Entire ships can be lost in literally seconds if enough deamons noticed it and came flocking. There are a lot of horror stories about what the crews experience during gellar field failures, and it's said among the navy that you're not truly a veteran until you've survived your first gellar field failure.Captains generally don't repel boarders themselves, but in videogames player characters do everything. It's the same reason you gather random bits of scrap from trash cans, and why the knight commander manages inventories, and why the kingmaker baron does side quests, etc. The player doing everything even if it would/should actually be delegated is a videgoame trope.

Since Bioware died I decided to replay KoTOR 1 and I loved every minute of it. Bioware really knew how to make fun companions and even with the limitations of the time a lot of the skyboxes and maps look beautiful. Maybe I'm blinded by nostalgia but the story, plot twist and quests still hold up. The party interactions and banter feel more genuine and well written than a lot of modern CRPGs and its sad nobody has properly refined that original Bioware formula.

We were sent into the underground with a smelly gangrel girl, Nix, both to investigate some disappearances and to dispose of Nix. Nix got herself torn in two, and we found a cellphone on her, and the underground turned out to be flooded with some sort of abominations and a large force of well organized, equipped hunters. The game doesn't really show us how we got back up, we just fade to black and are talking to Tolly again, but I guess you have to cut corners somewhere. Tolly is less than useful, unable to direct us to a way to get back underground and through the door the hunters sealed off, and doesn't really seem all that concerned about the large horde of monsters running around beneath us. One more choice and consequence failing of the game is that we aren't given the option to just kill Tolly at this point. He's a very suspicious character, has put us in a bind more than a few times, and doesn't really seem to be doing his job very well. It's also very suspicious that these monsters apparently flooded out the other Nosferatu in the city, yet Tolly himself was unaffected and apparently didn't even know about it. Not a single member of the information sharing clan bothered to share that info with the guy who's job it is is keeping the Court informed of things like this?

Lou is a little more helpful, she used to enjoy sticking her enemies down there and must have had a way to get there beyond a relatively fresh hole in the ground of a tourist trap on the other side of town. We get our first peek at whoever is heading up the hunter cell is Seattle, a 'mother hen' code name, and the briefing/speech is pretty interesting to listen to. She knows a lot about us, but not everything, and she gets a few details wrong. It's always nice when characters in a story like this are written this way, and not as though each NPC has access to the setting's fandom wiki.

The asian ruins contain a library with all sorts of texts that seem like they shouldn't be written down, including a lot about me. This is one of many things that changes based on your clan, and how you described your backstory to Fabien and Safia earlier in the game. The Order of Hermes is a reference to Mage, and is a group an older Tremere would likely run into from time to time.

A fingerless hand, some sunflowers, a wooden mark like the one on our hand. There's a small puzzle to find the fingers, but it's really just an excuse to lead the player around the different rooms and hope that you pause to read the different writings. Observations about our character, diablerie, strange creatures in the East, lupines, and whatever else. The game really should have given us the option to burn this place, or attempt to move some of the items, this is exactly the sort of thing you wouldn't want hunters to find and they're literally at the door. But we're on rails for this part, and very focused on our personal problems.

Once solved, we're pulled back into the garden, the first time we've been here while wide awake, and the first time we see ourselves in Phyre's body rather than Fabien's. The first time I played, I was certain this garden was Eden, and maybe it's still meant to be, but it never really comes up again. Mysterious idyllic garden, a single tree, vampire connection, progressively more skulls around the base of the tree each time we visit, seemed obvious to be some kind of Caine thing.

Another missed roleplaying opportunity - Lou is pretty disrespectful to Safia and my clan here, and while we do get the option to threaten her directly, we don't get to actually attack her. Like I said, every CRPG is on rails at various points, but the less I have to rationalize inaction to maintain RP the better. In this case, even though Lou's help has probably exhausted itself and never brought us any closer to a solution, she is still the Prince's sire and I can't technically just kill other kindred in front of a Prince without the say so.

Gideon makes an interesting observation - we were told early on that the killings matched a pattern for a known entity, but has anyone really seen him? Is there any record he really exists? Who gave us this idea originally?
Between Lou's comments and this remembered conversation, Fabien suddenly solves the case - 'The Gardener' was his sire Gideon the whole time. Gideon could peer into minds, he left the table to speak with Lou, and that was the last Fabien or Safia ever saw him until last night, finding him in a hole Lou favored for dumping enemies, pierced with rebar and left to starve. It's all coming together.

As we go from post to post, it's clear that they have the majority of the city's kindred mapped out. They're clued into Mrs Thorn at our makeshift chantry, they're watching the Prince at Weaver Tower, they know about Lou at the Glacier, various anarch cells. If we weren't still bound to the city, in-character this is the part where we might tip off Safia and Thorn and try to get out of dodge. There's no coming back from this level of knowledge, even as we kill their operatives in the city we know they're going to keep coming and now they know exactly who to look for. Ryong can't just change her name and put a ghoul in as CEO.
The head of the local cell - the 'mother hen' - greets us with her hideous visage on a laptop as we take out the last of the observation posts, and invites us to her location, revealing she knows a little about us already. Walking into it after being invited is probably not the smartest plan, but orders are orders, and her hunters are having a lot less success now that we're doing the ambushing. To the writer's credit, Fabien does point out that we probably shouldn't walk in, but we're going anyways.

The IAD's command post is an old dockyard, and goes about as well as you'd expect with various snipers and traps waiting for us, but we whittle through it bit by bit. Part of the intelligence we recover helps paint the overall picture of how Nix led them to our doorsteps. Nix was embraced, death faked, but continued to communicate with her family not long after, her husband was the man who called into the Deb of Night towards the beginning of the game convinced her corpse was haunting them. A priest with connections back to the Society of Leopold/SI managed to get them on her trail, which was easier to follow thanks to her prohibited cellphone use. When she came to Seattle and made the rounds, she painted a map for them, visiting Weaver Tower to announce herself and eventually assigned to help feed Lou. It's why we were meant to kill her in the underground, but even if we hadn't been beaten to the punch it would have been too late. But she just wanted to see her husband and kids again.

Some of the hunter ambushes are legitimately tough, which is a rare case in CRPGs of the story and gameplay working in service to each other as it really helps sell the idea that these hunters are a serious problem, much more than some anarchs. But eventually we make our way to the leader, who we now know as Latoya Baker. Seriously, Latoya. They didn't have names like that back in Constantinople. We immediately pick up that she's sick, and she wants to cut a deal - we embrace her, save her from death, and she'll share everything she knows about the SI. She can even maintain her position and redirect them. From an RP perspective, I have absolutely zero interest in such a deal - I'm not going to embrace someone without permission and certainly not without at least talking about it with the other members of my clan. The game doesn't give you the option to talk her down to being ghouled (which I believe would fix her problem anyways), but even if it did I wouldn't offer that either. I've been ordered to kill her, I can't bring her back to court alive and well. And for all I know this is their version of going under cover and studying us further. Still, I might as well hear what she has to offer.

Back at court, I'm all too happy to tattle on Katsumi - we've had bigger fish to fry for a few nights now, but she tried to intimidate me into giving up Benny our second (third?) night in town, and her posse has taken shots at me a dozen times and is half the reason this city is so lousy with hunters now to begin with.This is one of those flavor choices, even if you don't give her up you're sent to find her by Lou who just wants her out of the way for reasons of taste, so you end up on the same track regardless. But these sorts of "fake" choices still help define how your character feels moving through the plot, and are useful for RP. Every CRPG has them, you just have to take them the right way.

You can play something of a neutral jedi if you want and forego benefits or penalties. Right on the money Safia - Gideon's glasses, some sunflowers. Fabien has a bit of an internal debate on what to do with the information - she's not Prince anymore, but she's still powerful. But it all clicks, the original victims were ghouls of her co-prince and rival, before getting Rosalind herself. Gideon could peer into people's minds, heard something from Lou he shouldn't have, confronted her, and that was his demise. Out of character, this seems like the sort of thing Fabien should have clued in on a few decades ago - two women in charge, one loses her ghouls then dies too and now the other woman is in charge herself, gee who could it be?Nevertheless, Fabien decides to take it into Campbell who had him looking into the modern killings already. Lou might be his sire, but he's the Prince now, and what Ventrue doesn't enjoy a little bit of backstabbing?
Unfortunately, the Prince is less than interested to hear all this, and in fact sounds like he's heard it from Fabien before. He uses Dominate on us to help us forget the whole thing.
We go further back to the 20s, to a similar conversation with then-Prince Lou and her ghoul, Campbell. It's written to echo the Campbell conversation near perfectly, and we realize we've been solving this case over and over for a hundred years.

Most nights I make an RP point to check in with Mrs Thorn at our pseudo chantry first thing, but in this case we might as well head straight for Lou. Nobody but us actually knows that Fabien is in our head, so knowing all this comes as a bit of a shock to her. She can't dominate us or hope to kill us either and you can immediately hear the shift in demeanor.

She'd like our help finding a meal as we now know the city better than she does since she was cooped up here for so many years. She gives a surprisingly exact description of Verona, one of Ysabella's blood dolls that survived the incident at Atrium, which seems intentional. We could refuse her here, and Fabien would prefer we did, but RP wise we're kind of back to square one. We thought this 'Gardener' character was the root cause behind this binding mark and a lot of other troubles, but now he's gone and the mark remains. If I'm going to be stuck here and Lou is going to be Prince, I might as well engage her in some tit for tat should I need something later. I'm the one that has to live in this city, Fabien's just along for the ride, so we'll help Lou.

I wouldn't embrace her, she wouldn't fit the clan, but I'd probably take her as a ghoul if the game let me. But she's been given every out from this life and won't take it, so if she wants The Kiss I guess she'll get it. Dressed like that in this weather, you just know the hotel staff will know exactly what she's up to when she heads up to the rooms, but I guess Lou and Onda have that handled. You just can't help some people.
Back with Lou, we immediately see that the whole thing was just pettiness, her way of sticking it to Ysabella one last time. She'll probably buy up Atrium and turn it into a warehouse or something. We slip in the suggestion that should Lou want a backup for Ryong that Verona does come from old money down south, but I can already tell Lou will get tired of her in a week and we'll be told to take her to the underground too.

Snipers feel really caged in the ways you could level them and Argenta with that necklace was a sniper anyways so I don't know what they added. Then there's officers which are very powerful but being a buffbot isn't the most exciting thing in the world. The one thing I wanted to test more was arc rifles but I feel the rest of my party is going to be built pretty much the same way I built them last time, I get abelard early and who cares if I give him chainswords or axes or maces. You can wander around and read lore books just like the real games. I loved Summerset and Grahtwood. And even some of the places that do have their own game were just nice to see again, like Skyrim and central Cyrodil. Generally good voice acting, and it does have tons of story missions and side quests some of which are interesting or offer lore.The downside is that it's one of the easier mmo's on the market, and everything is pretty simplistic. Like most mmo's, there's "filler" stuff so not every side quest is truly interesting only a portion, and there were a few story beats a portion of people didn't like which is fair not 100% of it is good.You don't need a sbuscription to play and it goes on deep discounts often for the expansions which also come in collection bundles so it's a game you can test and see without much worry.>>586252342
