What OPR Fantasy army can I substitute 30 Reaper kobolds for?
Is there a warmahordes STL repository I can head to catch up on the MMF releases and maybe some ahead of time if they were ever made? I think Privateer Press started selling 3D printed models when it was nearing the end of owning the IP.Will it later have the Cryx Armada release? My LGS seems to just be Warhammer and the big card games so I don't feel comfortable spending money only to have no games as nobody wants to answer my requests for games.
>>98862326Isn't that Bones pack fucking tiny? You might have to downscale to cm instead of inches to make it work.
What game has the best ranged combat rules you have ever seen? I don't want any of the Warhammer mumbo-jumbo where shooting is important but you can switch to clubbing shit with nuclear-powered hammers as well if you fancy. I'm looking for preferably 15-28mm skirmish games that focus heavily on use of ranged weapons, with gun fight being the main way of combat. I don't care if it's modern, near future or absolutely sci-fi - I just want to see what a good long range combat ruleset looks like.
>>98862465Infinity or, for this thread, MERCS.
>>98862316TQMaschinen Krieger and the m50a1 ontos. Goddamn the latter has a ton of fiddly bits. Also, still not entirely sure on how to make it more sci-fi.
>>98862676Is Infinity actually a decent game? I only eyed it for anime butts and tits. What makes the ranged combat good in that case?
>>98862465Ultimately, it will still come down to rolling dice (or substituting some other arbitrary method of randomly generating integers), and comparing it to a target number.Because that is what tabletop games are.The only further layers of analysis that really matter are whether you can resolve shooting in a single roll, or if it takes more than one (there is an argument that if a single action takes more than one roll, your time is being wasted) and the "dice curve" on your number generator. For instance, one die has a "flat" (see; non) curve, whereas two die has a steep one, and the more die you add, the smoother the curve gets. All tabletop games mechanically revolve around the understanding of these very simple maths principles, with minor variations on the theme. And they are by and large, unimportant, as long as they aren't bloated to fuck. The real reason people play tabletop games is how the little metal and/or plastic men make them feel.40k is the ultimate proof of that. The rules are dogshit.A child could invent a better game drawing on a Mcdonalds table mat.You are better off picking something you aesthetically vibe with anyway, because in all likelihood you will likely spend 10x more time painting and assembling your terrain and models than ever actually playing with them.In that kind of environment, style IS substance.>*continues to rant and froth at the mouth to himself*
>>98862842This may be simultaneously the most useless reply and the most incorrect take in /awg/ of this year.
>>98862759Nta but a combination of range and the reaction system. Evert time a model takes an action any enemy model that can see it gets to react. This can be to take a shot, so bumrushing into close combat as you do in 40k just results in you morphing into a leaky collander. Melee specialists still exist and melee can be brutal, but they need to be careful on their approach and make heavy use of smoke and blind grenades or get behind the enemy. Also it is possible to declare a shoot reaction when an enemy model charges into you.
>>98862759It is a very good game IF you can get into it. Shooting in infinity is the go-to method to solve most things as the game heavily builds on it. There are several modifiers that stack with each other and all weapons have a max range of at least 24 (shotguns, pistols) to 96 inches, while you play on 48x48. This effectivly means that you are never out of range, but hit worse. On top of that is the reaction system where every action causes a reaction that can negate the active players action (like 2 guys shooting each other would compare their rolls, say the active player rolls a 1,2 and 5 but the reactive player a 3 would mean that the 1 and 2 of the active player get canceled and only the 5 is a hit as it cancels the 3).But the big part are the amount of different weapons, their ammo types, negative modifiers, range bands and counters to negative modifiers. As you use w20s it realy matters if your successes are on 1-15s, 1-12s or 1-9s. On top of that you can add stuff like smoke to deny line of sight and hacking to deny countermeasures to smoke. Practicaly everything has a counterskill or equipment. An easy example:Say my O.R.C. with a shotgun is within 8 inches of your Scout and both have cover. It is my turn and i decide to shoot with the shotgun. My O.R.C. hits on 1-14s normaly, but i get +6 because we are within 8 inches. The scout however also has cover and the mimetism skill, both giving a malus of -3 each on my shot. The scout hits on 1-12s normaly, uses his pistol and gets+3 for range, but -3 for the O.R.C.s cover. The shotgun has 2 shots, the pistol only 1 as it is reacting. Then dice are rolled and things die. Usualy you try to make fights unfair by moving in a way to get the enemy without cover or engaging in his bad range so he has to dodge instead of shooting back
>>98862465you could check out BLKOUT, similar to Infinity, but simpler and less advanced sci-fi

Due to Gripping Beast closing down I will be ordering british minis to my friend who lives there to skim on tarrifs and shipping costs.Any recommendations for arab (crusade and so one, lets be real the fashion in these parts has not changed for a thousand years, you could probably use even basic spearman in napoleonics) miniatures ? >>98867268>Due to Gripping Beast closing down I had no idea, totally missed the memo. Huh, good thing I bought a shit ton of Vikings, Saxons and Arabs back then.
>>98865335>>98865335Good idea, but the models in Warmachine Tactics are very rough, texture mapping does the majoriry of the detail work. The models can be exported, but they don't look great and its overall more trouble than its worth. Sorry to bring you down about it. On the upside, I'll probably start scanning in my warmahordes collection next year, since no one else seems to be doing it.
>>98862465Black Ops has the best gunfight system I've played, just as En Garde! has the best swordfighting system.Mostly thanks to its suppression mechanics:>You can choose between aimed shots and suppression>When you opt for the latter, you place suppression markers on the target or the targeted area>When it's the target's turn, they can either lie low and skip their turn, or activate and face incoming fire>If they choose the latter, they roll one die per marker to see whether they get hitI love it because most suppression mechanics boil down to a "roll vs. psychology" check, whereas this one makes it a rational choice, letting you decide how much risk you're willing to take.

>>98862465Quar, unironicaly.Never expierienced a better shootout skirmisher. You got modifieres for range, cover, beeing prone and so on. It also got rules for jamming weapons, critical hits and support fire. Every attacks also triggers a reaction in which the defendee may fire back or go to ground which inflicts additional modifires. Also there is a unique mechanic where the emeny may move your models when they panic. And thats just for basic weapons, the spezial weapons dial it up even more. Such a great game.
Manitc just revealed a bunch of new stuff for Halo Flashpoint that fills out most of the remaining species. They also revealed what is called a board game, but functionally is a narrative campaign system with the first one based around CE. Most of the minis in that are standees, but there's also a new Chief variant with an assault rifle rather than an energy sword as well as an Elite Zealot.
>>98872934WORT WORT WORT!
>>98872934What kind of absolute dumbfuckery was it to release the covenant now instead of when the game first came out
>>98873120The kind where they wanted the game to resemble a video game multiplayer match instead of a battle from the setting.
>>98873120First one was testing the waters as they didn't have any clear idea as to how well it would go, and symmetrical Spartan vs Spartan multi-player let them use the same molds for both sides keeping risk down on their end and price down on the customer end, while reducing chances of rules fucking up.When things went well, they tested special characters with the Master Chief and more intense unit variations with Elites reducing health and increasing shields.War Games then came in, moving away from the 4v4 assumption to point buy.Brutes are the other end of the coin to the Elites of Spartan Equivalents and they used the Banished as that's a heavily Brute faction as well as due to the initial framework being vaguely Infinite era.ODSTs and Marines are then used to figure out balancing fodder units, while Noble Team breaks down the initial Infinite Era framing. Finally, you are here where they are iterating away from the initial Instant Action Multi-player direction with Campaign rules and probably testing out heavy, non-special characters with the Hunters.
Hey Anons, I'm doing some research. What would you want to see out of a hypothetical wargame set in a fantasy Age of Sail? Was digging through my old White Dwarf's recently and one of them was for the release of Dreadfleet, and apart from a gut-punch of nostalgia it got me inspired thinking about the setting. I've looked at Mantis' Armada but the models aren't sparking my imagination.
Ral Partha are working through their order backlog.>>98870473There's a couple of classic traveller grogs on the board but they probably wouldn't see your post here. >>98873817WellWind direction is a mustoptional fantastic featureslist of scenarios including out there fantasy ones like racing sky whalesmagic combat over weatheralso its personal but I would want just a list of common ship types everyone can take, my dwarves should be able to use galleys even if they are running ironclads normally because they are cheaper and work and my orks should be able to capture and use a fucking cruiser.
Does Gaslands have a pure racing variant/rule set? Beyond actually just removing combat from the game of course. I've been playing a lot of Gran Turismo lately.
>>98873817Pirates of the Spanish Main, but again. That game was my jam.
>>98873936Martian Racing Federation
>>98873936iirc the martian rules are more racing with less combat focused but >less guns in my racing isn't a thing I have ever considered personally.
>>98873936No, but there's a spinoff game called Martian Racing Federation which takes the game into an F-zero direction with barely controllable hovercars. It's in the same setting, but up on the decadent and not at all wartorn Mars, so it's purely racing.Instead of just putting down one template and moving along, you put multiple in a row and might lose control of your vehicle or knock out your drivet with g forces along the way.
>>98873817Couple of ideas strongly based on if its going to be a generic fantasy sailing wargame or if you're going to try and make it more unique. Either could be good, it just changes a lot of what I'd want to see. >general Movement rules with order cards and movement templates. Age of Sail boats were slow and ponderous, getting crew to do things or change what they were doing took time. Having to plan out your movement in a few steps and everyone going through those simultaneously would be a neat way to have the vibe of fleet strategy. Ship damage tracking takign into account rigging, above the water-line and below the waterline hits with different effects. Squadron movement options so you can play large fleet engagements without it bogging down too much. >specific Straight up alt-history the Spanish Armada had dragons and the english had fireballs or something gives you a lot of material to work with scenarios and campaigns already set up. It'll get a bit silly but its already fantasy age of sail. Unique fantasy setting. This one is hard mode and I don't know how to make that work but it'll have to be catching in a way that's hard to do with ships because its already zoomed out enough the details get abstracted. Generic base fleets with different ship sizes and a range of additional fantastical abilities to add on. Sea monsters and fantastical weather in all of the above cases though.
>>98862465Asymmetric Warfare has the best shooting combat Ive ever played, it mimics real life firefights as best I think you can on the tabletop. Which is fitting because it's a system meant for hyper realistic modern warfare and was made by actual military officers. I think to have good gunfighting rules, guns have to extremely lethal, where if you try to run at someone with a retarded nuclear hammer you'd just be shot like that scene Indiana jones - with the lethality being countered by cover and suppression rules, not by "armor" and bloated statlines and health bars
>>98874254>cont. An additional point, in Asymmetric Warfare guns have a "range interval" which means you shoot all the way across the tabl, but at certain intervals (every 18 inches for example) you chance of hitting something is decreased. So you can hit something across the table it you have sight, but your chance of hitting it is very small, conversely some jackass running at your with a power hammer at close range is guaranteed to get shot in the chest and drop. I also love the wound rules in AW, trying to simulation small unit tactics in modern warfare, getting shot or woundedt can instantly kill you or more likely will land you somewhere else on the wound chart, from a minor limb wound that requires you to stop the bleeding all the way to catastrophic wound that causes a dedicated medic with trauma kit to spend several trying to stabilize. Depending on would level you can either almost full recover in a turn or two or you can bleed to death, or if stabilized you will still need to be dragged off the table by another squad mate
>>98874286You are going to share the rulebook of this?Because I'm stuck with my tacticool game and need ideas.
>>98874296Sure, here it is >https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/458074/asymmetric-warfare
>>98874254>>98874286How miniatures agnostic is it? Hex and chit style? Just some assumptions on base size and overall shape of a mini? Or does it ask for some more detailed particulars?
>>98874389It's intended for squad to platoon sized ultra modern warfare, and I've seen people play it with 15-28mm models. Other than that it's completely agnostic
>>98874406How ultramodern are we talking? A more general Post-2000s combat, or have they tried to make rules to account for how drone warfare has evolved in Ukraine and the like?
>>98874421Ukraine drones are in the rules, and some near future stuff as well
>>98874421I've seen people gaming the Ukraine War with AW

>>98874491Too soon
>>98873930>WindI was trying to think how to make this actually fun as a tabletop mechanic and couldn't work it out.>>98874004>Movement templatesInteresting idea. Looking at Armada's rules (haven't checked out Man O' War yet) it has your ships just move in a straight line then turn at the end, which doesn't seem right, but I suspect they probably bashed their heads against the wall trying to work out how to let players move in a curved line without it being too complicated or cumbersome. The other major thing they're missing is more stuff about crew numbers, as far as I can tell crew strength is just a stat that makes you better at boarding, you don't lose dudes in ranged combat. I'd maybe make the crew like a second health bar for your ship, let you send dudes off in rowboats to board or explore islands or escape a sinking ship for campaigns, shit like that. Maybe have damage tables for the ship and have one of the options be crew loss alongside losing your mast or taking on water. >SettingWell ghost pirates are a must, what's even the point of doing fantasy Age of Sail if you aren't gonna include them. I'm never able to come up with cool "default" human factions for my settings but I guess East India style merchantile assholes are the natural fit. The challenge is you can't really model the crew so all the personality has to come across in just the ships, which is tricky (Armada fails at this imo, and Dreadfleet succeeds but all of its ships are one-offs for their faction). But then, is it more interesting adapting the classic fantasy races to the water or coming up with new ones that fit more naturally to a nautical setting? Perchance.
>>98875228>is it more interesting adapting the classic fantasy races to the water or coming up with new ones that fit more naturally to a nautical setting?I'd come up with new ones. As much as I really did enjoy Dreadfleet, there's something both confining and anti-theme about applying the classic fantasy races to a sailing ships game. My aesthetic vision, at least, would lean more towards the exoticism that we associate with pirates, the colonial era, and wooden ships as an icon of adventure. >Human Empire, Spanish-inspired, treasure galleons of immense size >Human pirates>Ghost pirates >Cannibals who take to the seas in swarms of catamarans >Spooky Deep Ones with sea monster allies and dark magic That kind of stuff is what I'd want and expect from a fantasy ships game.
>>98874286I know this from the guy that used to work for Spectre, and Spectre decided to go the call of duty route with v3, so how different is AS from v1 and 2? I've been using spectre v2 to handle combat for 5p Planetfall and it be a good time. Well, aside from my scientists constantly getting eaten by turtles.
>>98874389>>98874296It's the continuation of SPECTRE's 2nd edition ruleset. The people who own the brand decided to fire the rules guy and go more Warhammer with the game, he took the rules with him when he left. There's rules for assorted /awg/ stuff in SPECTRE, including John Wick, the Predator, zombies, and "The Visitor" which is a mind-controlling alien with wallhacks. It's all convertible with minimal effort. There's also a French guy on Youtube who's made an extensive Tarkov hack for the game, along with a solo mode and some COBRA-style cartoony villains for his campaign. SPECTRE made the edition shift right before the Ukraine war popped off, so 2e doesn't reflect some of the lessons learned in the last few years.>>98874286The thing I like most about the wound rules is that they lead to real-world priorities for the player. Elite operators are always worth patching up because they'll still be effective if it's light, and they're worth it to preserve the VP even if they're only barely ambulatory. Cartel 'banger #14 isn't worth the pack of gauze. It encourages proper recon-by-grenade indoors even if grenades are incredibly dangerous when things go tits-up. And vees are fucking horrifying, a Bradley or a van bomb can control an entire board as long as nobody can lock it with a Javelin or a drone strike.>>98874421It goes from the Pulp/Interwar era straight through 2030, essentially. The rules start to break down in periods before automatic weapons and grenades are commonplace, and the author has been actively using consultants from combat zones to develop new rules. Notably, it has decent rules for civvies and covert ops. You can just as easily game out the North Hollywood gunfight or Leon Kennedy trying to exfiltrate a VIP through a mob of zombies and brainworm cultists. If anything, I'd say its biggest weakness has been the lack of downsides for going on Overwatch, and how few published example scenarios they've put out for new players.
>>98875517>It's the continuation of SPECTRE's 2nd edition rulesetNTA but I've been interested in Spectre Outbreak. Which version of spectre is that compatible with? Or is the zombies expansion bad? I've been interested in (the good version) of Spectre. And Outbreak and "Out of Time"Mostly because "out of time" looks like I can have a "one rules system to cover them all" if that makes sense.

>>98875228>I was trying to think how to make this actually fun as a tabletop mechanic and couldn't work it out.Wind literally MUST be there its the very core of age of sail naval warfare.I have thought about this topic myself for a while and I think it could work if the players had the control over it. As in, weather mages constantly fighting over which way the winds should blow to best benefit their dudes. Of course there are also windless propulsion systems but rowing should limit the number of crew you can use for abbordage. Dwarfs probably would just build a steamship and be done with that bullshit.
How does Stargrave compares to Frostgrave? I wanted to run the last one but it requires a lot of minis variety that I don't have for Fantasy but aplenty for Sci-Fi. Also we tried Five Parsecs From Home this summer and it was a bit too much pre-game paperwork for us if that helps (rolling for patrons, pay, mission, enemies, complications, bonus, etc).
>>98875501Asymmetric Warfare is just Spectre v2 with slightly streamlining tweaks and a massively updated list of equipment based off stuff in the Ukraine War and potential near future engagements.>>98875553Those are for the Warhammerified Spectre v3, which shares nothing at all with Spectre v1 and v2 except the name.
>>98875606Warlord Games is dogshit for very reason, their toys are incredibly overpriced despite being genuinely inferior quality. They are worse than Games Workshop. >>98875835It's just a reskinned Frostgrave. It's a very fun game, but unfortunately it keeps the same problem they makes Frostgrave unenjoyable, which is the D20 combat system.
>>98875898I've heard some anon says the D20 kept the game bouncy enough so you ranking up victory after victory doesn't de facto make you win the whole campaign as other players still have a chance to come back at you with a lucky roll.
>>98872934Board seems fuck tiny for the amount of minis. Is this convenant vs covenant?
>>98876068Seems like a dumb cope to justify swingyness. It obviously wasn't the author intent because he tried to minimize it with switching to D10s with Silver Bayonet. It's dumb cope because even in a D6 system you can kill the most powerful foe by rolling a 6. Even if that was the intent with the D20 system, it still doesn't change the fact that it's awkward and unintuitive to play and generally not very fun compared to most other games combat. Like I said, I like the xgrave system of games, especially Silver Bayonet, but the combat is its biggest weakness
>>98876864Baseline they started with is 4 Spartans vs 4 Spartans. Fodder like the grunts and jackals will be cheaper that will allow for more units under the points system, but you aren't reaching excessive numbers. They give a lot of minis so that one box can build both sides forces while having a bit of extra that allows for at least some customization rather than making both rigid if you're using one box for both players.
>>98876938Do you recommend switching to D10 like the author tried with Silver Bayonet or did that failed to fix the problem?
>>98875228I'd make every ship have its own movement templates (or access to certain groups based on the manoeuvrability). And have the wind direction allow or disallow certain templates. For example if the wind is against you, you can only do very short straight forward moves, but long curves to the side are allowed. You'd need some actual experience with sailing to make plausible movement for this I think.I also think rules and scenarios for coastal bombardment would be great. Personally I don't give too much of a shit about lining up some fleets and rolling dice until one side is at the bottom. And nobody wants to play the side getting T-crossed so fleet battles are always going to be symmetric which is boring.
>>98875889>Those are for the Warhammerified Spectre v3Not even the good kind of Warhammer that even some /awg/tists here say was good like older editions? Either way I am a bit saddened that is the case.Do you by chance know of a wargame that is a wargame equivalent of a "universal TTRPG system?"
>>98877537>Do you by chance know of a wargame that is a wargame equivalent of a "universal TTRPG system?"Hordes of the Things maybe ?
>>98877257>For example if the wind is against you, you can only do very short straight forward movesYou cannot sail directly into the wind, and in the age of sail no ship can sail in like a 45° angle from the wind. Nowadays super high performance racing rigs can get like 30° to the wind, but it's pretty much impossible in the Age of Sail. The only boats that would sail head on would be oarred vessels, which would have to go through the length process of stowing all their sails first, and it would be extremely slow moving because they are moving again wind that's pushing them backwards. In fact, square rigged vessels of the era that tried directly into the wind would actually start moving backwards. Fore/aft ships like schooners or sloop would be caught in irons and their sails would just flap violently in the wind and they're be dead in the water until the wind turns them back to an angle where their sails can catch enough wind to regain some forward movement. During this time they would be vulnerable and it would mean certain death if it happened during a battle. No captain would let this happen.

>>98877599I've never played it but I read you can customize every part of a unit to the point where the game becomes a bit bland.
Fascinated by Twilight. Just one guy(?) working away on his own world
>>98877537>Do you by chance know of a wargame that is a wargame equivalent of a "universal TTRPG system?"There are a few but they're inherently limited by having to abstract the differences in how modern firearms changed things quite a bit. The Portable Wargame Companion is fun, its simple but easy to adapt to whatever era, add dragons or hover tanks. Horde of the Things is the fantastical De Bellis Antiquitatis, not sure if anyone's made a futuristic war version but its not too difficult to put together I suspect. Lion, Dragon and Xenos Rampant are all interrelated generics with shared rules although Xenos gets different enough its not exactly compatible. Not the worst, not the best, has some command friction mechanics that are divisive. I haven't played Universal Soldier since I was a kid, old RAFM generic wargame. Its from the 70s so it'll feel like it, but its neat to look at.
>>98877648Same. Don't care much for his gungan hyperfixation but I'll start collecting his fauna next year to populate my tables.

>>98877569>>98877257>ship movement and points of sail It is hard not to get autistic about this but I will try. Movement templates based on ship class could work. It gets into the messyness of ship classes but that can be made into 4 categories so we can move on with our lives. Breaking points of sail down into 4 groups of >Irons, rowing only, shortest measurement on template >Upwind, 30 degree angle from front of ship base, number of tacks based on class >Abeam, 10 degree angle from front of ship base for leeward motion >Downwind, no deviationand it roughly works without getting into the minutia of points of sail, true wind, boat wind, apparent wind, gusts, lifts, headers, sailing by the lee, wind shadow, trim, reefing, etc. So a set of templates for each class keeps it to one rowing template per class with distance based on point of sail, and 3 templates per class for the other points. Classes could be simplified into 1st Rate (large, slow, many guns), Ships of the Line (medium, average, still has decent guns), Frigates (I know this is already fucked because what constitutes a friggate and what sort is messy but its not worth getting into for a fantasy game, faster, lighter) and sloops/schooners/cutters (fastest, lightest) and then the different factions can have different things that change the movement rules. I am already failing at not being autistic and we haven't gotten into if and how wind speed effects movement. I like the template idea because it makes it easy to build in preplanned movement and avoids protractors but its getting cluttered.
>>98862316How is Wargames Atlantic's Death Fields wargame? And when will the heavy infantry for the damned come out? Also I can't for the love of myself find good 28mm heroic scale zombie STLs that have similar design ques like the WGA zombies in just wearing rags so they can fit in as many different settings/genres as possible.
>>98874547Oh man I've been wanting to see someone work on these for a while. How do they scale with other 25-28mm minis? Reaper for example? Is RPL selling them yet? As for similar aesthetics, there's the tekumel project. Not sure if anything is still in production tho... Contacted him a year ago and he said he might open during the summer.
What are the best /awg/ if I intend to just buy 3D prints from people selling prints (finished prints, not the STLs).
>>98878384Pretty much any. There's so many STLs out there for every flavor to choose from. And there's a lot of sellers that'll print out what you want. It comes down to what flavor of game are you looking for.
So is OPR just not going to release their so called annual update this month or what?
>>98877648It's interesting this never caught on like Quar did
>>98878920Quar's been around for around 20 years or something though

>>98877257>Personally I don't give too much of a shit about lining up some fleets and rolling dice until one side is at the bottom. >>98880500OPR's entire purpose is being GW crap for disillusioned GW fanboys. They only just started pretending that they're their own distinct thing.
>>98878920It never will if they do not invest in plastic miniatures
>>98880500Because that is where the vast majority of players (and their wallets) are located. Why would any wargaming company not want to be like GW? Why would any company not like to have a money printing machine like 40k?
>>98880500Seems like people love rules churn these days, they think it keeps their games fresh.
>>98880500Because people are addicted to hype.We stop bullying them into suicide and as a result entire industries operate like a fucking live service model.
>>98878160I only skimmed it, looked uninteresting and might have been one of those moments where the business forgot what their deal was >making off brand 40k kits and briefly thought they were their own thing.
>>98879583Check out tMan O'War, its a bit overly fiddly but is very kitchen table (with some side tables because there's a lot of cards and junk). It does terrain and fleet battles without becoming historical recreation. The difficult space is making some mechanics that are boat movement evocative and add meaningful gameplay choices, tactics and strategy, without becoming more than landlubbers can handle. Sailing is hard to simplify because it has so many simultaneous variables so its a challenging thing to pull off. It could be kept fairly clean with just >wind speed, wind direction, boat direction, boat class but you're already at 3 more things than most people's brains want to deal with for fun that are different enough from any way they've ever had to move in the world its a hard sell.
Alright Anons I'm trying to find a specific Redwall inspired skirmish game. It was shilled on the board a while ago and I can't find it again but you had things like Bat Inquisitors and a Spider Cult that has enslaved Ants to its weird religion. It's not Burrows and Badgers.
>>98878160Read it and the only thing interesting is the stress mechanic. Biggest issue is that the WGA site requires you to use the shopping cart to download the fucking rules.
>>98878920I believe the lore on the subject as I understand it is.>GW delayed the release of a model>delay caused warhammer youtuber to lose their content for their scheduled video to feed the algorithm hamster wheel>they needed algorithm fulfillment content to keep up their monetization income>saw they got some quar on a whim, so made a video on that so they could keep up on gaming the algorithm hamster wheel system Being a GW youtuber they had a decent sized audience and it brought Quar from obscurity to the public mind. I also like Dreadfleets idea of having random damage cards, like a cannonball can randomly kill your first mate or your steering wheel, its a natural extension of the damage tables for vehicles you had in old-school 40k. I think I'm gonna make a google doc that lose interest in after a few days and never return to.
>>98883491This template is a bit retarded. In an actual broadside naval volley literally every cannon will be aimed at the opponent gundeck or just below the waterline. No one will be aiming at the focsle except some swivel guns on the deck
>>98883652Kek this >enemy has thirty point blank 32lb broadsides pointed directly at my hull >Quick, let's aim for his mast, so he cant get awa-*BLAM*
>>98883652>>98883762Well yea, in a full broadside-vs-broadside encounter at close range. But I think any fun game would have the opportunity to take potshots longer-range, or have situations where you only have a couple of cannons worth of firepower, or stuff like picrel, the triple guns from Pirates of the Carribean on the front of the ship. Plus weird fantasy weapons. IRL they had chainshots specifically to take out masts and grapeshot to clear the deck of crew so its not much of a stretch.

Like it somehow out-GrimDerp'd 40K for the same audience.Meanwhile Firelock 198X is equal parts Peak and Obscure, and it's never going to take off because it's a wargame being developed by an actual Tanker, and is doing something original with soulful artwork and lore and even has all it's official books formatted as they would be in-universe.
>>98884404>it's never going to take off because ...Not having officially designed minis and not trying to ride the "muh alternative to 40k" wave doesn't help either. Firelock is really a different kind of game than what's mainstream.TC also got big because of the artist and le grimderp 40k killer. And maybe that guy knows a lot about that in particular, but fun to play wargames need abstraction, and just because a guy has served in the military does not automatically make me assume a sci-fi game he wrote is somehow good.>SoulfulSure. Other games tick that box too tho.He needs to invest into marketing. Heavily. Not only from influencers, but also literal LGS. If nobody stocks his books (do they even exist in physical form?), why should anyone bother?Take 5 parsecs from home as an example. It's a mediocre game all things considered. It benefited from the pandemic, but it also only got "big" Nordic weasel teamed up with modiphius, which translates into access to their marketing.
>>98884799>He needs to invest into marketing.Or maybe instead of marketing the wargame they need to invest into making Brigador Killers a decent vidya, and then more people will come and learn about firelock.

>replying to ai postsha, couldn't be me
>>98887606I was thinking you make the faction once, and then work with it. Been toying with it for a while, like in an urban skirmish where your faction's methodology of play varied on this, where there's a general scenario goal but your faction has unique ways of gaining points such as having your leader amass kills or only getting points if you slay foes in hand to hand combat.Admittedly, part of this is borne from missing the kingdom under fire series and having each unit led by a charismatic spaz that you only only loosely control.
>>98887877>I was thinking you make the faction once, and then work with it.That is a lot more feasible, the design space for randomly generated factions has lot of conversion and kitbashing potential. Not familiar with Kingdom Under Fire but command friction mechanics are contentious. I don't necessarily mind them as long as its not too swingy but figuring out how to include them with ways players can plan around what happens if one of their units acts unexpectedly is key.
Some more Steel Rift. I just fucked this game right up and got trashed so not much to say.
>>98887944The biggest issue I've had with the rules is that other models don't block line of sight so you get silly situations like this where four mechs can stack up to lay out firepower on one dude. It makes you vulnerable to blast weapons sure but it's easy to get around that unless someone walks into the bowling alley on purpose.
So I just got this model and it comes with a variant hand holding a laser pistol instead of a skull. I like the idea, but don't really have any games where that would make sense. What games would that make sense in?
>>98884799>How does this translate into a good game?Shitloads of playtesting and years of development. It started as homebrew in the Brigador discord, which is full of military nerds. Firelock is fantasy as run by military nerds, it's a fantasy world that's been bootstrapped into the nuclear age as the main guy's worldbuilding project. It's been 99% Tabletop Simulator battles so far. There are official minis. Tanks are all kitbashing alternative history."Good" just means it's doing something well that's actually different or interesting. Half the game is built around well thought out fog of war mechanics, a lot of uncertainty is built into decision making on maneuvers and positioning rather than just the uncertainty of dice rolls, with the other half being high lethality. It's not super-simulationist unlike other military-bent wargames, actual mechanics aren't complicated, the "realism" is mostly in the information aspect of warfare. The guy developing it is aiming for a very modern warfare approach over more classic open-information wargame designs.
>>98888633any warhammer derivative. (OPR, Xenos, etc)
>>98888633>>98888698Yeah, WH fantasy used to have a faction of Amazons who were the descendents of space Alien explorers, crashed in the jungle, who still had some ray guns passed down from generation to generation. Their model line looked very much like this one - a woman wearing big feathers and a tribal outfit, but she's got a laser.

>Father>As the means for sending a message from even the outskirts of Felstad home to Challaine are quite uncertain, and I am not sure if you have received my previous letters, let me begin by reassuring you that I am alive and well, as are your blood children, both Tilran and Poleen. This is will be the fourth letter I have sent, and I have been in the frozen city for forty six days. It has been an exhilarating adventure. I know that you can only think of your children in danger, but know that we are taking every precaution reasonable. I am, after all, well equipped to foresee dangers.>One can hardly survive in my line of work without paying heed to signs and portents. For days now, they have foretold a great danger. Shapes in wisps of smoke, patterns in my tea leaves, and the calls of blood crows all tell of danger ahead. Poleen and Tilran both say this tells us nothing, because Felstad is a dangerous place. I have tried to explain that the magic sheds light on changes, but to no avail. Worse, this danger is not just to me. My apprentice, my captain, and the soldiers who fight for me - but also strangers in the taverns outside the city and even a passing feral cat. I have to conclude that whatever threat is coming is a threat to all of us. >This life I have chosen has its hardships, to be sure. I left the life of a pampered court mage, a Siaz of Challaine, but I can't come to regret my decision. In a few short weeks of strife and exploration my magic has expanded further than it did in the entire year before it arrived. When I return I will surely be the only candidate for Archmage. Two or three more months of this will see my position all but guaranteed. And Poleen and Tilran will be able to claim a place at the forefront of the army. Poleen will have her crown someday, I am sure.>Curious. The sun is dimming.
>>98888734>-later->What an adventure, father! It was an eclipse, the moon passed in front of the sun. As soon as I saw it coming, I raced to my divinations, to see what I could discover in this new context. As I suspected, the flow of magic had changed, and it unveiled new mystic treasures tangled in its skeins. I hastened to their location through the alleys of this frozen city with my siblings and our hearth-troops at our side, but we weren’t the only ones there.

He cast his troops wide, while I remembered what you had taught me, and had Tilran keep ours tight, like driving a nail into wood. >>98888743>One of my local hires, a self proclaimed treasure hunter who was really a mere common thief, took a crossbow bolt and died. >>98888751>I knew that the treasure that lay beneath the fallen tree would be the greatest, and sent our troops for that. Willful creatures that they are, it still bent to serve me. Though one of Malakor’s servants cut it down with a sword before long, it was still exhilarating, to control such a powerful creature. With mystic incense giving me sights of the future I was able to keep my troops alive, and eventually we escaped the clash. I acquired two fascinating tomes - one a book of chronomancy that I hope to be able to learn at least one new spell from, the other a fascinating text on creatures referred to as “Ragnifiers”. I shall return with this tome, to have it copied into the Archmage’s library. >I have much more to tell you, but the wanderer who offers to carry mail for coin is here and tapping his foot impatiently, so I shall compose another letter. What awg has the biggest chance of eventually getting its own general?
>>98892939I would say Halo flashpoint. It's got a recognizable brand behind it and it's getting proper Covenant minis now.
>>98892977Not likely at all anon, get a grip.

>>98892939Their own general in a serious way? OPR could if they made a go of it but they get a running head start compared to most other games. Not sure if the Starcraft game counts, it feels like it just started on its own but I might have missed it. Smaller games that are popular tend to get them for a bit while the creative juices are flowing and people are excited. Those smaller games don't have constant development churn cycles like gw games and aren't built on that sort of business model, thankfully, so after a while people have played it out and it falls off. That's okay. Not everything needs a general.
>>98873817The old Spartan Uncharted Seas game was fucking great and much more hackable / expandable than dreadfleet or armada. worth checking out.
>>98892977I'm really glad Mantic finally got a breakout hit with any FLGS presence. They had genuinely good rules, playtesting, tournaments, etc, and it's been run by people who actually play their own games and want people to play more games. For all the GW-bitching I honestly thought they'd be bigger than they were.

>>98892939The next grimdark YouTube slop ala TC.
>>98893539make it, i'd play. one plays the heroes, small band vs enemies with larger horde feel maybe? encapsulate that conan combat feel
>>98893539I think the beta rules for the CROM game is still floating around out there.
>>98893539Conan is really more suited to a tabletop RPG than a wargame. There's only one Conan story with notable big battles, the rest is pretty much all 1-2 heroes protecting a damsel in distress from wizards, black men, or the monster of the week. And if you expand it to a more general "wargame where I can play cool big barbarians" there's options. Pillage would work.

>>98894200>the Bambu A1 Mini is very cheap and gets good results.NTA, but I plan to buy a 3d printer this Christmas, for printing various stuff included minis.I've heard there was a problem with the Bambu machines due to some shenanigans the company pulled (I don't remember the specific). If I want to print pirated STL, will I be able to do it?
Here's the Tomb Ki- I mean Mummified Undead. Who should they fight against? I got plenty of STLs for Orcs, Chaos Warriors and Bretonnians.>>98894240No idea, but be sure to get the A1 mini if you go for a Bambu printer. i think the monks are my favourite barons war set so far
>>98889030>>98894914NTA. I did the math a little while ago, and tight black powder era formations as you're trying to model would most likely be rare in pre-modern battlefields (but fine or even still too loose for black powder battles). Converting the distances to the tabletop, the 25mm base to base is actually tighter than most formations of antiquity. So for max autism, the conclusion IIRC was something like 15-20mm for black powder era and 25-30mm for linear warfare prior to that, to represent the tight-to-standard formation of the time. And in an ultra-modern context, stacking up essentially cannot be modelled accurately short of replacing the models with a special stack multibase. Even a 20mm base is still two guys nut to butt./tism
tism not over>>98889030>It medieval it makes even more sense to have dudes able to go shoulder to shoulder. To clarify, medieval combatants most likely did NOT fight shoulder to shoulder. So with Dragon baits retirement sale does all his mold have a home once its over?
>>98895126>This has set my expectations high I might inevitably be disappointed when I finally play a wargame that isn't by Games Workshop. This is true, people do exaggerate how bad GW is (which becomes especially egregious considering that GW actually does make some really good games that just happen to be condemned to, or perhaps blessed with, "GW specialist games" status) compared to a lot of alternative wargames. But it makes sense if you look at other traditional games: A lot of TTRPG players will overhype how good their preferred game is and exaggerate how bad D&D is simply because exaggeration catches people's attention and is more likely to get people to make a switch that's potentially outside of their cushy comfort zone/corporate ecosystem. Same happens here, because anons are trying to compete for your attention against games workshop, the giant of the wargaming industry that has so much (often free) advertising via cultural dominance that it can feel almost impossible to get anyone's attention if you aren't shouting at everyone that the giant is bad, actually. It's marketing, anon. Pure and simple. The real answer as to why you should play AWG is simply because only playing the mainline GW games makes one an uncurious person. Expanding your palette makes you a more textured and cultured individual - and you can still have the humility to sit down and play some of the better GW games that aren't mainline. Like Blood Bowl. But those games belong to another general, anon.

Anyway
>>98897041Nothing against Oathmark, it's a decent game. But why would Oathmark be a top contender in a market with literally hundreds of dedicated rank and flank games spanning 50 years? The only reason you mentioned it is because it's just the latest generic fantasy game. This question is essentially impossible to answer unless you clarify what you're looking for in a rank/flank. "Fun" is highly subjective. Are you looking for something that simulates a realistic feeling of the tension of ranks of troops clashing, or are you looking for something light and simply that just gets you rolling dice?
>>98897112because oathmark is a way to play second age Tolkien with the copyright names scrubbed off and has model kits to do so

For those interested, the OPR rules update is finally live. After a brief perusal, I'm cautiously optimistic. Didn't try the new rules during beta though, so others will know better than me. Changes to the Skirmish-scale games seem pretty wacky, everything else is reasonable. I instinctively like the increased options for magic users and the weapon rules reworks seem pretty lucid too.Vampire Champions (that is, the new multi model vampiric undead infantry) are an addition that I'm personally really happy about because I already have enough Vampire models to make an elite infantry block for my army. You no longer have to match hero equipment to unit equipment to keep their benefit. (E.g. give a hero a shield if the unit has shields) I think that's a nice feature, I don't need to give my sorcerer a shield when I hide him in a block of shieldbearing warriors. Finally, they say they're going to slow down the update pace and stop fucking with the rules as much. This is the best news of all.
>>98898406>new battle pass season just dropped! I hate the live service-ification of wargaming. This trend is dismaying
>>98898469The only thing better is that OPR and the fans go "Well just download the old rules and play those!" without mentioning that they neuter the rules and point costs on a regular basis and you are locked out of the army builder app as soon as a new battle pass season drops. As a former OPR player, I hope they crash and burn because they are making things worse and worse with their scummy nonsense. That is before going into the Ranger program and the fact that they cater to the Discord cartel. Let alone before the massive clusterfuck that is turning a so-called miniature agnostic game into their own GW armies with serial numbers filed off, board game plastic releases and trying to pull a Trench Crusade with STL file removal.
>>98898469Agreed. Literally what's the point of "updating" a game that people are playing and enjoying just fine? Especially considering it's free

>9 hours of well reasoned civil discussion have passed>we are still no closer to identifying a better Rank & Flank game than Oathmark Based on my read of the rules today we can dismiss Martyrdom because it's just Bolt Action with a vague Crusades veneer. We can dismiss WHFB in all its forms for extensively documented reasons we need not elaborate on here. Oathmark is at least fun to play, so it has that going for it, though it also has glaring issues like the 2E orcs list and the lack of war elephants. Anyone got a better candidate?
>>98898866Bolt Action is objectively a more fun game than Oathmark and I find WW2 to be incredibly boring and overdone
Looking at Burrows and Badgers stuff and it's weird seeing a project where the core execution is phenomenal but the auxillary stuff is clearly limiting its reach and popularity. Why is the website such a mess, you could easily make a better one in Squarespace in a few minutes without even getting into vibe coding. You can't even sort the miniatures by their factions and I can't easily find a digital copy of the rules. Also they're not shipping to the EU because of packaging laws (just ignore them lmao what the fuck are they going to do) and the whole thing is apparently being done by 1 guy and his wife with no other help. I can't imagine having such a good idea and such clear talent on the design side but having such little ambition.
>>98899097Burrows and Badgers is so fucking good, it's simply one of the most enjoyable and well done rules I've ever experienced - yet you're right, it's completely hampered by the lone boomer running it and his boomer mentality thinking he's too good and doesn't need a younger person's help making a better website. >>98897041/awg/ standard has been Fantasy Rules! and Fantastic Battles for years now. I guess we could add Of Armies and Hordes.
>>98898406I think the parry rule is pretty neat in fantasy. I also like how the assault rule rolled shooting and melee into one profile.
>>98899238Nta but can you tell me about these? What makes them good? What is interesting about them?
>>98899285They both share the ability to make your own armies with special rules on top of a plethora of existing armies already in Fantasy Rules! (I'll shorten them to FR because yes the exclamation point is part of the title).FR in particular has rules for tunnel fighting, naval combat, and aerial combat (not base game, those were a later expansion that came loose leafed) meaning you can use the system for significantly complex narratives in fantasy wargaming. Honestly drop the morale clock from FR and use 6mm on 25mil bases and you could probably do a whole military campaign on it.That's another thing both games share, they're malleable when it comes to basing so long as everything is the same so you can use 1/72, 1/56, or 15mm. Or whatever the hell Conquest is at.Biggest differences are FR uses d10 opposed rolls while FB uses several d6s, and how units can be several bases in FB.
>>98896047Looks alright I think.I've decided on a Human Empire opponent army for versatility.

Mordheim "replacements" have been a dime a dozen for a couple decades now, and it feels like Black Death City is doomed to be the same thing - another Mordheim heartbreaker that won't dislodge Mordheim Proper, because Mordheim Proper already has an entrenched community that actively, definitionally, resists other rulesets. They'll play the core rules with nerfs to dual wielding and maybe even add alt activations if they're feeling liberal, but that's the limit. The only time that Skirmish games really take off is when they have their own identity. Frostgrave was it's own thing. And it did great. Black Death City doesn't deviate from Mordheim, so I expect it to be as forgotten as Wyrd Wars or any of the other myriad attempts at Mordheim 1:1 replacements.

I was a former Ranger and OPR supported/Youtube content creator and those clowns are a drag to deal with.
Uhhhh that's not good
>>98900513Explain your reasoning.
>>98900789Two and a third.
>OPR gets another updateOh for fuck's sake
>>98901180What else will youtubers make slop about?
>>98901180I thought OPR was supposed to be le wholesome escape for 40krefugees AWAY from the constant GW rules churn? Are the guys who make OPR genuinely retarded?
>>98899548>>98899554Today's prints: Mage council and cannon. Up next: crew for the cannon and 5 marksmen. I also bought some modular Landsknechte for melee units. No idea if I can get a decent FDM print for a war wagons or steam tank.
>>98900733A horse can rape an ass and produce a mule. Not the same species
>>98900199>>98900177Right, makes sense.I'll be looking out, as I've seen some secondhand units with 200 print hours going for about as much as a new mini. On that topic, is the combo worth it for single colour prints or should I skip it entirely?
>>98901190If they don't make it familiar to the drones, they'll leave. We cannot allow them to leave, it'll be a disaster for everyone else.
>>98901336Combo is not worth it. Check out the Centauri Carbon as well
>>98901095No wonder, I bet at least like half of the people who'd buy from them gives up after two minutes on their website.
>>98900667The problem with people always trying to tap into the Warhammer player base is that they forget the most fundamental principle: Warhammer players don't love Wargaming, they love Warhammer. Black Death City can be better than Mordheim in every aspect, but they won't care because it's "mini-agnostic," not backed in Warhammer lore.
>>98901278>No idea if I can get a decent FDM print for a war wagons or steam tank.Shouldn't be much a problem, at worst cut off the wheels or cut the whole thing in half and stuff like that
>>98900667The problem with most Mordheim heartbreakers is that they start off from the assumption that Mordheim is a broken game that needs to be fixed; then, that their specific flavour of fixes is what will make the game finally good. We've never lacked more solid of comprehensive rulesets, there's dozens of games that can do negative campaigns better than Mordheim. Most players understand that it's not a competitive game and enjoy it despite its flaws. The issue is not rules, but rather aesthetics. Mordheim has incredibly evocative vibes, the art, the layout, the fonts, the setting, narrative blurbs and even warband composition. The book has a particular aura that makes you want to keep a warband or degenerates and see them struggle. No matter how incredibly interactive and balanced your rules may be, how deep the warband options get, if you're not setting the atmosphere and putting the player in the right mindset, you're just polluting the hobby with more generic skirmish slop. As another anon mentioned earlier, aesthetics are probably the most important element in our enjoyment of wargames. There's stuff like inquisitor (or even the older wh realm of chaos books), a cluster fuck off half baked ideas that can't be played without house rules and yet holds a legendary reputation in the hobby. There's forbidden psalm and all of its derivatives, which, despite being mediocre rules without much meat to them, get high player counts and fuel very interesting hobby projects. Look at turnip, quar, even TC. None of those games market themselves as having amazing rules or fixing older games, literally all vibes and aura as the kids say.
>>98901854ummm akschually Quar has amazing rules just saying
>>98901896I never said otherwise, but the main selling point is the aesthetics, not the rules. Good rules is always a bonus.
>>98888759Update: Threw together a Rangifer out of bits I had in my drawer
>>98902311Runa and co, updated. On Tuesday they'll go dungeon crawling.
>>98900978I'm almost certain the "Incredibly difficult and expensive" packaging standards are either something you can just ignore or more likely a boomeristic>WHAT?! Bloody 'ell, new regulations? >Fuck that, not gonna bother >:(and it wouldn't that hard, I haven't heard anyone else refusing to ship to the EU because of it.
>>98903154Tons of Anglosphere mini companies are refusing to ship to the EU for the time being. That doesn't stop it from beeing boomerisms, but I think it has to do with the new 3 euro import tax.
