In the setting I am making, elves aren't super rare or overly reclusive. One noble family is even elven (well, more half-elven now, though the Duke and Duchess and their super immediate family are fully elven).

Depends on the setting.
When do elves not favor the agile, nimble and hard-hitting option?
>>
>>98807222
That's definitely some crazy shit goblins and orcs would come up with. Dark elves would benefit from these as it would help them do convoy raiding but high elves could use them as very fast reaction convoy escorts

You don't always have everything for every situation.
There will be priorities, a military oriented on different strategies and ways of fighting.
They should just go special operators on blockades, hijack the enemy ships and kill them on the decks
>>98807276
Did I stutter?
>>
>>98807293
Industrial warfare will always trump any small scale specialized high quality military asset (I'll use IJN vs USM in ww2 as an example)
>>
>>98807341
Cool, what's the point of discussion then? Do exactly that. Everyone does exactly the same industrial warfare, as you said.
>>
>>98807260
The Osa-class is the goblinoid small ship of choice since its solution for enemy warships is just jeeting a minibus-sized missile at it and hoping it hits.

The Pegasus-class is more refined and versatile even if the basic concept is the same.

Sadly ekranoplanes are fundamentally bad because they can't be used in poor weather since the air cushion effect doesn't work if waves are too high.

>>98807341
Peer opponents will both be industrialized, countries that are smaller and have no hope in outbuilding their opponents should go for quality over quantity in both equipment ans training, but they'll also need a really good plan and some luck to actually win.

Basically synonymous in nordic myths for dwarves. Seems like different words for the same thing. We will never know.
>dwarves
Stunty little faggots with big noses, overly long beards, horned helmets that would usually get in the way while digging too greedily and too deeply.
>>98811895
Dark elf =/= drow. Drow are a very specific kind of dark elf. Not every kind of evil elf across different settings lives underground, for instance.
>>

Frieren doesn't really have a well defined personality. I don't think Frieren is written well..
>>
>>98812046
Dropped out of the manga some time ago, before the current massive hiatus.
Over time, everything about Frierens world-building started to piss me off. And that goes especially for its elves.
Which is a bit of a shame, since it's one of the few manga in which elves are allowed to be powerful. Still jerking off humans the hardest, of course.

I don't wanna bash someone who was able to break out at 19-20 years old but Frieren really has highschooler level worldbuilding.

Kinda feels they are powerful in order to job, ultimately.

Serie should probably be the mightiest entity ever besides the meme demon king, but she couldn't face said demon king for reasons (because "hero party" has to do that).
Currently "scheduled for deletion: too old" by humans.
Frieren is a discount Serie but the actual biggest mage ever is a human that happened to walk by.
Frieren also wasn't the center of the meme hero party, a fucking "yuusha" human boy with zero personality besides a few memes was. Because yuushas are yuushas. (Where do their power comes from? Yuushaium particles or something, similar to dwarfium particles that make warriors skina d clothes not being able to be penetrated by full-power spear tips impacts).

All elves will of course die or fade because era of humanity (TM) is coming. Jobbing literally or metaphorically. Not sure if the author does the human>elf wank consciously or if it's just some instinct but meh.

Yeah, that shit isn't for me either. Have been reading it from ch1, mostly with growing hate as it progressed and get way too popular for its qualities.

There is just so much more bullshit about its elves - or the lack of it. We get a glimpse of their "civilization" before their almost extinction, and it's the most standard, boring huts imaginable. No grand elfen structures, no wondrous magic, no sophistitcastion and advanced culture.
A lot of anime and manga fail at this. There is one elf civilization and it's just some huts around a tree.
And what elves even do? They have their lifespan, but they aren't inherently more magical. If they even do something with their lifespan at all, and aren't just bored assholes doing nothing with their time. No increased agility, no keen senses, no connection to nature or the divine. Nothing.
Frieren meets Kraft? I get it that they are supposed to die out and have no sex drive. Yeah, didn't expect them to start breeding right in that hut. But wouldn't it be reasonable for one of them say: "Hey, we are both elves. We are rare. We should keep in contact and support each other."
Elves are just supposed to die out, no reason given, no question asked. Accept it, it's the premise.

What's the elvish solution to institutions and... Basically anything being populated by literal antideluvians? How do they avoid everything being staffed entirely by guys from the bronze age who still think iron is a fad? Is it just a psychological different because they don't age the same way as humans and so don't get bogged down in tradition, or is it just something they've worked around as a civilization?

Young Elves seem like they'd have it really rough, maybe it's just tradition for older elves to retire after they turn 500 and give someone else a chance to run stuff?

Temporary restrictions, constant rotations on set intervals, regular votes on offices and positions. Elves aren't dumb, they will figure something out. Not necessarily the perfect solution, but they will have answers to that.
But yeah, one could also assume that their psychology is more flexible to make it through several hundreds or maybe thousands of years (although, it's rare for elves in /tg/ settings to get that old). One shouldn't assume that they were made wrong, as a joke.

Playtest status?
>>
>>98839498
It works as intended, the base mechanics aren't really that difficult. But I need to finish the airship mechanics, these are more complicatedhow could they not, it's fucking vehicles rules to really test them.
Once that's done, the bestiary also needs to be complete enough to cover every enemy type. THEN I can ask for players somewhere. Or play it solo. Things like character progression and powerscaling can only be gauged by playing an actual campaign.
>>
>>98839531
>94000 words and counting with zero playtesting

I've tried to play games made like this and they've been complete disasters. Playtesting and iteration are the most important parts of making a game
>>
>>98839875

>>

>>
>>98839875
Airships are a bid deal in this system, the players will have one. It's not some silly auxiliary, it's a pillar of the system and setting, its tone and themes.
I wrote and ran my own games before, I trust my ability to create a game that works out of the box, with some of the adjustment, finetuning and fixing being spotted by players when actually running it.
Although, I always did some solo-play before and should likewise do it with this one as well.

You're 94000 words in and haven't got the core mechanic of the game nailed down? Sounds like you need to sit down and playtest just the airship part of your airship game.
Also vehicle rules can be really simple if the game is written with them in mind in the first place. WEGs star wars is a good example of playable, easy and perfectly thematic vehicle rules

>>98840073
No, airships are not the core mechanic. The core mechanic is roll under d20 against a target number. And I don't need to sit here and roll a die to know that it works. The game is fully playable safe for sky-pirate vs sky-pirate fights. You can make a character, roll tests, go into a dungeon, do political scheming, incite a revolt, explore a mountain, kill beasts and fight the bad guys, forge a blade, make a potion, advance your character, learn skills, talents and combat techniques. There are fucking cooking mechanics.

The things that give me headaches are movement on airships during combat, tests concerning the pilot and the engine, involving our characters that aren't the pilot. It's one of many sections, but a section that needs to be done and playtested.

It's like someone is talking about his cyberpunk game, saying that he's almost done but he needs to finish the hacking mechanic. And you are saying: "Oh so what, the core mechanic isn't done yet?" What the fuck is wrong with you. Don't make it this difficult.
>>
>>98839931
What is the core premise of this game? Is it an airship game first-and-foremost? If so, you've fucked up by writing so much before fleshing out your main mechanic. If not, then you've fucked up by not playtesting your core system before fleshing out a non-core mechanic.
Either way, you've fucked up along the way,
>>
>>98840125
>Is it an airship game first-and-foremost?
No, it's an over-the-top crunchy anime-combat game with an extensive class-subclass system that also gives players a lot freedom to build their characters.
It's a flying island setting and thus players fly around with an airship, and also combat other sky-pirates from said airship. It's a big game, airships are a part of it. They are important for the tone and theme of the game, but they are not THE game.
The 94k words aren't about airships.
>If not, then you've fucked up by not playtesting your core system
The core system works. I know that. You take a d20 roll under, 12 is the target number for standard difficulty tests, add your points in your relevant skill. It's not complicated. That part doesn't require extensive playtesting.

The more you write the more worried I get. This is showing all the signs of being one of those games that tries to do a million things but are unreadable, unplayable, somehow missing fundamental rules despite being 300+ pages and clearly just some dudes stream of conscious that has never been proofread once. I would genuinely pay for your game though noldorfag since these kinds of games can be interesting.

>The things that give me headaches are movement on airships during combat, tests concerning the pilot and the engine, involving our characters that aren't the pilot.
This is exactly the kinds of things you can only find out through actual play.

>It's like someone is talking about his cyberpunk game, saying that he's almost done but he needs to finish the hacking mechanic. And you are saying: "Oh so what, the core mechanic isn't done yet?"
Hello Shadowrun! Yes I would in fact worry if someone said that.

>that tries to do a million things
It's a dream game for sure. An amalgamation of many things I like and find cool, but with an actual vision and theme: over-the-top anime combat in a JRPG-like flying island setting.
I can understand the reservations. I too would hesitate if someone asks me to play a homebrew system and slaps a novel of rules into my face. Will be difficult to find players, if that ever happens.
>somehow missing fundamental rules
You start with one thing and work your way through. Airship rules happened to be at the end of the book, alongside the bestiary. This just means the game isn't finished.
The lore section is even more undercooked. It's just not important now.
>>
so how would you make a game were you play as elf concubines and eunucs?

I'm thinking the core of the game must be constant social interaction so having a in depth system for how characters act and interact with each other is a must.
Your main gameplay activities would probably be player-driven plots and schemes so it would hinge a lot of player proactivity. Having secret goals and agendas at the start of play would be good to kick things off.
To make it more elfy I think structuring the game time in decades with one "adventure" being a set of events, plots and schemes and then the next "adventure" is set for example 10, 15 or 50 years later. The player characters have "leveled up", but are mostly the same while the NPCs and setting has changed, partly due to player plots and partly outside factors (probably rolled on a table)

this made me realize I've never read maid. Had a look through it and I see what you're getting at, but it's so tied to it's gimmick you'd basically have to strip it to a 1d6 x attribute (+/- modifiers) vs. difficulty number or opposed roll core and then rebuild it. The whole favor mechanic fundamentally sucks even if it makes sense in context.

It's good inspiration and reference though.

>>
>>98844739
Honestly, I was thinking about an RPG where you play elves as the only playable race, with the special mechanic being that in the campaign, actual decades or even hundreds of years can pass.
You get your elf PCs together and they do the usual adventuring stuff. Afterwards, each one goes their own way, and the players decide what their elf does during this, which then increases their skills and attributes accordingly. Some may learn to become an apothecary, another one studies the arts, another one studies the blade. You could prepare some big tables and roll on events during this time. Some PC may go to war and actually suffer some great wound or gets traumatized. Or they win glory and fame.
Afterwards, the PCs come together and do stuff together again.
Maybe there needs to be some theme or motivation for the PCs to glue them together. Like they are chosen ones and the elf gods occasionally require them to do something.

It would need to be a game that can scale well. The PCs should feel become more and more powerful as the game goes on. Maybe a d100 system can do that.
Was also thinking: maybe have a different level of success based on skill level. If you are trained in swords, you do a standard wound per successful hit on a human. Once you become a master, you do a deadly wound per successful hit on a humanoid enemy. Three standard wounds = one deadly wound = death. A big monster would take more deadly wounds to be defeated.
But I have no idea how to translate this logic into other skills like doing diplomacy, study ancient scripts, picking a lock, craft a table, play a song.

Ultimately, an elf game needs to offer something that you can't do in a regular game. And the elves' increased lifespan is best suited for that.

it is spooky month shouldn't we post spooky elves
absurdly spindly thin creatures with elongated limbs and bodies stalking the woods, glowing eyes and long pointy ears, being aggressively protective of their woods and hostile to intruders, and nobody made a horror film about that, ever?
it feels like wasted potential
in the good ol' days people were always making up stories of fae stealing their babies and putting a little soulless monster in there instead
>the broken sword touches upon it, the drow are supposed to be scary, but I feel like it is always more high fantasy and never really pure horror
>there's that danish short tv series 'Elves' the baby looks a bit like a bosmerr and has poimnty ears, but the creatures are more wood people and less 'elves'
even though you could argue Nisse are kind of related to 'house' elves, but illustration make them look more like gnomes
>but then we'd get into a discussion how fairies, gnomes, spirits and elves are all related to each other and where it begins and where it ends
>which leads up to the question of when should a film be counted as elf-horror?
I don't think pic related is actually an elf by the way, I think she's supposed to be an eldritch being who just looks like one, she's got some tentacle action going on

Not as high as a male human with female elf slaves. Historically it also wasn't as stigmatized as women getting knocked up by a slave.

If there was less of a stigma for women having bastards sure there probably would be some, but the numbers would still be a skewed. I could see a noblewoman with a child from a slave who is treated as a favored child, or intentionally having one if elves have a special magic that half-elves can use.

>Thread question: Where are elves spotted in your chosen setting?

There are three major groupings of elves in my setting. The most numerous are the olive skinned elves who live in the tropics. They are known for their brightly colored hand woven fabrics. They are more tribal and peaceful and work closely with other seafaring races. The second group is wood elves that have several cities around the globe deep in forests. These are your typical blonde haired, light skinned, green clothes wearing type. They are the isolationist and militaristic. They mistrust other races and actively patrol the borders of their territory in groups called "ranger companies" The final type would be the oldest and first type of elves that all other elves are descended from. They started out as your typical "high elf" type. Now other than a few outliers they have all gone insane. They are megalomaniac warlords and necromancers. They act like vampires or demons and sometimes form brutal hierarchies over each other rather than operate alone. In general you will find them lording over a war band or fiefdom trying to claw their way up to controlling a kingdom they will destroy with their madness after a few decades.

There was sadly limited interest in playing sword world, but I did get two players, neither which chose to play an elf (fair, non-human races are more limited in their options).

Since the scenario is the Marmo invasion of Kanon and the players play as members of the Kanon Liberation Front (KLF) the focus is on wilderness survival and guerilla warfare.

Dark elves are pretty high level enemies so I won't throw those against the players just yet, but they're very relevant to the scenario since they're in the process of genociding the Kanon elves.

Since there's only two players I've introduced a couple of NPCs that use the character rules to give them a chance. One of those is a elf refugee called Clio, who is a shaman (like literally all elves in sword world) and thief. She's been coming into her own in interactions with the players as one of them is playing a human shaman, so they can discuss and argue about spirits. Her "secret" agenda is to get revenge on the Marmo occupiers, which might mean being a bit more offensive and risk-taking than the players would like.

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with her going forward. Last session was mostly setting traps for Marmo soldiers and then fighting kobolds. Low-level fights in sword world drag on forever I've noticed.

Nothing stopping you from playing a younger elf
Also if you're level the or something being a bit older like 100 makes sense
Also makes sense if you have an elf who grew up around other elves
But if you have an elf who grew up around humans they'll expect the mid thirties elf to be an adult and treat them like it

>>98872839
>Also if you're level the or something being a bit older like 100 makes sense
>Also makes sense if you have an elf who grew up around other elves
no it really doesn't. Humans considering 18 year old adults instead of 12 year olds is one thing, but unless elves are specifically stated to take 100 years to physically and mentally mature to the point that they're adult social pressure and customs isn't good enough as a explanation.
>>
>>98872286
It's just to even the playing field, there's no good lore reason. Otherwise everyone would always play an elf or else cry about elves being better. I knew someone once with his own rules for elves where they were more powerful to start than other races, but you had to roll a dice and get the right number to play as one.
>>
>>98872942
>but unless elves are specifically stated to take 100 years to physically and mentally mature to the point that they're adult social pressure and customs isn't good enough as a explanation.
NTA but I remember reading about elves in one of the Forgotten Realms that elves physically and mentally mature about 4-8 years later than humans. So a 25 year old elf is as mature as 18 year old human. I remember that what separates elven society greatly from human one is expectations. Elves are not expected to have a clear set path for themselves or to start a famility until 100. Elves between 26-100 are almost treated as a 20 year old westoid person is today. Yeah, you can do many different things in life. You can start a job, get married, have a kid or two, buy a car, but no one will really punish or berate you if you do. It would just seem like a rushed decision.
>>
(you) should play a delicious brown elf in your next game!

not FR
but in Path of the Eldar we hav e one eldar who is on the path of the warrior barely out of puberty
first path they walk, something like high school is the path of awakening when they 'learn how to eldar'- they finish that path by around 100- logically that means their puberty must last a long time, anywhere between 20-100
In Pathfinder it seems elves also age slower but I have little experience with that setting
other than the text stating Ember who is around 100
being seen as a(n older?) teen by elven KC

huh, I should replay that part, I forgot about the KC/narrator specifically mentioning/commenting on it.

Pathfinder might be one of the few game settings where it's explicitly stated that they age slower.
D&D has been flip-flopping about it, it may have been canon only for a few editions. Right now, it seems like the "adulthood at 100 years" is cultural, and elves reach physical adulthood at around 18. Drizzt also grew up at a regular pace, if I remember correctly, and he escaped the Underdark around his forties. The Tyrion and Teclis novels start with them being both teens at around fifteen or sixteen, already fully grown, and Tyrion was fuckin anything that had a pulse at that age.

>Elves between 26-100 are almost treated as a 20 year old westoid person is today.
No wonder elves are so horny!

I only played as an elf and a dhampir, and I'm pretty sure only time it is mentioned is when an elven KC talks to her in some flavor text
I think other times it doesn't pop up
>Woljif and her played together as kids, but he's an adult now and she's a teen and he's a bit weirded out about it
I question her dad's decision to bring her along in the first place, like it was a fun weekend trip

There absolutely needs to be an ending slide where somebody from the party takes her to Kyonin to find her mom and let her know that at least her daughter survived.

NTA but I thought it would be cool to see how Tolkien's elves age, here's what the Tolkien Gateway wiki says
>By their first year, Elf children can speak, walk, and dance, and their quicker onset of mental maturity makes young Elves seem older than they actually are. Elves' bodies developed slower than those of Men, but their minds developed more swiftly. In their twenties, they might still appear physically seven years old, though the Elf-child would have mature language and skill, whereas Men at the same age are already physically mature.
>Physical puberty is generally complete by their fiftieth year (by age fifty they reach their adult height), but they are not considered full-grown until a hundred years have passed.
>Elves did not physically age after they reached maturity, but they did age in a different sense than Men. They became ever more weary of the world and burdened by its sorrows.

She better be ruling that country from the shadows. Or not really shadows. More like, manipulating the country from the "I'm just a trophy slave of these fearnights, don't mind me"s.

>She better be ruling that country from the shadows
Of course she rules from the shadows, direct sunlight is very unpleasant for her

what's a good opening question for the next thread?

The opening question for the next thread should be:
>If this isn't a general, then why do we have a TQ?
>>
>>98882550
>What are special wood properties that makes elven equipment different from other races?
>>

She rules it from the bedroom. Its not a coincidence that rulers develop a fondness for the drow slave girl and don't take another lover. Or if they do the nee girl leaves or disappears after a short while.
