    >strongest points of JRPGs

Amazing aesthetics. Artbook fantasy game hit after hit. Final Fantasy. Xenoblade. Trails. Romancing Saga. Octopath. Granblue. Atelier. Etc. In contrast, the last high production value artbook fantasy WRPG of the last 20 years were WoW and GW2 expansions, and maybe Kingdoms of Amalur? Most WRPGs do not look good or something you want to look up a lot of fanart of.

JRPG characters are *generally* pretty likeable (Kuon from Utawarerumono duology not withstanding). For WRPGs, I struggle to think of many party members that I actually liked. A couple Banner Saga characters, Garrus, and... ??? Definitely no one from Dragon Age, KotoR, Dragonfall, BG3, and so on.

JRPGs absolutely nailed the audiovisual presentation of combat. The camera framing of the battles as characters dramatically pose on one side of the screen with the huge, detailed big bad monster in the back. Cutscene attacks that make characters look cool as they shout names. Cool spell VFX. Etc. Also memorable powermetal music playing.

UI often looks attractive, or at least not hideous unlike WRPGs.

Stories are generally heroic, WRPG stories are often very subversive or cynical.

JRPGs like to depict lots of young people, whereas WRPGs almost exclusively focus on adults.

JRPGs depict romance much better. They also often actually matriculate the relationship by the end of the game.

    >strongest points of WRPGs

So this is going to regard mainly sandbox RPGs like Morrowind, Mount & Blade, Kenshi and BG3. The games that let you kill anyone you want and align with whoever you want. Basically, the strength is just that. You do what you want. This does not apply to Bioware games or Shadowrun, as those shove you into a certain characterization (you are the heroic commander shepard working for the earth alliance. You are the heroic shadowrunner living in a district of berlin who is on good terms with the shopkeepers there) and prevents you from going off the rails. Those are just shittier JRPGs.

Basically, if you don't like a guy, you can betray or kill him. JRPGs generally don't force you to put up with unlikeable characters, but when they do it can severely bring down the experience. Case example is Kuon from Utawarerumono duology, the bitch shrew who is constantly berating you and beating you up all the way to the very end of what is a 170 hour long story, and she makes the last 20 hours of the plot revolve around her. There is no way to excise her from the game. Well with sandbox WRPGs, you can shut that down and avoid or eliminate what you don't like.

The other strength of simulationist WRPGs is that there is more gameplay than just attacking the enemy like in JRPGs. In JRPGs, you usually can't target the environment and cast a spell on it, can't cast "detect thoughts" on NPCs, can't lay down traps and use bait spells to lure people into traps, etc. Simulationist WRPGs get you sitting up straight and more involved and thinking of what could happen.
    >>
    >>4135789
I would also say that the agency provided by the simulationist WRPGs is pretty great. Being able to decide to be a good guy in Mount and Blade and fight bandits and setup businesses that rake in money slowly. Or try to go off and raid and loot a town for a lot of money. Being able to decide I want to make a ton of money in KCD and start robbing the smithies and the tailoring shops and going on a killing spree when I get caught.

This is the biggest load of retarded horse I have ever read on this board, and that's saying something.

    >Artbook fantasy game hit after hit
Let's look at the facts; only a few of them were hits, and they were carried on those singular hits for years to come, and many of those "hits" only sold well in Japan. Granblue is a primary example; huge in Japan, fucking nobody gives a shit outside of Japan. Atelier is another primary example of a local Japanese hit that remained virtually obscure outside of the country.

    >Most WRPGs do not look good or something you want to look up a lot of fanart of.
Wrong, they are the template that Japan has been copying, and has become synonymous with, namely with titles like Elden Ring and modern Final Fantasy copying more western aesthetics. In fact, it was western RPG's that built the entire aesthetic of what an RPG should look and feel like at its core and essence from its birth, with its style immortalized in timeless classic paintings that served as box art, pieces of pristine museum-tier art from the likes of Frazetta which Japan shamelessly copied wholesale by plagiarizing Frazetta's style outright. Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringers looks to be out-right copying Frazetta's Death Dealer painting (1973).

    >JRPGs absolutely nailed the audiovisual presentation of combat.
Combat is actually one of the weakest aspects of the traditional JRPG since it deals more with memorizing minutiae like point usage, speed scores, and damage numbers, filled with pre-canned animations that you spam endlessly becoming a boring and trite experience after the initial flashiness wears off, which doesn't take long. The spectacle was frequently compensating for a relative lack of tactical depth, and once the novelty wore off, combat often devolved into an exercise in repetition rather than a series of interesting decisions.

    >For WRPGs, I struggle to think of many party members that I actually liked. A couple Banner Saga characters, Garrus, and... ??? Definitely no one from Dragon Age, KotoR, Dragonfall, BG3, and so on.
That's because you're being disingenuous. Are you really pretending you didn't like Liara, or Wrex? Wrex is a more complex character than I've seen in, well, frankly, any Japanese game ever made, and the dialogue puzzle to calm him down so you don't have to kill him is one of the most tense moments in roleplay gaming to date. I can't think of a more pivotal scene in a video game series off the top of my head, and it has legitimate philosophical weight of whether you save him or kill him in defense.

    >UI often looks attractive, or at least not hideous unlike WRPGs.
You have to be taking the piss, JRPG UI's are fucking awful, bloated with info boxes, pointless numbers, attempting to arcadify every single mechanical aspect turning it from a roleplaying experience into a pachinko machine for you to solve. You're not playing a role, you're trying to maximize profit, with profit being XP or gold, or coins, or gil, or whatever placeholder currency they throw in.

    >Stories are generally heroic, WRPG stories are often very subversive or cynical.
Stories are some of the most subversive shit imaginable. Shin Megami Tensei? Earthbound? Persona? All incredibly manipulative and deconstructive. Compared with the likes of Dragon Age Origins, or Deus Ex Human Revolution, WRPG's are head-over-heels more heroic, even in spite of their multiple endings and choice-based resolution.

    >JRPG's like to depict lots of young people
In Japanese society, the desire to stand out and forge your own path through life is often viewed as a youthful impulse, to be outgrown as you mature and learn to fulfill your place within the broader hierarchy. In the West, individualism is deeply ingrained and personal agency is generally considered a lifelong pursuit rather than a phase of youth.
    >>
    >>4135778
    >>4135789
    CONT PART 3

    >JRPGs depict romance much better. They also often actually matriculate the relationship by the end of the game.
No, they abso-fucking-lutely don't. They are filled with lots of immature, naive, generic attempts at romance that are akin to what a teenager who has never dated someone thinks romance is like, because a lot of Japanese game developers are childless unmarried men, sexless too even. Romance in WRPG's varies a lot, but more often than not, the romances are more well known, because they are simply handled better. Mass Effect 1 is a stellar example of this, probably the best romancing ever seen in a game, along with Witcher 3. There's a reason everyone knows Triss and Yenefer, but the average gamer has no fucking clue when you ask them to name a great romancable JRPG character, not just some waifu they adore.

    >Those are just shittier JRPGs.
Reality does not reflect your opinion, as those games are much more highly rated than hundreds of JRPG's. In fact, there isn't a single JRPG that outranks Mass Effect 2...So does that make it the best JRPG ever made?

Overall, JRPG's are generally very adolescent-minded, both in marketed demographic, and in the naivety of their overall design and writing. They are stories that are designed to capture the interest of those who are going through rebellious phases, longing for purpose, while WRPG's are often more mature, aimed at allowing you to immerse yourself within their world, creating a role for yourself, and living out that role. Early WRPG's were more obsessed with dungeon simulations, but that was out-grown rather quickly. JRPG's have yet to out-grow the templates they still use from 40 years ago.

Wizard's Crown has infinitely more complex combat than that slop.
    >>
    >>4135571
A good JRPG has an immensely better actual story compared to a WRPG which are more about their settings. I can't think of any WRPG whose story has ever impressed me as much as Suikoden II's. Also you don't get as bogged down in overly pointless stat and ability shit that's just a holdover from tabletop games.

It really comes down to whether you value choice and builds more at the expense of overall story or overall story/characters more at the expense of things like choice and quests.

    >physical attacks determine hit location, injury severity, and bleeding; untreated bleeding can kill you.
    >actions have different turn costs, and available actions depend on movement, status, previous actions, and skills
    >defensive attacks, reckless attacks, guarding, falling prone, zigzagging, sneaking, and shield bashes
    >spells have casting times, ranges, and areas of effect
    >individual weapon skills, shields, and spellcasting improve independently through experience investment
    >some enemies can only be damaged by a particular physical damage type, forcing you to change weapons or tactics

    In my experience
    >JRPGs
+ Better characters, music, art, stories. Graphics age well due to art style. More variety in character archetypes, locations, and gameplay gimmicks. 10x more cute girls.
    - gameplay gimmicks are diverse but shallow. Overwhelming majority of JRPGs follow the "4 niggas in a row" or "grid-based SRPG" format. Sanitized to meet Nintendo's and Sony's console publishing standards (RIP Sega). Amateur translations result in extremely stilted/awkward dialogue. Localizations often censored and filled with added jokes/rewrites, making the games seem more childish than they already were.
    >RPGs
+ More customization, more immersive, complex mechanics, choices that matter, balanced difficulty, blood and adult themes. (Mostly) made in English, so no localization concerns. Some very cool dudes.
    - story typically suffers due to emphasis on player choice. Little variety in art style, all games pursue 3D realism. Focus on realism/simulation sometimes results in tedious mechanics like carry weight, hunger, etc. most women look like gorillas. In recent years, character writing and dialogue has gotten a LOT worse.
