Not necessarily assessing the performance, more like trying to figure out what/if I'm missing something
BO1 is a shit format but you can still feel how a deck plays out most of the times, and I do enjoy tweaking things to slightly tilt matchups into my favour

I am revisiting my old collection to order a few singles to finish old projects and while doing so I dusted of my knights vs dragons duel decks.
The most unbalanced decks in the line, but IMO, the best theme in the line.
So in attempt to fix that issue I have made the following changes.

    Knights:
-1 treetop village, -1 sejiri steppe
    +2 selesnya guildgate
an ape is not a knight so the cut was obvious for theme, both cuts are removing a minor combat trick from the deck which was favoured in the matchup, ever so lsightly reducing its power level without speeding up its mana, the replacements are still commons that enter tapped.

    Dragons:
    -1 dragon's claw, -2 armillary sphere, -1 fire-belly changeling
+1 mountain, +2 dragon fodder, +1 dragon hatchling
changeling for hatchling is an obvious non-dragon for its equivalent dragon, the firebreathing is unlimited rather than limited which gives it more late presence but this deck already wins in the late-game so the change there is minor.
the big change is the extra mountain and extra early goblin tokens, it gives a slight improvement on the land drops which didn't always hit and more early chump blocks to deal with the knights early aggression without being overwhelming for it, and potentially more mid mana through skirk prospector or more consistent late damage through voracious dragon.
dragons claw did nothing, it was a dead artifact, the life gain was meaningless, armillary sphere fixed land drops but for too high a cost and too slowly, effectively taking three turns to make the fix, by then you're already done if you needed it, the tokens address that issue differently by preventing some damage getting through while looking for that land drop, which again, has a slightly higher frequency

I believe the specific card swaps are settled, the knights has no questions, the only final statistical variance left is, do i instead go +1 fodder and +2 mountain? did I give too many tokens and not enough land drop fixing?

"Competitive" scenes don't survive by the nature of the game, they survive based on how many shekels are in the prize pool
    >>
    >>98903132
while i would normally agree with you, in this case wotc utterly destroyed the foundation of competitive play. even going below the competitive events at the lgs-level, they completely hollowed out fnms.

The bar is low thobeit. People are asking for simple things like LGS-level support to drive people to play 60-card format whether it be non-garbage promos or precons for standard that dont fucking suck. The prize money is whatever, that comes later, I just wish wotc cared enough for consistent weekly FNMs to happen. Real FNMs, not commander nights.
    >>
    >>98903204
While I will agree, the xitter post is insinuating that Riftbound has more players because the land system sucks, which is forever a braindead take, and not because Riftbound has great prize support.
    >>
    >>98903208
    >precons for standard that dont fucking suck
The challenger decks from a few years back were sweet. I almost want to buy a few of the pioneer ones just to have some cheap but complete decks lying around. Even though they're very outdated for the current format and Lurrus is banned, they'd probably still be fun to match against the others.
    >>

    >>

Unfortunately no proxies allowed except for the championship gold bordered ones and the 30th anniversary cards, and if Im going to shell out $300 for a gold Gaea's Cradle I might as well get the real thing because why does it cost like that for a proxy?
    >>
    >>98903478
Premodern isn't viable without proxies. Most decks play fetches, Ancient Tombs, Mox Diamonds or any other ridiculously expensive cards. All the staples in the format have exploded in price over the last year. Even stuff like Withered Wretch or Smother.
No proxies allowed = Premodern will wither and die.

One of the better moves JotC did to promote showing up to LGS and play Modern during the scamdemic was to giveaway Guides. Even now Guides are still good at what it does.
    >>
Competitive MTG would be a lot more popular if WotC simply had more lower level events. The Pro Tour and the bigger tournaments were cool and all, but the LGS level events were the bread and butter.
It's so weird how WotC structured competitive MTG because now it's basically all grinders and there don't seem to be very many amateur players who don't go to every single big event. I really don't understand why they chose to kill off the smaller events considering this ecosystem took decades to build.
    >>
    >>98902915
As much as magic sucks ass now, I've noticed how Riftbound uses the same tactic as LoL where the entire marketing focuses on shitting on other games instead of telling why their game is good
    >>
    >>98903772
RCQs were basically that actually, but it needs more. Before we had FNMs (with a monthly exclusive card!) and gateway events that gave out promos and were a weekly thing. Somewhere along the way the FNMs went from giving you something like Counterspell to garbage, until they decided to pull it out altogether. In order to entice more people, either they bring these back or they give every player promo packs, win or lose. Something I've noticed in other modern TCGs is that they hand you promo packs even of you go 0-4 during your weeklies, and I think that goes a long way.
    >>
    >>98903779

I can only speak for Legend of Runeterra and 2XKO here since I also enjoy CCGs and Fighting games, but getting exposed to 2 works by Riot getting shitcanned is enough to convince me to not fall for their scam games again
    >>
    >>98903790

I thought that it would be like Edge of Eternities but with Star Trek characters. Instead:
The LCARS frame is ugly and the font is unreadable, the LCARS shocklands have no text on it at all, which is not good
The Classic Enterprise frame is also not that good, I don't understand the theme of it. A bit of a painted version of every character I guess? I mean it's alright but it just feels a bit
Klingon language cards are bad, unreadable, unplayable.
The schematics cards are probably the best ones in the set and it's still a bit disappointing.. I mean you are getting some line art. It's alright, but it's not exactly a chase piece of art that I need to have.
Essentially what I'm saying is that apart from the schematics cards the entire set looks the same to me with different frames. I'm not getting excited because I pull a Kirk with a slightly different style. Does Wotc still not understand what they are competing with?!
Disregard for a moment that this is anime and look at a generic One Piece card that this guy pulled, I'm giving timestamped links: https://youtu.be/EmdncWZmoSU?t=435 or compare to the sp card, if you pull this you know that you pull something special. There is no equivalent in MTG except for headliners which nobody pulls: https://youtu.be/EmdncWZmoSU?t=823 The following would be the headliner/manga: https://youtu.be/EmdncWZmoSU?t=1053
Compare it to a rare TRK card that this guy pulled:
    https://youtu.be/BL566MZH9QE?t=118
This is almost like a parody the way he reacts to this terrible generic surge foil pull: https://youtu.be/UuEtpALbCcU?t=3115
Keep in mind, these surge foils are the best ones you can pull. Lol...
WOTC isn't even in the same *universe* as competitors. Washed out, blurry, bad art and the card will curl and self destruct. There isn't even any art specific foiling on the MTG card. Just cake some generic foil over every card and call it a day.
Shame on Wizards of the Coast! They make more money than ever with worse quality than ever!

I honestly prefer games with a small card pool.
Back before FIRE standard did pull some numbers. Drafts and sealed were crowded as well...

Now standard is like 20 sets and drafts are so boring that people don't care (and the prevalence of bombs that can win the game by themselves does not help)

Each set was designed very carefully from multiple angles, to be drafted by itself, to be cohesive in it's block, to be relatively fair in its standard meta and to be as conservative of potential design space as possible.

Then the design principle of FIRE that other anon mentined took over, blocks disappeared and everything is designed for two perspectives: two be commander viable and also to sell all by itself, these two things cross over a lot, but design space conservation, whole meta consideration and individual set draft consideration vanished, the game is now a sellout power creep trash-fire.

identity marketing, sadly its most of what is out there nowadays. Its no longer "hey check out our cool thing, maybe you could have fun with it" its "be cool, be a riftbound guy, use a riftbound avatar, associate your identity with riftbound NOT other brands". I remember hearing the Steve Jobs quote about branding being about identity, who people see themselves as and who they want to be.. and thinking it was true but disturbing. Its not enough to be a guy who enjoyed comics, you have to be a Marvel fan or a DC fan. You need to "make sure they do the character justice, represent the brand properly" you have to be personally offended when a bad product tarnishes the IP. The product IS YOU. WotC is corpo and old and lame and greedy, riftbound is hot asian gfs who tell you how funny you are when you superchat.

Turning the game into a 4 color kike slop fest year after year is a major issue. JOTC have done literally everything except give mono White power.
    >>
    >>98905192
Weird because my feed is mostly people spouting the most retarded takes imaginable trying to defend WotC in response to Riftbound news posts.
    >>
    >>98905911
4c slop exists because of a lot of contributing factors and it's hard to attack any specific one.
    >Manabase quality
The better color fixing is, the easier it becomes to run more colors. It is unlikely for manabase quality to ever notably diminish below 2c untapped lands, because despite what Xitter warriors will argue, R&D sees lands as a problem to be managed rather than something to be embraced. The mulligan rules had to be reworked 3 times because of how bad mana screw was, and WotC doesn't want tournaments being decided because dimir midrange opened 3 islands 4 black cards twice. Every piece of consistency you remove from lands increases the chance the tournament scene becomes an even bigger joke which is a large problem in the fake of Fake Format(tm) already hogging the spotlight.
    >Low manacosts
The average curve even in a control deck tends to top out around 4 mana, with anything larger usually being cards like Jeskai Revelation (or even Siege Rhino) that will generally stabilize the entire game on resolution even from a poor position. When the vast majority of any deck is cards that cost 1-2 mana it's hard to impose a large color tax in the form of multiple color pips simply because there aren't enough pips in the card's cost to work with.
    >Gold cards
Multicolor cards tend to be more rewarding than monocolor cards. This is a fundamental trait established the moment that R&D realized being multicolor is not an intrinsic upside. A card that costs UU is easier and more consistent to cast than a card that costs RU, so the RU card generally has to be better. However this leads to the situation where 4c decks incidentally have pressure removed from their deckbuilding since this combines with the previous point to make it so they generally don't need to produce more than 1 pip of any color.
    >>
    >>98905016
Lifegain is tier A deck right now. It's either mono white, or with a touch of black. You also have mono white fliers with the new white Hydra, and mono white enchantments deck that are B+.

I get ones that are literally just people schizoing out and QRTing Riftbound news posts that don't mention MtG at all and trying to make weird arguments defending lands as a resource system even though once again they're not mentioned at all in the post.
It's like the community underwent collective psychosis and decided lands was the only thing MtG does well relative to its competitors despite the fact that "lands good" is probably one of the hardest arguments to make when even WotC doesn't fully agree with that.

I don't see how defending lands is a hard argument to make
Magic is at its peak when you aren't given everything on a silver platter, the more concessions meant to undermine that philosophy the worse the game gets
I like having to sculpt a hand, I like having to pivot to a plan B if my deck is having an interesting set of draws.
My favorite thing about the game, hands down, is that it rewards not giving up more than any other game I've played and lands are centrally part of that equation

People generally didn't like tournament grand finals being decided because someone opened the wrong land count. Given that the most recent mulligan revision to minimize mana screw was as recent as M20 it's evident that it's an ongoing issue where lands create non-games.

Why the fuck WotC destroyed a great competitive TCG like Magic in favor of it's most casual and retarded version, Commander? Why couldn't both be supported? Is Commander, a fan made format, really that profitable to shift the entirety of this game?
    >>
    >>98906280
i wonder if competitive MTG would be profitable if wizards would just make actually meta-viable precons.
    >>
    >>98906280
Because they are subsidiary of Hasbro. And Hasbro wants money. And Wotc is the only one making money. And Commander makes more money.

    >>98906272
Blowing up the landfall card tends to also stop landfall.
    >>
    >>98906354
They should make a land with landfall!
    >>
    >>98906278
MtG has FMA which is one of the strongest market advantages possible. I don't think lands are the highlight that makes people want to play the game given that even WotC has not replicated the system since and pretty much the entire game's lifespan has been marked by WotC trying to minimize the chance players don't find lands, not to mention that lands themselves have a colossal amount of runoff effects on gameplay such as compressing mana curves and placing large emphasis on the mulligan.
    >>
    >>98906363
They couldn't even make a land that was bad Reclaim without it causing problems. I suspect a playable landfall trigger on a land is quite a long way off.
    >>
I don't understand how commander is so popular.
It's a pretty fun fuck around format but it seems utterly miserable to play once you get start becoming even remotely competitive in it due to its 4 player nature.
    >>
    >>98906385
Its the "leader based" aspect of it. People nowadays like being represented by a character than the gameplay identory of the decks. This is why more and more modern TCGs follow that trend from FaB to riftbound

It's the same reason why team games are more popular than 1v1 games, there's a whole psychology behind where you just blame the shift onto others instead of yourself, in commander you get the easy way out of "but they ganked up on me 3v1!!!"

4c exists because they actively print overpowered cards in 5+ mana range, and give them mana ramp with Tablet and similar. At the same time, 1-2 drops are neglected. After they banned red agro dominance, it's evident that they don't want to see anything like that again. Decks were too cheap, and didn't depend on rare and mythics, they had to go. All powerup cards have drawbacks now, while 1-2 creatures tend to be weak, and susceptible to abundant board wipes. On top of that, they make sure that everything is legendary, since it's easy to control.

Problem is that they went completely overboard with powercreep. Strixhaven, Edge of Eternities, and Reality Fracture are some of the strongest sets released in the history of the game. It's not that they have cards that need banning, just pure overall strength of their best pieces is enough to severely alter established meta. I really don't think that they don't care about standard and other constructed fromats, but I do think that they actively try to balance the game via powercreep. They see a group of dominant decks, and they fix it by giving more cards to those close behind. Landfall is too strong? Give cards to lifelink. Give stronger boardwipe to red. It's ruining consistency and card economy, though. Card lose value faster, people need to spend more to keep in touch, and they lose interest.

Anon, the land system is what allows for deckbuilding to even exist (and mulliganing properly is a part of this process). Ive played YGO, Riftbound and Grand Archive. YGO just says fuck it with any sort of "resource" system and games are heavily deoendent whether you have the right responses in the first 2 turns of the game. Riftbound's system shoehorns you into the legend that you have. Most of the time you only have 1 or 2 ways to build a deck because thats just how the legend works (Kennen, Master Yi, Riven). Sometimes the legend barely matters (Any aurora deck). Kind of similar with Grand Archive, but with this game, at the very least you have the freedom to choose a legend, up to what level of that legend you'll base your deck on, and what basic element you'll run. My gripes with that game is that using any card as resource while randomly discarding those resources to pay for costs feels TERRIBLE if you're behind since any card can be a resource, and you'll be running out of cards to actually play in order to pay for costs, even drawing 1 card unconditionally is a strong effect.

With MtG, you're not constrained to any color or legendary creature (unless youre playing EDH), you can fine tune your deck to run on 19 lands because your curve stops at 2, or 13 because you run 12 mana dorks, or 25 lands because you're a traditional control deck. You can run ridiculous shit like Landless Belcher/Spy, or 43lands.dec and they WILL work because of synergies only made possible because lands affect deckbuilding. If the alternative to occasional floods/screws is being streamlined to a predesigned leader card or not having any resource system at all, I think I'll stick to lands.
