what age were you when you first started painting
    >>
    >>98895847
Around 13 or 14 back in 1997 when one of my classmates brought on of those brochures to school, with advertisments of 5th edition of WH Fantasy, 40k and Epic 40. We stayed in the hobby for a couple years, then quit for almost two decades and came back to it during the first covid lockdown.

    Also reposting my newest result.

you are ignoring the difference between 2d and 3d, either because you are stupid and never stopped to think about it, or because you are a rat and doing it intentionally to support your argument. if you are trying to paint a gold sphere on canvas you will never be able to make it look like a sphere with gold paint. even if you forget about paint entirely and use real gold leaf it will never look round because in the end it's just a flat circle. this is the limitation of metallic coatings ON CANVAS. when you get to 3d objects the situation is entirely reversed. you will never be able to paint a ball using yellows and browns that looks as much like gold as real electroplated gold, let alone good gold paint. at best nmm will always look stylized, which is fine if stylized is your goal, but if you are just looking for results it's doing more work for less payout in the eyes of everyone but 2d elitists.

    Its three phases for me:
In elementary school, i painted 1:72 italeri and revell soldiers and tanks with disgusting enamel paints, because i had a neighbor who was like 5-6 years older, and he was into scale models. I have no clue why my parents accepted those smelly paints on their kitchen table

Around 17, i got introduced to 40k (3rd edition), and i painted a chaos marine army and played casually for maybe 2-3 years

And lastly, around mid 30, i got back into it during covid and from buying a single start collecting chaos marines set (for nostalgias sake) and a couple of paints, it evolved into buying 4 3d printers over the years.

    >what age were you when you first started painting
Must've been before I was 12, since I knew where I was when I started painting, and I knew when I moved here. Like >>98896380, I painted plastic scale military models with Testors enamel paints first. In fact, the original reason I chose Blood Angels about 35 or so years ago was solely because I had several bottles of Testors Flat Red enamel on hand. We didn't even get our own roolz until 1996.

I still have a bunch of Mk VI beekees painted with Testors Flat Red.
    >>
So, let's get this straight - would metallic paints actually damage natural hair brush or it's just a meme?
    >>
    File: pic.jpg (200 KB, 1750x1411)
    200 KB JPG
    >>98896434
nah, this iteration is by far the best one. Three things come to mind:
    1) why extra armor everywhere but where the crew compartment is?
    2) combine textures - for example, use the "ERA" bricks on top of the skirts, but leave the lower part just flat regular plasticard
    3) You could also add some angles to the plates - for example like in picrel. It's not necessarily realistic, but they can help with the effect a lot.

And I still think you should drop the recoilless rifles and replace them with some scifi weaponry. They are way too iconic, and, to be honest, were always just funky looking, even irl. I can imagine some heavy 40k plasma or something similar could actually finally sling it over to the "actual kitbash" territory. The lil turret in the center deserves some optics, too.
    >>
    >>98896464
    short, yes. long, no
natural hair holds onto paint better, and small specs of metals even better. if you don't properly clean them, it goes up and ruins the brush. You really have to wash them thoroughly with soap after each use and ensure no paint travels up into the ferrule. if you can't commit to being that anal about maintenance, just go with synthetic.
    >>
    >>98896477
You're just throwing poop at the wall at this point.
Put the tonk away and come back to it in a year or more when you've learned more.
    >>
    >>98896477

Thank you. I've learned a lot from this project. I can add more plates and make some angled cuts (pretty sure I've now seen ERA bricks which had a triangular shape). As for the sci-fi weapons, I had an idea for the barrel: twisting two wires together in a pattern like pic related, but obviously a lot tighter. It can be done easily with a drill and it could give an impression of some sort of energy weapons.

    >enamel paints
Same. The local hobby store owner, who was a sweet guy, unfortunately did not know the right way to paint a model. He had me painting Orc Warriors with testors gloss enamels, unthinned, straight out of the pot. It looked like shit and my mother also always made me paint outside because she thought the fumes would give me cancer. So my first foray into mini painting was messy, unsatisfying, no fun at all. Glad I stuck with it until some years later I found the Internet and learned about acrylics and thinning.
    >>
    >>98895847
Around 30. An old friend gifted me a box of 40k miniatures so I decided I'd give it a try. I'm almost 40 now and painting minis is one of the things that keeps me sane.

Finished the stitching on the flesh book. It's not great but I don't think I did too bad for my first real sculpting attempt. Maybe I'll scrape it off and try again.
Also tried my hand at getting the flowers smaller. I managed about the right size and with a bit more practice I think I'll be able to make some decent roses at the right scale. What's a good tool lube I could use since using water is kind of a pain in the ass?

the rest of the fart smelling nmm - influencer jewtuber - it, kept complaining and shitting on GW for prefering stuff that looked like their IP and eavy metal, Yikes... imagine that?

So they took what made it special, the EM cup and turned it into circle jerk for the same group of individuals that like to paint a certian way but that dont like the GW style. GW has its own team of professional painters, so why the fuck are they getting guest judge?

    >>98899032
I think it's just a matter of taste really. NMM and all that takes immense level of skill, but I personally prefer actual metallics. Most of the winners and style of the really skilled painters end up with the whole mini looking like velvet or silk. It doesn't looks like what it's actually supposed to look like.
Back in the day I remember the European Golden Demon winners were mostly a very realistic and gritty style compared to the American one where there was a lot of NMM and tons of very bright colours.
Everything has been very homogenised and the velvet style is just everywhere now.

I finished the last three, boring but important for gameplay, barbed wire pieces. I think the dead tree branches stand out too much on the base. It's the first time I used the gamergrass stuff I bought, but I think I need to do some subtle green glazing to the branches to integrate it more with the jungle floor.

If anything, tone down the rust effect on the tracks for your next tanks.
Its highly unlikely for rust to build up in random spots on the tracks of operational tanks, while the majority of the track is rather clean. But at that scale, it does not matter too much i guess.

Agree with you on the "velvet" style. Very apt description of it. There were some entries last year that had a really sweet "oil painting" vibe that I really enjoyed. Gritty styles can take a lot of skill as well. I really never liked the velvet style while still recognizing the skill needed for it.
    >>
About GS/Miliput use - is vaseline really enough to prevent it from sticking to parts? I wanted to make few parts that would fit existing ones but still separate, would covering said plastic parts in vaseline allow Miliput to adhere but not stick to them? It would need to stay in this form for a while to harden while keeping the shape.

    >>98898892
Damn, the steel parts like the face and joints are so well done on that guy, did you paint it?

Finished tank man. Yes, I know the dust should be on the entirety of the tracks, I just thought it'd look cooler with some bare metal visible at the top.

    >>
    >>98900318
Brilliant work anon. I think it's fine you didn't dust the top of the tracks, it adds a little more colour variation instead of being red all over.

    >>
    >>98900318
You have centered the tank treads, but not the model. Had you placed the treads as far back on the base as possible the overhang issue would be mitigated.
It is well painted, nothing is done incorrectly, not even the paint scheme, it looks like something you'd expect to see on the GW catalogue. This makes my criticism quite clear, where is evidence of you being involved on this mini? It has no piece of your soul, only your time and money.

    >>
    >>98901294
And there is nothing wrong with that, sometimes you just want the in universe faction as presented in the lore, or at least as primarily presented in the lore.
It's just the only criticism for it, as I did put first, there is nothing done wrong with the paintjob, even the tread dusting is artistically correct if not realistically correct.
Truly personal expression is a factor of art and it's the only factor not present here.

I wanted the captain to be a little different from the regular guys so I tried a blue metallic zenithal on him to make it look like his armor was more pristine or something. I tried making it look like pale dead tree and matching photos of a palm tree I have, but it was way too pale so I gave it a very thin and spotty glaze of Snakebite Leather to warm it up just a little bit. The colours in the photos match what they look like in person. I don't know, it just looks a bit messy to me, but I'm trying to have a lot of plant variety to make it dense like a real jungle. The bases on the minis are going to be pretty much fully overgrown with grass and plants. Whatever isn't green will have the jungle floor stuff from Reality In Scale I bought.

cut her off the tactical rock and glue her to the other rock in the corner. also I think when you are making a diorama you are supposed to be making a scene, not just a character standing in the middle of some terrain. right now your layout just looks like you had space to fill so you put random doodads down to occupy it.
    >>
    >>98906001

    >>
    >>98906054
I originally wanted to put her on the big rock but it's not flat and I was having a hard time figuring out how to handle her feet so she'd be standing straight up and down. Maybe put some green stuff under her heel so that the rock surface rises up to meet her but that might look weird too? I do think taking her off the cork is probably the direction to go though. I'd like the focus to be on her, I'm not really making a battle scene or anything like that, but I also don't want it to just look like a bunch of stuff in a circle around her.
    >>
    >>98906072
well she's looking over her shoulder so maybe put something behind her that she's looking at. also she seems to be doing the hand bra thing so you could be funny and have it be a critter running away with her shirt.

The issue I see with the cork is that its texture is vastly rougher than that of the plastic rocks, which will probably look weird when it's all painted
If you wanted to put her on an uneven rock I'd personally file down two little boot shaped dents for her to slot into and hide the fact that she's sunk into the rock with sand around the edges of the soles

Hm. Maybe I can find an STL of a little monkey running with a piece of cloth or something.

Yeah. Stuck her on with blutak for now but maybe I'll try filing a flat surface on the rock tomorrow. Got candy to hand out now. Thanks for the feedback.

IMO stuff's too evenly distributed there to feel natural.

Yeah. Maybe I'll clump up the cacti and see how that looks

Use different paints then wet blend them together
    Then use multiple washes/contrast

Hmm. Not having a lot of luck with monkies, but I do have a bloodbowl snotling runt running off with a bra. Probably need to cut off the pom pom in his other hand though.

Base colors down. Still haven't decided if this should be a New Republic fighter or Pirate scum.

Spacenam from reptilian overlords fits the bill. Also got plenty of normal minis in the range, it's not all coomer stuff

    >>98905430
You could slather them all on at the same time and wet blend them together, also if you do the same with the base coat like >>98906412 did you'll get some nice natural variation

    >>98906623
    This is perfect lol

Fuck nevermind, I missed the part about anon not liking to work with resin
