Reposting my nearly finished Dreadnought
>>98854232Arms and sarcophagus are swapable
Holy shit, I didn't expect my hands to hurt so much after painting with airbrush, I had to stop simply because I couldn't control trigger anymore. Plus having to keep it high all the time to keep space between desk and air cable. I still wonder why airbrushes have trigger at the upper side instead of, by default, on the lower, like one would expect from "spray gun".
>>98854419You can usually set the trigger pressure needed with most better airbrushes.
Some more progress on this Land Speeder
>>98854439There was a meme image (>>98827874) made from thisa few threads ago, but the position of his fingers reminds me of Jim Holloway's illustrations for the Vrusk ("Bugs") in Star Frontiers. Vrusk have five fingers situated radially around a central palm.
>>98854419there are pistol grip airbrushesthere are also handles for the usual top trigger ones
Okay, maybe I'm blind or something but to me, she looks exactly as if I would simply spray dark red over black primer, instead of spraying white over black primer in this whole "zenithal highlighting" style and then same red shade.
i ordered my first pigment powders and im looking for any tips how to use them do i just paint the dust on and leave some on there and spray varnish over itor do i need to use some adhesive, in looking to make slightly dusty tanks with somewhat rusty tracks
>>98854755Yeah, the differences are minor. Don't bother with the zenithal meme unless you're using contrasts or similar transparent paints. What you can do, is basecoat in red (for example) and zenithal with a lighter red or orange to easily establish some basic shading on your main color.
>>98854770Pigments can be used in LOT of ways. Dusting it straight from the bottle is fine, but you need to fix it, if you plan on touching the model. There are dedicated mediums for that, you can also mist it with white spirit, too. Though expect the fixed thing to look different than unfixed one, that's the nature of the beast. Enamel washes are imo better for rust. There are even dedicated washes for tracks.
>>98854775Yeah, I simply saw most of "big guys" on YT frequently doing this kind of zenithal with white first, even H&S shows this on their videos. I wanted to test myself if this really makes a difference and turns out it's not. Like you said, spraying one, darker shade first and then much lighter in thin, controlled manner, does much more.
>>98854814I think they just do it because it looks nice on video.
>>98854770if you spray varnish you will blow some away but any method you use to fix them will somewhat dim the effectand contrary to popular belief ipa doesn't fix them, neither does thinner, the best way is to get actual pigment fixeralso, if you are only looking for rust check out dirty down rust, it's great, however it reactivates with water so you need to seal it too
>>98854834DD Rust is great for completely rusted out shit, not for tank tracks.
>>98854755zenithal has two purposes, one is allowing you to see detail better and plan your painting and light positioning and two, if you use transparent or diluted paints you can get a quick gradient on you basecoat, if you are going to apply a full opque coat anyways that second point is mootthat said that model looks like it has a subtle differences in some places due to it, red is usually fairly transparent
>>98854854>if you are going to apply a full opque coat anyways that second point is mootSo is the first point, 'cause you're just painting over it. The planning phase can just as easily be done before you prime.
>>98854791>>98854834>>98854840so basically if i dont need that actual grainy dust effect i might as well water down some acrylic earth tones and be done with it or just dust around and leave them like thatbut thank you this has been most helpful
Reposting my finished diorama, this time from the back.
>>98854881>The planning phase can just as easily be done before you prime.not quite, the extra contrast of a zenithal let's you see detail a lot better than a bare surface or a full black prime, it's hard to see detail in some materials, like metal models or some resins
>>98855014i still like the wool sock but those fuel drums and canisters pop little too much and honestly look pretty bad compared to everything else
>>98854962>might as well water down some acrylic earth tonesI would advise against that. You can mix pigments with water, but it's pretty tricky to make it look good. And it will still need fixing afterward. Though you can airbrush very thinned regular acrylics as a base for further dusting/mud/etc. effects. This is in fact a common way of doing it > airbrush a highly thinned down tan earth or something to emulate dust/dried mud, and then start applying darker (enamel) tones in smaller amounts for fresher stuff. If you want as simple as possible earth effects, I would again shill enamels. AK make great ones. Anyway, Nightshift is excellent at this: https://youtu.be/IwI80Bv9BGk?si=oFS32NPm8roNMUwg&t=1232Time mark included, it's a very simple technique that you can do yourself. And it looks great.
But overall did it wrong - left oat guy was supposed to be dark blue but applied too much of light blue over "dark Prussian" while guys on the right were supposed to be more like "steel blue" shade. In factz sprayed TTC "Cold Corpse Blue" and "Wolf Grey". Ended up, well, just grey.
>>98855040Shine a lamp from above, same effect. The actual shadows will show you the shapes.
>>98854197sup wip Finally managed to paint this simple kitbash I put together a couple months ago. Not painting/browsing a lot this period sadly, but I do plan to eventually build an assault terminator squad next
>>98855135>Sergeant, see this heretic?>I don't want to.
>>98853438>Thinning paint much more than what video tutorials often recommendI've been telling you to that that from the start. forget about what jewtubers tell you just thin it until it sprays right and then write down the ratio in a notebook so you can reference it when you use that color the next time.
>>98854755how many coats of red did you spray? you can clearly see the tactical box thing is darker than the hair but you can still see white on it so it looks like your coverage was uneven.
>>98855200One coat, also "white" on box is just visible non-primed surface since mini is made out of metal (I don't pay attention here since it's covered with metallic paint anyway later). So it's darker probably because it barely received any paint.
I'm gonna have to do much shading in-between all those god tiny metal pieces and crevices. God damn it.

>>98855014I think you left your lens cap on.
>>98854824That's my thought too. It can be hard for viewers to read a solid black or gray or whatever color model. But a quick zenithal makes all the little details pop and look really nice on camera.
>>98855574With black primer i always liked a zenithal even to see it in the hand a bit better and understand the shapes easier. I mostly prime with grey now since i paint opaquely these days though
I didn’t post any pics of the Ork himself due to technical difficulties but now everything is at least glued together so I can get down to finer details.
>>98855172lmao. Here, have that sergeant's POV for you>>98855298Thanks man. Still debating whether getting normal assault terminators and customizing them with half tabards and chains, or just getting deathwing knights, sanding off all the DA regalia and have termies with a more elaborate, gothic armour. Still not sure if I prefer the aesthetics of the classic termie helmets or the knightly ones from DW.
I really like the green on this guy's sash and other decorations. I'm gonna try it on a Sister's robe and see how it looks but I'm not sure what paint would get me closest. Maybe PA or Vallejo jade tones?
>>98855751Don't get stuck on names. Just look for a mint green.
>>98855801Can't say I'm into furfaggotry but good job i guess.

>>98856757Sorry, dunno. I'm not santa.
I didn't manage to finish the crew on time for season 2. but at least they're primed now.
>>98856804Oh sweet the edgerunners minis. How do they feel in terms of quality? Also could you please post a size comparison with some common model?
>>98856846They're awful and I hate them. But I hope I can at least paint them up nicely. They look okay from tabletop distance. If you saw the posts complaining about siocast a week or 2 ago it was me.
>>98856865What's awful about them? I see some particularly pronounced mouldlines for one thing. Are they made out of cheap plastic? Are they actually just single-piece models? I can also see those huge ugly pegs on the feet.
>>98856874They're virtually impossible to clean up because of the type of plastic they use, you can't realistically sand it. Mold lines aren't THAT bad on them, but there are some annoying ones. They are all single piece, plastic cement also doesn't work or that would have solved the clean up problems for the most part. You'd probably want the pins and to drill the bases since the feet are pretty tiny. These bases are all separate, they come on blank bases (but that's fine, I just wanted nicer display bases). My biggest issues is the faces are pretty mushy and low detail. It's going to be really hard to get the eyes and mouths to look right.
>>98856885>It's going to be really hard to get the eyes and mouths to look right.I believe in you, anon. Knock that shit out of the park.
>>98856885Can you do a size comparison with another model (like a space marine or something maybe) so I can get a gauge on the size of the model and the size of the face? I've been curious about buying these because of the release of the second season, if the models look mostly fine I'd be tempted to recast them all in resin and try to resculpt any fudgy details.
>>98856898I will get you an uncomfortably close up photo of a GW face next to Rebecca's and/or Lucy's face. Hold on.
>>98856747no it's pull for air pull harder for paint. some of them have separate adjustments for air though to dial in the spray pattern.

Scholars and Barbarians of /wip/, what is the best way to paint a sword?
>>98856945Oh fuck I forgot about that!
>>98856947Depends Best way for a competition piece? NMM out the wazoo, all secondary reflections painted in. Best way for the tabletop? Metallic paint with some shading and weathering.
>>98856947A plain metal sword? Black undercoat, dry brush with silver,
>>98856947A way that contributes to the story a mini is trying to tell.
>>98856885I remember I bought some malifix minis once, great sculpts but the plastic was some abominable shit, impossible to clean mold likes, fucking unworkable
>>98855449Why would he use his chainsword?
I also did not care for siocaston the main parts of the model, it was too hard for realistic cleanup. scraping lines was ineffective on outer parts like sword blades, too soft, allowing it to go bendy, could not straighten out weapon heads on 2hersentire mini in one piece, including baseI swear the first layers of paint went on different as well, despite priming in the same way as normal, but maybe I did something wrong. (on 40 separate minis...)
>>98856892Thank you.>>98856898>>98856968>>98857004So, they're not like BAD. and for tabletop I think they're good enough and would probably take a simple base/wash/drybrush really well. I wouldn't want to work with the plastic again though if I could help it.Anon reminded me, there are no swords which is nice, but there are some thin spindly parts, and that makes the flexibility nice since they don't break easily, but also the feet on some of them are kinda fucked up and bent and they don't stand straight if they're flat on their feet. I tried bending them with some boiling water, but it wasn't hot enough for them to deform and keep their shape. I realized I only had this eldar head on hand to take close up with rebecca. I don't like the kind of faces where they sculpt in eye detail instead of letting you paint it on. But it is what it is. I'm sure I can make them look alright, I'm not going all out on them I just want a decently painted edgerunners crew that looks good as a group.
>>98856874>What's awful about them? I see some particularly pronounced mouldlines for one thing.>Are they made out of cheap plastic? Are they actually just single-piece models?Yes, oh god yes. They're a REALLY grainy Siocast, they feel almost like that awful corn plastic. This is post-cleanup and you can see how rough some of the models still are. The medic team pilot in the center has an extremely retarded mold line across her face that was particularly bad to clean. I also got a mold-slipped model but their customer service refunded that one. I'd legitimately rather work with mystery meat Chink resin recasts than this shit, especially at $5-6 per model.

Overall, I only see red sables at any shop I paid a visit, only saw few of explicitly named "kolinsky sable" brushes that however cost fortune, no point in ruining them with mini painting - even when cleaning, each and every single one of them start to lose sharpness after extensive use and cleaning, despite using only soap, shampoo and conditioner.

Why is every social media painting video Spanish Airbrushcore and black latex glovesloppa? They really fuck me off with what they're trying to go for, hence this post.>I will now show myself mixing paint in the airbrush paint cup artfully>I will use massive brushes on any basecoats to show off my le brush control>I will not put down a single solid coat of any colour at any point>I will try to do some ASMR bullshit when I tastefully spread out my washes/contrast/ink type paints>I will do OSL out of the wazoo>I will now shill my Patreon at the endI'm not even going to mention this new trend of "slop on [new product] and show how it self-levels whilst drying"I'm sorry but for 95% of miniature wargamers (and especially the lower intelligence GW drones) this is just not as needed as these algorithm chasers make it seem. Most people actually need to learn how to do solid basecoats, appropriate washes, and being brave enough to do highlights (and drybrushing where appropriate and not just as a cop-out), and then with experience getting faster at such things so they can paint armies in decent time. They need to be learning from people like Kev Dallimore and Peachy and Sonic Sledgehammer and maybe a bit of Vince V.Yet they are sold Patreons by Spanish Slayer Sword Winner #3482 as "aspirational" when they can't even post a miniature here that looks finished, like they're not even hiding slotta tabs in the basing material properly or whatever that else makes it look unfinished.

For basing plastic minis that come with a small round or oval piece of plastic under the feet, do you cut it or stick the whole thing on the base and raise the terrain around it? How about hollow bases? With metal minis, how do you fill the gaps when the metal bar doesn't fill the slot completely?
>>98858199I cut off plastic integral bases completely, with hard metals and delicate resins I might snip at it a bit to break up the obvious shape and remove massive excess material, if it's easy I might leave some little platforms under the feet.I use cheap wood or all-purpose filler from a tube for the biggest gaps and smoothing.
>>98858199i remove both puddle bases and metal tabsi use toothpicks to fill the slottas on bases that have themnot sure what you mean by hollow bases
>>98857876That's a glossy bitch
>>98858226she comes pre-glazed
>>98858199>With metal minis, how do you fill the gaps when the metal bar doesn't fill the slot completely?I usually cut off said bar completely and drill the feet. Usually cut the bar with wire saw since otherwise it's pretty easy to deform mini legs with nippers. In few cases where I didn't, I simply carefully applied texture paste in that place.
>>98858199I stick puddle based models in those hollow bases and just cover it up to the base rim with cheap texture paste. For metal slot bases I use extra super glue to fill as much of the gap as possible and then do the same with the paste again. So far I haven't wanted to put either of those types of models on a flat surface like metal or tile flooring though where that strategy won't work so well, but if I did I'd probably just replace the texture paste with milliput so I could sand it flat after.

Would you justify airbrushing an entire let's say chaos space marine model gold just for the trim? And then paint the rest black? Also I want to paint the gold with scale's necro gold but I've noticed they don't work well through the airbrush. What do you guys use as thinner with scale 76?
>>98857882This blud has youtube shorts visible instead of hidden
>>98858297Feasible if you only want to do panel infill instead, which is going to vary from model to model.
>>98858409>Would you justify airbrushing an entire let's say chaos space marine model gold just for the trim? And then paint the rest black? It's often recommended for minis with a lot of trim and yes it can be a faster if you plan to do single color panels with no extra work. If you want to do some blending/volumes though both ways take roughly the same time, at least in my experience.

Is it me or is this middle picture not Tabletop Quality at all?I'd say minimum Tabletop Standard is somewhere between the first "Fully Painted" and the middle image which to me is just basecoats with a finished base. Even just a wash would make it more finished.Reading the actual text though it says Warhammer World want fully painted miniatures closer to pic 1
Didn't want to spend more than 3 hours on those so I rushed the details but here they are nonetheless. My printer > GW's HR department.
>>98859047Middle plus a wash is what I would consider tabletop quality but I'd still much rather see the pictures version than grey or single coat of primer
>>98859064you sure epically trolled those pesky lefties that live rent free inside your head
>>98859089Indeed I did, but I only did it now because I need them for the current Mordheim campaign I'm playing using the Lustria supplement.Still happy to own GW any day though.
Barely touched and paint started to fall off. I don't understand, I cleaned (metal) minis before applying primer, either airbrush applied Vallejo primer is too weak or I missed something again.
>>98859151what did you clean it with? did you scuff the surface with sandpaper or scotchbrite?
>>98859064Pygmies are the Oldhammer secondary bait that stuff like Daemonculaba is for more recent 40kNice work tbqh but they need basing
>>98859211They're only bait for feminine retards with a faggy desperate need for virtue signaling. They're just normal for other people.
>>98859210Bath and scrubbing in warm water with dishwashing solution. No, I didn't scuff the surface. Thing is, I had no such problems before when spraying primer from a can (also Vallejo) over metal minis, could it be that airbrushed primer is simply too thin?
Has anyone ever abused the secret Santa system? Like sending a dog turd or cum sock or something? I know it's a long tradition here so it must be okay but I'm still hesitant to sign up. What's the worst/most nefarious thing that's ever happened?
>>98859522I got a home made candy dessert thing once. I admit I did not eat that.
>>98859522It's a federal crime in most countries to abuse the mail system. It would be simple work to report the sender to their local police.
>>98859522Every year someone try to lower morale by tales of cum cookies and other bullshit but consider this - both Santa AND you knows the return address, once the package arrives, because no postal service will accept package without one, including name and surname. >>98858306Based. >>98859827Look, the easiest way to spot a Warhammer kiddie is seeing someone freak out about puddle bases. Just glue the puddle down and base like normal. After basing the puddle is virtually indistinguishable, with the added benefit of being way more stable and quicker to glue down. It makes me chuckle whenever I see a Warhammer player laboriously and meticulously cutting off the puddle base because he's so used to Warhammer models gluing bare feet to a finicky base

I added mechadendrites and a light machine gun as a secondary weapon. I think I'll try fitting a chainsaw bayonet to the gun arm and the round shield from mkii assault marines. Tomorrow I'll work on the armour plates.
So doing all this stuff the first time and even with plenty of research in preparation I still got blindsided by something that doesn't seem to come up too often. The superglue vapors don't really bother me at the priming stage because it can be painted over, but I planned on painting my bases and models separate, and since you can't use plastic cement on painted plastic superglue is the go to. Can I really avoid the frost by keeping them in the open with a desk fan on them while the glue cures? Seems like it took about two days for the vapors to stop.>>98860175Well done! >>98860322What the fuck are you even talking about, you retarded sperg. Putting scale models or miniatures to glass cases is about as old as the hobby itself. Boomers in the 60s did this with train models, too.
>>98859283 It looks like it's peeling off at the primer level, I think I can see some bare metal. Not sure why it's not sticking though. Maybe not good weather or just a bad can of primer? Not sure if a double coat would help

>>98860222first of all you should never glue paint no matter what kind of glue you are using. even if you want to paint the part before gluing you should mask off the area that's going to be glued or scrape the paint off. second I don't know what the fuck you're talking about glue vapors. don't sniff your glue even if it smells like oranges. third if you want to avoid cleaning up glue spillover simply don't get glue where you don't want it to be. just like the thermal paste on your cpu glue will spread out when you push your parts together so you only need a tiny bit where the parts are actually touching.

Model I started working on again.
>>98860797Feels like it could use a little more depth but it's a good start. What model is that?
>>98860804>it could use a little more depthAgreed, was thinking about adding darker tones to the bodice and robe. I'll paint the vines first though since those are physically behind the model and naturally will provide depth. >what model is it? Not sure, it's a 3d print I purchased on etsy and i don't remember the name of the listing. It's not a great model though, total snapfest and all the vines came separate (most aren't attached). Looks cool though.
I'm a little melancholic that we have to witness the slow and painful death of not only 4chan, but the broader internet as well.
>>98860827If you mean the PHP vuln, that's already been patched by anyone that isn't tech illiterate.I've left my floating island to marinate on the bench for a while as I decide how many more details I want to put onto it at risk of overcrowding it. >>98861053As someone that lives in Australia, yeah. This is a rather embarrassing question, but how do you cut straight lines to plasticard? Currently I've taped the piece I'm working on to the cutting board, use a metal ruler and make multiple small passes before the final cut. Somehow I still bungle it. Is this just something you learn through trial and error, or am I missing some trick?
>>98861920Does your hobby mat not have lines on it?
What is the best means to removed crystalized cyanoacrylate superglue on a plastic model without damaging it too much? Traded for some secondhand models and a weapon snapped off in the process of stripping paint, seemingly not the first time either.
>>98861927It does, but typically the knife slips happen towards the end of the cut, when I am already lightening the grip on the knife.
>>98861975Are you freehanding the cut? Use a metal ruler as a guide for the blade.
I was going to post this the very minute before the whole site went read-only. Did some quick touch-ups over the piece, darkened a lot of areas. Decided to lighten the side of the bodice and paint black into the cloth behind to accentuate the waist. Lighting conditions were slightly different for this photo, the difference is quite pronounced in person.
>>98862077I think the issue with it is that the character is wearing at least 3 distinct pieces of clothing, but you have painted them all exactly the same.
>>98862077Yeah, at least paint the bodice as dark leather.
>>98862088Yeah, I'm not sure the monochrome aesthetic really worked out. I wanted to do it to accentuate her otherworldliness, but she ended up just looking RED. I'm not going to put much more effort into this model, it's 3D-printed and a bit of a snapfest. I'll probably give it a few more layers, then she'll just be resigned to a tabletop piece for the foreseeable future.
>>98862135(me) >>98862117>>98862088I appreciate the feedback on it though. I'm just going to take lessons from this model and do better on the next one.

The superglue will often flake off and shatter away from the drill point on its own. For any stubborn bits or big globs on other parts of the model? Hook the edge of the chunk of superglue with a probe or a knife, pray, and try to pop it off. It shatters easily and once it's globbed up the repeated reactivation and shrinking layers on top tend to loosen it a little
>>98862556orange is better for this kind of thing
>>98862581>>98862543Good to know, I initially sprayed two shades of blue in succession over black primer and later only added white (light grey in fact) lines for little decoration, somewhat lore-accurate too, edge highlighted and ran little drybrush, so I was little afraid they ended too simple but if they read okay, then I can move forward to the rest. So far "just" want to fill up few missing units I normally proxy with others, have two week left to small tournament at FLGS, hope I make it in time.
I finished the ork huts the other day and moved on to the four cactus clusters. I only need to base them today.I tried using a lower wider aperture to avoid diffraction at f16, but I still think the depth is too shallow at lower values for minis. I'm sure it matters more for normal photos or landscape shots, but I wouldn't use a 50mm for landscape shots anyway and I hardly ever go over f4 or 5,6 when shooting normal stuff or f8 for landscape stuff. But for mini stuff? I found f16 better, at least to my eyes.I think it turned out great, but they took fucking ages to do. Glad to move on to something I can finish faster.

>>98862556I hate how the yellow fluorescent look green too, but you can break the green hue if you add a tiny tiny bit of orange fluo to it.So one drop of yellow and then the tip of a brush's worth of orange blended in makes it yellow.Or if you use airbrush, basing it in the yellow and then doing an ultra thin coat of orange will cut the green hue from it and make it yellow. It's like when you have a skin tone that's too pink, you can add the tiniest bit of green to break the pink.
