to lonely treks. >Iconic Vault Intro: Playing through childhood in Vault 101 creates a powerful emotional hook.[Reddit - r/Fallout +3] Realistically, only the hateful Slavs of RPGCodex prefer Fallout 1 over Bethesda's masterpieces.

Only the bosses require engaging with mechanics, so when a dungeon has 10 floors you're just sleepwalking through 100+ trash encounters that have no meaning beyond "gives exp and money". So I'm playing the original Wizardry via the SNES port and loving it so far. I just discovered Murphy's Ghost so that has been really helpful to me and just saw online that basically everyone has been grinding it since the 80s lol. Anyways what I wanted to ask is, should I always just use the stables to rest? First off it's free but the 2nd thing is I read it lowers the risk of your character basically aging to death? How much usage of it would be overusing it and running that risk?

I’ve finished Act 1 in Pathfinder, mostly played to test builds and learn the game systems. I’ve done a lot of research on the Pathfinder 1E rules and decided to go with a Battle Oracle Angel build. I plan to restart the campaign from scratch, applying everything I’ve learned. I’m aiming to play on the Core difficulty, but I’ve seen many people say it’s not recommended for beginners—so, I’ve made a few adjustments (pic) to create a "custom-Core" setup. Do you think this will be manageable? Also, should I set enemy critical hit damage to weak or keep it at normal? Any advice would be greatly appreciated—thanks in advance!

"A free-roaming squad based RPG. Focusing on open-ended sandbox gameplay features rather than a linear story." "Be a trader, a thief, a rebel, a warlord, an adventurer, a farmer, a slave, or just food for the cannibals. Research new equipment and craft new gear." https://store.steampowered.com/app/233860/Kenshi/ https://www.gog.com/game/kenshi >Demo Link https://lofigames.com/ >Tips for beginners Learn to pick your fights, don't hesitate to run away and don't reload unless you die, any fight you survive makes you stronger. Building an outpost will attract trader caravans and hostile raids. Building one too early might be more than you can handle. Pressing F1 will open the tutorial screen. Mousing over the stats screen and HUD will reveal useful tooltips and additional info. If the enemies feel too difficult - get crossbows for your units. And don't be afraid of the RP autism - engage in it whenever you can. Let's play truth or dare. I'll start. Truth! What is your most impressive gaming achievement both inside & outside RPG gaming? I'll go first 1. Outside RPG gaming I can bury Mike Tyson without the passwording whenever I feel the need to entertain visitors (passwording matters BIGLY NIGLY. It is in fact obviously far easier to score free throws in-between games during practice sessions than performing the same in a heated NBA Championship Match to paint a clumsy metaphor) if you catch my meaning sirs 2. Inside RPG gaming (and about 100 times more impressive) I unlocked a Force Sensitive Character Slot in Star Wars Galaxies. I know guys, most of you anons here don't like playing MMOs, nor do I really. I too hate MMOing except for Lore-intensive RPGs like SWG, Tortanic and the ESO (ultimately crappy TES Lore but whatever I play it) related to other Lore crap for that matter. But SWG did the Lore right beyond perfection, NOBODY knew how to become a Jedi (or Sith) at launch, just as if we were truly living in the Star Wars Saga all desperately wishing we were Jedi-tier but had no clue where to begin. In that regard, SWG was the most Lore RPG ever. Peak Lore. No doubt about it! And leveling all characters on your top 120 JRPGs to 100 is no big feat btw unless your patience/autism count as a feats, no? Do not even bother daring me to post pictures of myself on /vrpg/ I'll refuse your wishful terms because a test thread is not worth risking doxing my Guild on 4chan. Anonymity is useful on my current mission

Skyrim gives you Ulfric as a premise and never pays it off, a man whose entire psychological weight exists in the loading screen text and nowhere in the actual game. You meet him twice before Helgen, watch him shout the High King dead in a cutscene you barely see, and then spend thirty hours hearing other characters debate his soul while he stands in his throne room giving you fetch quests. The civil war questline runs maybe four hours total and resolves by taking three forts, which means the most politically complex character in the game is resolved through the same loop as clearing a bandit camp. His trauma around the Thu’um, the capture, the torture, the Thalmor using him, sits entirely in a dossier you find in a Thalmor dungeon and he never speaks to it once. Bethesda built a man interesting enough to deserve this scene and then shipped him as a quest giver.

This is the only game I will ever shill. Its so fun and creative with good quests, enviroments, big memorable difficulty spikes like josaphene. Gameplay is basic but extremely satisfying, I just shocked dudes from accross screen for a lot of the game. a story/quest writing that was designed first and foremost to be enjoyable for someone to actually play than just something to think about. Ost is 10/10 accross the board, I put it above a lot of final fantasy sound tracks easily. Its so fucking good, I think the only actual bad design was making every enemy in the last hour practically immune to magic. But whatever I played a mage and got though it. Also like a couple jokes don't land, but whatever a good amount do and the cheesy voice acting is just great. I genuinely rank it as a top 5 western rpg, and you owe yourself to play it if you haven't.

Took me over a hundred hours and I still wasn’t ready for it to end, this game just keeps opening up, new sky, new continent, new crew member showing up on the ship and suddenly you care about them completely. Vyse is one of the best protagonists ever written because he never wavers and somehow that never gets boring. The world is so specifically itself, the way the sky works, the moonstones, the native tribes, the Armada bearing down on you with actual weight. Ship battles felt enormous every time. Fina’s arc hit harder than it had any right to. I’m still thinking about it.

I came up with some RPG class concepts... Which ones would you play? Are any lame? Open to interpretation or suggestion based on the info provided. Justiciar = Physics/math/universal law paladin looking to correct inconsistencies. Illusionist = Cocky magician who's magic isn't real, or is it? Nomad = Wanderer with weaponized portals (cut people in half). Abjurer = Runic surveyor mage, area based magic, leaning defensive? Berserker = Bonk of your choice. Syphon = Affliction doctor who transfers/converts DPS/HPS rather than generating/removing directly. Captivator = Weaponized beauty. Tactician = Battlefield Strategist (Athena mode). Botanist = Half Welsh druid, half scientist. Pacifist = Skiller/alternative game mode. Astrologer = Skitzo cosmic conspiracy scholar who might actually be onto something.

Why do people say this game didn't have enough combat? Did the dev patch it out later or most of the complainers never get to past Merredin? Anyway, i unlocked the open world and now kinda getting filtered cause almost every enemy now is more tougher than your character and with bigger numbers, they also often get first turn in combat and even have situation where i have one of my companions down even before they have a chance to have a turn because of that. Anyway, "moral compass" is one of the most retarded game design ideas in the history of vidya and basically forces you to play like you would play a Mass Effect - just choosing every renegade/hero option you encounter, just with 2 additional flavor of that instead. What the fuck did dev thinking.

i'm thinking of picking up ff5 pixel remastered how difficult is it? i'm pretty good at final fantasy and was wondering if i should set the boost mechanic to 0.5 immediately to have a good time or if the game is actually hard and i should just play it on default difficulty for my first run yeah i could play a rom blahablahblah but i think the reworked graphics and music are good in ff1/ff4/ff6 pixel remastered

tl;dr I'm remastering NWN2 OC and MotB from scratch. Not sure that it's the right place to post, but what the hell. I thought that NWN2:EE was lacklustre. It hardly fixed anything except for maybe Multiplayer and a few bugs. This doesn't look like $30 worth of work. Then I started wondering: what would an actual decent remaster look like? My first thought was using my modpack I created and debugged back in the day: better UI, custom portraits, better character sheet, better inventory, better companion AI, a bit of a facelift when it comes to textures and so on. But that clearly isn't enough. The big part of NWN2 is the original campaign, but it's buggy as hell and has a lot of cut content. IMO the absolute minimum for the remaster is to fix all of the known bugs in the OC. And it wasn't done. The next step is to fix some of the glaring campaign issues that are technically not bugs: for example, some of the influence gates are impossible to clear without the debug menu and your companion dialogue tree is static: you can ask one of your companions "Who are you?" in the final dungeon. Then the AI should be reworked. In fact, there is a must-have AI mod that does just that: your companions and your enemies are no longer dumber than bricks and you have a DA:O-like tactical menu for fine-tuning your companions. It should've been integrated into the main game, but alas. Add all that and I see myself paying $30. So I decided to remaster it myself. If I, one idiot with an LLM, can do it, then Aspyr is officially incompetent.

More a thread to explore my autism to justify playing a mage. Anyway what do you usually go for? For me, I consider >Warrior Beat class for an adventurer and you can come up with plenty archetypes for it, though I only really like a sword and shield knight or a Gimli type dwarf. Also most boring in terms of gameplay mechanics >Thief My favorite playstyle but it's often hard to roleplay and games rarely allow for the character type which I'm interested in. I like to sneak around as an assassin because I'm a pussy but realistically you rarely are in a position to assassinate, you end up fighting all the same. Also not a lot of games give you the option of being a court assassin intrigued in political dealings. I can only think of Morrowind, I guess TES in general. >Mage The most fun to play in terms of versatility, but if you're not an arch mage with his own castle I don't see how to roleplay one. Mages I don't really consider to be the adventuring types. I'm also very autistic and I don't understand how flame conjuring works, not to mention that driving a sword through someone is much more enticing that chucking fireballs at them. And I mean shouldn't they burn people alive rather than the kinetic impact hurting them? I also don't know maths or sciences so I'm not sure that mage best corresponds to my personality. I do read though... Anyway, discuss

How would you design an rpg where each npc is a real character and has it's town story? Let's say I want to make an island with like 3 towns and 512 npcs. How would you make it? My plan was wirting like archetypes and pre planned story chapters, something like writing 10 stories of 10 chapters, and then randomizing the details across the npcs. Like Story 5 + Episode 8 plus the character sttats means, he will behave like Lancer type 3 and use agressive type 2 dialogs.
