Shut the fuck up faggot. Really fucking tired of you low-info normalfaggots who starting browsing this board because of Neckbeardia or some other shitty YouTube parasites, coming in here and dropping the most low-IQ regurgitated takes imaginable. A ranger is not a "Druid But Worse" you mongoloid, it's a fighter with survival and tracking abilities. He's part rogue, part fighter, part wilderness-survival expert. "uhhh bb-b-b-but rangers in D&D aren't based on Aragorn, because le heckin nu-male game developers for 5e, and hecking Matt Mercer said so!!" Shut up retard. You think that the ranger in D&D was inspired by the fucking U.S. National Park service? The fucking Texas rangers? No, it was inspired by Aragorn from Lord of the Rings you stupid fucking faggot piece of shit. By the way, no, "ranger" does not mean he does ranged attacks, you actual literal simpleton. What a mongoloidal ESL take. You think US Park Rangers are named after archery? Idiot, it's because they "range" over a vast stretch of territory. That's the historical meaning you fucking imbecile. Genuinely you people who don't know SHIT about D&D, or TTRPGs in general, who come in here and act like you're oh-so-clever repeating dogshit takes from homosexual influencers (like faggot-ass Matt Mercer who paints his fingernails black and cries about his uncle dying of AIDS, while fucking a girl with the body of a goddamn tranny) and thinks that that means he knows any of what he's talking about. Shut the fuck up.

I really wish Rangers felt better to play as. I get that they're supposed to be good at tracking and surviving and stuff, and the concept of a ranger is awesome, but it just feels like they are outclassed by every other class, unfortunately.
I think they need to give the class something to make him shine a bit more. Maybe more talents, maybe the DM needs to put a heavier emphasis on the characters managing the logistics and survival when traveling in the wild, etc.

But they definitely need to fix the fucking hunter's mark thing. It's the only spell the ranger will ever concentrate on for the rest of his life. He needs more than just that.

    >ranger
    >sword
Makes zero sense. A long knife or short sword MAYBE but a small axe/big dagger combo would be infinitely better.
    >>
    >>98899938
Counterpoint: swords were reliable sidearms for archers (and other missile troops) throughout history and for different cultures. Easy to carry while having both hands on your bow while still being formidable weapons (especially if you don't expect to fight in formations). Some extra daggers or knives are easy to carry next to the swords as well. Problematic are other two-handed weapons while you are already carrying a bow, like spears.
Apparently, some chinese crossbow troops used two-handed swords as sidearm, and burgundian archers were using two-handed sword or bastard swords as well
The real reason is, though: rangers are martial weapons and thus can use swords. And Aragorn used swords.

    finally some interesting bow design
    >>98899981
Counter-counterpoint: Rangers are not troops, but auxiliary units.
    >>
A professional adventurer would be the exact sort of person to pick the same weapons as a soldier, AKA a sword, because swords are very good both on their own and as something to rely on once you are out of arrows or if the enemy gets in range or if you need to get in range or... If we're talking realism, anyways. I've seem some okay axe-rangers based on vibes.
    >>
    >>98899996
    >Rangers are not troops, but auxiliary units
That doesn't really change what I said. Regardless of their role, there is only so much you can carry on yourself. Especially if you want to be mobile and don't have a baggage train with you.
If we look at them as a military unit, then they tend to be lightly armored, fighting outside of formations, making use of the terrain, using bows (or other ranged weapons). That means they are limited in what melee weapons they can carry. And a sword, for one-handed or two-handed use, would be a really good sidearm for them.
Same goes for adventurer rangers, although rarely does a system care about what weapons you carry safe for weight limits.
    All things considered:
    >>98900041
Axe-rangers are cool and also should happen more often.

You have very broad definition of ranger. What you mention there for me are (taking for example D&D 3.5e) dedicated skirmishing units like Scouts, Ranged Fighters, Rogues and some prestige classes like Wild Plains Outrider and even Highland Stalker. I see rangers as very specialized forward trail seekers. They are not meant for combat but rather pathfinding, tracking, trapping, survival and gathering duties. Sadly, many GMs either ignore these or allow magicshit to replace all of the survival stuff so rangers end up as X_but_worse
    >>
There's a very intriguing suggestion on 1d6chan on the ranger page that the class should be revamped to eject the lousy nature theming and make them into the generalist class that can do a bit of everything. Particularly since that's how systems like 5e end up treating them; they end up being fighters/druids/rogues but worse. Instead of struggling against that by trying give them a special identity that distinguishes them, the system maker should embrace it and make them competent generalists. Buff their damage to like 75% of a fighter's rather than the 50% it is now, give them a less nature-obsessed spell list, let them spec into more "urban" skills, and you have a pretty solid jack of all trades class.
Reasoning being that the word "ranger" is really quite adjacent to "adventurer", and characters like Aragorn and Geralt are only "nature affiliated" insofar as they are self-sufficient loners who hang out in the wilderness and hunt dangerous monsters. I'm pretty fond of the idea.
    >>
    >>98905734
Aragorn didn't just hang out in the wilderness, he traveled extensively, for decades, in order to learn about the lands and to traverse it from any corner to the other. He was called strider for a reason.
The wilderness tour guide aspect should factor in for the ranger. The problem is systems and GMs omitting the difficult parts of traveling. The magic aspect of the D&D ranger is the retarded part that can go away.
"Monster hunter" can be whatever, can be a fighter, a ranger, barbarian.
