Since it's Halloween, how does necromancy work and how powerful are necromancers in your setting?
>setting
>>98903986fucking a dead body works the normal way, you do it and then the family of the corpse kill you with rocks
>>98903986>how workYou summon a minor evil spirit or a member of the restless dead into a corpse, or use magic to force a member of the restless dead to communicate with you, or use magic to force a soul in Hell or Purgatory to speak with you and really, REALLY hope you don't get caught by other things doing that.As a general rule, any necromancer with the ability to actually compel the dead to do anything rather than just ask wandering ghosts to converse is a magician of manifold and evil powers intended to profane and mock Christ. They are often individually formidable, but they aren't a potent organized force, since it follows that these men and women are selfish, callous, and often well far down the road to Hell.Anything more potent than a seance involves ritual bloodshed or outright murder.
Necromancy doesn't work. Believe me I tried.
>>98904429>Necromancy doesn't workIt should. Life would be so much better if you could just summon an army of undead ghouls whenever you wanted.
>How does necromancy work in your settingLike all other magic, you roll 1d4+INT to see how many spells you can cast that day, and then you gotta pass the casting check or it fizzles.>How powerful are necromancers in your setting?Up to lvl 12 I guess but there's no hard cap.
>>98903986Shoving the souls of the deceased into various objects to reforge said objects into humanoid living things. Everything sapient that isn't a human is the product (directly or indirectly) of some necromancer shoving someone's soul into something that didn't have one.Despite phrasing above, 'object' as defined above includes absolutely anything that isn't currently occupied by a soul. Since the results of the process are sapient things and do not necessarily have any particular loyalty to their creator, the use of corpses as vessels is common to make the resuscitated individual compliant with indentured servitude or slavery, as walking corpses remain pretty unpopular in society at large. Despite aesthetics during (and sometimes after), even the most foul looking of these creatures are alive, though they retain many of the physical qualities of their body despite being twisted into humanoid form. Corpses become what would resemble the undead of other settings, non-living material becomes something akin to a golem or elemental, et cetera.
>>98903986had this artist never seen a skeleton before wtf
>>98903986Almost all magic draws from the Ethereal Plane (a buffer realm between the Prime Material and the infernal planes, and the place from which dreams emanate). When a corpse is animated, a small portion of Ethereal energy is siphoned off and imbued upon it; the corpse recalls and emulates the sensation of mortal locomotion. When spells like Speak With Dead are cast, you aren't actually speaking with the soul of the departed, but a simulacrum of compiled dreams formed from the foam of residual memories floating adrift upon the surface of the mercurial Ethereal Sea.
