I don't see it talked about much, but what about mercenary squadrons of aerospace fighters? Instead of just hiring a couple of random pilots at the bar nearest your mech hiring hall, a full on squadron of mercs with their own CV that will accompany your mech unit on its planetary assault, and then fuck off once you no longer require/can afford air cover?

Rough work-in-progress version of the Namek Record Sheet and a blank version of it to attach to the roll charts for the future. Very much eyeballed at the current moment, as I think I need to rescale some stuff in the General information tab, and some of the lines may be a bit thin on writing room. But I'm probably missing some stuff, so any other thoughts?

Also so we can roll some stuff, lets get some details on what the leader's like if they ever ended up being deployed.

Experience Rating (1d20)(BM = Battlemech, AS = Aerospace)
>1: Green BM, Green AS
>2: Regular BM, Green AS
>3: Green BM, Regular AS
>4-5: Regular BM, Regular AS
>6: Veteran BM, Green AS
>7-8: Veteran BM, Regular AS
>9: Green BM, Veteran AS
>10-11: Regular BM, Veteran AS
>12-13: Veteran BM, Veteran AS
>14: Elite BM, Green AS
>15: Elite BM, Regular AS
>16: Elite BM, Veteran AS
>17: Green BM, Elite AS
>18: Regular BM, Elite AS
>19: Veteran BM, Elite AS
>20: Elite BM, Elite AS

After the above is rolled, roll 1d6 for each of the four Piloting and Gunnery skills (different people each roll) on whichever of the following charts is relevant.

Green
>1: Skill Rating of 7
>2-3: SR of 6
>4-5: SR 5
>6: SR 4

Regular
>1-2: SR 5
>3-4: SR 4
>5-6: SR 3

Veteran
>1-2: SR 4
>3-4: SR 3
>5-6: SR 2

Elite
>1-2: SR 3
>3-4: SR 2
>5-6: SR 1

So...are we looking at the original founding leader getting so old his skills have degraded, the succession just happened and there's a young ruler in charge, the other guys wanted go out to fight rather than wrangle paperwork and put the logistics person in charge, or have they really committed to the Namek larp and made a non-combat "Dragon Clan" equivalent for the leaders while the military is treated as the "Warrior Clan"?
>>
>>98883114
Wrong. Hunchback orthodoxy remains uber alles. In the era of ilClan any merc worth their hunchback addiction sold their mech and all the salvage they ever got to buy the production model C's from seafoxes. 6/9 cuac20 carrier. Fucking NOICE.

I was thinking about it because I've been playing with the aero bsp rules in the new core book, and last thread people were talking about merc dropships. Aerotech in space is fine (you just need a very large playing area for even a small game), it's when you get into atmosphere that there's problems. And even then, it's really only problem (singluar). Lawndarting is a rule for honkmaxxed clowns. The fact that a single hit can send you from halfway to space into the dirt is ridiculous.

Technically the clans are a totalitarian meritocracy with fascist tendencies, and the Combine is a fascist monarchy with totalitarian tendencies, and both are culturally steeped in a flanderized version of a chosen set of historical aesthetics. The Combine's lifestyle is honestly kind of clan like when you dig into how their class system works for anybody who isn't blood related the Kurita dynasty.
I'm going to call it a wash.

Women can't be Mechwarriors. They don't have enough physical fitness. You'll never see a women able to beat a man in a fight, regardless of circumstances. Mechs are no different.
>>
>>98883546
>Do you think the Clans had a moral superiority to House Kurita?
EVERYONE has moral superiority to authoritarian fascist governments. They are the lowest of the low.
>>
>>98883546
The clans are the most evil and cruel governments, and needlessly so, ever devised by humans in battletech, they don't even have moral superiority over the capellans and their servitor system.
I'm surprised warriors even get enough political schooling to be taught and misapply the term "fascist".
>>
>>98883083
They exist, and IIRC there's even a canon space-based merc company.

Is the makeup of the lance and star packs good for tabletop use as they come? As in, I can buy any force pack and it’ll be decent enough to play a game with without swapping out mechs.

There's some packs with Mechs that are lean on variants, but anything from TR3025 is going to have more than enough for you to build around. If you want to be sure you can build a forcomp for any game, or plan to play Alpha Strike, get two and you'll have more than enough options.
>>
>>98883691
>Yeah well whenever a leader character chooses to ride a light mech at least one other will look at them funny and wonder if they're suicidal.
But there are many characters in the lore who are ace light mech pilots and never have it shot out from under them. But on the table a 0/1 is just as likely to get legged by a cerppc as a 5/6.
>>
>>98883816
The Italian government before and during WWII was a constitutional monarchy that conceded broad powers to Mussolini, but the king's endorsement still provided legitimacy to the fascists for conservatives. The Italians didn't remove their monarchy until after WWII when they became a left leaning republic.
>>
>>98883816
The Coordinator of the Draconis Combine has never claimed the title of Tenno.
>>
>>98883870
That was the monarchy cooperating under duress with the fascist government, they were always opposed to each other. Anything within a fascist nation that is not completely a willing part of the fascist government is effectively a hostile entity to the fascist government, a fascist government does not condone entities separate from the government.
The draconis combine is also a feudal state, which is definitely incompatible with the centralization required for fascism's requirement of total state control over everything.

Oh hey, the Stoners!

The Great Houses have shown they have staying power through centuries, to the point the family names hold more power than blood. Actually, if anything, the Combine is a theocracy as the Coordinator is the ultimate living god of his people. This also reminds me of how much both the Caps have ripped them off over the years.

In our ongoing Draconis Reach campaign, we had the last of our duels today. My Crusader 7W got matched against a Lancelot 09. The enemy was both faster and longer ranged with clantech guns, but the small size of the arena meant he couldn't fully leverage those advantages. He had to stay at exactly 8 hexes to have better hit rolls than me. Meanwhile my Crusader was happy to trade shots at any distance except exactly 8, so more often than not I was connecting. After a few turns of this, sustained missile fire had worn away a lot of his armor, and he conceded, because pushing for a win would've required him to pay for clan tech crit/repair costs and probably eaten his winnings.

We'll be moving on to a real merc contract soon

>>
>>98884177
Total centralization or the goal of total centralization is the most defining feature of fascist governance, it is an ideology of state control for the sake of state control. In practice, it isn't really distinguishable from established "communist" regimes, it being a branch of socialism. It only differs in ideals, state control being the means to an end(the end never being achievable of course) for one and the end itself for the other.
A feudal state is simply too decentralized to qualify at all, but most clans are about as close as you can get to perfect fascism, being more or less accurately described as semi-kratocratic fascism, everything down to the people themselves being more closely and thoroughly integrated into the state than in any other society ever seen.

This is why the clans do away with the old as to make room for those with youthful vigor, determination and superior reflexes.

It could just be the guy focuses on being a ship captain more than anything? Maybe the first chance they get they stick the leader of the state in a Pocket Warship or even one of the only proper Warships they end up owning?
Or maybe he started off leading a as an old school commander leading raids before taking over the previous leader's place.
Or maybe leadership really is Guru lite, and all the violent, swash buckling crews and armies of Namek are held together by a Saisei Itchi (unity of worship and government), where the political leader also acts as the chief religious figure.
Maybe the leader is basically a Shiny Priest who blesses the big Kami of the Dropships and gives his blessings on certain raids as backed by the state, which give the captain planning and leading a raid the legitimacy to call on other crews to back him like a temporary admiral.
Or it could just be the guy is genuinely just mediocre and inexperienced in fights but is backed up by a military of hardened warriors in a rough, but free loving culture.
There's a few ways to place this.

The stats we have are Jihad era when they've only really done reminiscience piloting rather than formal sorties.

If we go with that, maybe when he dies, it's in a LAM vs LAM clash between his Wasp LAM and one of the Blakist Spectral LAMs (bribe to attack Ghost Bear from behind gone wrong?) that ends in a mutual kill as he ends up flying like he did at his peak. It does also fit into the idea that Mechwarriors tend to be the 'champion' of their crew. Holy SHIT I wish anon. The sooner Battletech finally excises its boomer rules and players in favor of a game people can actually play in an evening after work, the sooner Battletech might actually be successful. Can you imagine catching up to 40k finally? Seeing real fanmade material, having big tournaments, seeing Battletech novels in bookstores, having a TV show like Secret Level, or even having a real printed magazine like White Dwarf. It's also fun to have more forces in the inner sphere capable of churning out more advanced clan mechs I guess, even if that's not everything

Not true, it’s unusual, but not mutually exclusive. Imperial Japan of the 1930’s and 1940’s was absolutely a Facist regime. It also had an emperor, which was an inherited title, making Imperial Japan a hereditary monarchy (just with different titles). But Emperor Hirohito was very pro-fascist at the time (because by authoritarian ideology even more power and control would be consolidated around him and his cronies than even the old ideologies would permit, and without oversight). So… it can happen.

If he dies, he dies.

Though if you want this danger to prompt something that slows this down, could declare that Referees clearly can't keep up with the fighting, so everyone's mechs need to be customized with safety systems. You use a "Targeting Computer" as proxy. It doesn't provide any to-hit bonuses, but instead locks down "dead" Mechs when it determines that too much damage would come in and prevents attacking them. The TarComp is used to determine the weight of the safety systems and everyone needs to declare where they are saving that weight.

What kind of a clan light/medium mech would fit into a merc company as salvage? Roughly thinking around clan invasion time frame to shortly after. Don't want anything too crazy/unrealistic, but it would still be a lucky situation for the company.

Mist Lynx is always a good option, weapons are pretty concentrated in the arms so it'd be relatively easy to salvage.

Black Lanner would be easy to justify late in the war

The most reasonable light to salvage is a Fire Moth because statistically not only are you going to encounter them in every clan touman, but statistically a few MASCs are going to lock up its legs on occasion, giving you near 100% fresh salvage after it finishes cartwheeling through the air
If the G forces somehow don't kill the bear inside then you can even claim them as bondsmen.
That or just kick its barely armored leg off when one gets too cocky and greeds a backstab
>>
>>98890053
Speaking of Fire Moths
Is this a reasonable second line Scout / Striker / Command star? With both the Fire Moth and Nova being able to get reconfigured into high alpha strike variants depending on mission parameters. Not to mention helping evac elementals from others stars that got wrecked on the front.

>>
>>98891336
Some mechs can fire a lot more for up to 5 turns before seeing negative heat penalties. Some every other turn. I agree though, having to wait 2 or 3 turns for your heat to cycle down low enough to fire an adequate amount of weapons is ass and is absolutely a design flaw. Note though that firing an adequate amount of weapons does NOT mean alpha striking. Plenty of mechs have to cycle their weapons around based on range and stuff, like the Bushwacker for example

No way! Turn 11 is complete. The battle rages on with giants on the verge of collapse. All it takes is one little hit to the right area and everything changes.

>>
>>98891973
This is standard operating procedure for the jenner, it works pretty well. Most map sheets aren't just flat plains, there's usually cover you can utilize. Combine the range, terrain, and TMM from jumping, and it's not likely to be a trivial shot.
>>
>>98891973
Then what were you going to accomplish at 5/8/- that 4/6/5 doesn't get you?
>>
Even with something like the classic Awesome fire pattern, how much are you really going to need you move after 3 straight turns of firing? At that point either something fast is up your ass and you might need to turn one or two hex faces to avoid it or you're standing off against another brick, and there's a good chance one or both of you are bogged down in woods and hills. What does 3/5 really do for you in that situation that 2/3 doesn't?
>>
>>98891973
NTA but the to hit bonus you get from jump jets is massive compared to just running. Maxxing out your jump jets to make your mech harder to hit is almost always worth it, even with the negative accuracy modifier you get yourself. On top of that you can reorient yourself in any direction you want so it's almost impossible to get flanked if you play the terrain right. Jumping > running always
>>
>>98892056
There are still times where running is better, especially if you can find straight enough lanes to build a good TMM or there's a time limit and you have to get somewhere in a hurry.

Sometimes you have such good shooting numbers that the chance you'll destroy or cripple an enemy is worth the risk. Other times you are positioned well enough, or your enemy is so focused on some other target, that spending the next turn overheated is a safe risk. Honestly if you've never pushed your heat without waiting until you're dead then you're just not living right.

>>98891327
They hated him because he told them the truth.
The heat scale is way too tight, all the worst possible penalties are compacted into the single digits. If those penalties were moved further away and certain other smaller penalties (such as +1 to hit ONLY at long range, etc) were to populate the range then more people would want to make their non-TSM mechs warm.

It'd be really cool if all the individually named components had different weird, little quirks, like say a Vindicator getting a bonus to heat sinking if it stays in the water if it used its Ceres Arms Smasher brand PPC that turn for example.
But realistically that would be insane trying to keep track of in a pencil and paper type game.
Maybe if it was being tracked automatically like on megamek.
>>
>>98894812
Not really. Moving space rocks the size of mountains is a pretty involved operation that requires special gear and know-how.

It's also a general principle of BT that nothing happens in space.
>>
>>98894534
Because the performance is grouped into 10 second intervals and each hex being equal to 30 meters. This flattens a lot of stuff like a single shell vs burst.

If you want full details, you want one of the games like Mechwarrior 5 that goes in on the real time where you will get significant variation in quality levels, manufacturer, and type of firing action among other things that come up with working with a way, way more granular timespan and just general ability to calculate stuff.

because it's fun, especially if you really like the mech in question. The issue for me, and why I don't always do it, is because sometimes it gets a little hard keep track of what mech is what even on something like megamek. Sometimes I want a more relaxed game and having to keep mental track of what identical mech moved and which one didn't can be annoying, but not always.

Post crabman's crabs next time you can snap a pic of them. The Marauder guy also sounds cool as well. I'm sure he knows about Miller's Marauders, who only field Marauders
>>
>>98894943
>all weapons unique
I like this idea but generally at best all you can do is add some fluff in the description of the mech for it. That being said whenever I design a mech I usually like to look at the quirks available for their weapons and I usually like to add something to make them feel a little unique. For example I recently designed a mech that uses a handheld rifle style clan grade large pulse laser, but since it's made by a small company in the IS, it has the poor cooling jacket quirk, because the small shop making them can't perfectly emulate clan spec stuff and it produces more heat as a result. Sometimes adding small quirks like that, even if they enshittify your mechs, is fun

Most people I know use the "max 2 of the same chassis and 1 of the same variant" guideline. It's not a hard group rule or anything, and the bigger the game, the less likely it is to be followed. We did a campaign where the starting forces were whatever you wanted up to a max of 2 of the same chassis (regardless of variant) but then afterwards new mechs that weren't salvaged in a match were taken off RAT rolls and you could end up with as many of the same design as you could roll (and afford, and have somewhere to deploy them from).

Core writeup done by this weekend? Woah, woah, woah! Where's that idea coming from? Even once the game is done being simulated, I've got lots of data points to compile, the full batrep to write up, I was thinking of making some more lore in the form of turn by turn chatter of that battle. I've got to upload all the pics from the phone, then download them to the computer, then organize them and pair them up with portions of the batrep and create a 4-chan friendly 2,000 character limit batrep. There's a lot beyond just the battle being simulated.
All the lore story bits that I posted not too long ago aren't even included in that. That's all stuff that I'll do in the break between battles 2 and 3.
>last 6 mechs likely to go the distance?
6 mechs? Did I say 6 mechs? Hmmm, well I'm looking at having just completed turn 15 and now we're down to 5 mechs. Turns are so much faster to play now. I will spoil a tiny bit about the current state of the battle though. It's not a 4v1 battle, it's a 3v2.
>Percentage of remaining BV for each side: (36.4%) vs. (25.2%)
Could still go either way.

When it comes OmniMechs, what exactly makes OmniPods a big deal for mech customization? I mean, before 3050, you already had mechs that replaced their primary weapons with alternatives for whatever reason, consequences be damned (the Centurion 9-A that would come to be known as Yen-Lo-Wang which had its AC/10 replaced with an AC/20 and the chest-mounted LRM rack removed as one example), so how does an OmniPod make it easier for mech customization against pre-3050 customizations?
>>
>>98899380
>When it comes OmniMechs, what exactly makes OmniPods a big deal for mech customization?
The fact that the swap can happen in a matter of hours, allowing pilots to change their mechs loadout / get repairs done rapidly in between deployments.
The omni system allows the mech to re-calibrate itself on the fly, this is also why battle armor can cling to the mech without slowing it down.
While sure you can swap out the weapons on a regular mech with enough time, effort and money, you will still need technicians with the right knowledge to re-calibrate the whole thing so it doesn't explode.

TLDR: Better electronics and standardized parts are what make the magic lego mechs work.

Meanwhile the real reason was video game limitations, they couldn't add that many polygons so to get the most out of their limited storage space, a lot of clan mechs "mysteriously" share parts, like legs, toros, arms (Direwolf and Warhawk, Vulture and Timber Wolf, Summoner and Hellbringer, Adder and Kit Fox, Fire moth and Mist Lynx) and they came up with the omnimech justification to go with the videogame justification for swapping parts around.

The problem is that they then started making games with none omni mechs, but kept the customization since that's half the fun in a video game.
>>
>>98899380
A loadout refit for a standard mech, aerospace, etc typically was a several day to week ordeal, and that grew even more difficult if the swap was for something like going from energy to ballistics.

Omnis could do this in minutes, hours at the worse. As a result, your customization isn't restricted to building a single unit in one specific way, but instead you can have a set of multiple different loadouts you can hotswap to based on conditions.

Additionally, while this isn't represented mechanically on Tabletop all too much, in Lore you can take full limbs off of an Omnimech and put them on another if they are within certain tolerances, allowing for easier Frankenmechs.
>>
>>98899416
>>98899427
Yeah except when the Piggy finally got around to Clam robots appearing in MW5 they couldn't be bothered to set a script to make all omni refits take 0 days after a certain date.
>>
>>98899380
PLAY CAMPAIGNS YOU FUCKING SECONDARY

The moment you see what happens when an omnimech force is back out in the field 2 days after a fight, while standard battlemechs are still laid up for 2-3 weeks, you'll see the advantage omnis have. Damaged weapon? Pull it out, alot a new one in. It takes 30 minutes. Non-Omni? 4 hours, minimum, to do the same (120 minutes out, 120 minutes in), and to do so on the same target number as the omnimech requires 16 hours (quadruple time), and that's just for 1 weapon.

None of this is even touching the customization option. You know you're fighting in a heavy storm later that day? Take 2 hours and pull almost all of your missile weapons for lasers. Fighting near a volcano? Add heat sinks instead of that 13th CLPL. The IS Mechs would take 3-4 weeks to make that change minimum, and you're ready to fight that day.

Does this shit matter if all you ever play is 1-off death matches with the other mental defectives at the LGS in the 2 hours once a week you're allowed to engage with the hobby? No. Not even slightly. But if you actually game for real, playing a linked series of games where logistics actually matters, omnis are amazing.
>>
>>98899446
Fahad is simply too stupid to understand how omni's work, even after we get innersphere omni's in the form of Sunders and stuff.

Mechtechs have always been capable of massive modifications of mechs, that's why so many variants change weapons, armor, engines, sensors, etc.
It just takes a LONG time, comparatively.
The main advantage of an Omnimech is that you can change the main weapon layout while the core 'mech stays the same. An Avatar AV1-0 is going to have the same armor pips and speed rating as the AV1-0R despite having an entirely different loadout
