It’s gettin chilly in the mountains, half of the ride yesterday was in the clouds. Any recommendations for heated gloves when it gets really cold out?
    >>
    >>29134183
Heated gloves: You have to remember to take them with you and keep them charged, or somehow run power to each hand and plug them in.
Heated grips: Buy once for the same price, install, you always have them. If possible, put heat shrink on the left bar BEFORE you put the left grip on to prevent the bar leeching half the heat output.

Gerbing heated gloves, wire directly to battery, they give you fuses. Never need to remember anything. "somehow run power" it's called a wire. Also lets you expand to more heated gear in the future, ride all year.
Heated grips suck and stink because most of your hand is still in the cold. The heating element is on the wrong side of the glove.
If you're buying electrics, buy the heated gloves.
If you have six or seven braincells and don't mind keeping things charged - after all, these days we're charging phones, helmet coms, and more - then they even sell 7volt battery operated glove liners.

I genuinely do have severe working memory problems so having as much stuff be bolted to the bike/live with the bike helps me. I guess I'm not able to picture how the heated gloves connection works safely/conveniently if you're actually plugging them in. I pair heated grips with bark busters and have pretty thick rain gloves.

Yes do that so all you toy enjoyers can go away. Then there's space for actual motorcycles again.
    >>
    >>29134244
I can take pictures tomorrow before I commute to work. But you attach one pair of wires to your batter, at the end of which is an SAE lead. You zip tie that somewhere convenient on your bike, e.g. near the front of your seat on the frame, somewhere like that.
Then there's a y-harness. It's a small box with three wires coming out of it. Put it in an inside pocket of your jacket. One long wire runs out the bottom of your jacket, and you plug it in to the SAE lead. I leave enough wire slack so that I can stand up on the pegs. That leaves two wires. Each goes up one arm, and terminates in a male plug. That plug goes into the glove or glove liner. The box has temperature controls on it, or you can bolt a wireless controller to your handlebars if you want to be able to change the settings without taking something out of your pocket.
I can take pictures on my commute to work tomorrow, it should be 45 degrees when I leave my house according to the weatherman so I probably don't need the heated liners, but I'll show you anyway.

I want a Street Triple 765 RS, but I always put tank grips on my bikes and it'd be a sin to cover up the gorgeous RSes on the sides of the tank. Should I just accept getting my nuts crushed every time I brake hard? Why did putting designs there become a trend? BMW M bikes do the same thing, put the most distinctive design of the bike on a part that gets covered up by riders that know ball.
I know Triumph's coming out with a new generation of Street Triple, but I'm buying used. I've had a 2010 and a 2016 Street Triple in the past and wanted to branch out into something different, but they're just too damn good.

I kinda want to to upgrade/sidegrade from my old Ninja 650/ER6F (why they called it the ER6F in Europe is beyond me) to something that feels a bit less bargain basementy, doesn't have a parallel win, and has more sovl. Pic related, each of these early/mid 2000s bikes can be picked up for around £2-2500. Triumph Sprints are a diamond dozen over here and were never very fashionable so can be had for even less, like £1700.

The most logical, bang for buck bikes would be the Sprint ST and VFR800, but desu I'm not a spirited rider and I'm not even skilled enough to use the 75hp Kawasaki to its full potential, so they seems like the same, just a lot more of it. I like the idea of mile-munching cruisers but I've never really owned one (my first bike was a SR125 but that doesn't count because everyone loves their first bike). A Ducati Monster might be cool but getting one on the lower price of spectrum might turn into a money pit.

Which one should I go for? Any other bikes I should consider? I could double me budget and save for longer if it's a particularly enticing bike.

I already told my sentiments towards the Triumph and you said it wasn't up to snuff then.
Despite their power on paper, they aren't that fast. They're extremely smooth, calm and predictable bikes, none of that violent "strapped to a firework" feeling of jap bikes.

I'd take the Sprint RS I had over any pf the jap bikes I had before it and it's probably the only bine I kinda regret getting rid of.

    >>
    >>29134617
Yes and thanks bb. That sentiment is exactly what soured the Triumph for me. I think going slower but feeling faster is a lot more important than going faster but not noticing that you are,

    >violent "strapped to a firework" feeling of jap bikes.
yes please. more of that please. I'm a histrionic woman on her period, bearing quintuplets. Don't bikesplain me with your logic of refinement and smoothness, make me feel something down there instead.

Yes it is. I found the windshield to be kind of useless. I'm in that sweet spot of buffering. Adding an extender did nothing, so I sawed it down to a tall flyscreen.
I only really use it when I go for long highway trips in winter or when there is 100mm+ (1/4 inch) of rain.
Last week the city north of mine got 400mm (an inch and half) of rain in about 4 hours.

It always gets dead this time of year. Most people don't ride in the cold, and much of North America and Europe is seeing temperature in the 30's and 40's in the mornings by now.

Im eyeing the 1997 BMW f650 as my next bike and first big bike, probably for summer of next year. Its the only BMW bike interesting me, so I wanted to know from anyone if it's an old bike I should avoid, or if there's anything I should look out for. I'm in the midwest united states and the prices I've seen have been as low as 2k and as high as 4500.

(almost) new rider here, have my unlimited power final exam next month, ive been looking at used 600/650 bikes, my search basically narrowed down to these bikes

    >Suzuki SV650s early 2000's
    >Yamaha FZ6
    >Kawasaki Versys 650 (post 2020 because the versions before that look like shit with the cyclops headlight)

the first 2 are the cheaper but considerably less modern. Does anybody have experience with these 3 bikes? im curious about handeling/problems with the bikes that happen alot.
im going to a large bike shop this weekend that has all 3 of them in-store, to sit on them and see how they feel to me. also im in my 30's im not gonna ride like a retard.

It's a cool bike. Rotax engine is pretty tough
Common failure points are the voltage regulator and water pump. The pre-1996 Models have a circlip holding the front sprocket and I've heard some horror stories about it detaching. 1997 has a nut though so no worries there
    I wouldn't say it's worth more than 3k though.

Versys 650 engine has no sovl, even speaking as the thread's biggest p-twin enjoyer. I'd try the FZ6 to experience four cylinders, if it's not for you you can always trade it for an SV650.

Small bikes are just more practical. These days a 500cc engine can do highway speeds comfortably and it's a hell of a lot cheaper. Small bikes are filling the niche cars had for a lot of people.

I'll be honest, I kind of just embrace being a squid when when I'm in uniform. All I wear are a helmet and gloves, and even in the winter I just wear my cold weather softshell jacket instead of a riding jacket. I get all suited and booted when I'm going for a proper rip, but I quite frankly just can't be fucked to change into a separate set of gear when I already have to bring a fuck ton of work gear with me on a daily basis. I feel like a movie star riding around in my flight suit though, even if they're basically the same as wearing pajamas.

    >These days a 500cc engine can do highway speeds comfortably and it's a hell of a lot cheaper.
Lying piece of shit. The new Kawasaki Versys 650 could barely hold 120 kmh, was whining like it's gonna explore and burning 2L more fuel than my litre+ bike. The engine is from Ninja 650 btw. This displacement is an absolute minimum for the highway and even then it's a struggle to ride like that for more than 50km.
    >>
    >>29136082
I ride a 500cc scrambler and it can reliably get to 100 miles per hour. It comfortably does 90. I don't know what you're doing wrong.
    >>
    >>29136082
My NC700 (god bike, btw) only makes 50 horses and I routinely ride it for 6 hours a day on the highway going 75mph sustained.
For a Versys 650 to struggle like that you must weight 400 pounds or something. Or you're lying.
    >>
    >>29136092
It's funny because I have ridden my 500cc scambler, which is not a particularly fast modern 500, at between 75-90mph for hours at a time and I actually am a fat guy. I had the thing more or less doing 75 miles per hour for a 750 mile ride in one day without issues. Rode from missouri to pennsylvania. The chain wasn't happy by the end of it but the rest of the bike didn't seem to mind.

Why is the ZX4R so hated here? I hear more of the ZX6R being hated, but mostly due of the retards riding them making tiktok videos.

Also motorcycle_files aka "look at little angus" on IG is fucking hilarious, he also is one that says ZX4R > ZX6R, but maybe that has to be due of 600s, the kawi 636 is the weakest of the Moto2 ready bikes, and sadly is the only one still around since Yamaha killed the R6

    >>29134734
Nice, hows the meteor holding up with the luggage?
    >>
For me personally something like 70 horses seems like the bare minimum to be both comfortable and safe in all conditions. If it was time like 20 years ago, I'd say 50 HP is fine. But now cars are faster and you need to match that because you still want to get away from dangerous situations with a flick of a wrist. And where I live many cars are powerful enough to do quick overtakes so it's expected for a bike to be able to do the same to make things flow smoothly.

No, we're talking about the ZX4RR that came out in 23 or 24 (I don't remember), it's a 4 cylinder that makes some anons froth at the mouth, like this guy>>29136154

It's still a 400cc, it's not going to blow your socks off. Uncorked it only makes like 75hp. It's simply a small four cylinder for the love of high revs.

Do you just not like the way an engine sounds? You can stay at 6000rpm all day and make 50 horsepower, that doesn't stress the engine in the slightest

    >>29136124
who claimed 100mph? you have to invent things to seem sensible. Both myself and the fellow with the scrambler report 75mph sustained comfort. Maybe you're particularly sensitive to engine noise or vibration, I suggest ear plugs and bar end weights.

    >>29136133
    >i'm gonna get away from the dangerous situation by speeding up
I prefer to get away from dangerous situations by slowing down. There are times where I see something coming and I think "I could avoid this if I were on a faster bike by speeding up, but I'll have to slow down instead." That's okay.
    >>
    >>29136208
Slowing down is more dangerous than accelerating to get around the issue. You need to get away from the fuckery as fast as possible. Slowing down just keeps you near the danger for longer.
    >>
    >>29136230
Approximately the danger moves away from you at 1.5 feet per second per mile you slow down or speed up. I think even a fast bike will slow down from 75 to 50 to 35 faster than it can speed up from 75 to 100 to 115.
You can probably construct a scenario in your head in which speeding up is the superior option, but it's difficult to construct a scenario in which speeding up is a superior option and it's also the ONLY option.
    >>
    >>29136208
Sure I also prefer to chill and slow down. But sometimes you are surrounded by faggots that deliberately stick close to you, box you in, or suddenly start driving at the exact speed to leave you. And sometimes you can get some sketchy shit with merging because it's simply not easy for others to judge speed of a bike and distance to it (nobody's fault, bikes just don't proportionally fill the field of view at the same rate as wider vehicles do as they approach).
    >>
    >>29136230
I tries explaining this multiple times to my friend with his fz6
Boomera glued to the news hear one false fabricated story about "the danger of speeding" and now its ruled out you cant do that in the city deapite the fact it will save your life being that youre maneuvering on a smaller vehicle

I dont think he is going to get his license next yet, he failed this year already 5 mins into his exam because the instructor didnt feel safe behind him
5 mins into a construction zone near the facility while it was raining all sub 40kph

    Yeaaaaaah
    >>
    >>29136239
*leave you in the blind spot
    >>
    >>29136235
I think the issue with that is that the situation is dangerous behind you as well as in front of you if you slow down. If you accelerate through it the danger is in a single fixed point behind you once you clear it.
    >>
    >>29136239
Like I said, you can construct a scenario, but you've already made a mistake in this scenario that can be avoided in other ways.
I think for me the most plausible counter example is actually "eighteen wheeler fails to see you and tries to merge into you, when you're closer to the cab than the rear, and when there is no available shoulder". Perhaps a very powerful bike has time to accelerate ahead of it while a slower bike could not, while neither bike could get behind it by breaking.
But consider the combination of variable required. We're talking about a LOT of power needed to get acceleration by throttle anywhere close to acceleration by braking, plus you have to have made prior mistakes. Failed to see the tractor trailer coming up on you, failed to note that you would not have an escape route, failed to add slight additional speed to keep ahead of while there was no escape route.
I want to address your example the same way.
    >sometimes you're surrounded
This would have to be deliberate on the parts of the driver. You, being a skilled rider, know to leave a large lead time between you and the car in front of you. So one person would have to cut in front of you, while someone was riding their rear, so they're immediately next to you, while someone is ALSO coming to tailgate you while you ALSO have no shoulder to escape into to slow down in. In this case, it's not clear what rapid acceleration does for you, and the best solution to being "boxed in" is to very gently slow down so that the person tailgating has ample time to react.
    >some sketchy shit while merging
Merging shouldn't require anyone on the highway to react to you, since even a slow bike easily reaches highway speed on the on ramp, and can merge seamlessly, so I'm not sure the particular sort of scenario you have in mind.
    >>
    >>29136256
I'd also add that if you slow down from 75 to say 25 to avoid danger, and still get into a wreck, you've now wrecked at 25mph. Your survival chances are looking good especially with an airbag and helmet.
On the other hand, if you accelerate to 100mph trying to avoid danger, and still get into a wreck, you've now wrecked at 100mph.
So you have to balance the probability not only that speeding up is more likely to succeed than slowing down, but the probability of good outcome if the selected maneuver fails.
    >>
    >>29136256
By merging cases I meant for example when someone is close to clipping you in the rear when merging into your lane from a short onramp. And you can give distance to people in front you as much as you want, but it doesn't mean shit when someone is tailgating you and you know the traffic will be stopped not far ahead where you'll have to bunch up together regardless. If you have a chance, why not get away for a bit, slow down near the jam, observe what's behind you and position yourself accordingly (or filter) ?

Also you CAN get boxed in without intentionally hostile actions on part of anyone in dense traffic. For example, when you are in one of only two available lanes, the lane next to you is full of cars, and someone carelessly follows you close by it's not a good situation to be in. Because if someone merges in front of you too closely forcing you to brake it's quite a bit more sketchy than as if you'd be in a car. Firstly because you're squishy and secondly, again, because the driver behind you will judge your decrease in speed worse than when he would have observed another car.

Also mistakes- yes everyone can make them. If I mess up with stuff like coming out of on main road with car approaching too soon it's still good to have an option to correct and speed up quite a bit harder. Why deny yourself having extra tools in the toolkit?

    >>29136262
My point anyways is that you need acceleration, including when you're already at highway speed. A2 bikes just don't quite have the guts at that point. Going way faster than the traffic on the regular is not what I advocate for.

    >why not get away for a bit, slow down near the jam, observe whats behind you, and position yourself accordingly
    that's the wrong approach
it's less safe than slowing down very gradually on approach
if a guy is tailgating you, and there's a jam coming up, do you expect he's going to react well to the jam? or do you expect him to come up on you quickly, and perhaps misjudge his braking distance?
by braking slowly for a huge distance you give him a huge margin to slow down, and when you reach the jam you're already at the right speed to start filtering if it's slow enough. if it's not slow enough, you've caused the tailgater to slow down with a safe margin.
    >why deny yourself tools
i'm not saying a faster motorcycle doesn't give you another option, my first post i said that exactly. i often notice when "speed up" is an option i don't have available. what i'm saying is "speed up" is virtually never the safest option.
you have exactly the wrong view on how to safely deal with tailgaters.
if you're getting tailgated, and you speed up, 99/100 times you're just getting tailgated at a higher speed. now you're coming up on a jam at a higher speed. now you have to brake harder. now you're asking the tailgater to brake harder. you've gotten yourself into a mess.

    >>29136281

You can still slow down gradually after you've gotten ahead but you do you I guess, just know that if you get sandwiched at slow speeds you still might get crippled or killed. Filtering is not always an immediate option either. I simply wouldn't ever ride or drive assuming people have full attention or that the mistakes are off the table.
    >if you're getting tailgated, and you speed up, 99/100 times you're just getting tailgated at a higher speed
See, that's why you don't rely on this as a permanent measure.

With all that said, I would still indeed just simply keep distance or slow down most of the time, but first I judge the behavior of cars around me. There is an exception though where I would never pick the more passive approach. If I'm on a road with a single lane in each direction and I'm in front of a column waiting to overtake a slower vehicle, you bet I'm going to blast ahead the first chance I get. Choosing to not use opportunities will just either make overtaking more dangerous for others behind you or provoke bad behavior. Giving space for someone to escape a failed overtake is fine but still why be in a situation with irritated drivers in the first place.

    >>
    >>29136677
RC166 exists so you can but that's a racebike. But otherwise it doesn't seem to make sense economically. You're requiring more precise manufacturing with tighter tolerances and more parts in general that you won't find a customer for. Nobody wants to pay extra for a tiny bike that won't even perform better or offer more comfort. Big bikes like CBX, KZ1300 and K1600 at least do make sense as you're already in the class in which people are willing to pay more for nice stuff.

DESU it's getting hard to justify even bikes like ZX4RR these days that is 4pot, glad we have it.

If you slow down gradually after you're ahead you're asking the tailgating driver to judge speed and distance in a more difficult situation since he's now approaching you at an even higher speed

You do you, but I recommend taking defensive riding and driving courses, where they will explain in more detail than i'm willing why you're making bad decisions on the road.

    >>
    >>29136959
Minsks are cool, I've been looking for a Minsk/Moskva M1 for quite some time now.
And dneprs are quite different from Urals, they're actually more related to airhead BMWs than Urals are.
KMZ took their OHV development to a different, more complex direction whereas IMZ kept it simple.

There's endless argument over which one is better.
I'd say technically, on paper the KMZ OHV engines are superior, but in practice the build quality just wasn't there to make it work.

KMZ engines ditched slinger plates and roller bearings for an oil pump and plain bearings on the conrods.
The crankshaft is hollow and one piece, whereas in the IMZ it's 5 pieces and pressed together, the conrods instead being stuck inside the crankshaft assembly and riding on needle bearings.
The KMZ engines also had a weird oil filtration centrifuge at the end of the crankshaft for some reason, IMZ just stuck an oil filter in the block and the feeble oil pump passes the oil through the cartridge to filter out shit.

    >>29136992
This can be somewhat true but there's the completely opposite problem too when people see their bike do well up to highway speed so they assume the performance is as linear as with their car while their shitbike actually dangerously underperforms when they initiate certain maneuvers.

In Australia, the KLX is taller than the DRZ and has more ground clearance and longer suspension travel than the model sold elsewhere. It meets the enduro requirements for road registration and has no ride modes, no traction control, and no ABS. It’s lighter, more flickable, tighter steering, and felt right when I sat on it. The riding stance is more aggressive with a slight lean forward. All in all, I recommend the Aussie KLX to anyone who can get one. I love it.

Wow, you need to operate the clutch a half a dozen times per ride
Let's call a spade a spade, it's a semi automatic transmission. You might as well have a DCT operated by foot lever. It's no better than paddle shifters.
    >but I CAN still operate the clutch
If you wanted to operate the clutch you wouldn't have a quick shifter, but you DONT want to operate the clutch, you want a semi automatic without admitting it to yourself.

I would also pass on the triumph jacket and go for a belfast one because thats more original english fashion and style- theyre more pricey than brqndname chynesium, but on the iff chance you sell and go into cruiser/cafe life; youll have a swanky set of leathers to embrace
From what i hear belfast makes nice stuff, i almost got one

Also i might get a $500 sale aerostich suit in BOLD RED COLORS to match my crf450rl, but since its snowing everywhere and i dont feel like investing in a set of studded sumos+fork seal+ suit+ new bucket to match+ i have surgery on my hand nov 15 and ill be unable to ride anyways---- all this seems overkill for a few days of feedback loops durinf the worst riding conditions imaginable

Nevertheless, i am curious on /dbt/ feedback regarding what sumo tires i should slap on and stud if that were to be a good option for some winter shooms
What are good winter tires even, i have no idea where to start for that asides from i want the lower clearance for balance with them instead of my dual sport wheelset

Well the revvit leather suits would honestly make symettrical sense for their logo and the triumphs linework/headlight
I would get those if i was on a triumph, and in blue obviously
I think the shoei rf1400 gundam blue matches your color somewhat, but you need to be in person to have a color match guarantee and preferably with natural lighting conditions

You dont really need to lose weight on a 2 piece jacket, just the lower leather pants for waistline and thunderthighs, i would advise against a 1 piece unless you know what youre doing or go the advdad experience where baggy is preferred

Or find a retro jacket and just call it a day with cheaping out, put money into the helmet, worry about pants when youre done counting atkins diet calories

P.s. if you find picrel helmets on any of your journeys please let shoomers know, he really wants proprietary catears that arent fake and gay bolt-ons/glue-ons amazon cope tier chynesium
    He wants the REAL DEAL

    >>can still use clutch to shift while moving
I've been thinking about it and depending on how directly the software actuates the clutches it could potentially be kosher but I'm a poorfaggot and I'll never drive this car.
    >>
    >>29137226
Don't listen to the other guy, I think you'd look very cool in leathers. You can split the difference with aerostitch transit leathers, or you can go blue power ranger, and you'll look like the cool mentor motorcyclist from twist of the wrist 2.

    >>29137253
quickshifters usually turn off when you actually pull the clutch. but they're still extremely gay. one of the most fun elements of riding a motorcycle hard is accurately inputting quick downshifts and clutchless upshifts, and quick shifters take that away from you.
    >>
    >>29137161
    The KLX300 and DRZ400E have:
    the same ground clearance, 315mm
    The same seat height, 935mm
Basically the same wet weight, 137kg vs 138kg
The DRZ has more suspension travel, 290mm front & 295mm rear vs 285mm front & 289mm rear
The DRZ has substantially more power, 29kW vs 19kW

I would have chosen the DRZ. It's an all-round better bike with a much bigger after market.
    >>
    >>29137270
    >and quick shifters take that away from you.

Thr post you first replied to, >>29137139, only mentions a quickshifter with up and downshifting capabilities. The rider would still have to work the shift lever, it would just cut spark on upshifts and open the throttle on downshifts (assuming a RBW throttle body).

    >>
    >>29137410
As a wr250r owner, you really have to know how to use the clutch to manage power, either of the other 300 Japanese dualsports have a lot more down-low grunt. One argument to be made for them over a drz400 is range, they can eke out a bit longer distance from the same size tank.

120 kph is only 75 mph.. Here's an XT250 test where he gets to 80, or 130 kph, comfortably, with more to spare.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFJmDzWB4F0
    he has 5 gears.
    Here's a KLX250 going 93, that's 150 KPH
    https://youtu.be/GYB8wdMBnMM&t=488
    He has six gears.

These are dual sports with supermoto tires. A proper ninja250 with street tires would do over 100MPH, that's 160 kph.

Just tell us you've never been on a 250 without saying it, why don't you.

NTA but those dual sports will get left in the dust by my ancient 100 HP car which will top out near 200kph. Once something has nothing else to give while merely keeping up with the traffic it becomes a potential obstacle because you are incapable of overtaking.

Still I'd like to try one of those dualies for forest trails, big thumpers are not light enough for me.
