>>

>is there any general info on how the secret santa works?
You fill out the form. This sends me your contact info, what you wish you would get for Christmas, and what you might gift your giftee. There are other ancillary questions we've added over the years as times and technology have changed regarding things like coomer models and 3D-printed stuff. This all makes it easier for me to match you with someone who seems like a good fit.

>budget
I think our original budget around ten years ago was $20US. Nobody has ever stuck to this. However, a lot of anons give gifts that come mostly from their piles of shame to reduce the economic impact (and make room in the closet, I guess), plus it's customary to add snacks and treats that might be regional.

If you look at our pastebin, there are links to the imgur galleries for the previous years so you can get an idea of what other anons have sent and received.

>how many anons participate
We've surpassed 40 signups already this year. In the biggest years, I swear we've had 100-120.

>I'm always late so I might participate this year

So there's this stuff that Greenstuff World sells that's like bluestuff/oyamaru, except that you put it in the microwave and it turns into a liquid and lets you get way more accurate molds. Has anyone tried it our and have any impressions?
>>
>>98866196
Give it a try and get back to us. I remember an anon did get or try it, but I don't remember what the result was.
I have a hard time believing it can stay hot and fluid enough to really get silicone level details of casting. If you haven't used silicone before, the benefit is that it really will seep into every possible detail (minus bubble traps) even though it's thick the surface tension is like zero, and it stays in that state for hours before it starts to cure. The second a warmed up fluid touches anything it's going to cool down and start to block details.

I'm sure you can get basic castings you could get with silicone putty though, and in that case reusable is probably fine.
if I had to guess, It's probably the best easy option, ranking them
flexi-mold > silicone putty > blue stuff
in terms of detail, but silicone putty has the distinct disadvantage of being one time use

Vince's recipe using GSW gold pigments and vallejo metal varnish works very well. Gives you solid coverage in one coat, sometimes two at worst. You can also mix in other golds to alter the tone, or silver for highlights. Not as convenient as a gold straight out of the bottle, but it's honestly fun messing around with

I tried it last year or something. I was not very pleased.

First of all, it's pretty problematic to use. I was not using microwave but water heating (bain-marie) and it is a pain in the ass to maintain temperature around 80C because apparently 100C and above will damage it. By the way, I recommend to cut out fragments and put into smaller containers, it's much easier that way. Once heated, it behave like honey, so highly viscous, pouring it to avoid bubbles is much harder than advertised, it also cool down rather fast. I would also recommend to buy and use some plumber tape, first try with casting box ended with leaking. I tried using what GSW recommended as casting material, UV resin but apparently Fleximold was not transparent enough since using UV lamp far longer than recommended ended up still with partially liquid parts. Also, repeated use made mold itself lose gloss and transparency, obviously breaking down too. What else I could use instead of UV resin, I don't know. GSW claims that nothing waterbased can be used, since it would apparently leak into mold itself, so this funny acrylic resin in powder is out of option. Miliput or other solid material as well, since mold is flexible like silicone. Other resin types maybe but I didn't want to keep experimenting and buy more and more stuff, not to mention that if I would get two-part resin to pour in, I could as well just use tried and trusted silicone.

Only positive I found is that it indeed copy exact shape pretty well. Maybe I would once get back to testing it but I don't have high hopes, especially after finally getting good enough results with blue stuff casting.

There's some pictures on Element Games which I use and a lot of sets but they look good, Holy White looks really good in that it's like a less purple/blue Glacier Blue near white.
>>98867501
I actually do have a label printer and I really fucking like using it, is that a sign of mental dysfunction? Only issue right now with mixing is actually finding a good mix, I've tried using Glacier Blue as a base for a nice bluish white but it's got purple there as well and any time I tried to remove the purple from the paint with a opposing colour the blue also leaves as well.

Thx anon! The purple cloth recipe is hard for me to remember cuz it's the result of a lot of failure and experimentation that started half a year ago. I began painting contrast over a zenithal but it looked like ass. Then I tried using normal paints but it still wasn't looking right. Ended up using oil paints on top of everything, not a wash like I've always used oils before, but actual thick oil paint blobs smeared around until it looked nice. Left them to cure in a sealed box for 4-5 months before I finished them with normal paints.

>Are primaris on 40mm bases now??

Mostly Gravis, but generally speaking many (though not all) character models these days fit on a larger base than the rest of their army. It depends™, but you get shit like a Terminator Captain based on a 50mm disc like Abaddon when the rest of his squad are on 40mm ones. I'm guessing it's done to better mark them out on the table, or just giving an excuse to have fancy tactical rocks.

30k did it in 2.0 initially (ie plastic Legion Praetors, of whom are huge compared to their range), but seemingly went back to match the same base sizes as their squads.

I don't think it's fixable at this point. White is made of titanium pigment because lead of poison, and titanium pigment particles are relatively big. The only way I ever get white to go on smooth is though an airbrush.
>>
>>98869570
I can get an ok white on small areas usually, but the white i use went chalky this time and I had to replace it. It chalked up on another model too.
I also only ever get a good white through an airbrush if its anything larger than a shoulder pad or helmet

>issue is for main colours of armies I ideally want something I can just have a consistent, repeatable scheme with the same colour
First post this army
Second you mixing the colour will be indistinguishable to the eye and not be noticable, but you'd know that if you mixed and has an army
>>
>>98869747
The colour I need to mix is actually only for a white, everything else is fine. Glacier Blue is close, but it's got this heavy purple colour to it, it's sort of reads white but not entirely. I've tried adding pure white to it, near whites, off whites, warm whites, but they all make it cover like shit and/or remove that blue tint to it so it turns too warm. I fucking hate how every near white or off white is warm rather than cold, I have a whole desk full of white paints that suck.
I've tried using a white glaze overtop of Glacier Blue to make it whiter but not so successfully and for my HQ units like a Commander it'll be pure white to signify their rank. Even tried thinning the Glacier Blue with White Ink but no real change.

Finished the dreads. The bases didn't work out like I wanted. I put a thin layer of coarse acrylic medium on top to give it a rough texture, but I didn't realize that it doesn't dry clear. WIP I need advice.
I plan to get some blank dice off aliexpress to print some decals on them to make some custom dice for FFG's Genesys game.
What are some things I can do to make sure the decals last longer on the dice or last stupidly long if possible? I'm not sure if varnish is gonna cut it.
What's some good software I can download to ensure the PDF decals print at the proper size?
Here is what I plan to print: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/304757/genesys-dice-diy-kit
I'm not sure where else to ask this kind of thing.

And lastly what specific decal paper that a paper printer can work with is best for this?

i have seen some /wip/ anons reach pretty damn high quality sometimes in just 3 years just by working hard on their craft and being motivated so i say atleast 3
>>
>>98872237
Big models are the most fun to paint, which will lead to you wanting to paint more, which will lead to you getting better.
>>
>>98872203
It's highly individual like with any artistic/creative skill. Some people have painted for 30 years and it still looks "tabletop ready" at best, while some people paint to a very high level in two years. Certainly helps if you have done other painting/drawing before picking up mini painting so you understand colour theory, light/shadow placement etc.
But it's hard to say. It's the same if somebody says "How long does it take to rip a Hendrix style guitar solo if I've never touched a guitar before?"
It won't happen overnight, but there's an ocean of free tutorials and incredible amounts of hobby materials to pick and choose from these days, so you could reach a level like that faster than ever if you stick with it and practice daily.

Finished four 2nd edition cactus clusters. Here are two of them.
I just need to finish three big Exodite buildings, three more small barbed wire pieces, then I'm done with the first batch of terrain and can move on to painting the minis.
I bought the Eons of Battle stl files for the ork brewery that I'm also doing to get more terrain, but I'm itching to get started on the minis, so I'll do the brewery afterwards.

I did the bases before I tried doing the trick an anon mentioned with using pva on both sides to cancel the bending out, but it you don't notice it from tabletop height so I'm fine with these being bent. They're just gaming pieces. I think they look cool myself and especially when they're standing grouped up next to the other terrain I finished. I think it's going to look great when it's all done and on the table.

Worked a bit on making a scale model look more sci-fi. Did not glue the net to the front yet, as I'm not yet sure if it's a good idea. What do you think of the concept?
>>
>>98872203
Depends on a lot of factors.
Some people paint entire armies on their own for years and years, but have never even tried anything more complex than base>wash>highlight, so therefore never improve.
If you watch tutorials by high-level painters (or better yet, have a high-level coach), consistently try to improve your painting abilities, constantly try new techniques (even if you think you "aren't ready" for them yet), and paint for 10-20 hours per week, you could become a great painter within 3-6 months, and be placing finalist at golden demon within 3-6 years.
It's about consistency, a willingness to learn, and a willingness to grow from your mistakes.
>>
>>98872322
Thanks anon. Yeah for a moment they looked interchangeable with the terrain one of my brothers and I built as kids using cardboard bases.
I was going to buy something like that to use for terrain bases, but I thought I had spent enough money at the time and just thought fuck it and used thin cardboard.
I'm going to try the pva on both sides trick on the next three barbed wired pieces. They're the last cardboard terrain bits I'm doing anyway and look fine enough for gaming.
>>
>>98872203
I suggest start with unarmored skeletons from any manufacturer. They are simple, easy, hard to fuck up, and you can learn the fundamentals for painting on them. You can experiment with them as well learning how a base+dry brush will drastically change how a model will turn out.

don't wait until you're "good enough" to paint something. just paint it. "practice" minis are kind of a myth cause every mini is a practice mini and you should never be painting something as an exercise. you should be painting it cause it's fun. even a poorly done model that you think is cool feels better than a "practice' model that you didn't want to paint.

Finally used up my plastic glue so went to get another bottle from the store.
What the fuck is this? I didn't even notice the bottle is literally half the size, because they perfidiously hid it behind the packaging.

I've been using Vallejo primer for years, but I've been wondering if there are better options. It gets the job done, but it has a tendency to have micro clogs and sputtering after the paint has been sitting in the reservoir for a few minutes. Makes it extremely difficult to have consistent coats with no pooling.

Yes, I'm thinning it. Roughly 50/50 with Vallejo thinner. I've tried adding flow improver as well, but it just results in a poor finish.

Why would a scifi vehicle use Norman/medieval shields as extra armor, anon? Maybe cut your own armor plates from plasticard instead? You can combine armor types, too. Additional like slat armor, reactive, etc.

>>
>>98877660

>>
>>98877795

I figured that the microbeads could pass for futuristic reactive armour.
>>
>>98877818
NTA, but it's usually a good idea to google stuff you wanna make and then build your own if something grabs your attention
>>
>>98877874

Good point. I've thought that adamant arsenal has a good design philosophy for his STLs, but lately I've taken to experimenting with kitbashing and unusual materials for miniatures. The results are mixed to be honest, but I've found the process of brainstorming, trial and error to be enjoyable.
>>
>>98877888
It's your hobby, having fun is the most important part. That said, if you want to shit look cool, you generally should adopt the same approach with kitbashing and/or greebling as the masters of the art like Lorne Peterson and such. For every single part you should have a specific functionality in mind that's not only connected to the entire (functional) whole, but also is at least roughly built on what we know about the closest functional equivalent in the real world.

What it means, go check wiki about how ERA works, and then build accordingly. It probably ain't gonna be projectile/shrapnel-shaped things like the microbeads. If anything explodes near these, they will work as shotgun pellets and fuck up anything behind (and around) them, too. It's the same reason why modern tanks are all welded and not riveted - if shit explodes nearby, the rivets turn into shrapnel and have a tendency to go straight into the crew compartment to btfo everyone inside.
>>
>>98877932

Right. What if I use the net as backing for larger rectangular or square plasticard pieces instead? I mostly dabble in historical and fantasy stuff, so I'm bound to make mistakes when it comes to sci-fi.
>>
>>98877949
are there any examples of net like armor on any current or historical vehicles? does it look inherently cool or sci fi to justify doing it without reference to a real thing? don't just glue shit to your model because you have it lying around. come up with a vision for your project first and then look for materials you can use. you can imagine the apple in your head right?
>>
>>98878016

I've seen some pretty crazy modifications on tanks in the russo-ukrainian war.
>>
>>98878039
ok and what did they look like? can you make them out of parts you have on hand?
>>
>>98877755
NMM and normal metallics look really weird juxtaposed, but I get why you're only doing the captain.
>>
>>98876952
No, I meant Games Workshop should have made figures as good looking as Forge World instead of soft round minis with big parts of just bare plastic and lumpy edges.
Forge World was where all the talent was.
>>
>>98878180
Oh. Fair enough, I never looked into it.
>>
>>98878060

In this image you can see the cage is hugging the hull of the tank pretty closely. There is a gap between the improvised armour and the hull, but I'm pretty sure I don't have the modeling skill to make the attachment points both durable enough to handle during gaming and to be subtle enough not to be noticed from a distance.
>>
>>98878343
that's still obviously a cope cage though. just gluing a net onto the model isn't going to look like that. if you want to use the net glue some plants to it and make it camo netting.
>>
>>98876627

This entire post is a blogpost about my local comp, enjoy this pic of the model I took on the table.

The judge’s car is safe, barely.
So apparently it wasn’t actually Orktober themed just named that because it was in October because of the 9 paintjobs only 3 were orks.
I had it in the bag but the final entrant was a Brutalis dreadnought that was all nmm. Also one of the models was a daemon gate terrain piece that had a resin demon face coming out of the center with an LED light ring around it too. So I thought I was gonna be screwed out of the popular vote.
Thankfully I won the popular vote and the dreadnought got the Judge’s pick, but I was 2nd.
So I got $30, a poster, and I now have a painted mini for an army I don’t play.

do you think the warhammer crowd doesn't value modelling gimmicks as much as other communities? I'm talking about things like clear parts, water effects, and moveable/removable parts. I see plenty of kitbashing and sculpting but rarely things like dremelling out spotlights to replace them with clear lenses, even on golden demon winners.
>>
I think things like this are really cool but lots of times warhammer people will look at them and say "yeah but the paintjob is pretty simple though."
>>
>>98878933
When minis are meant for playing games with it kinda disincentivises many of the more fragile modelling effects, and when Warhammer minis are only painted up as shelf warmers, well, the style set by the game pieces probably has some tendency to linger. And on the top end competition side it seems that it's simply the style to do as much as possible with paint alone, with things like NMM and OSL being highly favoured, instead of the "scale model approach" of building as much as possible instead (the "paint it" approach also seems to be dominant with the fantasy/sci-fi busts&figuring painting community outside of wargaming circles, or at leats it was last time I visited a Scale Model Show).
>>
>>98878935
All that motion does is make it look like a turret, the arms need to do more than rotate up and down.
I appreciate the work that went into it, but the end result is lame.

>>98879013
>it's simply the style to do as much as possible with paint alone
yes that's what I have noticed. it seems like warhammer people will paint something as nmm that other types of modellers would try to cover with real metal foil or something. I wonder what the reason for it is.

>>98879027
you can blame gw's modellers for that since these things were never meant to be articulated.

The difference between the two crowds is definitely interesting. I'm in the "warhammer crowd" myself, but I entered into a small community that is something like 90% scale modellers, 10% miniature painters 2 years ago and have been hanging out since then.
In fairness, there seem to be precious few of those gimmick effects even in the scale modelling community when you're not looking at the top percent of hobbyists, most of the vehicles I see posted do clear windscreens and that's about it. Same as how most miniature painters will build the models out of the box and then paint them without much fancy painting technique as well.
From my perspective it's a pretty strange priority. There's a huge focus on seamlessly building the kits (something I could definitely learn a few more advanced techniques from), making sure to have the right historical shade of metal/camo, perfectly masking the clear parts of the cockpit, and then almost all of them will settle for a quick, flat coat of that colour and immediately move on to decals. There are plenty of people in that community for whom using a brush at all is a rare thing. The most advanced painters will do some weathering, but that's rare; highlighting at all is nonexistant.
Personally I don't really find a lot of the gimmick options work that wellin the final product. Clear parts and real lights should logically be more realistic, but they end up contrasting with the nature of the rest of the build where a well done stylized paintjob instead blends in and enhances it. Picrel is my first (and so far only) military vehicle that I've done, and I much prefer the (simple and really not realistic at all) effect I've done on the cockpit windows over if I had left them clear with a visible cockpit inside.

Again, it's a very interesting difference in priority between two crowds that should have no reason to do things differently. I think ideally both sides could stand to adopt some ideas from the other.
>>
>>98878933
>even on golden demon winners.
Golden Memeon stopped rewarding creativity decades ago. It rewards technique that's adherent to the Current Day Standardized Method(tm). Creativity, imagination, and other things like that are marginal at best for both attendees and judges.

Demon is a marketing event for GW first and foremost. Then there's a powergap, and then, maybe, it's a painting competition for people who prefer a specific method of painting.

I don't think competitions are necessarily a good thing when it comes to scale models or miniatures, but generally speaking, something like SMC (picrel) or SMW is imo much more sensible to watch than Demon. Especially since both are also open to fantasy and scifi minis. Afaik, Erik Swinson won SMC a year ago with really cool gobbos.

I think the difference is how much you value realism. your paint job doesn't look real, it looks like a painted model. for many people the ultimate goal of scale modelling is to make your model look like a real object that has been miniaturized.
