Does anyone else just not care much about mods anymore? They're all AI sloppa these days anyway

I dont actually play or care anymore.
I just check what new viewpoint addon is released and how the redditors and devs are coping with how fast and better ai modders can do better job than the devs for 15 years

Is cooking worth doing a run focused around? I love cooking and food but in zomboid whenever I interact with it it's just "slap all your shit into a pot"

Are there fun recipes worth pursuing? Is role playing a chef rewarding? Might give me a reason to finally fuck aroung with farming

    no lol
just use whatever cooking mod is being most updated at the moment

Get vanilla foods expanded and it becomes fun. You can make so much shit. Bake lots of things. Do more with farming, the veggies have more uses like molasses from sugar beets etc
And in turn it means you can level it better
    >>
    >>3073141
Insects and chum are a bit weird anyway. Once you add a live one to chum, its good forever, so keep stocks of chum in a crate and add fresh insects as you forage

    >I'm asking because I don't want to reinstall PZ yet again just to get bored after 1-2 days
You're going to get bored after 1-2 days with the first person mod. It doesn't shake things up that much.
    >>
    >>3073829
Man I really want to like PZ, but after finding a safe attic and hoarding some supplies I just get bored. At least with CDDA there's the labs to raid and projects like death mobiles or building a base for your NPC slaves to build stuff

Drinking straight from the water source is safe even if the game tells otherwise. Its only drinking tainted water from containers that is lethal.
    >>
    >>3074592
Drinking directly from tainted water sources can kill you if you drink from it twice or more rapidly.
    >>
    >>3074592
Drinking river water does make you sick brah. Plumbing barrels to sinks purified the water if getting it from the tap. I assume that didnt used to be the case because redditors still talk daily about heating their tap water
    >>

    >Drinking straight from the water source is safe even if the game tells otherwise.
    No.
    >>
    >>3074605
Plumbed sinks purifying water has been in the game for like a decade at this point.
It's absolutely a bug, but for some dumbass reason the devs have left it in, probably due to spaghetti code.
    >>
    >>3074605
    >>3074609
He's 90% right. Drinking from a water source gives WAY less sickness than water from a bottle for some dumbass reason.
Even with weak stomach, drinking your fill from a puddle or river/lake in a single gulp won't kill you.
    >>
    >>3074609
    >>3074605
    >>3074602
Ive played for hundreds of hours drinking safely from rivers and ponds and never got sick.
Unless it changed in some recent patch OR you have some mods you can endlessly drink from river with zero problems, only drinking from containers is lethal.
Retanaru video about it is years old but still holds true.
    >>
    >>3074622
Retanaru's video also shows drinking repeatedly from the river to be deadly. You have to let the (nonlethal) sickness go down first.
    >>
    >>3074625
No it doesnt, it shows how you literally have to be hyperthermic for days WITH traits and literally only then you can die from drinking river water.

    Lucky/Unlucky trait didn't do nothing.
In singleplayer it gave a comically shit buff by making chances of certain items higher, and it also increased repair success rates.
In multiplayer it was nonfunctional (Maybe repair rate was better? But I don't recall) because the devs knew it'd make an issue where some retard would open a looted cupboard and find an axe.

    many unfinished things like this
and pottery, thats an unfished skill. Pipe pieces have no use. There isnt anything past level 5. Agriculture is in a weird spot. Some anon mentioned maintenance; you dont need to do anything. It rains all the time through spring summer & autumn to water your crops for you, the overwatering mechanic is currently disabled. and ive yet to ever see slugs or pests, just rare mildew. Hops, hemp and tobacco are all broken due to long growth time + bad month overlap, but hops currently do nothing. I assume indoor planting with greenhouses was supposed to come back with the realistic growth times but didn't make it. but im rambling now. masonry next

Never go to anything but the ground floor of the game unless absolutely necessary. If a room is dark, do not enter it unless you are 100% sure it's safe.
    >>
    >>3082729
I learned this lesson in the raven creek mod map, where a certain school had a small, dark room at the very top. It even had those "do not cross" roadblocks in front of it. They were there for a reason, as there was a hole in the floor. My month surviving character fell 4 floors.
    >>
    >>3082740

I am in a pickle. I want to make the game way harder and more dangerous to stop me getting to the midgame (runescape base craft simulator). Part of the issue I have at that stage is giving my survivor reason to leave a fully sustainable base - i even have 2 raincatchers of 1.2l of fuel on top of fish and farming.

However if I make the world more dangerous that would give less reason to ever leave

I feel this is where NPC troubles should be happening - why wouldnt a raider wanna enslave my cutie Survivor and take her oversized fenced off complex fpr themselves.

Originally I was going to bring chickens back and hope to find sheep. How often would I need to come back to care for these? There is a chicken hutch, I can close it
I hear even 1 cow is too much milk and work for singleplayer. Worth giving them a shot or should I think of butchering?
My base is not that far away. I wouldn't mind the drive every 5~ days, but if the cows aren't worth, I have space for chickens at home
    >>
    >>3085473
chickens are not worth it, even without a hutch they die too easily
sheep produce little milk and some yarn, but yarn is almost useless
]the only cow that produces "too much milk" is the holstein cow, the simmental and angus cows barely produce enough for 1 butter every 2 days, meanwhile the holstein cow produces over 10L a day

Good news, iron ore does spawn when foraging anywhere!
Bad news, anywhere means also you can't go specifically to find it, itis rarer than fucking ammo, flat 1 chance on every area type and it's like worth an ingot/3 bars iirc, and why would you bother when you can get that from like killing 100 zeds or less, or even just foraging junk.
I've found a grand total of one (1) ore ever, and I'm a foraging junkie. It's just more shit to fuck the caveman bros, I miss you rock meta.
    >>
    >>3087833
I admit I haven't found a single ore, ever, in any B42 build.
    >>
    >>3087843
It's a shitshow, played quite a while since b42 honestly I thought it wasn't ever going to be added so I don't know which patch did it, but I remember seeing it on the wiki randomly thinking nah that's a lie and lo and behold, iron rock. Seriously just better forget about it, I've found ammo like 20 times at the very least before iron ore. Also they fucked the focus search and I'm still pissed.
    >>
    >>3087902
The game doesn't really tell you that focusing doesn't actually make stuff appear more often, it just applies a modifier to your search radius for specific things.
If you didn't find something while walking in the woods without a focus, you're likely not going to find it with a focus.
    >>
    >>3087918
Objectively fucking wrong holy shit, that's for profession and trait modifiers.
You can test it with debug, it actually has a chance to turn a thing into another thing of the focus you are using, the thing is in b41 rare stuff wouldn't ever be swapped, like say ammo or recipe mags, but in b42 it can and will swap anything so no focus might be the new way.
In fact I remember in b41 cheesing the fuck out of it since you could focus whatever and then go into and out of search mode until whatever was in front of you suddenly changed, it was nice for boxes of nails but it was patched as soon as unstable 42 dropped.
Don't come at me with that shit, I AM the foraking.

    >>3088309
If shit got looted, where is the cars/people fucking packed to the gills with loot? Canonically nobody left the area because of military blockade/snipers/etc

Retard, you have it reversed. Louisville checkpoint was set up to stop people from leaving Louisville. The radio broadcasts close to the time where the checkpoint goes out talks about the military shooting people crossing the lake "now", implying lots of people left the area who were either cleared to leave or just snuck out. When Louisville checkpoint gets overwhelmed, the dead spill out into the rest of knox county. By that point the rest of the world was starting to get infected because the virus already escaped Kentucky.

    Dream mods I want.

Vehicles can be built from individual components, repaired, modified and used as mobile bases. - My Summer Car Mod is already doing this and I'm seeing other mods take this approach.

Deeper survival simulation - Not much mods doing this yet

A world that exists without the player - Project A life is already doing this.

A more challenging late game- Enemy NPC's stay static. My thing is over time enemy bandit NPC's would get stronger maybe attack you with tanks, choppers etc, maybe add some late end game stuff to raid like Military Silos, Mega Corp headquarters etc etc

I started cutting down trees trying to make a path from the road leading to the rosewood complex to the rosewood prison but gave up part of the way and just abandoned my car to walk all the way there carrying my propane generator. It was so fuckin spooky ducking necroa zombies in the woods until I was able to find a working mrap to drive the rest of the way there.
Basically I fucked up and drove into the prison complex and wound up stuck at the detached building. Some friendly bandit entities spawned and I took them with me to try and clear out at least a path out but they all ate shit and died, leading to me hiding out in the detached building again before trying to cut my way out and then like I said giving up and hoofing it. There was a full trailer (600 weight) and humvee (400 weight) full of guns, ammo, tools and other supplies I left behind.
After I restock, recoup and recover at my base I'll probably go back for it. Maybe start cutting towards where I left off. Or maybe just bring a fuckton of ammo and a tank to the prison yard and go to town, idk yet.

The infection starts near Rosewood, where the army base is. Spreading upwards TOWARDS Louisville.

I cant believe no one made a mod akin to all the drying racks UI mods where you can just choose to put X of shit as a fuel and light it up.
    >>
    >>3091934
You click the fireplace, 'destroy for fuel' and select all X item?
You can shove the fireplace's cap of logs in a minute or two
    >>
    >>3092833
    >>3092833
Vanilla has a setting to uncap the amount of shit you can put in. And its fucking anoying to have to scroll through the list of everything flamable in your inventory to get to the logs/large branches.
There should be a drag and drop UI OR some mechanics to "favourite" certain stuff as fuel for campfire.
Ignition is even worse, scrolling through every combination of tinder/light is hell.
    >>
    >>3092841
How much flammable shit are you carrying around at all times?
    >>
    >>3092847
A lot. How many medical supplies can be used as fuel? A lot. Shitload of materials too. Hell even tools can be burned.
And its only worse when it comes to "light the fire" option where just having five books and three lighters/firestarters/matchbooks create a long fucking list that cant even be scrolled fast because its not a menu with a scroll bar.

bandages, tounge depresors, cotton balls, all rags, depening on mods you have other shit too.
Now add to that materials, tools, books etc and the list is unwieldy as fuck.
Its just a bad system, deal with it.
    >>
    >>3092025
Does that actually make the world look a bit more like the beginning of the apocalypse was pretty chaotic?
    >>
    >>3092857
Maybe put all the shit in containers, it's a minor inconvinience at worst, if you really want to be an asshole carrying 20 books everywhere you go then just favorite them so they become not usable for fuel.
    >>
    >>3092893
I carry every medical item in vanilla and I don't have any issues with the fireplace fuel system.
    >>
    >>3093099
Do people not put their bags and satchel down at home? I wear a fannypack with a spork n lighter at most. Anons problem would still exist for containers near the fireplace though. Maybe someone should whip up a vibecoded unique UI for woodburning? Make sure its obtuse like the drying rack one

He's entirely correct, realism should only be used so far in a game to enhance fun, not to diminish it.
Zombies being able to be pushed over is realistic and fun. Zombies splattering you with blood when hit, infecting you is realistic and not fun. Notice they didn't put that second part in?
There's a bunch of 'realistic' bullshit ingame that isn't fun, and it should be removed and tweaked.

    Zomboid insider here.

Here is the next big updates for build 43.

Expanding primitive metallurgy, detailed stone/clay crafting trees, custom shelter structures, and survival options for total wilderness playthroughs.

Optimizing low-level background processing for dynamic hordes,NPC faction, world events and multi-dimensional world loading, and subterranean level processing outside the player's immediate loading area.

Dynamic NPCs and Base Management. They had working static NPC for a while but wanted to make them dynamic.

Faction Relations update is also being worked on.

World Events. Broader integration of faction-led patrols, territorial control, and dynamic responses to local threat escalations.

    Medical & Infection reworked.

Mechanical & Item Fault Expansion: Fine-tuning item-specific wear and tear, fluid contamination, and engine/part breakdowns across vehicles

Problem is those giant walls are almost completely cosmetic. Wow the one zombie who wandered in who couldn't even break a boarded up window, gotta have 50 log walls just in case

They really need to work on the zombie aspect of their zombie game otherwise all these survival mechanics are pointless. The innawoods life is basically always a choice of boredom. If you wanted you could live in the middle of LV with little issue but being able to get everything from looting would be le boring

It's baffling, I've never seen a game that goes out of it's way this much to not interact with the fucking title of the game itself.
If Skyrim made dragons do 1 hit kills, and being near a dead dragon kills you, and there's about 50 dragons circling overhead at all times, players would probably not try fighting the dragons and might just stay in caves.

    >Carving
A lot more useful than masonry, needed to make a bunch of weapons and can be fun to mass produce baseball bats
    >Pottery
Similar to masonry, it's a roadblock skill that only exists to prevent the usage of other skills until you gain enough pottery to make certain items. In this case, pottery exists to prevent usage of blacksmithing.

Bro most outdoors heavy laborers consider "hot" to be around the 40+ range. Anything 35 and below is an easy day in full PPE. Over that you just make sure you have a steady source of cold water and the day's easy up to 50+.
I think heat should be much, much more slowly progressive in Zomboid. I honestly don't even think it should be a consideration most of the time: In high heat you should consume more water, low heat more calories. Only when you run out of either should it start being a problem.

Absolutely agreed. Temperature management is a huge pain point in the game. At the very least, a trait that grants characters more ability to ignore temperature would be a nice half solution. If you're not going to fix it, at least let me pay to ignore it.
    >>
    >>3111077
Adding temperature tolerances to professions could be neat, even if it'd make a lot of classes even more overpowered than they already are.

It's not about being immune, you just learn how to handle it. High temperatures, easy access to running water. Low temperatures, a good pair of gloves and long johns. All things that, yes, most '93 Kentuckian laborers would know.

Spears hit like a freight train with crits, so at low skill levels they can instakill surprisingly often.

    >>

I felt the same as you until I learned. Now guns are good
shotguns are the loud boys that bring multiple blocks of zeds to you. You only fire a shotgun if you plan on a big killspree. This is GOOD - you get every zombie in a big radius converging on one location. You could manipulate the entire town this way honestly, and not even kill, just lead them out the city. But I usually go ham after firing a shotty in the street and kill zeds until I have to retreat. So always have an escape plan when you fire. Zeds have shitty memory so you can just turn a couple blocks and be back at city base. During the fight I will switch between guns & melee. Ingame yesterday I did this and killed 350 zombies before exhaustion, I had to retreat, but now that horde is on the east side of town and the area I first fired the shotty is clear, ready to loot tomorrow. You see?
Speaking of, guns dont have a drawback for using them past Level 1 Drowsiness
Pistols are quiet. I use one with a flashlight when clearing buildings after power goes out. Being close means every hit will increase the Aiming skill, which shotguns are good at too btw
Typically I will wait until I have stockpiled ammo and go on a street killing spree to thin cities & level Aiming. I always take a pistol with me. Revolvers are cool too.
    >>3118543
Guns are really abundant on default Apocalypse, this changed with b42 stable. Ammo seems rarer but IMO its distribution thats fucked. I have picked up 800 rounds of 12 gauge but barely any rifle ammo, the police station alone had dupes of every gun, but not enough ammo
    >>
    >>3117867
Spears (and all stabbing weapons for that matter) work because all the energy of your thrust get concentrated into a single point.
With a fork, you have 3 points contending for that force, the instant you hit, you'll start getting a lot more resistance from all points and the stab will be a lot less effective.
If the amount of points didn't count, we'd be fighting with combs.

Watering. You do this once. It rains way too much and plants go days without water. You cant overwater.
Diseases/pests: never seen them apart from mildew. You make that with a bottle of milk

the beef with crops isn't that they're bad, it's that they give next to no calories so trying to live on them you inevitably wind up starving and losing weight.
you can supplement with fish, except then farming is pointless, because nutrition is a gimmick, not real, and you don't need crops to survive. you just need the calories to avoid starving to death. crops are actually useful for losing weight while avoiding the hunger moodle, but so are eggs, which are even easier to acquire one you have a couple birds.
like everything it's totally unpolished, haphazardly implemented, and no one gives a damn because this is a decorating and zombie-slaying game, not Stardew Valley. i pity the fools who play it like it's a farming sim.

Keen (Space Engineers) knew they had to start over. i will have to buy the game again eventually, they're still supporting SE1. i'd prefer they make a better game with stronger technical foundations, rather than keep stacking plates and hope it doesn't tip over.

You know what, I might try blacksmithing next run. I hope this fuckass patch hits stable soon so the modders can fix shit and I can do a proper run.
Can't wait to pull my hair from all the sword sharpening. I tried going welder and doing scrap metal swords and my guy was like an attack on titan character that had to cycle through 3 weapons (back, two belts) just because the swords ran out of sharpness while I was fighting a horde. B42 unstable too so you just know the baseball bat was already offering more longevity for significantly less initial investment.
    >>
    >>3125614
Adding to what that anon said. If you want to tank a stat, you tank strength. Puny is ridiculously easy to deal with. Literally steal a dumbbell and some booze on top of your other shit while you're speedwalking out of town and you can grind 7 strength in just a few days.
    >>
    >>3125619
The ultimate issue with swords is that at high skill levels/STR you end up 1 hit killing zombies with a baseball bat anyways.
So swords end up functioning as worse bats because they're harder to make and need sharpening.
    >>
    >>3125622
Fuck the sharpening mechanic dude. They already diluted knife pulls with this pairing knife shit, but now they also made them way worse because you constantly have to stop and maintain them.

I uhhhhh got all set up in Louisville on the western coast in the bottom left house. Realized I never got a fishing rod from anywhere and there's no store here either. I tried to check out a strip mall with a "sports" store and it was packed with like 400 zombies. I was still tryign to figure out where to base and just kind of said fuck it. It's getting cold so I said fuck it I'm going to just build in Fallas Lake and use the advanced forge there to make my life easier. I want to go back to Louisville later but idk I like to slowly take over areas and it will just take too long right now. I like how you can actually see the migration but I've got no high aiming + M4 to mow down hordes and I'm not prepared for my first winter at all. Figure I'll collect books and things now and return in the future.
    >>
    >>3126587
The worst thing about the fishing rods is you REALLY want to find one in a car or tackle shop. Because there's a bunch of hidden behind the scenes shit that affects the fishing minigame.
In a nutshell, your line choice doesn't matter (twine is less durable but does nothing else), but your hook type matters a lot for getting bites, and the rod choice (normal fishing rods are best) affects how much durability your line will be losing.

Yeah, but the shooter can also one-tap the person they're shooting at. I think its another case of Zomboid being "realistic" unless its something that can fuck the player over.
But the health mechanics/First Aid are really lacking in the game in general so I think the entire thing could use an overhaul. I doubt the devs really put much thought into damage from anything but zombies as well.

realistically the game ends when you fortify a base and have one the many bountiful food options in place. if you start grinding crafts without hearing a zombie you won
