I think this is a good place to stop for now. There's lots of grass and some water I can try to find new pokemon, though getting back to the breeder might be a bit of a pain (assuming I can)

Alright, I've done a couple of the post game boss fights (Lillian and Vorelli) and cleared (I think, maybe I missed something?) a few of the islands including fighting pic related
Its pretty underwhelming so far, hopefully the rest of it turns things around. I know I have Sabrina and Red to fight but I'm going to need to level up a bit more for that

this fight was super stacked against me
the leading camerupt had a seed that gave it +1 sp atk and applied flash fire onto it, plus magma armor giving it a +1 to both defensive stats, and spammed STAB lava plume which the field boosted by 50%
then a fucking heatran with a balloon that 1 shot everything, and 2 shots everything after a memento. it was impossible to kill before it killed me, so I chose to destiny bond it
and the rng hell that was his mega magmortar which had remorseless (doubles burning chance from secondary effects and works like merciless where it's a guaranteed crit when hitting burned targets) and spammed lava plume (now 60% chance to burn). had to memento it, then trick room and light screen just to get a chance to belly drum with chesnaught. unfortunately the base magmortar had magma armor so I couldn't one shot it with chesnaught even after the belly drum so I had to two shot it and pray I don't get burned in either of those turns
the rest was a sweep, but I don't feel like playing after all that bullshit

I'm playing Reborn but I don't want to pick one of the standard starters...but I also have no idea what to pick either. Can I get a recommendation?

Onward through this illusion forest.
Just like the one in rejuv I have to do a bit of guesswork and tree humping until one disappears and makes a path through. Kind of annoying with lots of random encounters.
I went through the wild grass here with a magnet lure and there wasn't a single new pokemon I can use, despite have what felt like 20 new pokemon to catch, unfortunate.
But I found an egg in an abandoned train that might give me something, that looks like its the train from the very start of the game based on the captain log too.

Found those, they were pretty much on the way through. I'm too stupid for the cave puzzle so I had to look it up.
Additionally there was a hidden lava spring but nothing much I can do in there yet.
The secret flower area had my favorite pokemon in it, but since its not poison I can't shoehorn it into this run.
All in all another Eevee, some field read outs and assorted items.

Finally get to the long awaited town and immediately get a great reward. The tentacool/mareanie dream is so back

Annoying af field after feeling it out and reading up. They all get evasion upon entry or using aurora veil, and having +evasion gives them a level of +crit (every field in this game seems obsessed with giving the opponent some way to crit cheese you I swear)
I'll give it a few tries "legit" but if its too annoying I will just say fuck it and use toxtricity's boomburst to break the mirrors. Clear smog is effective at dealing with it though as long as I land the initial hit and cuck their evasion boost they become significantly weaker. I think its kind of inevitable and by design which is why I don't really mind it in general. Lots of the moves that are affected by these fields just seem either implausible to have by the time you get there (not exactly expecting to find TMs for ice beam or flash cannon by gym 6), or are weaker moves you wouldn't really want outside of a specific field. (like signal beam when I have bug buzz already). The relearning in reborn/rejuv is at least pretty convenient though so that's nice.

And then what I like to call the "kick in the balls" boosted moves. Certain attacks boosted 1.5x:

Rejuv did it too though, and that game was adamantly against letting you have the legendaries that would carry these moves. By the end I got some pseudo legends like the roaming dogs and the lake trio but none of the actual legends, and it included their signatures moves on fields too. Gotta say though, this recurring theme of "just make the player fight a pokemon 20+ levels higher" is getting a little old by this point
This thing has coverage for everything I have. Psyshock is a OHKO and the ones that are part-dark get OHKO by flash cannon. Sometimes it goes for a charge beam which has a chance to miss, and a crunch will 2HKO but counting on it missing twice seems unlikely.
I'll have to look at my PC and see if I have something to use against thhis

Charlotte and Laura go outside for some air after Anna presses them about their house fire that made them orphans, and the rest of us decide to go outside for a gym battle (for real this time)
I don't know what type he's supposed to be (I guess normal kind of?), since his team is very well balanced. But his strategy seems to revolve around using draco meteor, overheat, etc on cyclizar and then swapping to something else to purge the stat drops.
Also learned that clear smog reverts stat drops as well as stat gains so uh... I won't be using that to conserve gunk shot PP again in such situations after this

back to it in Ghost Greys postgame
there are a couple boss fights I'm saving for later so I'll continue exploring the islands. The first two weren't great (and its honestly a bit hard to tell if you've done everything or missed something) but we'll continue on with Treasure Island.

one annoying thing about the islands so far is that the trainers have pokemon in the 40s, but the bosses and big fights in in their mid 70s or higher. So coming here early is pointless because you'll just be stonewalled, but fighting the trainers once you've beat the main game is just time wasting with no purpose

Done with the Abyss, picked up another legendary and an egg, left a random glitch pokemon behind, man I would have been pissed if I had that part sprung on me blind

I'm lucky I got the waterium Z before fighting her so I could get rid of the field
a 30% boost to both defenses for all dragon types, a 50% boost to both fire and dragon type attacks, dragonize becoming a 50% boost, and multiscale negating ALL dragon type weaknesses was too much to handle all at the same time
couldn't set up a grassy field since lava plume kept turning it into burning field, so I used a water z move to turn dragon's den into a regular cave

funnily enough, after getting rid of the field I could beat her using only 3 'mons, cradily for stealth rocks and z move, alolan exeggcutor for light screen, trick room, and wish
something I did find weird and might be a bug is that raging bolt outsped no matter what. it outsped me outside of trick room and in trick room when it had 200+ speed

it's such a clusterfuck that i'd personally just start over from reborn's, minus some fields (glitch and underwater force you to rebuild your entire team to fight on them properly, new world disabling or neutering weather/terrain changing/earthquake/etc is super cringe, mirror arena not making it into rejuv of all games is everything you need to know about how bad it is, fairy tale field is a slop "buff what's already really strong" field, big top is rocket tag hell, starlight is barely used in reborn but there it's just a generic "these approved types get hyper buffed" field, and chess also forces you to rebuild your entire team and study the field effects just to fight on it)
