    >Cyberpunk 2020 vs. Cyberpunk RED?
Cyberpunk 2020 is the second edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG by R. Talsorian Games, set in a (then) future inspired by film noir and the dark science fiction films and books of the late 20th century. It focuses on simulationist gameplay and lethal near-future combat.

Cyberpunk RED is the latest edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG, set after the devastating Fourth Corporate War. It focuses on more balanced, streamlined gameplay and is currently supported by R. Talsorian Games.

So how's the rent in these things?
    >>
    >>98899348
1000-2000eb per month at the minimum(RED).

By our standards V is living in a really good apartment with food and drink access right outside his room
    >>
    >>98899348
Probably depends on where you live, lower floors have lower rent and the higher you go the more expensive it gets. If you were some mundane rando you could probably get a mid tier apartment.

Have any of you folks ever done the Single Player mode for Cyberpunk? Thought of using it to run a quick campaign with the Edgerunners Mission Kit.

Is it just me or is it rather dogshit?
You can just get what they're chipping in your brains at home or with enough money. If I'm paying for a corporate education I better fucking be in the McMansion zone smelling the fake grass and trees and away from the pollution.

Reminds me of a discussion a bit back on which life path would have had the best education. Think it landed on nomad, takes a village styled education, corpo is gonna be very targeted not general, and street kid is lucky to even have one.

I'm looking for a narrative cyberpunk game, not necessarily rules lite but less focused on combat and more on roleplay. Which isn't to say it shouldn't be violent, but I don't want combat simulators like lancer and 5e, and I seem to understand that 2020 and Red fall under that umbrella
    >>
Are Maelstrom women good for you?
    >>
    >>98900101
Use 2020 or Red for the underlying framework(and lore if you're up on that), you don't really need much ruleswise for roleplay and it gives a lot of freedom and tools when it comes to living in the dystopia.

    >>
    >>98900101
Maybe neon city overdrive? It's definitely on the more rules light side, but it treats everything the same, so combat isn't weighted any more than any other system.

There is also The Sprawl, which uses powered by the apocalypse. Ymmv heavily on that one. There is a Forged in the Dark cyberpunk game, but it was really tied to nano machines and climate collapse stuff, not really my cup of tea. And, while still kind of more in the d&d camp, their is Cities Without Number.

In general Human Revolution is how I kind of imagine the corpo world in Europe looking compared to the rough American Military feel of Militech and neo-Japanese feel of Arasaka. Not a common sight in NC, but it's a good place to draw ideas from if you want something different.
    >>
    >>98899641
    Yes, that's how it works.

Kendo gives you the ability to lower Aimed shot penalty with melee weapon, and deflect bullets, bombs with your MA skill.

You can attack with your martial art of unarmed, so like all hybrid martial arts if you have a linear frame it's more efficient to just punch them then use your melee weapon.

Kendo is best for characters who don't plan on going above BOD 10.

Honestly, there's ONE printed NPC with Autofire, which you can't block, and Cut The Bullet can also defend the whole group from explosives since you just need to be in the area of the blast to get a chance to stop it, that level of "nope" against ranged attacks makes using a melee weapon more desirable than an extra die of damage. Especially with the right weapon, like this one.
    >>
    >>98903111
You can still use the melee weapon defensively while punching people, Most melee weapons are one handed. Use your free hand to punch them; hell you could argue you could just kick people while both hands are being used to grip a V heavy melee weapon.

Kendo only increases your offensive potential if you spend an entire action to lower your Aimed shot penalty, otherwise, you're better off punching them, then using cut the bullet when a grenade comes your way. You still need to invest into evasion because cut the bullet can't be used to parry other blades.
    >>
    >>98903188
I'm saying doubles armor ablation is better than unarmed attacks.
    >>
    >>98903224
I would rather the extra 1d6 of damage than ablation, but you do you. That also doesn't really factor into how good Kendo is.

You can use the chain-sword with regular melee, we're talking about how good the martial art is with melee vs punching people without it. And kendo doesn't boost your melee attack apart from aimed shots which lowers you melee ROF, and you lose an entire turn to prep.
    >>
    >>98901538
I would hate to be isekai'd to 2077 dawg, even 2049 is better than '77 simply because I'm not eating shit that tastes like plastic and I can actually eat real ass veg and meat instead of algae shaped like food.

    >>
    >>98903387
    >we're talking about how good the martial art is with melee vs punching people without it
I'm saying that the defensive abilities of Kendo, blocking bullets, stopping explosives, and disarming enemies with aimed attacks, combined with the greater damage potential of head shots, and using a weapon that ablates armor twice as fast, which not only increases your damage but the party's as well, is superior to ROF 2 attacks. Unarmed attacks cap out at 4d6, the same damage as the sword. Stop by a Tech to get it improved to EQ and the effective aimed shot penalty drops to -1, go for the head and your doubled damage is equal to ROF 2 unarmed at any Body. Kendo+Chain Sword is flat out mathematically better than linear frame martial arts.

Why are corporations so demonized in the setting? If people don't like them, they should vote with their wallet and not support what the corportations produce. Also getting a job at corporation, even if you were a test subject of some body horror program, would be way comfier than life on the streets.

    They're called nomads anon.
    >>
    >>98903859
Night City is a walled off city-state that's not part of the NUSA, the corporations don't leave anyone any choice, they're too deeply embedded in everything for there to be any alternatives. Militech IS the US military, you can't use the net without dealing with Netwatch, Arasaka is functionally the government in a lot of parts of Asia. You can go Nomad to minimize their impact on your life, but they're simply too big to cut out completely. You can't even go full innawoods to ditch modern life completely, corporate wars have put so many viruses out in the world that non-lab grown meat is a rare luxury, there's simply nothing left that grows naturally, plant or animal, that is safe to eat. You do business with the corps at some level, or you starve.
    >>
    >>98903859
    >Why are corporations so demonized in the setting?
They aren't, people are quite happy to consume [Product] by [Brand]. Soijacking about corporation being... le bad? is an optional activity.

    >>
    >>98899462
This anon (>>98899587) has the right of it. The point of corporate education is less the education itself and moreso the connections and prestige that comes with saying “I was in the class of 207X in Arasaka Academy”. Even in cases like David’s, where he didn’t give a rat’s ass about rubbing shoulders with the future elite of Arasaka, that school still gave him a massive foot in the door at a secure corporate job that simply wouldn’t have been there anywhere else.
    >>
    >>98903771
Kendo forces you to sacrifice an action to get a slightly better chance at dealing Aimed Shots. You still have a -6 to hit, so I don't see how that's better than a consistent 4d6x2 with no penalty. Any ability that forces you to give up an action better have immense benefit and Kendo's benefit is mediocre at best.
    >>
    >>98904540
Anon, it's at a -2 penalty, it's basically + 6. With an excellent quality melee weapon and solo level 4 accuracy bonus you can disregard the penalty entirely and just roll straights.
    >>
    >>98904589
That's not the issue, it's the opportunity cost of giving up an Action to have a better chance of doing something Next Turn is bad. If you could just do the attack on your turn after doing the check it'd be a decent ability, but as it stands it's just not an efficient use of your turn.
    >>
There must have been a furry apocalypse in the time between Red and 2077. Possibly after all the natural animals were exterminated...
    >>
What do you think of Pondsmith as a GM? I've started watching the videos of him GMing Cyberpunk Red and it's pretty wild to see someone in his position actually running the game they created. Do you think you'd enjoy playing a game with him as a GM just based on how he actually runs games?
    >>
    >>98904751
Lots of detail, quite deep in character portrayals, helps players a lot. Keeps it safe for entertainment platforms™.
However, doesn't know the Red rules by memory- so hasn't played it that much.
    >>
    >>98904751
I would absolutely love to be one of his players, if for no other reason than to see the most "as intended" cyberpunk experience possible. I haven't had a chance to watch any of it to see if he's good at it, but I'd want to do it regardless.
    >>
    >>98904616
Only getting the called shot bonus every other turn is the only drawback, and considering you can only reasonably get hit by autofire it's still extremely worth it.

This guy is trolling you and you should stop replying.

But regarding the topic at hand, I think the steelman for most of the baffling balance decisions in the game is that combat is easy with a modicum of optimization, and PCs are given generous enough budgets that purchasing inefficient combat skills/equipment is going to impact your character's efficacy way less than how much of your budget you spent on combat-only options and/or how niche your noncombat options were (e.g. picking Pilot Sea Vehicle vs picking Library Search or Streetwise).

Once that bullet is bitten, Kendo still kinda sucks, but on a low-chrome build, you get a couple of niche benefits (unarmed option, middling/niche defensive option) and then one option (Ki Ken) that's basically a trap unless you're starting engagements 2 Move Actions away from ranged enemies.
Pound-for-pound, is a melee weapon build better off taking Melee Weapons and Shoulder Arms only, then using a popup Mono-Wakizashi as its main arm and an AR as a sidearm when it can't close gaps in one turn? Yeah, probably.
But if you're using any kind of HMW/VHMW and still bought Evasion to 14, you'll do okay (but not great), even if you're mistakenly spamming Ki Ken all the time.
    >>
Been thinking about it since it came up last thread and I do wish they'd add more BODY 10 items and BODY 14 items; I don't mind needing chrome to use stronger weapons but I'd prefer if there were more reason to go for Beta frames or GM/BL-only builds instead of Sigma giving you basically everything.
