>>224025796>Favourite horror film?Ooof that’s a tough question. I think horror is one of those rare genres where the best movies came after the middle of the 20th century instead of before it. The 80’s and 90’s seem like the golden age of horror to me. Although I do love those 30’s Universal Monster movies and, to a lesser extent, the Hammer films of the 60’s and 70’s. White Zombie and the movie Bedlam with Boris Karloff are probably my two favorite classic horror movies.

>>224025796>Favourite horror film?Depends on the definition of "horror", I guess.I've seen people argue that suspense is horror. Or anything featuring a psychological trauma. Or surrealism in general. There doesn't seem to be a clear consensus. For some Les Diaboliques (1955) is horror. For some Eraserhead (1977) is horror. For some L'Année dernière à Marienbad (1961) is horror. For some, even M (1931) is horror. There are people who think all of them are, or none, or any subset.I'd say they're all worthwhile in their own right, wouldn't know whether they fit the genre though. So ... what now?>Favourite Harper joint?Tom Harper? Never seen any of his work. Doesn't seem like it would appeal to me.Oh, wait, you mean the actress! Well, I guess Suspiria (1977) overall, particular its visual language. Inserts (1975) has the more solid narrative though, for what it's worth.

>>224036440You'd get a lot of Cale and a good look into the underground NYC art scene of the time. I thought it was pretty neutral when it came to the beef. It was presented "as is" and Cale did a considerable amount of the commentary (throughout the film)I don't recall there being a mention of the anecdote where Cale refused to perform if the band got paid anything
>>224032061Stab skinwalkers, kill skinwalkers, behead skinwalkers, gut skinwalkers like they're fish.
Film should aspire to the heights of music, and music should aspire to the heights of film. Literature, at its greatest is the culmination of both.
>>224036829I'm not sure how my hypothesis holds up under scrutiny, but Lou always struck me as someone who was supremely inspired but lacked the practical knowledge (be it due to a deficiency of formal musical training or sheer stubbornness) to fully articulate his musical ideas. He needed an arranger or producer or collaborator who could curate and refine his writing into something digestible or aesthetically realized. Cale in the (early) VU, Bowie/Mick Ronson in Transformer, Bob Ezrin in Berlin, etc., etc. He definitely made some remarkable music while left to his own devices, but never quite reached the same heights.I find Cale to be more of a full package artiste... I think people are a bit intimidated by his work due to his reputation as the avant side of the VU but he also has a great sensibility for ballads and hooks. Listen to Fear (the album) if you haven't. "Ship of Fools" is a song I hold near and dear to my heart.
international shipping fees have gotten fuckin loony man
>>224037741I'm with you on your hypothesis. I consider songwriting Lou's biggest strength. He has a lot of memorable lyrics but the instrumentation is often so-so. I believe he just wanted to write and the instrumentation was a second thought. It's not BAD per say but just fine, serviceable.I listened to Ship of Fools and it was wonderful <3 I can imagine this being really important to many of his fans. >>224042530I am speaking in a British accent right now, but since this is over text, you're just going to have to imagine the British accent. The thing is that I disagree. I don't think Possession is a good film. I watched it recently, and I also watched Rosemary's Baby recently. Now I'm doing an Irish accent, but anyway, I came to the conclusion that the reason why Rosemary's Baby is so good and Possession is so divisive is because the male lead in Possession is not a very good actor. Isabelle Adjani is a great actress, but she is wasted acting around circles around that man who is British, but he is such a bad actor. And I came to the final conclusion that in order for Possession to be a good movie, it would have to replace the male lead actor, whoever that random guy was, with not only, drumroll please, Mr. John Cassavetes. That is right. John Cassavetes would have saved the movie Possession and elevated it to what it is supposed to be today. I mean that as in what other people speak of Possession today as some great film. It is only going to be like that if we somehow digitally replace the male lead actor in Possession with John Cassavetes. I do believe John Cassavetes would have elevated that film like he did with Rosemary's Baby. Just imagine if the two actors switched places, and that random British literal who was in Rosemary's Baby, and John Cassavetes was in Possession. People would not look back at Rosemary's Baby as fondly because the lead actor is a terrible actor and they would have recognized it. But they would say, Oh man, Possession is a masterpiece, not realizing that John Cassavetes is the reason why it would have been so elevated. It is true. Just look at the man's directorial work. Roman Polanski himself was in awe of John Cassavetes. He is the power. He is the Chad. Roman was the incel.

I think that's why people hate you, you've never considered maybe something you believed in wasn't as right as you thought it was. Dogma is nothing but the ignorance of pride.

>>224043680>do you mean "right" as in objective truth or something morally rightNot him, but those two things aren't mutually exclusive.>I'm an egalitarian person and anything less than a fully egalitarian society is something I can't abideKinda cuts against your claim of being malleable, no? >>224043518Female brain is inferior so your thinking will always be dumb.
>>224043680I mean right as in "truth"... I don't believe in perfect truths, everything is mutable with time and new evidence. I was a nazi in my teenage years, and then I found out new evidence that proved my beliefs were mostly false, so I let them go. Feminism is kinda the same thing; many feminists claim they are all about men and women having the same rights, which is something that theoretically sounds right, but when you watch many of those same feminists act in reality, they're terribly misandric and authoritarian, fascistic even. I once defended a girl that was being harrassed by a man in a club, and instead of being grateful, she shouted at me "do you think I'm helpless, you male pig!". It's for things like that that people hate feminism, but that too, is a partial perspective. There are feminists that do good things, but we can't be so innocent as to pretend every idealistic leftist is actually a good person that acts in accordance to truth and morality. Same goes to cancel culture, etc.
>>224043730I'm malleable in the sense that I adjust my views based on information I internalize. seeing things from a new perspective may or may not change how I view the subject at hand. Let me tell you, it's absolute shit: your sense of justice is as just as a nazi telling the world "I don't care about killing black people, whites though...". Your selective "empathy" is monstrous, you don't care about people or truth, you care about getting a dopamine rush from feeling you're right and feeding your ego the idea that you're a good person, but you aren't one.
>>224043959>But my strong inner sense of justice and morality just refuses to take a binky and accept the current state of thingsI think that you should interrogate whether what you call your "strong inner sense of justice and morality" is really that or actually something else. My rec for this Halloween thread. Its really not Halloween related but it’s the first movie I thought of for some reason.

So what would be David Lynch's creepiest movies besides Eraserhead or Twin Peaks? I wanna watch something weird. Also more surreal horror is welcome too, besides Lynch.

>>224045377Inland Empire is his best.>>224045343Surreal how? Like Bunuel or Smile? I’ll just share two films I watched that satisfied the same fix when I was a young boy requesting the same thing as you: Persona (1966) and Hour of the Wolf (1968). I assume you’ve already watched all of Lynch.

>>224045561>>224045646Even just looking up the name on Google makes me feel like I'm gonna be put on a list>>224045667>Surreal how?Aesthetically. I love my artsy fartsy, pretentious horror willing to doll out uncomfortable imagery. I'm just not a big fan of generic ghosts/aliens/monsters/slashers. I like uncanny and weird over visceral and disturbing.
Top 5 Lynch (in no particular order):1. Blue Velvet 2. Inland Empire3. Lost Highway4. Eraserhead 5. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with MeIt’s not unique, but it’s not supposed to be.

The only people who unironically hate Lynch (i.e. are not baiting) are literal "New Hollywood" fanboys. Or worse, the Spielberg/Abrams/Nolan/Villeneuve (drain)pipeline.
>>224046375Cope.
>>224046400You feel called out?
>>224046375Lynch is so lower level newbie director. Only people new to film would think he is good.
>>224046427Being entry level doesn't necessarily make something bad. I think he's good for that experience level but obviously there's better.
Waiting for anyone to actually explain why they think Leench is a weak or a great filmmaker.

>I must understand the film, and be able to articulate my understanding completely! Big red flag for me unnies!
>>224046415heh.
Very telling that the Lynch guy has to resort to guilt by association tactics to defend Lynch instead of just defending his work directly.
Lynch fans genuinely believe they are above "Nolanslop"
>>224046634The guy who hates Lynch's women remarked on Lynch having particularly shit fans too.
>>224046292It actually wasn’t. People pretending to like it is hilarious. It is like masturbating to something you think others think is attractive but you don’t actually get aroused.

>>224046892That bit with the deer was kinda Lynch-lite but overall, yeah. I think that's what I appreciated most about it.
Lynch was a better director than writer. His best work happened when he wasn't too concerned with storytelling (Inland Empire), or when directing someone else's script (The Elephant Man, The Straight Story).
>>224046885She's so, so good in this.
>>224046929>Inland EmpireNah. I found it waaaay more insufferable than Mulholland Drive or Blue Velvet.

>>224046980I guess I just don't find Lynch's mind interesting enough to care about him communicating in such a way (I find him to be hokey and mawkish in spite of his supposed mystique). Narrative is actually a much-needed crutch for him imho.
>>224046929Elephant Man without Lynch's contributions is just Oscar bait.Elephant Man with Lynch's contributions is still Oscar bait, but at least it's visually interesting. The script itself was melodramatic and in parts over the top. The "not an animal" scene memeworthy (and obviously unscientific).I appreciate that Lynch got involved in the costume and makeup process. Also, the ending is of course quite Lynchian, with the idea of the human spirit eventually transcending the prison that is its body getting alluded to. I think seein potential for that kind of elevation is what drew him to the project in the first place.
>>224046958I love her voice.
