What is /vrpg/ opinion on Octopath Traveler as a series?
    >>
    >>4124715
8 different stories that go nowhere. Did not deserve the attention it got.
    >>
    absolutely fantastic voice work

the plot of each character path is nothing special

characters have almost no story interaction or dynamics with each other
    >>
    >>4124715
Needs way more if/then autism re: who is in your party and when but it's a solid 6/10 to me which is fine. I hope they get better at that in the next entry.
    >>
    Wasted potential.
The world is incredibly immersive, with amazing graphics and music, so I enjoyed playing the games overall.
But there are no real dungeons, so the gameplay feels missing and the stories are necessarily shallow due to the fundamentally flawed concept.

I don't care for it. The combat is decent, but not quite good enough to carry the games by itself, and everything else is half-assed at best.

The whole concept is flawed. 8 protagonists with 8 stories each spanning 4 chapters means you'll get 8 vapid stories with 32 extremely formulaic "town -> cutscene -> dungeon -> cutscene -> boss" chapters. I was exhausted halfway through and didn't finish. They should've just made something like FFVI or the Bravely games, I enjoyed those.
    >>
I really like it. And i like how briskly the first one plays. You're always moving, jumping around. Little dungeons, then a story beat.
Great music. I look forward to playing 2.

As others have said, the games would have been much better if they were more traditional in terms of structure. Both gameplay and story suffers from the formulaeic structure. I don't think that it would be impossible to pull off well, but I don't think that Squenix is the company to do it.

I guess you'd just end up with Bravely again, but two out of three of those games were good, so you're playing with decent odds.

its way too expensive to just dip toes into it. Skip but consider watching a silent lets play of the intro chapter of one or two characters you're interested in.

It hurts so bad it needs to stop
the games aren't good, aren't good at all
    all 3 of them, 1, 2 and 0
dialogues are absolutely cringe, sounds like it was written by a 5 years old or a reddit moderator.
    >>
    >>4134292
Wait there's a third one. Why?

I'm not poorfag. I can afford video games.
    >>
    >>4133349
Not really. If what you care most about in an RPG is vibes and immersion, they are absolutely worth playing.
They are just disappointing because the storytelling and (lack of) dungeon design doesn't even come close.

0 is their attempt at converting CotC's Orsterra arcs into a console game. MC (your avatar unit) in the gacha is replaced by the "Chosen One" MC Zero (there's no difference in the chapters) with a retcon story for them designed around a place called Wishvale in 0. Gacha rolling mechanics are gone for getting new units and you just recruit them via their respective requirements upon meeting them instead; they're new and exclusive to 0 other than the OT1 travelers that the director said was there mainly for fanservice/pandering and their existence in 0 is non-canon.
Except 0 is a fucking mess and more like an AU of CotC instead.
2's still the better game regardless.

Octopath 2 is the best one indeed. I found 0 to be my least favorite octopath game because of the overall structure, it felt like the usual rpg and not a full on octopath game. In a recent interview they mentioned octopath 3 and how they know that fans have expectations for that. I’m looking forward to getting back into the octopath format when 3 comes out, this time I’ll be sure to disable the depth of field in the settings.ini (it’ll probably be an unreal engine game)

I hated it and it made me mad. Partly it seemed like I was the ideal player, like I haven't played any FF past 6 and that sort of thing is very nostalgic for me so a "love letter" to the genre should be right up my alley.

I fucking hated how there's no banter, and everything is so damn symmetrical. I don't remember the details now, but it's like, every single party member's whole thing was just cookie-cutter, with the details different madlib style.
I had high expectations and then I was very disappointed.

    This, but about FF9.

inferior to SaGa in every feasible manner which is honestly impressive

I like the music, artstyle, and gameplay well I guess.
The story is giga boring though.

    >boring combat built around staggering
    >endless hollow dialogue
    >fake retro visuals
    >shallow soundtrack that only aims to be catchy or epic
It takes all the worst parts of JRPGs and puts them into one game
