Zoomer here. I really like older RPGs, some of my favorites being Wizardry VI and VII.
Now the thing is, I often hear about Ultima as well and one I hear the most about is VII.
I really like the style it has but I just have 1 worry with it and would want to hear more about it: is Ultima VII more so a "historic piece" game in the sense that it was amazing at the time but is nowadays a bland, generic RPG or is it a game that to this day feels unique and offers things other games don't?
Again I don't mean museum piece as an insult just to clarify, basically just asking if I will get something deep either from story/gameplay/world that has not been done since.
    >>
    >>4110912
Nope. It's a museum piece. Maybe it'll get you some respect points from nerds, and we all know how important that is to our self-esteem.
    >>
    >>4110915
Hard to put into words and this is all as an outsider, but to me some of the Ultima games seem like again they were marvels at the time but now are just barebones.
Interestingly though as you see I like the older Wizardry games, including V but that is because there is this really engaging gameplay loop and I love drawing the maps.
Idk how much Ultima offers fun combat, good map design etc. but even if VII still excels at one aspect even today I would give it a shot.

With RPGs I always wanna ask first cause they are bigger time sinks, if it was something like a Castlevania game would just give it a try.

Ultima VII is a good adventure game with a great story and an interesting world to explore that feels alive. It's also a sub-par RPG with poor combat, character progression and itemization.
    >>
    >>4110917
    >they are bigger time sinks
It has a fairly self-contained opening act (a murder investigation) that gives you a good idea of what the game is about. Try playing until you're allowed to leave the city of Trinsic, at least.
    >>
    >>4110912
Eh. Ultima games are the grandfather of RPG, but they're very difficult to get into. You'll have more luck from U4 onward, maybe.
    >>
    >>4110926
Oh that actually sounds pretty good. Might give it a try soon then if that's the case.
It feels like sacrilege at this point having played so many older RPGs but not a single Ultima so I really wanna see how it is.
Also I guess a little off-topic, but since I hear about Ultima Underworld often too, would you say giving it a shot is worth it too? Every time I see the Ultima games VII and Underworld always capture my interest most from a visual standpoint.
    >>
    >>4110932
    >Ultima Underworld...giving it a shot is worth it too?
Definitely, just for being the granddaddy of first person 3D RPGs and a good dungeon crawl in its own right.
I recall it having very clumsy controls, though. I've read that "Ultima Underworld Portable" has mouselook + WASD, but I haven't tried it myself.

BTW, regarding Ultima VII, you'll probably want to play it through Exult.

I didn't watch any youtubers you insufferable faggot, I just look at shit that catches my interest by year of release.
Who the fuck even talks about Wizardry VI that much? If anything it gets shafted in favor of the kinda worse Wizardry VII and VIII in a lot of discussions.
Hell, a lot of the Japanese Wizardries get more proper discussion than it.

He's a baiting, spamming namefag. Don't bother engaging.

So you opened up a list of “games released per year” and looked them up one by one to see if you’re interested in them. You’re weird. That’s so weird and cringe. You can’t sit at our table. Can you like find another board to post at?

    >>4111203
That screenshot contains multiple original, S-tier takes. You could post a hundred times a day for a hundred years, and you wouldn’t be able to produce something of similar quality.

Take your meds, unc. Shouldn’t you be getting married, buying a house and having children instead of posting on here?

    >I NEED ANOTHER MAN TO FILL UP MY BRAIN WITH HIS THOUGHTS ON A GAME I CAN PLAY MYSELF
Now, now, don't talk like that. Conservatives need authority figures to instruct them on traditionally correct and moral ideas. They are a very loyal people, like dogs.

100 years ago you would've been mincemeat

Will I automatically like older Wizardry games if I only played and enjoyed 8?

Skip Ultima and move on to all the Ultima ripoffs Japan made back in the day.

He couldn't handle the kino. In hindsight, there was a period where it seemed like every jarpig was using the Ultima style of combat.
    >ultima style of combat
Shift to top-down perspective, turn-based, from the older Ultima games.
    >>
    >>4112010
6 and 7, maybe. Can try console ports of the older games for a more user-friendly time.

I thought this was an interesting topic, too bad the thread is already dead

I'm the OP btw and started playing Ultima VII last week. I got addicted to it lol, came back here to check up on another thread and forgot I made this.
It's the most intuitive of order CRPGs I've played and my only real main gripe is the combat.
What surprised me though is how memorable the OST is too, wasn't expecting that. I'll post more as I get deeper into it.
    >>
    >>4110915
This guy is a faggot, ignore him. Calling Ultima 7 a museum piece is hilarious, since it has more depth than most modern RPG's, which just blind you with constant cinematics and endless loot or useless collectibles.

    >>4110912
    >>4110917
Try playing it and find out. The only thing that matters is the gameplay, and if you like it, then it it's good. That's how that works. There are bland and generic RPG's made today, right now.

The only actual "museum piece" I would say, would probably be Akalabeth, but even then I would still argue that it's a fine game. Gameplay loops don't age, you simply have to engage them on their own ground without comparing them to everything else, understanding how they work, and how it is designed to be played. Going into a game like Ultima and being disappointed because it doesn't play like The Witcher is fucking stupid, flat-out. That's the nicest way to put it. Ultima is a game that plays like Ultima, and should be compared to Ultima. Ultima 2 is a game that plays like Ultima 2 and should be compared to Ultima 2. Comparison amongst sequels is useful for fans of a series, and for reviewers to comment on what has been added or how differently it plays, but you need to approach every single game on its own. That is the only intellectually honest way of engaging with media.
    >>
Had they kept the step-based combat from Ultima VI in VII, it would've been an almost perfect (fucked-up projection notwithstanding) game.
    >>
    Such strange language
You're a zoomer, you are like 25-30. Why the fuck do you care what random men online think about you.
Just play the game. If its fun. Keep playing, if not move on

    > I like Wizardry V
Damm, that's brutal, i know is offtopic. But did you use a guide or map it yourself by hand? That game activeñy figths aganist the player attempts to map it, this is not to metnion the other bs.

Going back to topic. I think you will find some neat stuff in Ultima VII.
