I'm tired of entitled players wanting to control everything. Learn to let go and have fun. Random characters are great, you don't get overly attached to them and if they die its no big deal. Some people forget its just a game.

Personally i like systems that are semi random, where you roll a die and get a choice of options, but pure randomness is fun too.

I'm over trying to visualize my self insert protagonist, I no longer need to model my behavior after my ideal self or as much need for power fantasy. I want to introduce the element of chance and danger to my character, I'm tired of messy complex systems that take hours and can endlessly be tweaked and modified, that was fun back in the day but I'm sick of it, min maxing just isn't as fun as used to be, especially after playing so many different systems and basically breaking them instead of trying to work within the expectations and limitations of the system.

I want to adapt to new systems, not twist them to suit me.
>>
Is your problem the real problem you're having with your group or are you complaining about fictional players who live in your head?
If you're playing a superheroes game like with 5e, Storyteller, M&M, PF, of course your players want to control everything.
Randomness is for squishy games like BX, RuneQuest, WFRP, CoC, and so on. The purpose of such PCs is to die sooner or later. Superheroes don't die.
>>
so you are unable to find people who like things that (you) like?
>>
>>98886213
I think some people have been doing fully or partially random character creation all along. It hasn't been long since I last rolled up a WHFRP 4E character for a game. Can something that's never been gone make a comeback? I doubt it's ever going to become the most common way of making characters again, as most people, at least by my best guess, prefer having more control over chargen.
>>
>>98886213
>Might Make a Comeback
OSR style games with random character generation have been hip for about a decade inspector pepe. Find or run those or their derivatives, there's lots.
>>
>>98886230
The fuck you on about?

I'm talking about new games and new rulesets, new settings. Stop being a sperg.
>>
>>98886213
>I'm tired of entitled players wanting to control everything.
That's not why structured chargen exists, but why shouldn't someone want to actually be able to play a character that doesn't suck shit because of bad RNG?
>Learn to let go and have fun.
They are; you're just mad they're having fun in a way you don't like.
>Random characters are great
For dungeon crawls where you aren't intended to make actual characters, just statblocks.
>you don't get overly attached to them and if they die its no big deal.
And this is why. If you want an actual campaign, you use structured chargen. If you want beer and pretzels dungeon crawls, you do random chargen.
>Some people forget its just a game.
It's not just a game, it's also a narrative experience. Again, unless you're just doing beer and pretzels dungeon crawls where the characters as people don't matter and they just exist to stab shit and roll checks.
>Personally i like systems that are semi random, where you roll a die and get a choice of options, but pure randomness is fun too.
Then run/play those kinds of games with likeminded people. If you can't find likeminded people, then accept you're in the minority.
>I'm over trying to visualize my self insert protagonist
Why the fuck would you do that for a TTRPG character? You aren't your PC.
>I want to introduce the element of chance and danger to my character,
That's what the dice rolls during the game are for, retard.
>I want to adapt to new systems, not twist them to suit me.
You don't need RNG chargen to do that. It sounds to me you're just burned out.
>>
>>98886251
There's a new system being released every few days. Something has to suit your needs, but good luck getting anyone to play something they've never heard of.
>>
>>98886248
>>98886250
lol, your out of touch my guy, in 5th people generally take a standard array, they don't roll at all.

Saying fucking OSR is popular is ridiculous, your a minority of a minority, generally played by crusty old grogs.
>>
>>98886270
You should reread those posts, as you seem to have misunderstood them. I outright said that most people like more controlled chargen, but also that random character creation's never been gone.
>>
>>98886213
No I don't.
Next question
>>
>>98886258
oh my god, you're such a wuss dude. Let me tell you a secret; Hamlet dies in the end.

This is exactly what i mean, you are afraid to lose a game of pretend.
>>
>>98886275
its my thread asshole, how bout YOU leave, and take your off topic bs with you.
>>
>>98886266
yeah and they all suck, don't they?
>>
>>98886213
why are theater kids so terrified of the simulationist aspect of role playing games? why are they so afraid to engage with the ludo narrative and so intent of following the script? All you ever hear is how the DM is railroading you through their adventure but the minute your character is granted any real sense of autonomy, you scream bloody murder because your actions have consequences and the world doesn't conform to your power fantasy.
>>
>>98886297
I've seen how theater kids play d&d and they are terrible at it. They constantly rely on the DM to pull a dues ex machina to put the adventure back on track and pull their bacon out of the fire, its just one contrivance after another for the sake of the 'strory'. There is no element of chance and zero risk of failure, yet somehow you manage to fuck it up anyway.
>>
>>98886288
Most 'games' don't need to exist. I imagine most devs actually want to make supplements, settings and so on but they can sell them for more if included in a separate game nobody wants to play. In ideal world we could have stopped making new games back in the 90s, but then again there were no good licensing deals to be had back then. Developing material for someone else's system is crazy come to think of it.
What we really need is Linux of TTRPGs.
>>
>>98886270
>OSR style games with random character generation
>Oh you mean 5th edition?!
lol
>>
>>98886213
What i mean is if you can see why its fun, the risk adds an element of excitement that wasn't there before. Playing a crappy character can be a fun challenge, you might even grow attached to a character who is suboptimal because they are flawed and its a fun challenge.
>>
>>98886313
>What we really need is Linux of TTRPGs.
yeah, and I'll bet its about as popular as linux too. people crave novelty, or at least the illusion of it.
>>
>>98886313
>Most 'games' don't need to exist.
Explain what need means here and how you have come to define it.
>>
>>98886213
I had this idea for a system were character death is baked in. Everytime you get involved in a violent encounter, you assign each player a number. You roll a d6, if their number comes up, they die!
>>
>>98886346
that guys not OP, just some rando chiming in.
>>
>>98886355
Not too worried about that. More curious how people decided what games
>need
to be and what don't.
>>
>>98886279
>Let me tell you a secret; Hamlet dies in the end.
Yes. Hamlet is a story where that's sort of the point. Unfortunately for your shitty argument, most main characters do not. Also, Hamlet is overrated.
>This is exactly what i mean, you are afraid to lose a game of pretend.
You can't lose a TTRPG because it's a cooperative storytelling game, at least not in the traditional sense. But a character dying for no reason, or worse yet a game where a character is probably going to die to some random bullshit for no reason other than you rolling like ass against a simple trap or one attack from one glup shitto enemy, means there's no point in developing a character if they're going to be replaced every 5 seconds.

Meatgrinders are only good if you want beer and pretzels dungeon crawls. If you want a real roleplaying game where there are stakes and characters and any semblance of a greater world beyond decrepit holes in the ground full of randomly generated loot like you're playing Borderlands or Skyrim, then player character death should be rare, meaningful, and thus impactful. If you're about to argue that PC death is the only meaningful stakes, you're just bad at roleplaying.
>>
>>98886288
Then make your own you lazy faggot.

>>98886313
That's called GURPS and it's dogshit.
>>
If I'm going to spend months playing that character, I want to actually enjoy doing so.
I'm ok with randomly rolled PCs when it's a one-shot.
>>
>>98886346
I'm saying that RPGs have been figured out decades ago. Almost anything fits into categories like OSR, d20, d100, 2d6, 3d6/GURPS, Storyteller, Fuzion, Silhouette, Interlock, Cepheus, whatever system and those board game-likes or trading card games. Everything is a derivative of one of those. There is no need for a new game unless it comes with a new system.
So many games existing is the consequence of legal problems. Nobody wants to deal with licensing so they make up shitty little systems that are just the old ones with a coat of paint (not fresh, but the random discarded paint bucket you'd find in the trash)
>>98886355

This board is so exhausting.
>>
>>98886452
Nothing new under the sun, eh Ceaser? Fuck off, novelty exists whether you think it does or not. There is no precedent for the computer or splitting the atom, and if you think the world is going to stop turning and coming up with new things just because were on the decline your stuck in the past.
>>
>>98886475
We don't. It would be better if the games went public domain after 2d12 years after their last first party publication.
>>98886484
Novelty? Let me guess another FATE, but this time with two meta currencies on top of it?

Get some air, eat something. Read a book or otherwise cut down on screen time. Maybe even play a game. It'll be okay.

I don't have an original idea, i want to experience other peoples original ideas.

Or rather I do, but I don't have the means or the inclination, and even I did that doesn't mean I don't want to experience other people new and interesting ideas.
>>
>>98886452
>Everything is a derivative of one of those.
Yeah when you boil anything down to its most base essence that's true. When you ignore nuance like a drooling retard, everything looks the same. But that's what nuance is for.
>There is no need for a new game unless it comes with a new system.
Factually untrue.
>Nobody wants to deal with licensing so they make up shitty little systems that are just the old ones with a coat of paint (not fresh, but the random discarded paint bucket you'd find in the trash)
That's not the case at all. This just shows you have no experience with TTRPGs - but that's fine, I could already tell you're a nogames from your first post.

Live, Love, Loot, my brudder.
>>
>>98886504
There's no such thing as original ideas. Everything ever has been done before. It's about how you do that thing.

That's why structures like the Hero's Journey exist. Different stories can follow that structure, but wind up drastically different depending on how it's spun. The characters, the overall plot, the events of the story, they all define something more than the fact they follow that structure.

The same is true with TTRPGs. It's not about original, it's about it being interesting. It's about what makes each system unique. It's why generic systems are so dogshit, because they have no actual identity and thus are bland.
>>
>>98886493
>we don't
Okay, so you've maybe gotten the rough of it.
Its entertainment, you can either go
>we don't need entertainment
and speed run to your cube and die or something idk, or end up realizing that because entertainment isn't about efficiency there isn't any way to separate what's needed and what's not except for your own activities and those that work the best for your group. The variety, much of which you missed because you think there shouldn't be anything after the 90s (even though you included osr which is weird but whatever), is important so that people can find, modify or make what they need.
Not complicated just doesn't fit your dejected narrative where you get to define what everyone else needs based on your preferences.
>>
>>98886525
>There's no such thing as original ideas.
utter horseshit. its what uncreative people say to make themselves feel better about being imitators.
>>
>>98886463
>I don't have half a million dollars to hire a production team to make my unprofitable heartbreaker.
If you're doing it for profit, you've already failed as a developer. Make the game you want because you want it to exist, not because it's going to make you a morbillion dollars.
>ugh, (sigh) what a crybaby.
Yeah, you are. You come onto this board, whine about how WOW NOBODY PLAYS GAMES HOW I LIKE then accuse others of being whiny crybabies. You don't even have the brain cells to write your own system to solve your problem like I do. Kill yourself you subhuman filth.
>>
>>98886535
Name one original concept that has never been done in any way in the history of humanity without referencing any other genres, stories, or mechanics. Go on. I'm waiting.
>>
>>98886535
there is nothing wrong with being an imitator, but when you start saying shit like novelty doesn't exist, thats just flat out ego assuaging lie. Don't diminish other peoples talents just cause you ain't got none.

You have access to AI, you don't need half a million dollars for a development team. I've already used AI to generate a clone of the original NES Legend of Zelda with the same mechanics but a new world and dungeon map. You have literally no excuse.

>Nuclear Power

>Computer
Already exists, not new.

You didn't come up with either of those things. I'm telling you to make something brand new that has never been done before in human history right now. It cannot use existing things that already have been created, or else it is derivative.

>>98886573
>Tokens
Existing mechanic
>Bluetooth speaker
Not original

Sorry, you've made something derivative, not wholly original! You have to come up with something that uses no concepts that anyone has ever used before, or it is, ultimately, derivative. One might even say... novel.
>>
>>98886598
i come here to speak my mind.
what do you get out of it?

You've both been absolute boors by the way, I wouldn't feel the need to be this rude if you cunts hadn't come at me like a bunch of spite filled little shit goblins.
>>
>>98886213
I'd also like random characters to come back.
But more so it forces players to actually roleplay something that isn't their OC they thought about for 2 months.
Putting a bit of friction into character creation means the character can go places you didn't consider. You have to try to be in a different mindset instead of just "me with horns and can cast magic"
Honestly, I think it would be better for new players to do random characters the first few games they're in. It would get them out of the theatre kid mindset and more into fun roleplay.
>>
>>98886598
I find it helps make it easier to be patient when there's potential for good discussion instead of agitated and argumentative, as well as easier to disengage when its obvious there's nothing worth getting into.
Playing actual games gives you that to comment on, ask questions about and otherwise note how limited some posting can be.

You came here to whine like a little bitch faggot because you're too lazy and/or lacking in intelligence and/or creativity to just shut the fuck up, open your text editor of choice, and write your own TTRPG to play with the group of friends you don't have because you're an insufferable whiny little cunt.

I might as well own the damn place because unlike you insufferable whiny little shitstains I have friends who I regularly run/play systems I wrote with, and if I want a specific type of game I just make it with my own two hands. I don't need your slop machines, I don't need to use an existing genericslop system like GURPS or FATE or PBTA to base it on, I rawdog that shit and keep fixing it until it's balanced and what I find fun.

If you're going to come onto this board, post your shitty redditfrog, and then whine like a pussy, I'm going to call your ass out for it. Stop being a bitch and get shit done or fuck off.

for sure doesn't make this place more interesting to me so I try not to. There isn't really any killing the king with bantz so taking it too seriously like a thing that can be won seems doomed to fail.
>>
>>98886646
hey ASSHOLE, were you listening to a fucking WORD i said?

I don't WANT to make my own system. I want to experience OTHER peoples creativity, to enjoy THIER talent

It seems to me like the only reason your here is to tear down other peoples ideas and disrupt the thread with your off topic nonsense, you obviously aren't willing to engage with the subject and just wanted an excuse to argue and spread your toxicity to anyone who would tolerate it.
>>
>>98886674
>I get it. People here seem ready to take offence to things far too easily but giving everyone the initial benefit of the doubt and seeing if there's anything interesting is worth the extra 10 seconds

No it isn't. Bro, how long have you been here? How many people here are just out to waste your time or start shit or stir the pot? People have filters for a reason, its perfectly reasonable to screen for assholes before engaging with somebody, or to chew out people you know are there just to start shit.
>>
>>98886678
Honestly sounds like you don't really know what you want. Here's a hint: people who are most talented hide their talents and don't produce anything, at least not in public.
>>
>>98886653
Doesn't work here. There's no requirement for anyone to agree to anything and the ability to ignore evidence and shitpost is the default response. Knowing where to effort post and when to ignore someone who's a lost cause helps people not get stuck in a war of whoever has the most lead in their ass to just keep replying. And even then, all they win is page 10. No one cares about that.
Posting your argument and supporting evidence is good, other anons can see that and evaluate for themselves, but if you're not having frank dialogue with people or being light hearted fun, you're just venting about your feelings. That's okay too I suppose, lots of people need to do it, but its not winning anything.
>>
>>98886678
Then go literally anywhere else, because /tg/ has the collective talent of a braindead giraffe and I have nothing that you want.

I'm teaching you the lesson your deadbeat of a father wouldn't, if you want something you have to take it with your own two hands and not rely on others to do it for you.
>>
>>98886674
>There isn't really any killing the king with bantz so taking it too seriously like a thing that can be won seems doomed to fail.
thats true, but if your good enough you can still hurt peoples feelings, and that has its own kind of catharsis, to watch people being hoisted on their own petard, as it were.

Next time some asshole comes at you, lay into them, you'll see how good it feels. It might be counter productive but if you can get under their skin it has its own kind of satisfaction.

I suspect you've encountered someone here claiming to have done this to you in an argument at some point and you vehemently denying that is the case. Which necessarily means that's a very likely possibility whenever you think you have done so to someone else, you have made no impact at all and are just puffing yourself up because that's all the arguing gets to after a certain point here.
You can continue the cycle of suffering and shitting, that's your prerogative, but it is as always what we make of it.
>>
>>98886772
not to change the subject, but a lot of systems are starting to get a bit long in the tooth, aren't they? I mean fuck, 5th editions been out for what, like a decade? I don't have anything on my shelf from this decade other than the 5e and 5e revised core books, which are both bloody attrocious.

Most of the osr and nusr things I play have random character generation of one sort or another. The tables from Into the Odd style matching stats and HP to starting inventory are a fun idea and work well for fast and light games but I find lacking in creative problem solving gear that is fairly important to the gameplay style so I've had to augment them.
A lot of the time the designers miss the point of the randomization and don't really get how the tables work in use compared to the fad of random tables.
>>
>>98886795
I've played that Troika game that promises to be the new Planescape, it was incredibly bland and basic. I did not like it. I rolled on a table and ended up being some evil knight. Everyone else was weird.

Come back to AD&D 2e... come home, Anon.
>>
>>98886778
5e as the baseline has gone through the somewhat predictable cycle of 5.5e and might be aiming at a 6th edition in the near future. I'm perversely curious what that will look like and what play test documents get leaked but its not very likely to be a game I'll play.
There's endless churn of ttrpgs though, it almost feels like people are getting tired of Forged in the Dark, which I am all for god damn. It seems like there's an interest in travel and exploration sort of half story telling half dnd-in-sprit but I think more designers trying to mechanize and or create procedures for exploration that are satisfying but not overly burdensome. Its a challenging prospect. I don't particuliarly like Mythic Bastionland or The One Ring or Ryuutama but they're interesting attempts at it in different ways.
The space horror survival fad is likely over its boom phase, Mothership got a 2nsd edition, Death In Space didn't take off and the Aliens ttrpg sure does exist but hasn't come up as much recently. Horror in general might be dropping off a bit, goes in waves every decade or so.
>>
>>98886795
Yeah.. thing is I'm not super into fantasy settings, you know? I like sci-fi mostly. I know its really just a skin, but some elements of fantasy don't really jive with me, I feel like if a setting has rules regarding magic they should be consistant. Vanecian casting in osr doesn't have a whole lot to do with its origins, the formulae doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The schools of magic feel arbitrary, there isn't any real rhyme or reason to how their layed out or why magic works the way it does.

People treat spells like their programs, without any thematic understanding of how or why they work. All the poetry of magic is removed, you read soething like the Once and Future King or old farie tales and magic has a sort of rythym to it, everything in d&d is just rote understanding, going through motions with understanding the symetry and metaphore of magic; how it impacts the story, why it exists, what it does, how it operates, ect.

1st ed is starting to grow on me. I like the magic item rules, things like xp for magic items and gold for xp, random loot, random encounters, hex crawling, all sound cool, i just hate how much random crap you have to memorize and how arbitrary some of the rules are. Like there are just some rules you never want to look up, kinna like shadowrun scatter rules (especially if your playing without miniatures) because they don't work particularly well and it feels like jamming a square peg through a round hole.

Same, I did not enjoy the experience when I played it and found the modules hard to adapt to other nusr. It seems aimed at quirky character drama in ways I wouldn't use. Some of the art is a lot of fun but that's about as much as I got out of it.
What I haven't seen as much of and am not sure if it will turn into a design space is pregenerated characters. They've been useful to have for convention games or quick replacement but the entire area of ttrpgs where players actively take on the role of another character they didn't make isn't well explored even in the indie storygame scene. A lot of it is strongly focused on being able to tell your own story, so I don't think pregens will catch on but if people wanted to try and redo and successfully make compelling oWoD style story adventures with pregenerated characters and metaplot it would be fascinating to see.
Its the total opposite of the emergent interests that random character generation is aimed at but still a stepping away from personal stand-in control, more towards whatever school of acting came before everyone forgot there's more than just method acting and that becoming the storygame standard.

>I'm saying that RPGs have been figured out decades ago.
They really haven't. Every game system out there is shitty and full of holes.
>>
>>98886213
Is it such a big deal though? I like random character creation, but all of us had a cool character concept we wanted to see on the table from time to time. I don't think it's a real issue with established groups, and if you play with randos you can look for games that fit your taste better. Otherwise start hosting games and run them as you see fit. That said, try to sell the concept to your prospective players before calling them entitled asshole theater kids.

>>98886826
and you know, fantasy has other problems, its really hard to come up with new flavors when fantasy tropes are so embedded in our brains. Everything just kind of harkens back to historical wargaming and how boring that can be without shaking it up a bit. People like new costumes, new designs, new styles, painting everything historical grey just makes the setting come across as flat and sort of boring.
>>
>>98886213

Hopefully not.
>>
>>98886877
what i'm saying is like, sure, you can play with randomization, but you kind of have to go out of your way; its still not very popular.

I'm not saying we should just chuck point buy systems out the window, just that it might be a fun change of pace to sort of switch it up a little, that I'd like to see this trend take off and am interested in anything outside the osr or grog hammer scene, pretty much anything new that uses randomization during character creation.

I think there's room for the scifi to have a variance of how much of its a reskin and how much of its trying to have harder scifi concepts that are part of the game mechanics. I tend towards scifantasy pulp not worrying about it too much when playing with people because more often than not they're not keen on getting into the science side of things.
Running an osr game with vancian casting being actual super math formulas held in the head would be quite interesting to do. There was an old hack & slash piece on that I've been kicking around in the back of my head for a while.
Trying to make an encompassing magical system with cohesive operational rules seems like its always going to need at some point an arbitrary
>it just works this way
stopping point but that's not a thing that bothers me as much as some anons. Its a game, the system is just a model so expecting it to cover everything doesn't click with me.
There are games that do a more fantastical magic but they tend to rely more on creative storytelling and gm-player negotiation with guardrails than anything cohesive. I like the look of Royal Blood more than Mage, but have heared good things about Ars Magica. Haven't even read it though.
>>
>>98886889
though tbf, sci fi pretty much has the same problem, we have such a predefined notion of what the future is supposed to look like that we kind of forget that the actual future kind of looks nothing like that.

Delta Green still seems like its doing well or at least consistent when I think of it but its a bit of a different sort of horror. I'm way too autistic for horror games though and have just come to accept that I don't get it or am taking the horror part too literally and its not about being scared like horror movies are.
>>
>>98886313
You are such a dullard, OP.
>>
>>98886920
2nd ed Ars was great, later editions had some good art but it became a lot less story driven and a lot more crunchy, which kind of goes against the grain of the setting.

I ran a 5e Ars game for nearly a year, (maybe longer, wasn't really keeping track) i handed off my DM hat to someone else but desu they kind of sucked and playing became a chore.

I simultaneously love and hate the homework requirement for Ars, people on the Ars discord spent more time trying to automate record keeping than they did keeping records.

It was fun for a while but you really get a feeling for which players are slackers and how little record keeping they are willing to do in what amounts to essentially a story chronical, which is 90% record keeping.
>>
>>98886951
not OP, faggot.
>>
>>98886920
its not so much about the rules for magic being all encompasing, its about having a sort of rythym or poetry to them, you want something that is perhaps a bit elegant, something that just kind of flows naturally.

rote spellcasting is kind of boring, its not any different from a sci fi wizard pulling out his mcguffin. You don't really have to know HOW it works but its nice to know 'why' it works, you know?
>>
>>98886940
>>98886889
There's a largely missing piece of ttrpgs with genres compared to the fictional versions of it. A lot of sscif and fantasy was written in purposeful response to works the author had read before and building on, debating or contesting those ideas, providing a different perspective on it and otherwise making the reference and familiarity the starting point where it could become different. (Arguably that's happened with genre fiction at this point too)
This long form dialogue isn't really a thing people do when making ttrpgs. There's a bit of homage when people make a retroclone and there was a lot of 2000s-2010s getting away from dnd/trad style games but for the most part no one is starting from
>Slay the Spire had some interesting mechanics and story integration methods, how can I take those and change them into something else
There's the 'hack' concept but that seems more like homebrew rather than trying to present a different way to look at or play something.
>>
>>98886949
Yeah, spooky stories don't really lend themselves to role playing very well, i'll concede that theater kids do horror a lot better than grogs.
>>
>>98886912
You're the one bitching.
The OP is one big whine.
>>
>>98886970
>a story chronical, which is 90% record keeping.
I can see how that doesn't have as much broad appeal to players compared to people who more often run games. It is a bummer though.
There's an entire area of solo journaling games that I don't know much about except that one lich one Lichdome? Maybe Lichlight.
>>
>>98887028
and yet here you are.
fancy that.
>>
>>98887035
i don't really know that one.

I think I get what you mean. If you haven't seen it check out Blood Royal, its someone trying to make the artsy poetic magic as creative energy vibes from Mage and doing it in a dramatic storygame way. It is not well suited to my group at the moment so I have to hang onto it and wait.
In a much cooler world than I live in, people with classic poetry backgrounds would make and teach a game about tone and form and rhyme as mages casting spells but I'll have to make do with tarot cards and inspirational tables.
>>
>>98887054
It was Lichdome. Card prompt based journaling game. Solo games aren't a thing I do but it does seem to be another way to add in random generation that is different and potentially useful to take into multiplayer games.
>>
>>98887057
Mage is a fun system but the setting is an absolute mess; the traditions have nothing in common or any real reason to work together, they are as much in competition with one another as they are with the technocracy. Every traditions paradigm is exclusive with every other traditions paradigm, so its kind of dumb that they are all assumed to be working together. The garou tribes from white wolf have the same problem, they all have very little in common outside of a common enemy, they have no real reason to band together other than that and that really isn't enough.

Games like Eclipse Phase the factions are better balanced and integrated into the setting, but then it become about the players politics getting in the way of the game, people can't just be cool with each other and it really shows.

Its a shame cause EP would be a blast if people could act like adults and meet each other half way at the gaming table.

of course thats all assumming you didn't buy into the 2e proprietary trashheap.
>>
>>98887108

... it never went away in the first place, you dumb never-game froghsitter

>>
>>98886907
I see. I don't disagree with you, I also have fond memories of such characters, like the time I wanted to play a monk but rolled abysmal strength and agility, so the character became a wise old moral compass instead of the martial artist I envisioned, and it was a blast.
To your point, the newest game I have with random chargen is Imperium Maledictum, probably because it's essentially a 40k edition of WFRPG. The Modiphius 2d20 games also have it as an option, at least the Conan rpg did, and I half-remember an alternate rule for rolling stats in Symbaroum as well.
>>
>>98887109
The faction overdesign as straight jacket is a very white wolf problem. I don't think they intended it that way but by making so many and such detailed splatbooks it certainly inclined people to pick sides and see things as very set. Some of that was a metaplot problem as well. Only played VtM long ago and we all just accepted it was a game and we're the protagonists so our group is going to be abnormal compared to what all the other kindred are supposed to be. Its an interesting tension between wanting to make a filled in world but also needing to have creative exceptional space for storytelling and players I think WW really struggled with.

Eclipse Phase largely missed me, it was in a deign space I don't find very interesting personally and didn't seem aimed at the identity and being questions of transhumanism in gameplay, that looked more like background compared to the politics and figuring out how to have superpowers but I only browsed the generals here a bit and didn't engage.

But I think you're onto something with building the game to have as part of the design and world the need for player character variety. The tricky part of attaching ideological ties is people taking it too seriously for sure.
>>
>>98887119
Journaling games are their own sort of area of solo games, there's overlap but some solo games are more about random tables or mechanics to put ontop of existing games.
I've only played a few and didn't find it as interesting but look at them sometimes to see if there's parts I can lift or if it can be played with two players coop. They have a lot of question prompts and different basic mechanics to lead to the next series of questions. Lichdome uses a deck of cards, sort of like a chose your own adventure or analog ai but its not really reacting, more like writing prompts.
>>
>>98887198

>>98887213
They come up with tings I like to take for other purposes but the solo part of it is not very appealing to me either. Probably one of the spaces to check out if new takes on random character creation is an interest.
>>
Seth Skorkowsky has explained it. Live plays have ruined RPGs because new players are expected to act and not role play. The (voice) actors have redefined gaming, it's all about story arcs and acting like you're in front of cameras all the time.
>>
>>98887373
Go woke, go broke.
>>
>>98886213

>>
>>98886213
No, games evolved away from that because getting fucked by bad luck before play even begins is ass.
>>
>>98893352
Maybe 1/10 tables is playing a game difficult enough for random generation to matter. Especially when everyone at the table randomly generates so everyone is just as fucked.
Every excuse is just a cover for "I want to play my super speshul OC".
>>
>>98886251

>>
>>98886213
>I'm tired of entitled players wanting to control everything
Fuck off. If I'm devoting my time to a game, I'm going to run what I want to run. Neither you or the dice get to tell me differently. Is that entitled? Fuck yes it is, and rightly so. You don't get to tell me what I can do or how I can have fun. Kys.
>>
>>98886213
why is hating your own players such a common thread?
>>
>>98893838
Because a whole lot of players deserve a whole lot of hate.

Especially players who think that they deserve to always get what they want and the rest of the group and the GM are required to let them have it.
>>
>>98893841
>i hate everyone else at my table and yet i still show uo
>>

Nobody as my table currently does that.

Some have in the past. Fuck those people. You aren't entitled to anything when you sit down, except the opportunity - not even the guarantee - to have fun.
>>
>>98893838
I don't hate my players, i just want them to experience something different. Hell if I hated my players I wouldn't be trying to share this with them.
>>
>>98886213
I want you to experience a TPK for the first time. I want you to experience your character dying. I want you to see that its no big deal, that its just a game, and that the danger and tension add an element of suspense to the game. I want you to see what its like to roll up a character in 5 minutes instead of 5 hours, i want you to feel what its like when you get an unlucky roll, when you've been whiffing it for hour and you finally score a critcal hit, what its like when you roll a freaking mega chad and everybody around you is jealous, only to have him die in the first five minutes.

Your missing out on all these opportunities to make the game more exciting. Who even cares if you win or lose?

>>98893939
I play games to have fun. Losing isn't fun. Either give me a fun game or I walk.

I think it's the result of worsening living conditions in the dying American empire. Everyone's afraid of being laid off, getting assraped buying basic goods and fuel, made to feel guilty about relaxing instead of grinding at a side-gig, etc. People want pure escapism. The appeal of an 80's style mudcore DnD game where you start with nothing or an angsty 90's style World of Darkness game just isn't there anymore.

Meanwhile, other forms of entertainment do let you just have everything entirely on your own terms. People will stream an entire season of TV in a single weekend. Maybe it was healthier and more social when I had to watch a week for the next episode of Battlestar Galactica and watch random movies my friends bought over, but it would be hard to go back at this point.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's good to leave your comfort zone, try CoC when you're rather play DnD or play a fighter when you're usually the arcane caster. It just doesn't seem the time to crack down and tell people they're being entitled. You're lucky these days to have 4-5 friends with the attention span and free time to do a TTRPG campaign in your city*.

*Yeah, you can play online but it's just not the same as hearing the dice rattle across the table and sharing snacks with your bros. It's like when break a dry spell with that one overweight friend of a friend. Basically fapping into another person. It didn't count as sex and your subconscious knew it.

My group randomly generates characters and it's quite fun. I advertised online and found a normal, well adjusted, fully employed group that show up to my apartment on time, read the rulebook and just have a good time. None of us are over thirty and we don't live in a big city. Their randomly rolled characters are unique and charismatic. Have you considered finding a group you enjoy playing with?
