My DM has been really weird lately and implementing a lot of new rules. He mentioned joining a new Discord with a bunch of millennial unc DMs who got him all fired up about how great 3rd edition was. His biggest change was disallowing long rests outside of a totally safe place like a town or castle. Not to put too fine a point on it, but I want to discourage this idea and get back to the official rules. I just want to go into each encounter and be able to use my abilities to their fullest. So far I've been insisting on returning to town after fights. Malicious compliance and all. But I feel like I've been losing this power struggle. The DM had an NPC group of adventurers loot a dungeon while we were gone. Now the other party members are mad at me since the DM hinted the dungeon held a magic item the wizard really wanted. I had this idea to get everyone in the party helms of teleportation to get home instantly but he said that he doesn't believe magic items should be something you can just buy in a shop in his world(also influence from the DM discord presumably). Anyone have any other ideas I can try?

Your DM is right and you’ll probably realize it if you can relax your anus for a few sessions. What are you playing, did you make a sensible martial with a smattering of encounter powers to succeed in this new environment, or did you make a caster so you can nag everyone about resting?

Wilderness adventuring got absolutely ruined by faggot 5e where you are reincarnated every morning in a fresh body and can eat good berries and sleep in a magical hut made of pure force that is impenetrable. NuD&D takes ALL the fun out of wilderness travel. The only good way to do 5e is for a long rest to take an entire week and run a west marches campaign with troupe play.
