I like the game, but yeah just how has it survived this long? Do people sub? Or pay for those passes?
Back in the day they had those dragon amulet subscription thingys right?

This was the game where if you were somehow too poor to pay for Runescape, you played this.

back in the day i paid the one-time $25 fee to be an x-guardian because i genuinely liked the game
it was kinda unique for having turn-based jrpg combat with mmo-style live-service events & dailies
and because it was a browser game i could play it at school
i have no idea what type of person would still be spending money on it in 2026 though

Adventure Quest and Dragonfable exist solely because Artix doesn't have a reason to end their support, they don't cost too much to maintain and they still make a little money because they have dedicated small communities so he leaves a skeleton crew to continue updating them. Epic Duel wasn't actually made by Artix Entertainment, they bought the already being developed IP and hired the developers to run it essentially. AQ3D was a somewhat unsuccessful attempt to move on from AQW, but never quite took off so it's in the same boat as Dragonfable of not being the main focus.

AQW is the cash cow that the company runs on while the others are just smaller income streams. Furthermore recently AE did a kickstarter for a mobile/proper pc release of AQW that reached like 2 million dollars or something like that, so in essence they're surviving solely because of their community supporting them so much.

Can he just do a mobile release of AQ too?

Huge, strong and dumb as a rock this estranged evolution of frog lizard are being pushed from their natural habitat in the Zamboo swamp region for some unknown reason, making them threats to nearby towns and farms.

Learning how Dragon Fable and Adventure Quest were developed was interesting. Apparently it was mostly volunteers or barely paid, highly dedicated freelancers who were often high school and college students given a basic and vague design document and told to have at it. Or even sometimes just being given total creative control. These kids essentially crunched-timed the weekly updates on a continual basis which is why they are so wildly inconsistent in tone and quality. It's kind of beautiful though. These games are undoubtedly pretty ugly and rough and tedious, but I can't help but appreciate the sheer amount of amateur effort and love actually congealing into a playable game. AQ worlds I have no clue about. I was already too old for it when it came out. Seems to be formative elementary and middle school memories for a huge chunk of people though. I was surprised to discover just how popular it ended up being.
