Welcome to Open OSR. This is a separate thread is for open discussions of OSR, OSR-adjacent and retro games. You can talk about all OSR (Pre Wotc D&D, & retroclones) & OSR-adjacent (Mork Borg, SWN etc) games without distinction here.

There is a general for those who only want to talk about "first decade" D&D. If that is your preference, you can find that elsewhere.
As always, report and ignore any trolling

    Thread Question:
Anyone run this or other weird fantasy settings?
    >>
    All fantasy settings are weird.
    >>
    >>98895004
I think some people really like building on the familiar with a town, a village, a windmill sort of fantastical tropes more aimed at the shire or the keep on the borderlands and other fantastical settings have more over the top or unusual things from the start like gas spores that cause mutation and insect labour creatures.

While they can be a matter of perspective a lot of that requires contextual explanations that work a lot better than pithy one sentence nothings.
What's weird about your fantasy setting in your game anon?

Mine's set in proximity enough to a ferry woods there's a chance of having a fey or forest like mutation from character generation and it increases with exposure I track. I'm primarily using the mutation table in the back of Gardens of Ynn, but am considering using different tables in different places in the world and using the idea that humans are metaphysically unstable.

    >he tries to run it in a highly surreal fashion where we find out afterwards every room in the castle was based on an emotion and the more you acted on that emotion the more powerful your actions were
    >during the game it all just felt nonsensical and the overall feeling was listening to someone describe a dream they had

It was the most artsy-fartsy game.
    >>

    >Anyone run this or other weird fantasy settings?
Define "weird". I am planning to run a Howardian campaign using the ACKS Heroic Fantasy Handbook. Does it count?
    >>
    >>98895073
Might, what sort of things have you done that seem off from what steroytypical fantasy tropes in other forms have you decided to run that make it more howardian?

The hero points in Barbarian Conquerors of Kanahu are a way to have a more connan like feel were you going to port those over?
    >>
    >>98895073
Have you looked at Worlds Without Number? I think you'll have a better experience overall and your players will be extremely grateful you did. It's such an easy upgrade.
    >>
    >>98895073
I definitely think that some of the rules of the ACKS Heroic Fantasy Handbook qualify as weird. For example, the disfigurement and mutations that result from Shaded Magic. Picrel.
    >>
    >>98895108
    >what sort of things have you done that seem off from what steroytypical fantasy tropes in other forms have you decided to run that make it more howardian?
There's literal rules in the ACKS Heroic Fantasy Handbook for that. No need for me to make any changes to it.
    >>
    >>98895073
    >Howardian campaign
You should definitely try out Hyperborea. It's latest edition is probably the best B/X-based game to run Conan-style pulp games in.
    >>
    >>98895113
Sine Nomine/Kevin Crawford is pretty great and has their own take on conan like sword and sandals but its in the Crimson Tide and Scarlet Heroes, or even Spears of Dawn if you want the real pulp homages. There was the Lovecraft one too, I forget what that's called and it has some amazing tables in it for making your own mythos like strange monsters and cults.

They do get along well with Macris, there was a good forum discussion where they went over pros and cons of each other's domain systems in a fair and even handed way. Kevin even backed ACKS II.

He's very likely from here given his local lord shitposting in his own game
    >>
    >>98895113
I'm not a fan of Kevin Crawford's stuff, but he's backed the ACKS kickstarter, so he's based.
    >>
    >>98895132
That's supposed to be weird? That's all so uninspired and bland. It feels like something AI generated.
    >>
    >>98894987
Why would you make an "ecological science fantasy" setting for a horror game instead of the gorillion fantasy games that already exist in the OSR? Would have made a very interesting ACKS setting for example.
    >>
    >>98895137
    >You should definitely try out Hyperborea.
Hyperborea is okay, but it just adds a couple classes and that's it.

The game still feels 100% Vancian from the rules point of view. The ACKS Heroic Fantasy Handbook rewrites the magic system to bring it in line with Howard/Tolkien magic. There's literally zero reasons to play Hyperborea as far as I'm concerned.
    >>
    >>98895137
    >B/X-based
    >>
    >>98895139
    >>98895144
I think WWN is a straight upgrade to playing ACKS, because it lets you do the stuff ACKS tried to promise it could do but in a way that isn't such a time sink. ACKS hasn't really aged well and ACKS2 wasn't any sort of upgrade, while WWN answers how to do things in ways that actually make sense for a game.
    >>
    >>98895157
The ACKS heroic fantasy magic is terrible. You've never played a game in your life.
    >>
    >>98895145
If the immediate confusion about what weird means has taught me anything its that there's a wide range to it and that's likely part of why it works as a term.

What weird tables or elements are you using in your games or seen that you'd like?

These ones >>98895132 have a classic horror monster weirdness more towards dracula and gothics than pulps to them, the Frightening to Beasts one is especially evocative. There's not as much variety as I tend to like with my tables but its filled out in a more mechanical way people can use easily so I can see the appeal.
    >>
    >>98895167
You should read that discussion Crawford participated in about the differences between AER (the pre-Without Number game of his that was relevant at the time; same essential rules and same principles) and ACKS. He himself feels that ACKS and his games both do very good and valid things and he simply happens to prefer something else at his table, so when you say WWN is an upgrade you're disagreeing with the guy who actually wrote WWN. Consider whether you just don't understand the games well enough (e.g. because you're a nogames who's never played or even read either).
    >>
    >>98895167
    >>98895176
They're 100% just trolls spamming about ACKS and exaggerating how useful/good they think it is because they know it's annoying and they hope to drag people into arguments over that objectively bad game. Just let them say what they want, it's not like anyone who looks in a book won't immediately realize how bad it is.

Wholeheartedly disagree. It sounds like he was just trying to be nice. And, it makes sense, because he made a game that basically undermines any reason to play ACKS, and avoiding the notoriously autistic ACKS trolls unbridled neuroticism with some half-hearted lipservice is a smart move.

I think because Mothership was hot topic at the time. I don't see it much here anymore. I've browsed the Cloud Empress stuff for bits to keep but don't think I'd use Mothership as a base system in most cases. There have been a few threads about it here, might get more information from the horror general.

That being said, I suspect many people like the lighter build of a lot of Nusr or arty indie games than the mechanical weight of ACKS games. There's things I see that are interesting but nothing I'd keep whole cloth or try to run as is, just more granularity than I enjoy or find useful.
    >>
    >>98895244
Have you looked at anything, at all, about the game, or anything that the creators have said about it? It's a 1E clone. Even if they'd taken the combat wholesale from Moldvay it wouldn't matter, it's still a 1E clone.
    >>
    >>98895211
Thanks for the link, Anon. Good discussion overall, and Kevin makes an excellent summary of the differences between his stuff and ACKS. I still prefer ACKS by a nautical mile, but it's give me more respect for Crawford.
    >>
    >>98895260
    >I think because Mothership was hot topic at the time.
Well, I'll put my cards on the table, then: I totally agree with your guess, and to my mind, that makes Cloud Empress low-effort sloppa published to bandwagon some sales off the latest fad system. Which makes it unlikely that anyone's played it, especially for an extended time, and also unlikely that the average anon would find much worth salvaging in it. A ways back in /nusrg/ some anon was pushing The Painted Wastelands and he didn't get much response either, for the same reasons.

(Mothership IMO was pretty much killed dead by that article which showed that their first-party modules didn't follow their own scenario design advice, I know the guy claimed he didn't want to rip on the game itself but the effect was a sharp dropoff)

    >That being said, I suspect many people like the lighter build of a lot of Nusr or arty indie games than the mechanical weight of ACKS games.
To some extent that's obviously fair, I just used ACKS as an example (plus I think the granularity would work really well with an ecological focus). That said, I do think that a lot of the ultralight preferrers are not far better than nogames; they want to run games but they don't want to put in ideally any effort at all to do it, which is a terrible mindset for a prospective referee to have IMO. Also there's a group of literal nogames who seem to prefer ultralight systems because that means less rules text getting in the way of them reading setting books like novels or disrupting their imaginations with concrete limitations in the form of systems.
    >>
    >>98895286
Definitely. The key point in this context is that Crawford clearly respects ACKS and Macris' work on it, and anybody trying to push the Sine Nomine games as a replacement to ACKS rather than a complement is just an ignorant troll trying to create division where there isn't any.
    >>
    >>98895260
    >That being said, I suspect many people like the lighter build of a lot of Nusr or arty indie games than the mechanical weight of ACKS games. There's things I see that are interesting but nothing I'd keep whole cloth or try to run as is, just more granularity than I enjoy or find useful.
I enjoy very granular games, which is why I really don't enjoy ACKS when its granularity just comes off as tedious rather than meaningful. High granularity also works far better with more modern systems like GURPS or d20 which were built with wide foundations and designed to work with lots of modifiers, while churning out awkward rules to put on top of B/X leaves it in an space where it doesn't feel like an OSR game but it also feels bogged down by random OSR sacred cows. The way it handles race and class, and really characters in general is such an awkward and misguided effort.
    >>
    >>98895324
    >Which makes it unlikely that anyone's played it,
I think there's podcasts and streams of people playing it, so that doesn't really hold. Found this one in 5 seconds of google.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqNGVxE-e-8

Not even sure what the Painted Wastelands are but I'll check it out.

I thought the article about mothership was useful as well and turned me off it if we're thinking of the same one.

There's lots of things I look at, take a bit from, a table or a piece of art and an idea, I'm not too worried about authorial intent or some sort of state of the union.

I do run mostly light games on the regular so I'm sure how they can simultaneously be no games and running ultralights. Its okay, doesn't sound like they're a thing you'd enjoy but that doesn't really matter?
    >>
    >>98895344
    >I think there's podcasts and streams of people playing it, so that doesn't really hold.
Anyone IN THIS THREAD, genius. Every piece of sloppa's been played by *somebody* in the world that you can google. That doesn't mean that you can necessarily get an experience-based conversation about it going here in this general.
    >>
    >>98895340
    >The way it handles race and class, and really characters in general is such an awkward and misguided effort.

It's an example of "sunk-cost fallacy" as design. It kept building on top of certain assumptions, and all those assumptions tied into other assumptions, and it never stopped to look back and see if there was a better way of doing things before things grew out of hand and it became impossible to change things. So, it just plodded forward, trapping itself further.

This is even the reason it doesn't really work as a system to just randomly grab tables from, because it's all tied to its weird setting that's generic but not in a classic generic fantasy fashion, so you either accept all the weird little assumptions it makes or you have to change so much that there's no point in even using it as a base.

    >TQ
No. I try to make my worldbuilding as easily digestible as possible. I want my players to have a mental image of the game world.

I tried using its travel rules and my group didn't like them at all. I wanted to give it its fair chance and use the procedures like they were in the book, but just travelling to one town had everyone zoning out halfway.

    >>98895437
Yeah, I get that. It's a drawback that comes from trying to have a really big system where so much is trying to be integrated into everything else; you lose a lot of flexibility.
    It's like a jenga tower.

The whole game is a mix of that with some mild cringe every once in a while. Not LotFP levels of deliberate edginess and cringe, just "boomer with bad taste, out-of-touch grandpa who thinks he's cool" stuff.

A lot of these OSR-adjacent games have given me newfound appreciation for the original TSR stuff, particularly how energetic and imaginative it was compared to most of its contemporaries. It's easy to forget Gygax was still in his thirties when he was making OD&D and AD&D, like how people are so used to seeing pictures of Albert Einstein as an old man and not realizing he was only 26 when he published his Special Theory of Relativity and did most of his most famous work in his thirties.

Younger Gygax wasn't just pulling ideas from from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, he was grabbing stuff from books and movies made right as he was writing. He was being inspired not just by Conan and LotR, but the Chronicles of Amber and The Destroyer and other 70s books. From our modern perspective his sources may be a little dated, but as the games were coming out they were really riding the current flow of fantasy (and also helping shape it).

A lot of these OSR-adjacent games feel like Dad-rock cover bands. Missing the core of what made the originals great in a way that just highlights why the originals were great.

    >(same essential rules and same principles)
AER is not WWN. AER is basically just a domain sim with mass combat you're supposed to add on top of games, and WWN is much more complete system, which distills the essence of stuff like domains into much more practical rules in addition to having a lot of other material with influence from his Stars Without Number approach to big sandboxes. It's a step forward in design instead of just spinning its wheels.

You really should look at WWN. And also you shouldn't be stuck in ideas from over a decade ago and inexpertly trying to apply them.

Their entire point is to monetize boomer fantasy nostalgia, not to nail the cultural zeitgeist of our era.
Along with some identity politics, you have some chuds liking your games for that reason alone.

There's a right way to go about it though.
Faithful nostalgia that matches the original and makes it more accessible? That's how you get those retroclones like OSE and those are fine.

An effort to explore the original creative spirit, with the originals as inspiration instead of dogma? That's the "NSR" route, and also fine.

Making a game that feels like you only ever learned one game and you don't know how to evolve beyond making more of the same? Those are depressing, like seeing the last surviving member of an otherwise extinct species and it's a sterile male.

Real boomers just play the originals they bought decades ago. Younger people who actually play games don't care about shit boomers are nostalgic about, just like they don't care about He-man or Ghostbusters even though boomer execs want them to.

it's not real boomer nostalgia, but usually 30+ years old guys that associate themselves with boomers and their taste because they dont like the modern cultural zeitgeist for all the reasons you would expect.
These are the purists self reported purists.
It's common really, the generation that lives something doesn't bother too much with defining it, they understand that reality is messy and they just live in it.
It is always in retrospect that things gets simplified, lines get drawn etc
You can do the same for the death of punk, the death of oldschool gaming, or any other thing really.
So you have those new age purists feeling nostalgia for something they never lived and have romanticized to infinity and beyond. At the same time you have people starved for any identity that can differentiate them from others and allow them to create an ingroup. And that's how you get people getting who spend half of their precious free time trolling one another and arguing for the same thing 1000 times in a row.

Not really. Most people on the OSR scene are Gen-X. Alexander Macris, for example, the author of ACKS (picrel), is one.

The thing about us Gen-X is we developed a taste in RPGs before "AD&D" 2e came out, so we could instantly recognise it for the crap that it is. The real cancer is Millennials who grew up with the dogshit edition and can't tell a module from a nover, because 2e modules and settings were just bad novels meant to be read, not games to be played.

My prediction is that when their game finished dying, they'll have to move on to some new obsession. All numbers you can find about it are in decline, so it's just a matter of waiting it out for a little while longer. Even just a comparison from a year ago is pretty stark.

Yeah, the Baleygr is one of my favourite ACKS monsters as well. Fun fact: it is an actual Old Norse word meaning "one with flaming eyes". Lots of fantasy-sounding ACKS II monsters have actual historical names.

Completely agree: Our based mods and jannies finally put their foot down and stopped the worst of the hijack attempts and much of trolling against /osrg/, ACKS, and the BrOSR. Discussions are much better now than one year ago.

Absolutely correct. Only our resident nogames tourist might have come up with that bullshit about 30 year old and boomers - not that there's anything wrong with either of those demographics, but the OSR movement is overwhelmingly spearheaded by Gen-X guys.

Nice Macris picture by the way.

Shadowdark is fine. It's got gimmicky shit, but you can ignore those and it's still pretty fun.
Way more popular than it should be though. I think it's mostly because it's got tight graphic design and it's really baby friendly.

I looked into Shadowdark and passed on it. Nothing jumped at me as particularly a reason I had to run it or play it.

the guys who make the games are older but you and every other you that purchases these games is somewhere in their 30s or 40s.
And still none of those was an adult at the self reported golden years of oldschool gaming. They just played on vibes like kids do at best.
Their nostalgia is more real and more fake at the same time because they look at things through the rose tinted glasses of childhood.

Either way posts like this demonstrate exactly my point.
You feel compelled to showcase your identity by another inane posts that argues about a single semantic line as if people in their 50s arent older than 30 years old like i wrote.
You try so hard to define yourself through hating things, truly a reactionary.

i have never heard about durf before.
from a simple google search it looks like another uninteresting nusr lite game.
I am not against nusr titles per se, but they must have something interesting for you to play them at the very least.
Shadowdark is a 5e osr hack. I have never played 5e and i dont have any friends that play 5e so i dont need to use this in order to bring them over to the osr side.
One thing i have to say in favor of shadow dark is how much new 3rd party content it's getting. If you like something modern with new adventures coming out all the time then you have a ton at your disposal.
I have though of converting some a couple them to another system and it is fairly simple but still a hassle

Talk about games. What do you think about the Beastman (Humanoid in D&D parlance) Tribal Traits in ACKS?

Every time a Humanoid tribe is encountered, the DM can roll on the table in picrel and make the tribe special because of some kind of mutation or behavioural trait. As a DM, I had started to feel bored about D&D Humanoids, and this ACKS table really made me renew my love for them.

    Thoughts?

What's your favourite Custom Magic Type from ACKS II?

    Mine is definitely Summoning.

    >The issue
AD&D (the real one, 1e) has a bunch of spells called "summon", "call", or "conjure", but these terms are NOT used in a logical manner, and their descriptions are vague, which leads to endless debates on e.g. Dragonsfoot
    https://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=28343
    https://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=95621

What Macris has done is harmonising these three types of Summoning spells. Now the terms are used in an internally coherent manner.

    >Inb4 it's too heavy
Not at all. These are DM-facing guidelines for the creation of new spells. All that a player sees are the spell lists and spell descriptions, like in any First Decade D&D rulebook, and the descriptions of what the spells do are clear and coherent with one another.

Add it to the long list of reasons ACKS is the first game to complete and improve on O/A/B/X D&D. Is it perfect? No, it is just the only game that does this kind of thing.

One thing O/A/B/X D&D lacks IMHO is strong arachnid monsters. AD&D has a bunch of spider monsters up to 5+5 HD, and then nothing much. Yes, there's Lolth, but she's a goddess. Yes, there's Retrievers, but the laser/beholder eyes are a bit of a tonal mismatch IMHO. Yes, there's Driders, but they're really setting-dependent and tied to the Deepearth.

This is why I really like Demonic Attercops from ACKS. Archetypal spider monsters (with stealth, fear, regeneration, venom, knockdown, and mundane damage immunities) that are really good for mid-level parties.
    >>
Very nice! I think I will steal them for my B/X game.

Also their simplicity really show how little the ACKS detractors know about the game.

I like that the orc is the "baseline" Chaotic humanoid in this and has an equal chance of every trait, while the other humanoids (well, "beastmen" I guess) have differing rates of traits according to how they diverge from orcs as a type.

DURF's resolution mechanic being unkind as a means of encouraging players to be thorough in their planning and descriptions so as to avoid an unnecessary roll was kinda cute. The stress mechanic was okay, and I liked that in melee you could get hit by anyone you swung on.

Spells being open ended is probably hit or miss, the art is ok when it isn't full tumblr, I'd say it was worth a read but probably wouldn't pivot to it.

I'm fairly sure you can't get an exp4erince based conservation going in most cases on /tg/ because of the huge quantity of people who don't actually play or at least the easy of which they can post compared to the amount they play.

The troll thread to this one is a great example of that.

Mothership was certainly talked about by people playing it when it was newer but its a horror game, which oddly enough to bring up on the day it is today, are falling out of indie nerd game fashion. They were a thing for a few years for sure though.

Why do you want to police everyone's discussions? Just apply to be a janitor and let other people talk.

Very powerful item that should give the ship the capacity to more or less destroy all deck crew and rigging of its target with no real way to do anything about it. Not a thing I would use in my game much unless it was already high level lots of magic item haul sort of stuff.

That it doesn't even get to what the item does until 2/3rds down the description doesn't incline me to look at their other material if I have to skim that much to even get to what it does.

The Jutland joke is fun though.
    >>
    >>98904547
It is pretty good, but I don't think it's game breaking. It has a range of 120 feet. That's the length of a trireme, so at the scale of a naval battle it's basically touch range. In a one-on-one battle that's deadly, but against more ships the others will ram into you, pin you, and board you while you destroy one, assuming they have the morale and motivation of course.

And an intelligent sea monster can just swim under and attack the stern.
    >>
    >>98904635
I'd be putting it on smaller faster boats and using it to burn down ports if we get to do imagination war. If your naval combat is Peloponnesian War era themed it is significantly less useful in large scale engagements for sure though, is that what you're up to? I haven't seen any dnd or osr naval combat that would be enjoyable at that scale. I'm much more familiar with most ttrpg naval combat being a handwave mix of 1400-1800s with no real understanding or concern for anything with more than 2-3 boats and a bit of nautical themes.

Sea monsters should be wrecking everything with no consequences at all. They can swim under the boat and attack it bellow the waterline to remove a plank or two, at which point the boat sinks. Or take out the rudder and disassemble it at their leisure.

I'm familiar with Trireme, Don't Give Up The Ship, etc. None of them are very good games.

What have you run for naval battles in your OSR or OSR adjacent game? Doesn't matter if they're stock, its about what you've done or used and how it worked, that's how you evaluate the magic item you brought up and wanting to talk about games. >>98904528

How does ACKS accurately detail sea monsters having the necessary upper hand in all naval combats to the point its laughable?
