Not really. Most anons play proprietary games via Proton, which is most abundantly found in the current computer games market.
Sometimes we play Free (libre) games, but they are sparse.

I happened upon it from the libre games wiki in the OP pasta. I was browsing around in there and there really aren't that many games at all, but I assumed it could be just the wiki itself that's not very up to date.
I also tried Pioneer but that was too autistic for me.

Rejoice RDNA2 users, FSR 4.1.1 is available right now.
>>
As long you have the resource, by holding block, you autoparry with the shield.
>>
>>585126220
ok no memes, but what use case does FSR have? I've always just played at 1080p. Kinda feel like if you have to do upscaling your monitor is too high resolution.
>>
>>585126768
Uninstalled the demo because I was having a lot of fun playing it.
>>585126887
Because thanks to modern rendering, games look blurry as fuck, recent upscaler versions mitigate that, despite rendering at lower res and look sharper/cleaner.
>>
>>585126768

People are also having performance issues, but on my end it's silky smooth 120fps after the initial load on my 6800 XT.

>>
>>585126887
>what use case
960p upscaled to 1440p via FSR/DLSS looks better than 1080p native with TAA.
1080p upscaled to 4k via DLSS/FSR looks better than 1080p DLAA or FSR native, with minimal performance cost.
Me personally I'm still rocking a 1080p monitor because it works and I see no reason to upgrade, but I wouldn't mind getting a 1440p monitor and use upscalers

What does it mean to process a shader before I launch a game on steam? Aren't shaders applied in real-time as I'm running the game?
>>
>>585178196
The message said that they are waiting for the fix, so it looks like a fix wasn't even available?
>>
>>585183927
Shaders have to be compiled from generic shader code to gpu specific code. That compilation can cause stutters, but im not sure if that is the case anymore on a modern amd gpu as it compiles shaders very fast.
>>
This robussy game is a waste of potential. They decided to go for roguelite goyslop.
>>
>>585184512
So processing shaders (i.e., compiling shaders into GPU specific code) before launching a game is a solution to prevent stuttering in real-time?
>>
>>585184795
Yes. Steam can also download pre-compiled shaders from other users that have already compiled shaders if they have the same gpu as you, it does that automatically; which is faster than compiling the shaders on your computer.

A (maybe unanswerable) question: I have two separate nvme drives in which I install my games. I want a single directory to contain games from both drives without having to link all my games' folders inside the single directory. Is this possible? My intuition says no, because how would the filesystem know in which drive each game is, but maybe there is some magic that fixes it.

Try launching the game (or steam) from the terminal. It may include some information why it failed. Also use proton cachyos or proton ge instead of regular proton, it usually works better.

You can also install glxinfo and then run: "glxinfo | grep -i vendor" and see which gpu its using for games. If it's using LLVMpipe or something like that then your gpu setup is fucked.

I didn't know about the Wine sabotage and I already disliked the developer for trying to scrub old versions from the internet. He wrote that it was because he wanted people to submit bug reports for the latest version, instead of using old ones to avoid regressions, but last time I looked at his GitHub repo, it was archived *so that no bug reports could be submitted*. It seems not to be in an archived state at the moment, but the note about the project being archived is still on the README and I'm pretty sure it has been archived and unarchived multiple times. For a while, I think he was unarchiving it to upload releases and then archiving it again.
As for the intentional incompatibility with Linux, well, maybe he'll follow Tim Sweeney's example in a few years and do a 180 expecting to be praised for it.

setting the env variable KWIN_DRM_USE_COLOR_PIPELINE=1 fixed it

you can also fix it by choosing none as color profile but you can't do that if you're using HDR

The fourth episode of Freedoom 1 is a vanilla-compatible version of this WAD:

Found out with more searches and finding a github talking about a different stalker mod. Installed wintricks, installed those libraries, and...well one boots. Annoying. I never want any game (let alone some indie horror short) to run higher than the refresh rate, so I wish I could just apply a frame rate limit globally without even touching launch options. (Global MANGOHUD=1 isn't the answer, because that only works with Vulkan.)

It's not often that I see a game that is actually nothing but a walking simulator in the most literal sense. Dread X Collection's Rotgut is one. It's also a broken mess.
>walk to the woods
>walk into a long tunnel
>walk through the tunnel at a painfully slow pace
>takes an eternity to get to the end
>one spooky prop (some kind of dead animal) is placed half-way down the tunnel
>one spooky dude appears but doesn't do anything
>game ends randomly (?)
Instead of holding W for 20 minutes or whatever, I leaned my phone against the left stick on my controller (which worked for moving the player character despite no advertised controller support). I wasn't watching the whole time so I might have missed some "content" (like more of the random not-scary faces that I saw appear over the screen a couple of times).
>>
>>585497234
Same, or i just mindlessly scrool the fucking internet. It's all shit.

>>585497474
Here's the spooky dude. I wouldn't want anyone to play this game to find out what he looks like.
He moves even slower than the player. I let him get to me and nothing happened; the camera just clipped into him. Then he disappeared.
>>
>>585497779
I think this was after I got to the end of the tunnel and turned around. Then I went back to the end of the tunnel again to see if I missed something. There was nothing there so I started walking back out again.
I wasn't really paying attention because I was using my phone, now with the controller upside-down and propped against the keyboard to keep the left stick tilted forward, but at some point there was a loud breathing noise and the player character couldn't move anymore. Then the game abruptly ended.
Cool.
This "game" gave me a headache.
For the record, I don't remember how long it actually takes for the game to end. The previous two screenshots may have been from different attempts. I didn't actually get to the end the first time; I had quit and gone to the Steam forum to find out if I was missing something, but everyone else was confused too.

Freedoom sure does have a lot of these invisible enemies. (I know they're called spectres or something in commercial Doom. I don't know what they're called in this.)
>>
I forgot about lost souls. Here's the Freedoom replacement for those.
>>
Unfortunately, Mint's version of Freedoom (0.13.0-1) appears not to be fully compatible with Mint's version of Chocolate Doom (3.0.1+really3.0.0+git1548-1build2), or one of them is simply bugged. I tried saving at the start of E1M7 and got a "Savegame buffer overrun" error. I warped back to the level as a pistol start with "chocolate-doom -iwad freedoom1.wad -warp 1 7" and immediately saved, and the same thing happened. I thought Freedoom was supposed to be vanilla-compatible (or as close to vanilla-compatible as possible), but maybe I'm supposed to be using a different source port.
I also have dsda-doom installed, and maybe it was installed as a dependency of Freedoom in particular. I don't remember. The output of "apt-cache depends freedoom" says the dependencies are
>|Depends: dsda-doom
> Depends: <doom-engine>
> chocolate-doom
> crispy-doom
> doomsday
> dsda-doom
> woof-doom
and "dpkg -s freedoom" says
>Depends: dsda-doom | doom-engine
which is weird considering dsda-doom is listed under doom-engine, but I guess that means Freedoom prefers dsda-doom but will also accept other doom-engine alternatives...? Last time I did "sudo apt install freedoom" (not on this PC but my other one), I think it wanted to install dsda-doom and I stopped it and explicitly installed chocolate-doom instead (because I wanted it anyway), at which point the freedoom package was satisfied that it had all of its dependencies. I guess that was a mistake.
>>
At least it's not just me.
And probably not just my particular combination of versions either, unless that guy is on Linux Mint 22.x.
Maybe I'll just get through E1M7 without saving. I've already been saving only at the start of each map. But my last save is now at the start of E1M6 so I'll have to play through that again. I'll have to save right before the E1M6 exit if I want to make it to E1M8 without losing my mind.
>>
Oh, I'm stupid.
>That limit can be disabled in the chocolate-doom-setup program under the Compatibility options menu.
>Savegame buffer overruns are known issues and will not be fixed
So there's no problem at all. I just disabled the vanilla savegame limit, warped back into E1M7, and was able to save. I still want to keep my weapons though, so I didn't overwrite my E1M6 save. I'll start from there again later.

There are some options. On KDE Wayland you can force vsync (the disable tearing option). There's also MESA_VK_WSI_PRESENT_MODE=mailbox (also has some other options but mailbox has the lowest latency) which can force vsync, not sure if it will work with OpenGL but I haven't had any tearing with it on ever. A nuclear solution would be enabling Zink for everything (MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=zink), so your OpenGL games become Vulkan, but I don't know how compatible Zink is yet

Damn. Why is there even a minimum?
70 Hz is in the valid range, but it doesn't automatically adjust to 70 Hz just because it's a multiple of what the game is rendering. It only adjusts to 70 Hz if I increase dsda-doom's frame rate to 70 fps.
I'll never play Doom at a silky smooth 35 fps...
>>
70 Hz in dsda-doom does feel nice, but then I might as well increase the resolution back to native. And it's not as if I'm really going to notice if the frame rate is an exact multiple of the game's tic rate, so 75 Hz is as good as 70 Hz if I'm upping the frame rate this much.
And yes I'm posting all this as if Freedoom is actually Doom. Disregard the fact that Freedoom was not played on CRT monitors in 1993.

But it shouldn't be that hard to run anymore, unless Valve's Proton has regressed since the 11.0 beta in which the game was pretty close to just working, i.e. it would at least run without any tinkering. The problem was that it required Steam's shader caching to be enabled, because video playback relies on Valve's remote video transcoding, and most cutscenes weren't even transcoded yet when I last tested it (and probably never will be, if it's true that Valve doesn't transcode videos until some number of players hit the broken videos, because almost no one actually plays the game to completion).
If Valve still isn't providing transcoded videos for all cutscenes, then maybe getting the game fully functioning still requires some work.

bbhost v0.2.19 just dropped.

They've improved or might've even fixed certain physics and animations being tied to the framerate. Previously FPS above 90 would cause running to be slower than just walking. Now it runs flawlessly at 240. You can also pre-compile shaders now before launching the game.

I tried the original port at 120 fps and running was definitely bugged. If something partially blocked your way while running, your speed would go down because of the blockage but it would not recover after being unblocked. You had to stop running and start again to recover full running speed.

>TVs only display HDR the way games intend to if you change dynamic tone mapping to HGiG
Dumb that TVs are configured incorrectly by default just to make SDR content look brighter. But at least it looks amazing when you enable it. The side effect is that light flashes in the game look like real light so it hurts my eyes.
>>

Without the fix I posted, steam itself didn't start when launching from menu entry, but started from terminal. You should start from terminal and look at the log too.

Ah, that option works on wayland. Sadly on x11 when you enable it youtube actually says hdr but it plays without tonemapping to sdr. Which is dumb, because when you dont enable hdr in kde then firefox does tonemap the video to sdr, which means that firefox technically supports it on x11 as well but for some reason they just skip tonemapping on x11.

Sometimes you can get nested directories if/when you mix Proton and Wine but this doesn't happen too often really. Just double check your prefix structure. It should look like this

Honestly there is barely a difference https://litter.catbox.moe/adqfc6n70uai2td1.mp4 maybe im doing something wrong (although using the ff7remake version of renodx). I've considered symlinking various Steam games' Proton prefixes to a single directory. I almost never have to use Protontricks or select weird Proton versions, so most of my Windows games should be using a Proton 11.0 prefix with no modification. Not sure about tweaks that Valve does for specific games in the background, but it's probably unlikely that a game automatically gets some prefix-altering tweak that would break another game.
Not sure how Steam Proton handles 32-bit vs 64-bit Windows games. Maybe those would need separate prefixes if WoW64 isn't the default yet.
>>
>>585923248
Protontricks is just a depedency installer. You could install any dependency by hand if you wanted to. I mean regardless if it's wine or steam's cuck prefix.
Almost every game in existence needs a basic set of dependencies and these are
>allfonts dotnet40 dotnet48 dotnetdesktop6 dotnetdesktop8 dotnetdesktop9 vcrun2022 d3dcompiler_43 d3dcompiler_47 d3dx9 d3dx11_43 d3dx10 d3dx9_43 physx
People are over complicating these matters so much. It's just a fake windows directory with bunch of installed shit and with a fake registry.

What do you mean pc version? This is PC version, just Yamagi Q2 engine with partial support for Soldier of Fortune content.
If you're talking about native Linux version then it's broken, requires binary patching and OSS emulation to be playable. And even then it's still buggy under high framerates and tend to crash.

... Or maybe it had nothing to do with the kernel version.
I started from that oldest installed one, and tried all the others, taking these screenshots to keep a record and expecting one of the newer kernels to fuck it up again. But I'm back to the current kernel and it's normal. It couldn't be just the reboot, because I had actually powered off the computer completely for a few minutes and the problem persisted.
Did I anger the machine spirits, and were they subsequently appeased by all the pointless rebooting to try the kernels I forgot to clean up? I hate mysteries. I want to play video games without worrying if Linux Torvalds' vibe coding is making my Ethernet adapter overheat.

>>
>>586135538
You can hardly bloat any Linux distro, problem is most likely somewhere in your setup. Before removing and reinstalling anything I would first figure out what is causing performance problems: is it GPU not working at maximum power, CPU throttling or RAM is filled?

Because it was weird.
Also I would care a lot if some kind of short circuit or heatsink failure were going to make it bake itself to death, but it didn't seem to be going higher than 50°C.

Are you still playing Bloodboring? Deadinside's BBport has bunch of variables (https://github.com/deadinside28/bloodborne_pc/blob/master/docs/ENVIRONMENT.md) and some of them aren't clearly documented.
For example, If you struggle to get 60 fps, you can set BB_RENDER_RES=1280x720 to override the internal render resolution. UI is still at 1080p or whatever your output is. With DLSS native AA the image quality is still pretty good. No need for external patches.
BB_RENDER_RES doesn't say much in the documentation though...
>>
>>586148620
For some reason this method gives me way better performance than just lowering DLSS to "ultra performance" for example.
I'm not sure if it's a bug or something or does the game do useless calculations and this prevents it from happening. I can only guess.
I tried BB_RENDER_RES=960x540 too but I don't see much difference in GPU usage either. You never know about these AI slop programs.
Here is the image without DLAA applied but if I toggle it back again in the game, image quality is bad. So I'm suspecting this is a bug and by default the game is doing something useless.
I could never get locked 60 before testing this environment variable, but was hovering around 50ish regardless.

I have a very modest setup, i7-8700k + RTX 3050 6 GB. No, I'm not Indian but I just don't care about games that much and now I'm stuck with my setup for a while because of the market anyway.
Lantern Engine is better in terms of performance but it has other bugs. I suspect that BBport is doing something stupid like rendering the image in two passes or something but I can't prove it and don't really care.
I think it's simply GPU bandwidth issue in my case as this is a workstation card with 70W max. Most people don't notice any software bottlenecks but that doesn't mean they aren't there.
