This isn't strictly on topic for horus heresy the game: shooting stuff in the Age of Darkness but people always talk about the Eldar being different than in 40k. I skipped all the Cabal segments and don't really understand what that means aside from the Deldar never coming up to my knowledge.

    Surely elf is elf.

They're the same. They might describe them differently because the imperium knew less and fought them much less frequently.

question for the Space Wolves fags out there, how hard is to make the marines in kill team look heresy appropriate?
scale looks ok (on minicompare at least), so I'm thinking of just shaving off chaos symbols and greenstuff some flayed skin over the mk7 torsos

Ymmv but the short of it is "we don't know and can only assume things", BL just uses the 40k stuff because GW sells those. The end and the death just has the generic craftworld/commorragh/exodites but again on the "more groups", those were just the ones that showed up.

Eldar are gonna have all the same tech but not the same organization. The aspect shrines might not exist as coherent organizations or cultures but someone can still put a sonic screamer on and run around with a power sword, or shoot someone with a fancy shuriken catapult. Autarchs wouldn't exist but you'd still have commanders.

I'm having trouble against anyone who run predominantly jump packs. It seems like either they slam into me turn one and I can't do enough about it or they can hide behind terrain and jump out at me turn two. Either way I get overwhelmed. Am I correct in assuming the Linebreaker Echelon won't work for things like Tyrant Siege Terminators or Deathshroud Terminators because they don't have "Cataphractii" or "Tartaros" directly in their names, despite being wearing those types of terminator armour?

No anon, this was completely intentional, they didn't want you using any of the various legion specific units in linebreaker, they were trying to support using the generic cataphractii/tartaros Terminator squads. Unfortunately the dark angels continue to be special snowflakes, and managed to squeeze their way in anyway because they got the only unit that has the ability to pick between cataphractii and Tartaros in terminator deathwing companions in legacies

I think one of the main issues I have is how poorly conveyed some of the Praetor roles are. While it leaves room for creative interpretation, I feel that many thread-autists will have an absolute shitfit unless it falls in line with their own preestablished notion of what said Praetor looks like. "Suffering from success", indeed.
    >>

Can multiple "for every X models in this unit" options go on the same guy? Specific example, could I have two Legionaries in a Despoiler Squad with a plasma pistol AND a power weapon? Or would I have to have two guys with a plasma pistol and two different guys with power weapons?

I really like the Brotherhood of Ruin. I realise they are only mentioned once as taking it up the ass from the World Eaters while trying to beseige Sarum then having their worlds eaten and being made extinct.

Tacticals or despoilers in a rhino are actually faster than an assault marine on the turn they jump out to charge. So keep that in mind.

If you are having issues dealing with terrain? Bring fateweaver allies and just turn that shit off. Local assault marine blob not so tough after the ruin theyre hiding behind dematerializes and a large blast hits them head on.

    >>98900464
Per the NL trilogy (40k books as they are) the batwinged helmets are actually heresy appropriate. They were ceremonial designs from the legion days and the guy wearing one gets shit from his squadmates for the campy helmet he wears "for old times sake". Call them sarum pattern if you want to justify it to yourself more.

As for the rest? Pretty easy for the most part. You want to trim down some of the excess trim (remove spikes where reasonable, etc), also obviously remove the overt chaos stuff, late heresy yada yada and all that bit it obviously looks a bit "era inappropriate".

    >>
    >>98904398
Because you held the camera sideways? Your phone camera is oriented so that it's the right way up when you hold the phone sideways, with the main Home/shutter button on the right (so the upside down images like the one you posted here means the poster is likely left handed). Now your phone will put how you held it in the metadata of the image, allowing it to rotate the image correctly no matter what contortion you got up to, but 4chan strips all metadata and shows the image the way it really is.

Seing you mean "Consul role", I wish Siege breakers could take a heavy weapon choice, seeing how they gave full access to the armory by unlocking phosphex.
Whether they go Frontline or hang in the backfield, that'd be the player's call.

They did the same with the Optae and the now-downgraded Armistos: both are now lieutenants, simply one is melee and the other is ranged. They are essentially the very same officer, but with 40k style separate data sheets based on their gear
    >>
    >>98904414
Ah, oops. I used "sideways" there for two different things. The first "sideways" was relative to how the camera wants to be, the second "sideways" is relative to how you'd hold a phone for most tasks.
So to use less ambiguous words, the photo came out sideways because he held the phone in portrait orientation, holding it in landscape orientation with the button on the right makes the pictures come out right-way-up even when the metadata is stripped off.

No what I mean is that if a unit is hiding behind a terrain piece that isn't area terrain (which should be half of the terrain pieces at least according to the rulebook) you can't make that piece of terrain see-through with your fateweaver allies.

    >No what I mean is that if a unit is hiding behind a terrain piece that isn't area terrain
Yes, but "terrain pieces" are both far rarer than area terrain, and do not have the same LOS blocking properties. If I can so much as see a speck of a unit through a terrain piece theyre in LoS, if theyre 3"+ behind area terrain they arent.

So yes, you cant turn off a mountain or hill (unless its area terrain that grants a cover save) or a fully formed impassable building/statues/whatever. But how often do you need to do that? What is your conception of a normal board where this is significant?

    >the rulebook guidance
Is first of all just that, its a reference for "this is a solid amount of terrain" and not even a "this is the official requirement". But even going by that the average terrain piece is at most 4x4", things like statues and foundains and stuff. small impassable obstacles which do not represent nearly as much of a significant LOS issue as area terrain. You are not (without great difficulty) hiding a unit behind that space marine statue, while that piece of eagle area terrain can from certain angles block a lot of shots.

So you arent wrong, but that doesent matter very much.

To use an example from a game I played. And yes, this terrain is not great quality (unpainted) but I would consider this a decent setup for table and representative of other tables I have played on/how much terrain is considered "acceptable/reasonable" for the local area.

All those ruins? Thats area terrain.
The terrain pieces? That would be what, the two small houses, maybe the crates and maybe the little walls?

Its not "nothing", but the ability to selectively ignore the ruins is enough to render a gunline absurd (as was the case here, where I simply flattened a custodes army without much difficulty or thought, the plan was to outscore them (which I did) but by turn 3 the thought became "so what if I just table them" which became a borderline realistic proposal (borderline as tribunes and telemons are basically immortal))

    >>98904726
Locally we play with 4 to 6 terrain pieces that purely block LOS, some large enough to hide a spartan behind. Looking at the terrain you use I can see why you think fateweavers are broken lmao.
Also the ruins without base plates technically should be played as terrain pieces, not area terrain, and this would block LOS entirely (wouldn't even be able to shoot through windows)

It's just like terrain in general, depending on how much or little people use the game they experience can be entirely different.
    >>
    >>98904748
Okay, anon, try and think of what PRACTICAL difference it makes as to whether your army is led by a highborn or an archon. Because there isnt any. Theyre still the same dark eldar using the same weapons and fighting in the same, way, all that changed is the fluff/theming.

    >Also the ruins without base plates technically should be played as terrain pieces, not area terrain
Cool, so you can see right through all the windows (which means you dont even need fateweavers to a large extent) because the whole 3" LoS blocking is an area terrain thing (terrain features only block the LoS they physically block, so a ruin with lots of windows is effectively transparent), and they dont give a cover save (because that is a feature of area terrain)

Ruins just dont really work as terrain features.

    >some large enough to hide a spartan behind
Uh oh! Someone isnt following official GW guidelines(TM). The authorities have been notified.

More seriously do post a picture of your tables, this sounds somewhat interesting.
    >>

    >>
    >>98904819
    >it's just the fluff
That's not a small difference, fluff is what pushes this game. Fluff is how FW was selling the black books. And we don't even know if the whole torture to keep slaanesh away is even a thing in 30k.
    >>
    >>98904901
yeah. if it wasn't for lore, I don't think many people would be going :lets buy 60 tacticals,3 rhinos, 2 land raiders and the same heroes for the Nth time.
    >>
    >>98904878
For the "official suggestion" for terrain features? Maybe.
Area terrain is anywhere up to 10"x10" per the same suggestion.

Anyways, if you are it just reinforces my point that for very natural and obvious reasons no one plays according to those "guidelines" or whatever you want to call them, and that everyone just uses the ruins they have lying around. And those ruins are area terrain.
    >>
    >>98904901
    >That's not a small difference
    Except it actually is.

Even "in the fluff" the dark eldar pre vect and the dark eldar bost vect are the same fucking guys, its pre vs post heresy NL tier "theres no difference". They still act the same, operate the same, have the same motivations, aesthetics, themes, its all the same except instead of aristocratic power its a criminal meritocracy.
    >>
    >>98904901
probably is, they stole ppl from Nocturne
    >>
    >>98904878
That looks like a pretty sparsely populated table in terms of terrain. Although I guess its still acceptable, even if its on the "planet bowling ball" end of the spectrum. Not everything needs to be a busy cityfight.
    >>
    >>98904901
    >And we don't even know if the whole torture to keep slaanesh away is even a thing in 30k.
    We do. It is.

The dark eldar were doing their whole thing before slaanesh, then slaanesh happened and they found that they could just double down to avoid consequences so they did. The entire reason theres any dark eldar still around is that they torture people to stave off slaanesh, this was a thing they were doing long before the cabals replaced the aristocratic houses, long before the dark eldar were forcibly consolidated in commoragh.

    >[Shotguns] seem like a weapon having 2 in a squad is great for stun but whole units that can take them seem meh.
Immense disagree. Shotguns should not be Special weapons where a single one can stun an entire enemy unit. They used to be assault alternatives to bolters. Too bad that niche is already squatted on by Volkite

    >Shotguns should not be Special weapons where a single one can stun an entire enemy unit
And yet they are, this is also what they were last edition too.

If you want shotguns to be more offensive, have them always fire at full BS even when snapshotting (since theyre firing big spreadshot and therefore are hard to miss with), that would make them really potent on the charge (full BS volley fire).

    >If you want shotguns to be more offensive, have them always fire at full BS even when snapshotting (since theyre firing big spreadshot and therefore are hard to miss with), that would make them really potent on the charge
I like this idea so much better. It would also pair with Light units, which can snapfire after running
    >>
    >>98905682
Yea, that would be really cool. Shotgun scouts doing their thing as skirmishers.

I "like" the idea of shotguns doing stun (or being concussive last edition) because it plays into that idea of them being "precursor weapons", you fire in this withering volley as you close the gap to be better in melee. But it makes them weapons where you only want one, as opposed to "squad guns".

You could also maybe (instead of the full BS thing) give shotguns rending (the new one), something something spreadshot finds weaknesses. Although I do think the full BS shooting would be really cool and help make them a dedicated "hybrid assault" weapon. Tactical veteran squad with shotguns unloading two volleys before charging in with 2A each.
    >>
    >>98905694
I was thinking of the gun being Firestorm so it could volley at full BS (and could choose to keep shooting instead of going in), but full BS snapshots feel more natural
    >>
    >>98905722
I feel like a gun giving firestorm is a bit weird, and its a bit more niche. Full BS snapshotting seems like it would have more cool applications (like the whole "light units can run and snapshot assault weapons") thing some other anon mentioned.
    >>
    >>98905658
Add that to Skirmish units and that would make shotgun Mor Deythan way more enticing

I know the back stripes dont exactly line up with the front ones, but I have no idea how you would even properly do that so im calling this guy done. If I had transfers and knew how to use them something on the stripes might be an idea, but I can always do that later when i get some.

Long piece of painter tape and just continue to fold it over the top. Think of it as continuing the geometry.

    >Long piece of painter tape and just continue to fold it over the top
I tried that with the tape I had (some electric tape I think), but the weird bends on the shoulderpads made it hard to do a properly straight line while also having the tape be flush so paint wont get underneath.

But yea, maybe that was the way to go.
    >>
Speaking of less common units. I've of the mind that 30k games are way more fun with only one elitesuperduoerspecial squad per 3k. Waves of tacs, despoilers, even recon and bikes are way more fun than spamming elite slots.

Don't pull it taught over the spines and get real painter tape and gently run it up over and down.

WS5 is too superior to WS4 to risk it
    >>
    >>98906104
    This is true.

    >>98906129
    "yes"

In a straight fight WS5 dudes will almost always win, not even just because they have WS5 (although it doesent hurt), but because they have better durability and weapons options (and often times better saves).

The issue is action economy. A veteran squad can eat its weight in despoilers all day. But it cant engage every despoiler squad at once. A terminator command squad can wade through 3000pts of despoilers (probably), but they wont, because the despoilers can just run past them and go for the couple scoring units in the homefield and win that way.

Against an opponent that overcommits to elite melee elements, you actually CAN just win by swarming them with low tier stuff.
    >>
    >>98906159
It would be a powerful argument if WS4 Termies weren't 200 pts vs WS5 elite Termies' 250 pts.
So, for every 4 squads of your guys, the enemy gets 5. For your model to work (on Despoilers instead of similar regular Termies), the Despoilers guy would need a ratio of 3 to 1. But proper Despoilers cost about 130-140, so it's closer to 2 to 1, which the WS5 player can totally deal with.
    >>
    >>98906189
Oh, I dont mean terminators, I mean very literally despoilers and tacticals.

The advantage of WS4 terminators is almost purely "slot". WS5 terminators are universally elite or retinue, which are - for most legions - very limited and require either your apex, a logistical benefit, or specific listbuilding (via the champion aux detachment), which all have a significant opportunity cost associated with them.
    >>
    >>98906189
    >250
Lets be honest, no they arent. Theyre 300+ because youre buying them upgraded weapons. And theyre actually 600~ at the minimum because they come in a land raider, because once you spend 300pts on 5 guys you really need them to get where they want to go unmolested.
    >>
    >>98906208
This is the more likely scenario. For me its deathstar in transport + Seekers(or equiv) + some other really killy elite, then 2x10 tacs in rhinos, and the rest of the list the killiest things you can fit like a melta kratos.

I yearn for blocks of tacticals, preds/tanks, a dread, some cool 1W power armor units to taste, and one centerpiece elite unit.

Eh, generic Command termies are 270 pts per 5 already with hammers (140 +80 +50). Others (Justaerin) are yet more expensive and powerful, but I guess a direct comparison is less fair as they become more and more divergent.
With the Land Raider (~540) the Despoilers do achieve a 4-1 ratio, letting them survive the WS5 Termies by virtue of being too numerous to engage.
Anon's >>98906159 argument stands. Seems like a win for balance in this edition, right? Everything having a niche, a use.
    >>
    >>98906655
Oh I meant direct line of sight. Artillery being able to reach it seems fair.

How is HH different to 40k?
    t. nogames but models in 40k aren't really grabbing me
    >>
    >>98906655
I want to make something like this out of like the new Krieg artillery and a larger plastic tank, could be fun
    >>
    >>98907187
Much better fleshed out rules for each legion compared to 40k, also cool unique legion special units and lore.
    >>
    >>98906388
Seekers are cool. Theyre reasonably cheap "good at shooting" normal dudes using slightly fancier boltguns to kill weird elites dead.
    >>
    >>98907187
HH has rules based on 6th and 7th edition 40k (although it has evolved quite a bit since then).

Vehicles work very differently, unit stats work very differently, weapons work quite differently, etc.

HH also tends top be played with much larger armies, the normal game size is 3000pts (vs 2000 for 40k) and within those games there is simply (usually) a lot more models and (imo) a lot more of a "this is a proper army" feel with large formations of dudes instead of "heres my 5 man action squad, and heres 3 10 man elite specialist squads with a character in them". Special characters are also rarer and less neccessary. Theyre powerful, but you arent facing calgar in every marine list.

The models are also imo much better, closer to the older (proper) aesthetics of 40k and with much more room for persnal expression via conversions.

pff. he has primaris parts both his foot, gloves and the sword. I like

    >>98905312
Well I do like broad swords, but it is not like the blades can't be replaced. the GK kit has great slimer power swords,

I just want the old designs and unlimited interchangeability back...
    >>
    >>98907595
Same. But at least nuMkIV is close enough.
Another big issue is the 5 same poses across all kits. It sucks and it's very noticeable when looking at units on a table.
It's just a cost cutting thing just like the lame B&W transfers. Meanwhile 40k gets lots of 10 bodies kits (like CSM, DG) and full color tranfer sheets
