Final Fantasy VII is not exactly cyberpunk. The aesthetics are completelly different from Shadowrun or Mad Max
Going out in missions through Midgar was like I imagined it was to go through my nearby big city at night. The added technology helped the situation, but didn't create it.
>>4136498Though it wasnt, obviously, like a real Spanish city at night. I don't know where to go to find this Midgar sensation.
>>4136500The fact that you can climb to the shinra tower says a lot. That climb made midgar feel physical. Its symbolical of the separation between wall market and their rulers. You have to manually explore the slums and take your effort undertstanding them, then, as soon as you feel at home in there, you must push forward. You know shit is getting real.
>>4136507Maybe part of the greatness is that we never fully get to explore it. And a lot of it is witnessed in a rush, chased by shinra soldiers.
>>4136509And the impact on the world is different as in cyberpunk dystopias. Its not about mind control or dehumanization, but the focus is more on heavy industrialization. A monopolized one, exacerbated on itself and more in contrast with a, to that date, naturalistic world. What are other settings where this happens?
>>4136515because I think that only Amegakure from Naruto gives me a similar feeling to FFVII and midgar. Not Gunnm, Cyberpunk 2099, Shadowrun or Blade Runner (I said Mad Max in the OP but i meant that one) This is different.
>>4136491Shadowrun is part cyberpunk and part fantasy. Mad Max is not cyberpunk at all, it's just post-apocalyptic.FF7 barely has a defined setting. Like Shadowrun it's got fantasy and cyberpunk elements, but it's far less of a coherent setting and more of a random mashup. It's got no real lore or worldbuilding that serves any purpose other than to prop up the plot, and completely fails to pull together its random patchwork of genres and locales into a believable world.
>>4136491You will never be Japanese.
>>4136491Cuckold clown that you are, ff7 is a defining source of cyberpunk. Cyberpunk is a very young genre, mostly, if not always done wrong. Same with steampunk, almost all works slap some gears of brass colour onto shit and call it steampunk.
>>4136778>ff7 is a defining source of cyberpunkI r8 your b8 0, m8
>>4136491Dieselpunk/thread
FF7 is Kowloonpunk
>>4136491>>4136520It seemed to be late 90s atmosphere with more advanced robotics. >>4136856>DieselpunkNah it didn't have the post war vibe. It honestly was just the modern day at the time with mechs thrown in for good measure.>>4136498>>4136491>>4136500Looking at screenshots of the original after playing both remakes as well as Crisis Core's master is depressing. We truly saw the plight of those fighting for the planet in Redos as opposed to the original and we got a better feel for the level of technology.
FF7 isn't remotely cyberpunk. The technological theme of the game is the environmental impact of industrialization. There is no cyberspace in FF7.
>>4136491Ff7 and Star Ocean 2 have my favorite pre rendered backgrounds of this generation. Just absolute sovl
>>4136786>>4136856This board is getting as daft as the rest of the clearnet.
>>4137116>>4138890>focus on diesel-powered machinery, industrial settings, and influences from Art Deco. It often explores themes of war, espionage, totalitarianism, resistance, and the societal impact of technological advancement during this specific historical era. While the name implies diesel technology, the aesthetic also encompasses other industrial advancements and the cultural shifts of the early to mid-20th century.the game is definitely using diesel punk setting
>>4138927It has elements of it, but you could argue that all ~punk settings stem form steampunk, while cyberpunk is the only real standalone punk. I don't see how ff7 has more diesel than steam or solar or steel punk. Moons either copy their 800 year old narrative structures onto everything or mix and match stuff they stole form the west randomly under the banner 'cool japan'.
>>4137116>it didn't have the post war vibeDid you not play the game? There was a long war with Wutai that only ended like five years before FF7 began.
Seraphic Blue was inspired by this somehow.
>>4136491I thought it was makopunk or materiapunk, some variation like this
>>4140931>Did you not play the game? I meant the post-world war 2 boom vibe, Midgar was a depressing slum, with more of 90's Detroit feel, bygone eras of industrial booms replaced with desperation and poverty. >here was a long war with Wutai that only ended like five years before FF7 began.Wutai didn't seem that ravished you know? Upon visiting, it was in pretty good shape.>>>4138927>the game is definitely using diesel punk settingIt didn't have the 20's-50's vibe my guy, similar to that of Batman, Last Exile, Metropolis, etc. It was modern (at the time) a tad more grungy, with mechs thrown in for good measure. Heck, they had cellphones in the 90's for goodness sake.
