People saying they don't work in the US are idiots. Unless you live in a rural area I understand but even then 300+cc maxis exist. They are perfect for large cities. What it doesn't fit with is America's "keeping up with the Jonses" culture so they associate scooters with being poor (They're already poor but they don't want you to know that). So much so that they would rather sit in traffic for most of their day just to preserve their image.

Because America is built as low density sprawl with poor zoning so your trip to grocery store happens on a 60-70mph urban highway where these can't go.
It's not just how big it is, but the fact we paved over random cow pastures to build housing on and explicitly banned any type of store from opening in that area.

People aren't going to get a vehicle that can't do highway speed in an area in which they need to be able to do highway speed.

So despite the bottom dollar price of these it's simply not an option for a lot of people. Never mind you're also fighting the american social stigma of motorcycles being so extremely dangerous that only a reckless retard would ride one.

Also Europe has a lot of walkable cities that were built many hundreds of years ago, whereas a substantial amount of American infrastructure and residential areas were built after the proliferation of the automobile.

Also riding in the rain and the cold fucking sucks and you can't carry like anything.

So for those legitimate reasons, they're unfortunately not even considered for the people in which they would actually make sense. Which is a shame, because a scooter is just about the single most fuel efficient way to move a person, and the physically smaller size goes towards alleviating traffic and parking.

Me, I'm not a loser so I ride bikes.

You should probably compare cities directly instead of European cities to rural American areas. Is there a single major city in the US that wasn’t built hundreds of years ago? New York and Boston were there before the US was, to name just two of many examples. Most major IS population centers were built in the 19th and early 20th century before the advent of the car. Keep in mind, it wasn’t until after WWII that most Americans had a car.

im with fortnine on this. they are transparently mopeds/light motorcycles at this point. theres a lot of karen fear mongering about it but a ridiculous 2kw ebike with pedals is basically the same as owning a legit moped like picrel except it's easier to maintain

ofc though in america most places are starting to ban them because THINK OF THE CHILLUNS (real reason is because insurance companies and road pirates can't take their cut when you import an electric dirt bike off of amazon right to your front door)

You don't have to take the highway, though. At least for my commute to work a scooter only adds about an extra 20 minutes but you're having so much fun on your scooter you don't even realize it. Alternatively, you can use the scooter for anything other than work/groceries. I even got free parking every time I went to the hospital for follow visits. Shit was SO cash.
    >>
    >>29127110
If you are looking to have fun why not just get a motorcycle? They are only slightly more expensive.
    >>

    >>
    >>29125721
    >why aren't these more common in America?
Many would-be users won't buy due to safety reasons.

Because a car is still needed to carry a large volume of things. And many women drivers will not ride on one due to fear of Fatigue crimes. China and generally the rest of Asia doesn't have Fatigue crimes (because they'd slay such criminals).

Scooters are also dangerous to ride in the USA due to distracted drivers along with the careless drivers who barely passed the very easy driver license exam.

Too much rain for that. And then the snow and slush are also problems because OTHER cars will fling the slush onto you because you are low to the ground where all that stuff gets flung. People in a car have a car window opening pretty high off the ground so the flung water, slush, and grit never get to them But on a scooter you are subject to that.

Picture: some scooters are so physically large and heavy that they rival motorcycles.
    >>

scooters are more casual sorta fun and also a lot of them have little trunks and cupholders and better pannier mounting options and stuff so they're more suitable for a commute where you have a small amount of awkwardly shaped Office Objects or have places to be before/after. you can't hoon on one unless you're one of those madmen who gets a 2smoke version and got a literal degree in rocket science to squeeze an extra 0.7hp out of it

    >>29127058
the only one of these that matters is
    >grocery stores are distant, meaning you often pick up a whole week of groceries at once
for Me, Personally, a scooter can work because i live less than 1km from my local big grocery store. if not i would probably want something bigger (or to just have it delivered)

    but otherwise
    >people's commutes in America involve highway speeds

    >why aren't these more common in America?
People are too afraid of getting run over when riding these. There are a LOT of uninsured aliens and bad drivers out there.

Those tiny scooter wheels do not potholes and wavy pavement. If you're turning or braking and the tiny front wheel hits one of these, you can be jolted to the side at risk of wiping out in traffic and having a car roll over you.

    >>29127385
    >in most of the US a 150 cc scooter is legally a motorcycle
Even a 50cc scooter qualifies in my state. So there's no point in getting a 50cc scooter here because 150cc is the sweet spot in getting a scooter whose engine isn't stressed out.

everyone's saying "because America is bigger" is retard. There are two hundred million plus Americans living in dense urban areas where these would be extremely practical. They're not popular because we're RICH and almost everyone can afford a car and almost everyone prefers a car.

US cities that developed after the car and/or in the west are a lot more sprawled out than anything in euroland. Phoenix is a good example of this, its population was like 100k in 1950. now it's ~4m.
it's easier and cheaper to just keep building outward than it is to build up. (Pretty much anything west of the Mississippi or south of Mason Dixon was pretty small until the car and air conditioning -- with a few notable exceptions like SF)

The top speed of a 50cc will impede traffic on regular roads, and takes a good 15 20 seconds to get there.
When you up the cc to 150-250, you are competing against the used car market where you have a trunk and 4 seats. Not to mention the faggotry image of being seen on one of these.
They simply just doesn't work in America.
400cc Sport bike is entry level to get on the freeway. 650cc is where things start to make sense. But, at 650, you are making a lifestyle choice and money that could get you a reasonable used sports car.

    >In Florida you can get from Miami to Tampa all by city streets
The huge number of winding streets and the chance of crossing slum areas at slower speeds adds a lot of distance and risk. One favourite place that Fatigue strikes bike riders is at local traffic lights. I know because a pair of Dindoo came at me while I was waiting for the light to change. This is correct, outside of very harsh winters.

I had a scooter just for recreation. It was an Aprillia Scarabeo 200. Just big enough to ride two people.

They work well even in a small city. They sip gas, cost next to nothing to insure, and are easy to maintain. Parking is insanely easy too. And it’s a scooter; it’s just fun to drive.

But people will absolutely assume it’s your only means of transportation and that you’re a poorfag. Presumably this is because we all intrinsically understand that it’s befitting the poor due to strict pragmatism.

    >but muh big country!
Half of Americans live in cities. 165 million people but still very few scooters.

No good in the winter though. You can bundle up for cold weather but can’t do shit about snow and ice. And the utility of a car can’t be over looked. You can’t pack a weeks worth of groceries into a backpack.
    >>
    >>29133998
you can pack a weeks worth of groceries in a big top box when adding underseat storage of large scooter, and in the cities, where you note all those people live, they cover the roads in salt, so snow and ice aren't really a concern in the effective usage envelope.
It is purely a social phenomenon. It's the same reason old houses lose value in Japan, or that used vehicles don't hold their value in some parts of Europe. Most of the market is taste.

I suppose I agree, I have my own little 200cc motorcycle and often prefer it over my bigger bike, especially off road.

I just have a big rack and milk crate or luggage boxes on my motorcycles, they can hold a lot. I admit cupholders and under seat storage would be pretty nice

    >stop being a pussy
Our roads are very icy October-May and our trails are deep snow with rough/icy river crossings, if I rode a scooter maybe I wouldn't be a pussy but I would also be dead. I'm not saying I don't like scooters but most Americans would rather spend their limited riding time with something they perceive as more sporty and exciting

Not sure how I implied that in any way and also not sure how my job is related to this. I ride off trails all the time and even put in my own trail to my place. We are talking about scooters, which are some of the worst vehicles to take off trail, and the average American, who almost certainly is not gallivanting off trail on a regular basis, least of all on a scooter.

No way. I have self-inserted as the MC of every American action movie, I know intuitively that when I whip out a gun I am the good guy with a gun and God himself will ensure that I will murder all of the men within the 15-foot radius I can reliably shoot within with no punishment.

checked and I thought you were taking the opposite stance. Most Americans are confined to roads but they won't be riding a scooter on frozen roads, in monsoons, during floods, or in 120F with traffic and most of America gets something like that every year. It is hard for Americans to justify buying a scooter for the combination of factors I listed, the weather only being one detractor.

i live in canada with a similarly swingy climate and while i can sympathize that people would prefer not to be on two wheels with just their clothing for it, to say that you CAN'T do it because of that is sheerly being a pussy

    t. literal faggot and very sensitive emotionally but as the finns say, there's no bad weather, there's only bad gear. or even as Big Daddy K put it
    >Man is powerless against some of the things that threaten him; disease for example. But he can accept the risk of disease stoically. It is part of the nature of things, it is no one’s fault, unless it is the fault of some imaginary, impersonal demon.

    >But threats to the modern individual tend to be man-made. They are not the results of chance but are imposed on him by other persons whose decisions he, as an individual, is unable to influence. Consequently he feels frustrated, humiliated and angry.
WE will play TOGETHER in a way that is FUN or WE will LOSE
    >>
    >>29137228
anon no one is saying you can't dress for the weather. i also live in the subarctic and enjoy the outdoors in all weather. what i am saying is two wheeled vehicles are terrible on ice, terrible in floods, and there is no gear you can wear that makes sitting in traffic in pheonix on a hot day comfortable. the answers to these conditions are cars. Have you ever ridden a two wheeled vehicle on ice? It is very difficult, very dangerous, and as you would call it "bad gear"
This isn't even accounting for all the traffic sliding around the road that i'm sure you have encountered. Have you ever even seen a two wheeled vehicle on an ice covered public street? Motorcycles and scooters are afraid of wet grass clippings. They even avoid road paint when it rains. Are you telling me it is safe to ride on straight ice?
    >>
Cars are cheaper to own in America and motorcycles are less regulated.

So poor people opt for a shit box and 2-wheel enthusiasts can just go buy a used Hayabusa if they want. The main use-case of scooters is DUI mobiles.

    >commute year round
So you know that conditions have to be perfect to stay upright? This isn't even counting the many fender benders you can't avoid which would be minor in a car but would cause major injury on a bike.

    >skill issue
I ride in winter when conditions allow, which isn't often. It isn't a skill issue.
Tires need enough lateral friction to stabilize the vehicle and many people live in areas where that simply isn't available year round. This isn't skill, this is the thing that allows two wheeled vehicles to work at all. Do you also think helicopters not being able to fly very high is a skill issue or is it the obvious result of not enough air density? Consider glare ice, slush/water on ice, hoarfrost, etc. While I am sure you are a tough guy and definitely not a pussy, I do know you are not arguing honestly so I'm done with this.

Because it's illegal in most states to ride anything under 250cc on the highway. Highways also run directly through most cities in multiple spots.
On top of that for the price you're gonna pay for one capable of 70 mph and at least 250cc new you can buy something infinitely less gay like a Honda Sabre 1100. Hell there's a 78 KZ1000 for 3500 bucks on marketplace right now and a new 400cc Burgman is like 9 grand.
    >>
    >>29137355
    >many people live in areas where that isn't available
no many people do not live in areas where that isn't available
here in the first world we use road salt to keep the roads free of ice
maybe you live in yakutsk or edmonton or something, but very few people live in such places
the whole of the lower 48 and most of alaska (by population) keeps ice off the road with salt
most of Canada keeps ice off the road with salt
All of japan keeps ice off the road with salt
England rarely has snow and ice in the first place
I don't care about any other country
There may be some days a year of freezing rain without road salt to keep the roads thawed, but those conditions are also genuinely hazardous to drive in, and if you drive in them you're dumb as nails. Any condition safe to drive in is safe to ride in except for simply far too cold for even the warmest gear - below 0F in my experience - and far too hot - above 100F with the humidity of my state, but I've ridden at hotter temperatures in dryer places.

    >Because it's illegal in most states to ride anything under 250cc on the highway
    This isn't true
I googled it for every state, it's not true in any state.
The closest I got was texas, which has some highways which are 250cc restricted, but its not a statewide blanket.
In California there's a 150cc limit (not statewide), and there's going to be a 150cc limit in Illinois starting next year (statewide)
    Michigan is at 125cc
Otherwise where limits exist its usually 50cc. Kansas' restriction is 5 horsepower
Many states have "motor driven cycle" prohibitions, which are in all cases not mentioned defined as mopeds.

So you had one of those tiny 50cc scooters whose engine was probably not able to put out what a normal 50cc should be capable of. In my youth, I rode a Honda 50cc 2-stroke scooter. So maybe you had a 4-stroke scooter which delivers a bit less power (forward speed) when on a steep incline.

Well that's funny because in every state except for DC there's less than a handful of scoot scoots under 300cc capable of maintaining rates of speed congruent with flow of traffic on a highway which quite literally means your ass is gonna be had if a cop decides fuck you for causing a backup.
Now you know why even 250cc motorcycles are colloquially known as "city bikes"
