What kind of a light/medium mech would fit into a merc company as salvage? Roughly thinking around clan invasion time frame to shortly after. Don't want anything too crazy/unrealistic, but it would still be a lucky situation for the company.

What would be a realistic set of 3 mechs to run with it? Just want to paint up a believable lance for display.

Thinking Rifleman / Wolverine / Thunderbolt

i played my first game of battletech alpha strike two days ago after shilling it to a friend and it was so much fun. could someone please help me understand a few of the rules?
am i correct in my assumption that shooting out of woods does not give the attacker a +1 mod if the woods are only within 2" of him?
does this 2" rule impact how the 6" of wood to block LOS are calculated, or is 6" always 6"?
does partial cover always go two ways for attacker and target or is it possible to shoot out of cover while not being affected by it yourself?
how do vantage points work? is it possible to jump on a high building to use the angle of the roof to receive partial cover while shooting down freely?

This is assuming 8 tons of armor but everything else remains the same besides an increased tonnage and the changes that come from it

If there's ever one, they'd better use All Along the Watchtower somewhere, but Elvis has been mentioned in canon.

But the most natural answer here would be Southeast Asian 'Nam era rock music.

Weird character concept for the Holiday:

Clan mechwarrior who, in his free time, is an avid occultist. Goes out of his way to collect and study all things esoteric. Even paints a seal of Solomon on his Thor because of course he pilots a damn summoner as a “just in case” precaution, usually under the guise of being a “personal emblem”. Then following Tukayyid, upon learning that ComStar is functionally a cult within the inner sphere, makes it his latest campaign to learn all their secrets, and in the process become a general nuisance for ComStar. And no, I would never suggest that the character’s interest ever be “validated”.

2 questions:
1: how terrible is the concept? I mean beyond the general: “Battletech takes itself way too seriously to entertain such a goofy concept”
2: which Clan would he most likely come from? Or at least would be the least surprising?
>>

Also the Believers of St Cameron, at least some of whom believe that their prophesied apocalypse is still coming and the clans are definitely involved somehow (average day to day "cultural" Believers think that it was the Amaris coup into succession wars and now they're past it). The cloisterers are busy making seed vaults on uninhabited moons and preparing their doomsday brian castles, but the templars are actively ready to fight the end of civilization, with a vibrosword if necessary.

They wear all that shit all through the Dark Age into the ilClan. Malvina Hazen screaming at the Jade Falcon Loremaster with both in ceremonial garb during the Falcon Civil War in A Rending of Falcons is peak clantardation.

Then, there was Kisho Nova Cat traveling in Heretic's Faith in his full leather getup, and beating the shit out of a spacer for daring to charge him passage like a filthy merc.

Now, just like CGL tries to downplay the Blackout now, and the downsides of clan culture, they're trying to downplay the furry craziness. It's still there. Oh, and clanners using IS names for chassis way more than clan names.

Finally finished up the game of 8 billion tanks our group had going; the highlight of the game was probably the Cyclops dying in the most dramatic fashion. He tried to stop-drop-and-roll to dislodge the battle armor that were swarming him, when he flung himself into the ground, squished one of the Salamanders in the process, and set off his remaining ammo and exploded the entire mech. The resulting blast ALSO killed the rest of the Salamanders, but he died without getting to shoot that turn since he didn’t live to see the weapon attack phase.

The Devastator almost had a similarly dramatic finish, he got knocked down and took a nap next to the Kingfisher (only half a mech but still plenty dangerous at this point) and got his torso cracked open via aimed shots; then about 16 LBX pellets hit him square in the chest. I think he took like 9 CT crits in that turn, but the roll for the Stackpole explosion came up short so he died quietly instead of loudly.

At least the clanners get to come back when they get destroyed. If you you liked Comstar/WoB CGL tells you in no uncertain terms to go fuck yourself they are not coming back. The even revived them to kill them again.
>>
>>98869029
It's almost like CCG thinking in a way. "There's too many factions, let's cull some for the next set" was a very common thing for all the games that were trying to dethrone MtG before they all crashed and burned.
>>
>>98869033
I've never played them, only fought against them, but the inner sphere standard guys are the same annoying armor peeling hoppers that are JUST armored enough to not get one-tapped
>>
>>98869033
I only play CBT but I've had a lot of good use from the magnetic variant of the Longinus. They've got a machine gun, a heavy machine gun, and an AP mount gun, which means they absolutely shred regular infantry and still have enough volume of fire to do real (if scattered) damage to armored enemies.
And they have mag clamps so they don't even need to find an omnimech to hitch a ride.
>>
>>98869302
I play CBT as well, but mostly Lance v Lance or a mini-campaign with a group of players where we each play 1 or 2 mechs. They seem pretty nice for urban maps but 0 medium or long damage I'll definitely have to play them as ambush or anti-vehicle/infantry. Just enough damage to pop most elementals in one attack.
>>
>>98869159
It's not even like they have game balance to worry about. Writing multiple factions out of interstellar conflict in your setting designed to sell models for a space war game is like they just decided to saw off one of their own limbs. Absolutely demented decision.

Guy on the right is Thomas "The Master" Marik, who joined ComStar and was injured in an attack. His brother Duncan was Captain-General until he was killed, then Thomas returned from ComStar to become the new Captain-General.
Except the "Thomas" who returned was a plant sent by ComStar to put someone sympathetic to their cause in charge of a nation state. No one really knows who that "Thomas" was, but he turned into a pretty solid leader of the Free Worlds League after several periods of civil war and turmoil.
Flash forward to the dissolution of the Second Star League. The Word of Blake, who were set to become some sort of provisional member, were pissed that they were denied their glory. The real Thomas, who had become an absolute fanatic and joined the Word when they split from ComStar, turned the Word loose on the Inner Sphere in what became known as the Jihad. Chaos and hilarity ensue in equal measure.
Meanwhile, the fake "Thomas" is revealed to be a fraud, and the FWL basically splits apart because of it. "Thomas" becomes known as Thomas Halas (taking his wife's maiden name) and takes refuge in the Duchy of Oriente. Still a respected leader, he helps fight the Word as best he can.
Meanwhile our boy Victor Steiner-Davion, fresh on the heartbreak of his Kuritan love's murder, draws close to and eventually marries Thomas Halas' daughter Isis. This leads to the creation of the Davion-Marik family line.
The actual, original Thomas is reportedly killed along with the bulk of the Word of Blake when the Prinicipality of Regulus decides to glass Circinus in nuclear fire in retribution for the Word's attacks.

Thomas and Thomas were parent trapping the entire inner sphere. Early on they were swapping back and forth all the time, but real Thomas spent more and more time doing Comstar things until eventually he just stopped showing up entirely and False Thomas was left to his own devices. He wasn't even clued in on wob stuff, there were several Wobstar events that he assumed were part of a plan and avoided interfering in, but didn't actually know anything about. It was only when the Jihad broke out that he fully stopped trying to play ball with them.
>>
>>98870334
You would think the guy tasked with pretending to be a house lord so the real house lord can go get indoctrinated at will would be some sort of fanatical ROM super agent, but all indications point to his marching orders being very loose and his actual intention being to govern as if he was really Thomas.

Do most people accept custom mechs in games as long as they’re built right? Should I even bother?
>>

>>
>>98871249
As long as you run it by your opponent first and aren't a complete faggot about the build, you should be able to convince someone. Keep it to one custom unless you're doing a campaign though, and give your opponent the chance to run one in return.

Depends on your group. The only people in my area who try to run customs are munchkins, so everyone else are pretty leery of customs.

>customs
Should be completely discarded unless you are playing Solaris, because holy shit that's the whole purpose of competition.
>>
>>98871329
The level abstraction of CBT is high enough that individual models of small arms shouldn't matter. Even mech scale weapons don't get that level of abstraction. Thats the realm of Mechwarrior or battletroops, which are more niche.
>>
>>98871338
I'm talking about a "Shadowrun" level of scale, a fuckton of the original books happen at the individual level, and the thought of a uberpilot getting shot in the face with a needler over a mechbunny is delicious.
>>
>>98871249
The campaign I'm currently in allows one custom variant for your commander, subject to approval from the GM. Our general pickup games don't have any customs at all most of the time. The only times I've seen them come out otherwise was one time someone arranged a game specifically to be able to put some customs on the table and one time where we made frankenmechs and set up an arena fight.
>>
>>98871249
>as long as they’re built right
The chances are that if you have built your customs "right" then you could probably just find an existing mech that does exactly what you want. The only way you can do it correctly is by intentionally gimping a mech or vehicle design in one way or another.

The consequences of Youtuber tourists telling people that Battletech's main draw is the customizability of the robutts has been a disaster.

whats /btg/'s opinion on CGL art designs vs PGI re-designs?
>>
>>98871775
You could, or you could use the Steiner assault rifle that fires 4mm explosive bullets.
>>
>>98871846
I pretty much universally prefer PGI over CGL save for PGI's design trend of getting rid of the joints that would allow heads to rotate.
PGI usually provides a mech that looks like a machine, CGL usually creates something that still manages to look like a low res plastic toy in art.
CGL also has a habit of occasionally making their mechs short and obese for some reason. Maybe it's something to do with their generally poor model quality.
Whether it's heavily inspired by one of the original designs or a radical redesign, PGI tends to do it better.
>>
>>98871846
Pick your poison: CGL mechs come from the bevels and greebles dimension and can't have any small fine details because they're matched 1:1 to their plastic counterparts. PGI mechs have no necks and 80-90% of mechs have identical looking weapons because they've all caught box cancer. Additionally because no funny mechs are allowed, several unique designs are disgustingly warped to comply with a mechwarrior paper doll.

Vulcan comes to mind.
>>
>>98871941
>PGI mechs have
The PGI mechs belong to the Virtual World Invasion era of designs. They're completely shaped by the necessity to render them as game tokens in a computer system.
>>
>>98871846
PGI artwork vs their models are different things but generally a lot of their designs are too fat. Their in game Centurion model being a good example of one. CGL does feel like they're just trying to copy the PGI style but erasing a lot of mistakes.
>>
>>98871941
Their weapons look identical because they ARE identical. Every type of gun is a particular 3D asset that's pasted onto the mechs' hard points. Personally I like it. It fits with the lore of them all building off the standardized tech base of the old Star League and such. They old art was kind of all over the place.
>>
>>98871784
Isn't the Viper a better example?
>>
>>98871784
>>98872110
Personally, I'm a bigger fan of the more humanoid designs like the Viper, though.

>>
>>98871846
I generally like PGI's stuff better, but it still kind of bugs me how they re-use a lot of design elements with no rhyme or reason. Tons of their mechs look related to each other despite not being from the same manufacturer or anything. Their Awesome looks like a fat Warhammer, the Battlemaster, Shad and Centurion all have the same hands, etc.
>>
>>98872130
Although I guess canonically the PGI Shadowhawks are SUPPOSED to have humanoid hands. The weird lizard ones are cheap replacements.
>>
>wow! What a cool looking mech! What does it do?
>Nothing a mech of same tonnage can't, since all mechs have the same internal space and can equip anything!
>wow! That's fucking lame!

Mmmm, hands
>>
>>98872103
Ah yes, the lore of all lasers being mounted in the same awkward rectangles regardless of size; or where mechs with symmetrical loadouts will have one weapon loaded into a neat bespoke housing and the other actually stapled to the side. Or where mechs with limbs with no hardpoints will have an awkward stump because they didn't bother to model weirdo variants a hand for when they won't have any weapon at all. Or where some mechs have purpose built and organized missile layouts while others will stack awkward piles into a single corner of a massive bay.

I'll believe you if you say it doesn't bother you, but if you like it you're a weirdo and if you think it's lore accurate you're grasping for straws. Omnimechs are where this kind of logic might hold water, but outside of hideous laser-spam boxes Clan mechs seem less rather than more likely to have stupid box mounts.
>>
>>98871941
The PGI Vulcan is one of the best face-lift mechs in the history of the series, the Centurion, King Crab, Maurader, and Raven are absolutely gorgeous in MW5 compared to the CGL versions. It doesn't help that every CGL model that has a "machine gun" looks like it's packing a 50mm autocannon instead of a anti infantry lawnmower. A Vulcan is made for turning infantry into mush, but the CGL version looks like it can duel with fire support mechs.
>>
>>98860874
You know, playing with ai slop to come up with some wwe btech mech ideas may come up with some interesting results.
>>
>>98865933
Only the bears survives, and they learned that is better to be House Rashalague-Jorgensson than stay a failure as the remaining clans.
Sucks that they will never fuck alaric for what he did to them.
>>
>>98872605
All the ones I've played with just end up making generic mechs and can never make a specific battletech mech.
>>
>>98872646
I am using the sarna's images as base since they are black and white.
As long as you feed the image, the ai will know.
>>
>>98872605
This is actually fucking sick. I could absolutely see some merc/pirate rocking the Grim Thug and doing some crazy shit with it
>>
>>98871846
Depends on the mech for me. Like I can appreciate PGI Wolverine for keeping the chin turret and just looking good but not the Centurion for the lizard hand and looking lethargic compared to CGL Cent.
>>
>>98872938
Most CGL designs are bad compared to the games.
I'll never accept the grand titan head redesign.
>>
>>98871846
A couple designs from PGI I like more, but generally I like the design language of CGL. There are some designs from PGI that are just phenomenal though, like the Marauder. I like both versions of the Marauder, and I like that the CGL version is more close to the original art and style, but man the PGI Marauder just looks so damn good. Probably one of my favorite mech designs ever, but again, that goes for about all of the Marauder designs
>>
>>98872953
Some of them yes (Wolverine for sticking to the classic Blockhead design, Annihilator for surprisingly being very lean compared to CGL's despite PIG making them fatties usually, etc.) but I prefer most CGL designs when they stick to the original designs. I can appreciate the brutalism of PIG though and will consneed that Beluga head Titan is off. But unfortunately we will never see what a vidya Grand Titan will look like.

>>
>>98873322
There is no Japtech Grand Titan. It's not one of the ones from the Solaris box. Probably some fan thing, like they took the new Flashman design that fucked up the old barrel body from a fan piece.
>>
>>98872953
Worst, so far, IMO are the CGL/Shimmy Wolverine and Kintaro.

Wolverine loses its iconic head/face turret, though everything else is good.

Kintaro ends up badly/oddly proportioned, especially its way oversized teddy-bear looking head.

Fail.

PGI Wolverine and Kintaro keep or improve on the original’s aura.

Overall the CGL/Shimmy versions/updates are pretty solid…not always scaled the best, but not as utterly retard-scaled as way too many IWM offerings.

I thought Isis was the daughter of the real Thomas Marik? Wasn't leukemia boy fake toms only real kid?
>>
>>98872973
I agree with EVERYTHING on it except the intakes, they're too big and give the Marauder a weird gangly-looking walk when it's in motion
The autocannon being in proper location is a plus though
>>
>>98873491
>>98872973
It all makes much more sense when you realize it's not a classic Marauder at all but a Phoenix Marauder with a bit more style. Alex blended the Phoenix Mad and the Phoenix IIC Mad to make the MWO version.
>>
>>98873491
>proper location
Centerline is proper location in fluff since forever. Are you retarded? If you mean record sheets, then boy do I have a Thunderbolt to sell you.
>>
>>98873495
Yeah I can see what you mean now, especially in the cockpit area. Doesn't have those beefy ass shoulders though
>>
>>98873518
Now look at the Phoenix Mad IIC for the finer shoulders and the sleeker body and vents.
>>
>>98873504
Yeah I just meant the record sheet, it's always been on the left torso gameplay-wise right next to the hyper-lethal ton of ammo
>>
>>98873528
In the pre-engine sink days, that was quite well-padded. You have to remember, even the sheets are an abstraction of the real machine. There's a reason you have giant crit-shared arm/torso guns that are just a big arm mount on the actual mech.

Its so gay that the devs are so gay that we had a fun faction in the word of Blake that were interested in reviving the LAM idea and brought out 3 new designs, but the Wobbies got deleted and so did their factories for their LAMs and there is just no further development for them. It would be fun if the Jade Falcons or some kind of revanchist Comstar faction started up some LAM production and we got some cleaned up straight forward LAM rules. I'd love for a LAM VTOL mech or something, just more options for the concept. I'm ok with them not being optimal at anything, but I also think they can be fun to use, at least maybe make one that can only convert into airmech mode and be a little more optimal
>>
>>98873537
>>98873546
What's not to love? 2244 BV to roast a mechwarrior is peak Capellan engineering.

Also the shadow hawk design by pig is so iconic by now that it feels like the perfect evolution of the dougram.
>>
Do you guys stick to one paintscheme for everything, or paint different lances or companies? Also, do you make sure that they are lore accurate for the force and period or you don't care about that stuff at all?
>>
>>98873666
A scheme for every unit, as lore accurate as possible unless a personal creation.
>>
>>98873666
Nice trips, I have too many minis so yes to all.
>>
>>98873666
I have a few of my own schemes and units painted as canon formations. They're mostly MUL based, but not always. The ones that aren't are almost all explainable as salvage, some of which I actually salvaged in various campaigns.
>>
>>98873666
I like to keep things lore accurate for both paint scheme and composition. I try to keep composition believable, but it'll always be tempered by my own personal preferences. Currently I have four different canon formations I'm painting to.
>>
>>98873338
It's in the Getting Started Guide. I can't find an image that isn't in webp right now but EH has the illustrations. It's the one next to the Great Turtle.
>>
>>98873338
>>98873741
OK, found it.
>>
>>98873666
I've mostly painted one force for each House and for the main Clans out of the mechs most heavily associated with them plus some common ones to round it out, usually a company/binary. Sometimes I've painted more than one force, like I have Drac mechs painted in the red Sword of Light colorscheme and dark gray with red highlights (which also pull double-duty as Wolf's Dragoons, so I've got mechs like the Annihilator and Shogun, as well as some Clan mechs painted in the same colors).
>>
>>98873756
What's the round boy in the rear supposed to be, a DropShip LAM?
>>
>>98873666
I organize my units into "believable" lances and do a different scheme for every lance. Then I'll mix and match units from different lances for shits and giggles.

>>98873582
It's an unfortunate side effect of Mechwarrior Dark Age's leap forwards simultaneously creating and then destroying them, with the Wobbie's lore only being fleshed out later.

There is at least some chance they are still around since Stone's last words are warning about them coming back and most of their Hidden Worlds are unconquered and chunks of their fleet including the big Newgrange being completely MIA with the Blackout not having been them so we don't know what their big move will be.

That's because it fucking can, that's the point of the AC2; so it can skirmish with Mechs and Vehicles outside the range of its relatively specialized close-in armament. No a single AC2 doesn't make it good at it, but that is the point.
Like the PGI Hatchetman it's proportions and shapes are weirdly warped to stack a tiny head on top of it like a scoop on an icecream cone.
Also go print yourself some machine gun heavy mechs and try to paint the little fuckers and then you can tell me whether the machine guns feel too big after.

Weirdly, you are more likely to get those from Clan Wolf of all people rather than the Clan Homeworlds.
They've managed to get at least a bit of a working relationship with the Belters after they took over Terra (admittedly after a bit of tension as they tried and failed to integrate them, so things aren't fully rosy yet) and those guys are confirmed to have not just held onto Star League genetic engineering, they took advantage of Comstar's peace over Terra to upgrade it significantly without raids that Canopus had to deal with. We've even seen biological catgirls in one of the books. Clan science is some of the best in the setting, but these guys might have them beat in this field or are at least able to match them and if innovations are combined from Wolf wanting to get some of their space naval support/expertise as a counterbalance to Sea Fox and Snow Raven...

By contrast, the Homeworld Clans are going to be pretty heavily against it as a side effect of The Society's actions. Especially with the whole deal with Quadruped Protomechs and the "Feralization" drugs that render humans to be more animal-like in mindset. A monstergirl proposal in the wake of that being a part of the founding myth of the current two wings of the Clan Homeworlds is not conducive to getting Monstergirl Elementals.
>>
>>98874234
The physical version of the Core Rulebook that updates the Mechs has only come out a month ago. The rules updates for everything else haven't come yet, so you stick with existing Total Warfare/Other Books for those unless you want to use Battlefield Support stuff.

If we do get another all-in-one book like Total Warfare, then we are probably at least 2 years out as we're going to get at least two other books, grouped along the lines of Aerospace Vehicles (Aerospace, Conventional Air, WiGE, VTOL, etc) and Conventional Ground (Infantry, Battle Armor, Tanks, Support Vehicles, etc).

Might be even more if the priority after getting all of those out is Battle Value 3.0.

PGI’s Catapult is damn near perfect.

CGL’s Catapult cockpit is poorly scaled/proportioned. The resulting appearance is like a Super Deformation toy vs an actual Battlemech.

Ended up a bit busier with work than I expected, but finally got around to building out a more formal look for the Realm Generator, even if its not yet fully completed just yet as I might want to be adding some more details.

I probably could have gotten this out faster, but I had the very funny idea of creating a second Example from inverting literally every single roll we got for Namek in order to see what its opposite version would be. Might have slipped on a couple of them and the Relations was a bit eyeballed, but still got it built out if anyone wants to do anything with it.

I plan on giving the Namek Supremacy a better structured presentation and thereby a template for all of this, that'll also include the various bits of lore people came up with over the threads thus far. As an incredibly funny aside, even before we ended up with the flag colors that led to the Namekian shitposting, someone shitposted about it being a Kami praising general due to the Shinto roll and another anon posted >>98844513 in response.

THEN we get CGL’s update of “The ON1-K’s SRM-4 has always been located in the LT. It’s the ON1-Ka that has the SRM-4 mounted in the left arm.”

FUCK YOU.

Could’ve just fixed it in errata decades ago. But no. Ignore the fluff and logical development of the ON1-V and ON1-VA that mirrors the left arm SRM-4 configuration on the right arm.

I think the PGI mechs are too angular and multifaceted for me, like Michael Bay Transformers. The Centurion is an exception, it's pretty great.

The CGL designs work for me. I also like the redesigns that were done for the Jihad. Was that CGL? I don't get why they didn't just redesign old mechs and had to make up a new variant, usually primitive, to introduce the new design. But I thought they were neat.

Don't worry. This doesn't mean that they lose out on something like 300k production. They have all 100k dedicated to one class of dropship instead of 50k to 2 classes of dropship, or roughly 33k to 3 classes.

They could be producing a Behemoth per year, for instance. Or 71.4 Avengers (2816 spec) to give an example on the far opposite end of the spectrum.

Maybe we'll see some differences with the RAT rolls once I get those compiled (need to make sure all the ones on the list I form are D rating because there's a lot of E and F rating ones out there).

>>98875236
I plan to make a RAT where the suggestions are the more prominent ones, with variants taking up multiple slots to denote the primary production (those other variants of the chasis with the same engine will exist in the nation, but they would be weapons refits over primary production). But I'm also going to be throwing in a few wildcards as well.

Also for both the Dropships and the Heavies, I'm might be throwing in a "Custom/Unique" option. D-tech would make this basically be a Succession Wars/Age of War design, so I don't think that would step on the toes of the current Mech Industrial Complex one >>98870039 since its Republic Era advanced tech Missile Boats. Though I think I'll wait until it's voting period has started to post the RATs to really avoid stepping on its toes.

>>98874023
Based on how quickly the clans originally created an incredibly large industrial base a couple years after finding the kerensky cluster, it shouldn't take them more than a couple decades at most to completely rebuild the kerensky cluster's industry and logistics and build another clan invasion-scale force, assuming they didn't all die.

Also very fitting for a nation of pirates. And that it was originally intended for infantry and vehicles fits both with being a Periphery state, and having a combined arms preference.
Also, between the Buccaneer and the Condor, I guess the Namekians are really into Aerodynes, which sorta fits the whole freebooter aesthetic I suppose.

The nice thing about the Catapult is that both of the "arms" are easily swapped out for different weapons, and with the A1 it only has 2xLRM15s so swapping to 2xPPCs shouldn't be too hard for the mech techs
>>
>>98876141
If we're supposed to be a relatively advanced state, it'd be neat to have some variants of our variants down the line. Like switching the LRMs out for MMLs on the Catapult or tossing on some FF on the Warhammers.
>>
>>98876152
>it'd be neat to have some variants of our variants
With pirates every mech will likelly end up heavily customized if its privately owned.
Although the most obvious variant to make would be one that is better at fighting in space.
Jumpjets + LRMs already make it the obvious choice between the two for such tasks.

At the very least, there should be a steady supply of DHS by the late 50's I'd imagine. Especially since DHS was supposed to be common by 3058 anyway.
That alone would give more tonnage to work with.
>>
>>98876172
>>98876171
I'm betting a common refit is retrofitting with DHS and adding in JJs. A Hothammer has 18 SHS, switch to 14 DHS and you can have just enough tonnage for 4 JJs while still improving heatsinking.
Funny thing though, that leaves you exactly enough crits for Heavy ferro-fibrous, which the Lyrans produce, who we're apparently really tight with.
just saying
>>
>>98876180
Even if we're tight with the Lyrans, you would still be reliant on the them to ship you replacement Heavy ferro-fibrous anytime you get shot at.
Sounds more like an expensive "royal" variant belonging to someone who travels to Lyran / Falcon space more often than the rest of the Namek Collective.
Maybe on of those homeless nobles who showed up starts refitting for those who can afford the shipping fees of getting anything out into the periphery behind clan territory.

It shouldn't be? I could have sworn DHS is really common standard tech post Clan Invasion.
>>98876217
If we go by the idea that the pre-state pirate band would duel Dracs regularly, we could say that Mechs are tradionally seen in a special light(well a different kind of special than usual).
The main bulk of their forces were likely always a mix of various infantry types and light vehicles, for a mix of conventional military and rapid raiding force, with mechs traditionally reserved for duelling, wagers, and against other mechs when present.

It could also be how they gel so well against Clanners, because Namekian Mechwarriors are all about personal skill and taking any challenge thrown at them, because you look like a bitch otherwise. You could even go further and say the Mechs are the totems and symbolic of their individual crews within the collective band, and that transferred over to a dedicated warrior class when the pirate band shifted into a proper nation state.
Maybe individual crews manned around specific dropships often got into duels between each other as much as they did other factions, but it was never to the death. Mostly just as a means of settling grievances and keeping each other sharp.

The government is supposed to be a style of Hereditary Feudalism with Low Central Authority after all. Maybe the hereditary system is a mix of ship captains, Mechwarriors, and land holders making up Namek's equivalent to a feudal lord social class.
Maybe they're all loosely sworn to the strongest fleet owning house as a 'Commanding Admiral' based off the old SLDF title?

That's all just me tossing out ideas though.

22 Condors and 28 Buccaneers (Rounded down) seem like a lot of dropships to produce each year.
Or put differently
That's adding 36.322+64.638= 100.960 tons of shipping capacity to the sovereignty each year.
Not to mention the ability to ship 440 light vehicles and 264 infantry platoons.

And while not as impressive as some dropships, it is also adding the combined firepower of 22 PPCs, 66 AC5s, 22 LRM15s, 110 Large Lasers and 176 medium lasers from the Condors and 28 Large Lasers, 28 LRM5s and 168 medium lasers from the Buccaneers.

The feudal part of the system is undoubtedly whoever owns the factory on Golgotha and whoever owns the factory Cat's Bane, with everyone else paying them for shipping.
Piracy is just creative shipping opportunities after all.

I wonder if the reason why Dreamer's Bay became the Capital was because neither Golgotha or Cat's Bane was willing to acknowledge the other as being superior, so a neutral third party was chosen. (Likely this is also just where all of the various displaced pirates congregated during/after the clan invasion)
The post-SLDF colonization in a hostile system likely a joint effort by these two noble houses to build a hidden Warhammer + Catapult factory deep underground in a system otherwise seemingly devoid of life or civilization.
I wonder if the population of 6 million end up shorter on average due to the cramped confines of having to live and work underground.
At the very least New Bazaar would have a department/organization dedicated to watching the sun and making charts of when its (presumably) safe to jump in and out of the system.
They probably have some wild nothern lights all across the planets every time there's a solar storm, might even be a feast day where everyone goes and watches the pretty lights in the sky. (And because leadership turns off anything that might accidentally get fried on those days)
The constant radiation probably also means they'll have far more mutant plants and animals if the planet is habitable.

Maybe these two houses/biggest fleets, after potentially centuries of sharing a 'culture' of Namekians and jockeying for dominance, were able to eventually form a proper state by pulling a Hanse Davion and just marrying their houses, with Dreamer's Bay being the agreed on seat of their new state, rather than taking one of their ancestral seats, so as to not be perceived of favoring one house over the other.
Plus one main line house directly owning both Dropship factory pretty much firmly puts them in power, since even the free sailor Namekian captains who own their Dropships would still rely on the factories for parts and probably repair dotted along the planets.

>Plus one main line house directly owning both Dropship factory pretty much firmly puts them in power
How would that fit with Heriditary Feudalism (Low Centralization)?
The house controls industry, medicine, trade and pensions.
But every pirate is otherwise free to choose their targets within their means, making deals with the many, many various minor sub factions and dropship captains to secure passage if they don't have a ship of their own.
>It's called Dreamer's Bay because it's full of people dreaming of going to the stars, making it easy for freshly minted dropship pilots to find themselves new customers.

One thing I know for sure however, is that with those Mineral Rich Asteroids in Golgotha, at least one Condor has had its vehicle bay retrofitted into a giant smelter so they can do asteroid mining. We do have access to producing a limited quantity of Battle armor after all.

Yeah. On paper the ruling house is the head of state, but in practice while they control vital industry and key systems, the vast majority of Namekian dropship crews are mostly independent and free to do what they want under a semi-loose coalition built on a shared culture and ideals. The captains work together when it comes to matters of state, but otherwise it's like a couple hundred tiny sub factions in the day to day.
Funny enough, this feels like a parallel to both Fire Mandrill Kindraa and RL vikings.

Upgrading to DHS can probably done almost anywhere.

I don’t think adding Jump Jets would be so easy outside of a factory redesign, at least not without complications/consequences. So many variables too consider if the mech wasn’t initially designed to be jump capable.

But, it’s “future-tech” and a game so enjoy your concept of Battletech.

>Tries to reduce the odds of the two rolling identical or near-identical dropships
>They do it anyway
...
I suppose this was inevitable with the previous rolls.

>>98876124
This was just rolling for the stock variation produced by the factory. Other variants can be retrofitted, with some going into E or F rating with imports. As a slightly relevant aside, the 125-145 range they have for their engine would include the Locust-1P, which went down to a 140 in order to carry a PPC. As a Light/Medium, it does not require a special features roll and can just exist as a factory if we want, which gives them native PPCs production for such a Catapult swap.

>>98875794
It lost out to the Union for the SLDF Mech Contract, but it did turn into the most successful civilian dropship across the Inner Sphere.

Also, there is a very wealthy pirate called Vance Rezak that made an uparmored and upgunned version. It is E tech, but Namek would 100% know of him because he's active in the Draconis Drift from the 3040s to the Jihad. They may not be able to fully replicate his Buccaneer Rezak/Red Raider in-house thanks to stuff like Gauss Rifles but it could be a template for a Pocket Warship.

>>98876217
As with the aforementioned replication, you can make some local variants so long as they look like they'd be a variant rather than something entirely new. Buccaneer production is at 28.5 per year and Condor is at 22.2 per year, so they probably got a few more they've come up with rather than just outputting the 2801 and 3035 "Dove" Condors and 2708, 2709 (Vehicle), and 2792 Buccaneers.

>>98876275
>It shouldn't be? I could have sworn DHS is really common standard tech post Clan Invasion.
It's common tech, but still an Star League E rating tech in terms of advancement like Ferro-Fibrous. Namek may have some experimental/in limited production for Elite units due to their ISAW 6 Experimental (just like with Battle Armor) but that isn't standard.

>True we probably don't produce anything big enough for making a pocket warship, since the MULE is more than twice the size of our biggest dropship.
Buccaneer has about 2300 tons of cargo space and the Condor has 1570 tons.
Meanwhile an AR10 launcher is 250 tons, a Killer Whale only launcher is 150, a White Shark is 120, and a Barracuda is 90.
And ammo weight is 1 shot per 50 tons for the Killer Whale missile, 1 per 40 for a White Shark missile, and a Barracuda is 1 per 30.
Theoeretically they could throw on as much armor as possible and have a missile launcher mounted where the bay doors were while turning the cargo bay into an ammo rack and cram at least some number of shots in there.
They don't have TransporTech to pull this off as even an Experimental, but maybe from a distance the Clans assumed they did do that. Either that or they jammed in as many LRMs as they could. Put enough LRMs on enough of them and you got something that'll be a danger to a warship, even if not true capital weaponry.
>>

Compartments are what go in APCs and include a chair (optional), bays are what go in dropships and include bunks and bathrooms and a mess hall.

If we're talking periphery dropships, then there's also the Danais which leads directly into the Trojan. The Danais was the consolation prize the star league let the periphery make after Reunification. The Trojan is the upgunned blockade runner that Danais can be easily converted into since they're such a basic design.

But importantly, the Trojan is explicitly described as having many more variants and examples than what actually has a record sheet, each one can be marginally unique with different hidden bays and weapons in different locations depending on what the builders want to do with it.

That's kind of what I'm leaning towards at the moment, but I'm not sure what kind of roll that would be. Do I bother taking the Mechwarrior's stats into consideration at all? Their condition before it happened? The way the head was destroyed? Is there a chart out there already in one of the many books that addresses this? Perhaps there's something in the campaign book that I can find later.

Tacops has this
Destruction ofHeadLocation:If players are looking fora slightly less deadly style of play involving MechWarriors—specifically if they are playing a campaign—use the followingrule. Any time the internal structure of a cockpit location isdestroyed and the unit has an ejection system (not counting aBattleMech Full-Head Ejection System, see p. 310), the auto-ejectautomatically engages. However, regardless of the conditionof the pilot, the MechWarrior automatically receives damageto bring its condition up to 5 hits (so a pilot with no hits anda pilot with 3 hits under these rules would both fill out theircondition monitors to 5 hits, to represent the MechWarrior’s“skin-of-the-teeth” survival). The pilot may still take damageduring the ejection itself, and these rules do not apply in theevent of a critical hit to a cockpit slot (in which case the pilotis still killed).
>>
>>98878599
I'm sure they did. The clause is buried somewhere in the stack of paperwork they signed.

Here's the thing, if it does come down to a roll, my intention is to have it done publicly here, by the anon that rolled up the Mechwarrior themselves. Just seems fitting that way.

That looks good. Think I'll go with that when the time for the rolls comes around. A 2 or 3 on 2d6 is very low odds. I need something to represent the 4-6 range however. Considering the nature of these battles, I think some sort of stat reduction would be in line for it. The question at that point becomes, how much? Perhaps just a fresh re-roll of the pilot stats. Maybe something like 2d6 gets rolled and each number results in a certain amount of permanent stat penalties, as referenced by a chart I could make.

Alright, here's what I'm thinking now as a chart to roll on that works within my setting of getting to roll for stat upgrades after each battle. The pic you showed me did play a big factor in coming up with this. Thoughts on it? Open to everyone with that one.
>>
>>98879001
The permenant +'s instead of hospitalized for X seems a bit extreme, especially the +3 values. A dude never trained to pilot a mech in his life is still a 7/8.
>>
How do you resolve damage to a spot that has modular armor?

Rules describe it as an extra armor health pool(unless a crit hits it and causes all the armor to fall off) But it's a solid ton of armor. So do you have to divide whatever the weight of your armor is and then apply extra blips that would add up to 1 ton?

Same apply if you put 3 crits of modular armor? You have 3 tons of whatever your armor is on top of the structure armor?
>>
>>98879019
I agree. You can get some absolutely horrific injuries in Megamek and recover in a few months. It should be a scaling penalty to improvement rolls representing stagnation while recovering in hospital.
>>
>>98879019
Really don't want to do hospitalized for X. There's only going to be so many battles and I don't want anyone having their pilot be left out of it if the pilot is alive. Maybe I'm a bit of a sadist, but I do like the idea of the permanent stat increases to represent long-term injuries. I am however open to the possibility of tweaking those numbers. I'd also like to make it clear that if those are rolled, the mechwarrior would still get to roll for new stat upgrades like normal. The penalties would just always be applied on top of that.
>>
>>98879072
You make a good point and that is what the rolls of 7 & 8 are meant to represent. You know, it occurs to me that I also wasn't considering if a Mechwarrior ends up having to roll on the chart multiple times. It immediately becomes super crippling then. What about this new one?

And hey, I'd say that all information being ruthlessly suppressed until the graduation occurs and what actually went down gets leaked causing the school to be shut down could be used to make this sorta canon compliant.

Hell, last battle could be less of a test, and more the students having bonded with each other enough and having grown to hate how much shit has gone down that they all quit...but the Precentor has staked too much on the school to let it fail so a battle ensues as they have to fight their way out from the mech stables to stealing a dropship or something.

It just adds additional pips, to whatever location the modular armor is mounted. It'll be indicated on the record sheet. Per tacops errata 3.02, it's considered standard armor, it doesn't use whatever the base armor type is. Go read the relevant rules.
>>
>>98879544
If you are looking at Invading Clans, then Smoke Jaguar (though they get a bit weird in later eras) followed by Nova Cat. Jade Falcon does have some weight as the Vegeta of the Clans and nostalgia for the old cartoon, but does fall victim to basically everything they do being about Clan Wolf.

If you include the ones not part of the OG invasion but came around later, Hell's Horses and Goliath Scorpion are okay as they generally remain outside the Clan Wolf Attention Whore Singularity. Hell's Horses slightly less than Goliath Scorpion as the latter didn't enter the sphere proper, but the Horses counterbalance it by being the guys whoa remain the most Clan faction of those who did enter the Inner Sphere.

If you look at the ones that remained Homeworld only or only had brief Inner Sphere appearances, then there's Fire Mandril who represents the spirit of this place the most.

Both factions have some mechs that the other never gets.
The Blackjack is a Innersphere mech exclusively outside the goons for example.
And the innersphere never gets a Grizzly etc

The best way to pick a faction is to choose 1-2 favorite mechs and then figuring out if they are era/faction agnostic or specific to someone.
Some mechs are universal like say the Warhammer for example.

Guy by the name of EeZeE Company on youtube went through every single chasis in IlClan to find which ones had at least 1 variant in every faction across the Inner Sphere, Periphery, and the Clans. The ones available to all 30 factions in that era are the Atlas, Rifleman, and the Stinger.

Ones that are close to it are the Archer (which the Hell's Horses don't have), the Griffin (missing the Kell Hounds), the Warhammer (missing the Scorpion Empire), and the only one of Clan origin: the Incubus/Vixen (missing the Wolf's Dragoons).

Yes, the Incubus is the one clanmech available to basically everyone and the only holdout is the guys who were originally Clanner spies.

>>
>>98880297
Only variants that show up for Clan Goliath Scorpion at all are the 6Rb up until the Jihad/War of Reaving with no Scorpion Empire mention, and then the base C that goes into the Scorpion Empire until the Early Republic. Notably, they also lose all of their IICs in the Jihad/War of Reaving era.

It looks like they lost all examples of the Warhammer in the War of Reaving with a handful limping on. But somehow they are the only faction with access to the Warhawk/Maskari after that same period of time.

The cynical answer is so that CGL can sell more plastic crack, especially hoping that the influx of disenfranchised 40k fans who are trained from childhood to adhere to strict list building will simply discard "useless" mechs in a box rather than just proxy it as a myriad of other mechs that look near identical.
You must realize that 40k fans are conditioned to look for excuses to buy new plastic crack, whether its a new edition invalidating their list by removing old models, or just making the rules so dogshit that no one would ever run them outside friendly beer and pretzels games. In any game smaller than a full star the Annihilator / Bane takes priority since the Rifleman IIC is kinda pricey.
>alternate configs.
One of the reasons I like these five mechs is that they all have a cheap, shitty version for smaller games.
The Rifleman IIC 2 along with the stock Bane is just funny because it's so many UAC2s for crit fishing.
Throw in the Annihilator, Warhammer and Rifleman in their worst / cheapest configurations and they can all still punch big holes in mechs with all of those mid range guns.
Unironically I have won a duel against a King Crab with the stock Bane by knocking the opposing pilot unconscious with the sheer amount of tiny headshots rattling them around. (Not before the King Crab ran out of AC20 ammo and blew a arm off however)

Surely you mean people who play exclusively with 3025 mechs right?
Jokes aside it's not like I'd have the points left over after upgrading the Warhammer to C, the Rifleman to C, the Annihilator to C and the Bane to 2. To then also get the good Rifleman IIC, without my opponent also having an obscene amount of firepower at their disposal and being able to take it off the table within a few turns.
Surely no clanner with a rival heavy/assault star would complain about me putting all of my Large Pulse lasers in one mech to easily focus fire? Especially with an entire Star of slowpoke mechs that can't dictate engagement terms.
I need a credible threat to pull attention off of the Annihilator and Bane so I can keep firing those 8 UAC10s for as long as possible.
But I hear you, I will keep in mind that I need to tell my opponent that this is my distraction carnifex, if they are unaware of the sleeper strength of clan large pulse lasers.

Tournaments often limit the amount of pulse lasers and jump 7+ mechs for a reason.

In particular especially during the clan invasion CLPLs basically make it pointless to bring IS light mechs and a lot of mediums turning the game into wall of steel slugfests.

It is wild that C3, guided arrow IV and semi-guided LRMs cost a shit load of extra BV the more you end up using but pulse laser and targeting computer spam gets to skate by for free.
>>
>>98881854
>Tournaments often limit the amount of pulse lasers and jump 7+ mechs for a reason.
As unlikely as it is for me to participate in a tournament, how much BV do you get on average? Because it'll be a cheaper Rifleman IIC until I can meet these requirements at a minimum.
I would feel filthy if I went for the WAAC rifleman IIC before at least bringing halfway decent clan retrofit mechs for the rest of the star.
The stock Bane is a necessity not a preference, it can be a quite frustrating and under perform if not properly supported. The whole reason to bring an Annihilator and a Bane in the same list is for the 8UAC10s imo, the perfect lifeform and its taller older brother leading the pack.

Almost all generic pickup games in all eras run somewhere between 6k and 12k BV, trending to the lower end because people think it's faster. In reality, high BV games that spend all that extra BV on better pilots instead of more units go much faster since there's less whiffs in the shooting phase.

This is where the fun begins.jpg
>>
>>98882295
The math starts to break down at extremely high skill levels, but if you go all the way to gunnery 1 or 0, then you end up in situations where a max range gauss shot at a target that's sprinting to bring its own guns into range still hits on a 7 or 8. Anything in short range ends up hitting on 4s or 5s.

Hands are for LARPing nerds, I'm just here to demolish my enemy and see them driven before me, or die in the attempt.
The smallest unit would be just the Annihilator and Bane as the ultimate Timmy duo stomping up the board. For a larger campaign with all of that RP stuff I'd probably bring a second star of lights. Filled with fresh cadets looking to log some hours doing menial labor with those mech hands.

This is the Garrison star to end all garrison stars, especially considering its reliance on supply lines to keep stocked up on ammo.
>>
>>98882469
Union is the gold standard. Leopards are a meme dropship that stops working pretty quickly when you have to track replacement armor and spare parts due to its utter lack of cargo space. Every 8 points of damage you take is half a ton of cargo worth of armor. Replacement limbs are a couple tons each without accounting for any guns in them. You have 34 tons of cargo space unless you rip out the aero bays.
>>
>>98882497
I've always liked the concept of a flyby drop more anyway. Probably keeps the actual dropship way safer too.
>>
>>98882511
For poorer mercs you could also theoretically convert the unused mech bays into cargo, right? Most mercs probably wouldn't need twelve bays
>>
>>98882533
Sure, but the Union at least has enough cargo space to support a small operation by default.
It's getting into the weeds, but another problem with the Leopard is that the internal doors between its bays are man sized, so if you need to bring out a three ton replacement arm, you have to space walk it out the cargo bay airlock and then back in through the mech bay airlock. You'd be lucky to be able to roll a toolbox through the internal doors between them.
>>
>>98882497
NTA but speaking of dropships, are there any clan dropships specifically for binaries?
>>
>>98882511
>Union is the gold standard. Leopards are a meme
The leopard is half the mass and only carries four mechs. It's not a meme, it just has a different role.
>>
>>98882692
Its role is to rapidly insert headhunters and disruption raiders while 50 more dropships come in with the rest of the Division. It's not suited for independent operations.

Also the mass doesn't matter, they both use one drop collar on the jumpship.
>>
>>98882738
Yeah, that's my point. Mercs do a lot of that sort of thing, so to dismiss it off hand is silly.
>Also the mass doesn't matter
It does if you're going to complain that it can't do everything a union can, and it certainly has an impact on the cost of the dropship.
>>

Mercs do that sort of thing independently. Meaning they have to bring their own spare parts and armor and ammo. The Leopard is meant to do that in a fleet where logistics are handled by other dropships. That's why it doesn't even have a good way to get bulky items from its cargo bay to its unit bays. You're not supposed to be living out of it.

That's why the real move with a Leopard on its own is to rip out the ASF bays. That gives you 300 more tons of cargo, plenty for salvage and maintenance.

And add some crew quarters so your friends aren't ready to kill each other by the end of the first week. You can only hot bunk with your mechtech and an astech for so long.

You would actually be surprised. Relatively speaking, the Leopard isn't actually an insane amount cheaper than the Union for what you're getting. It's the entire reason the Union is actually more common in the setting than the Leopard.
