Structurally speaking.

Where do you even start?

Do you just take notes and compile them into a bigger story?
Do you outline possible events with greentext/story beats?
Do you put everything in one file?

How do you go about it?

I wouldn't know, I've never written a module before.

For your own use, or for others to read/run?

start with the dungeon, then fill out the lore once you have the map down.

I ask SI to do it for me. It's 2026, not 1986.

Start with a map (using dunegeonscrawl which is FREE) and work from there

I start off with some epic set piece and work backwards to determine the best way to get my players there. I try to dot all i and cross all t so they cannot divert from the path I set.

The first thing I do is think of how I want this game to make players feel.
Be it relief, or dread, or regret or hopeful.

Then I just start dumping ideas into a massive text file and let it slowly take shape over time. The formal write up happens waaaaay later.

Well the last one I did I had a theme. I had chatgpt generate the map and I filled in the encounters myself.
